Thanks to Joel and an anonymous listener for their suggestions this week! Further reading: Dieback and recovery in poplar and attack by hornet clearwing moth The enormous and beautiful Atlas moth: A male hairy tentacle moth without and with coremata extended [photos from this site]: The hornet moth looks like a hornet but can't sting: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. Welcome to September, where we're mere weeks away from Monster Month! Invertebrate August is over for another year, but what's this? An episode about moths?! Hurrah for one extra invertebrate episode, because they don't get enough attention on this podcast! Thanks to Joel and an anonymous listener for their suggestions. First, a listener who wants to remain anonymous suggested that we talk about moths in general, and the Atlas moth in particular. I like the Atlas moth because you can catch it in Animal Crossing. It's also beautiful and one of the largest moths in the entire world. Its wingspan can be well over 10 inches across, or about 27 cm, which is bigger than a lot of bird wingspans. The Atlas moth's wings are mostly cinnamon brown with darker and lighter spots. The upper wings have a curved sort of hook at the top that's lighter in color and has an eyespot. It looks remarkably like a snake head, and in fact if a predator approaches, the moth will move its wings so that it looks like a snake is rearing its head back to strike. Despite having such huge wings, atlas moths don't fly very well. That's okay because they only need to be able to fly for a few days, which they mostly do at night. They're only looking for a mate, not food, because they don't even have fully formed mouthparts. They don't eat as adults. Like many moths, they mate, lay eggs, and die. A few weeks later, the eggs hatch and the baby caterpillars emerge. The caterpillar is pale green with little spikes all over, and it eats plants until it grows to around 4 and a half inches long, or about 11 and a half cm. At that point it spins a cocoon attached to a twig, hidden from potential predators by dead leaves that the caterpillar incorporates into the cocoon's outside. The Atlas moth lives in forests in southern Asia, including China, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, with a subspecies native to Japan. Its cocoons are sometimes collected to use for silk. The silk isn't as high a quality as the domesticated silk moth's, but it's very strong and since the cocoons are so big, they produce lots of silk. Sometimes people will collect a cocoon after the moth has emerged and use it as a little purse. Next, Joel suggested two interesting moths. The first is often called the hairy tentacle moth, which sounds absolutely horrifying. Its scientific name is Creatonotos gangis, and it lives in parts of Australia and southeast Asia. The hairy tentacle moth is also called the Australian horror moth and other names that inspire fear and disgust. But why? The moth is really pretty. Its wings are pale brown and white with dark gray stripes in the middle, and it has a black spot on its head. The abdomen is usually red with black spots in a row. The wingspan is about 40 mm. The issue comes with the way the male attracts a female. Inside his abdomen the male has four coremata, which are glands that emit pheromones. Pheromones are chemicals that other moths can detect, much like smells. When a male is ready to advertise for a mate, he perches on the edge of a leaf or somewhere similar and inflates the coremata so that they unfurl from inside the abdomen, like blowing up a balloon. Sometimes he only extends two of the coremata, sometimes all of them. Either way, the coremata are surprisingly large, sometimes longer than the entire abdomen. They're dark gray with feathery hairs and they do actually look like hairy tentacles. They're sometimes called hair pencils, but the term coremata is actually Greek for feath...

Thanks to Max for suggesting one of our slightly spooky amphibians this week! Further reading: New crocodile newt discovered in Vietnam Further watching: Brave Wilderness Giant Screaming Frog! The new Halloween-y crocodile newt discovered in Vietnam [photo by Phung My Trung and taken from the article linked above]: A smoky jungle frog: A screenshot from the video linked above: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. It's the end of September and you know what that means: we're about to start Monster Month! This year I have so many awesome ideas for episodes that we're starting monster month early, with a non-spooky episode about two sort of spooky-looking amphibians. Thanks to Max for suggesting one of the animals we're about to talk about! Instead of rating the monster month episodes on a spookiness scale from one to five ghosts, this year we're rating them on a spookiness scale of one to five bats, which seems more appropriate. This episode is only one bat, meaning even our younger listeners shouldn't find it scary. But first, a quick correction. Thanks very much to Mary for catching a mistake I made in last week's rhinoceros episode. I said that black rhinos can weigh 18 kilograms, when I should have said 1800 kilograms. 18 kg is about 40 pounds, so I think you can agree that I made a BIG mistake. Now, on to the “spooky” amphibians. Lots of amphibians live in southeast Asia, many of them never seen by scientists. In 2018, a team of scientists were studying crocodile newts in Vietnam when they discovered one that didn't look like any of the many other crocodile newts that live in Asia. Since there are over 30 species known, with new ones being discovered all the time, including seven others from Vietnam alone, they suspected this might be a species new to science. The new newt lives in high elevations in the central highlands in Vietnam, much farther south and in much higher elevations than the other known crocodile newt species. After the initial finding in 2018, the lead scientist, an amphibian and reptile expert named Phung My Trung (apologies because I probably pronounced his name wrong) spent four years searching for more specimens and learning about them before he described it as a new species. One thing I love is that he was quoted as saying that the adult newts “were so beautiful that I was shaking and could hardly believe I was holding a live specimen in my hand.” And it is absolutely a gorgeous animal. It's black with orangey-red markings on its back, lovely Halloween colors, and in fact the markings sort of look like the skull, backbone, and ribs of a cartoon skeleton. Females are bigger than males, and a big female can grow as much as 3 inches long, or 7.5 cm, from snout to vent, not counting its tail that's almost as long as its body. That's pretty much all we know so far about this newt. Because it appears to have such a restricted range, it's most likely endangered due to habitat loss and climate change, but now that we know it's there, scientists and conservationists can work to keep it and its habitat safe. Our other amphibian this week is one suggested by Max. Max, by the way, is an incredible artist who specializes in making reptiles and amphibians out of clay. Max asked specifically about the giant screaming frog, which definitely sounds like a Halloween-themed animal. The giant screaming frog isn't the actual name of the frog, or at least I couldn't find a frog with that specific name. I think it's from an awesome video posted in 2017. I'll put a link in the show notes if you want to watch the video, which is a YouTube channel called Brave Wilderness. In the video, a man called Coyote Peterson catches a giant frog called the Smoky Jungle Frog. When he does, the frog makes this sound: [screaming frog!] That doesn't actually sound all that spooky. But it is a warning call so I bet other smoky jungle frogs think it's terr...

Monster Month(s) marches on when "Bad Moon on the Rise" hits Ronnie and Jazz like a hooked fish. But yes, this one is about a werewolf, and yes, this includes scenes in which the cast discuss werewolves. It may sound fun and whimsical, but it's not. It's stupid. It's stupid like the rest of the series is stupid. And what's with the unsub's Punisher origin story? Last we checked, Frank Castle's reaction wasn't to do molly and create werewolf dentures. You think they asked Creedence if they could get the rights to that? Nah. They didn't even try picking up the phone. They knew. They KNEW the answer.

There's an early-bird special that will only be available on the first day of the campaign, just saying. But right now, let's kickstart monster month with an episode about the wampus cat! The wampus cat, or just wampus, has appeared in folklore throughout North America for over a hundred years and probably much longer, especially in mountainous areas in the eastern portion of the continent. The term actually comes from the word catawampus, probably related to the phrase catty corner. Both words mean “something that's askew or turned diagonally,” but catawampus was also once used in the southeastern United States to describe any strange creature lurking in the forest. It was a short step from catawampus to wampus cat, possibly also influenced by the word catamount, used for the cougar and other large cats native to North America. Whatever the origins of the word, the wampus cat was usually considered to be a real animal. Some people probably used the term as a synonym for catamount, but many people firmly believed the wampus was a different animal from the cougar, bobcat, or lynx. It was usually supposed to be a type of big cat, although not necessarily. The word wampus also once referred to a dress-like garment resembling a knee-length smock worn over leggings, also called a wampus coat. The first newspaper use of wampus referring to an animal doesn't appear until the very end of the 19th century. A Missouri paper wrote in May 1899: They knew immediately the source of the hair-raising scream. The “wampus” was after them. They could see it; it was a big black thing with long hair and large feet. What may be a follow-up to that story, from a different Missouri newspaper, appeared in November 1899 and was headlined “THE WAMPUS IS DEAD.” Many described it as gray wolf, but others refused to believe such an animal was here and lightly spoke of the wampus. It frequented the dark woods at day time, coming forth at night and roaming around,

I know, it hasn't even started yet and I'm already shouting all about it, but I'm excited! There's a link in the show notes if you want to click through and bookmark that page. Also, I have a correction from our recent squirrel episode. Nicholas wrote to let me know that vitiligo isn't actually a genetic condition, although some people are genetically slightly more likely to develop it. I think that's what caused my confusion. Vitiligo can be caused by a number of things, but it's still true that you can't catch it from someone. I'll include a more in-depth correction in next year's updates episode. Okay, let's start this episode off with Connor's suggestion. Connor told me about a newly discovered bat called Myotis nimbaensis, and it's not just any old bat. It's a Halloween bat! Its body is orange and its wing membranes are black. It's called the orange-furred bat and it lives in the Nimba Mountains of Guinea in West Africa. The orange-furred bat was only discovered in 2018, when a team of scientists was exploring abandoned mine shafts in the mountains, looking for the critically endangered Lamotte's roundleaf bat. The team was surveying the bats in cooperation with a mining company and conservation groups, because they needed to know where the bats were so the old mine shafts could be repaired before they fell in and squished all the bats. Then one of the team saw a bat no one recognized. It was orange and fluffy with big ears and tiny black dot eyes, and its wings were black. The team described the bat in 2021. Next, let's talk about a rat. It was also discovered recently, in this case in 2013 and described in 2015. It's usually called the hog-nosed rat. The hog-nosed rat is a rodent but it's not actually that closely related to other rats and mice. It's even been assigned to its own genus. It's a soft brown-gray on its back and white underneath, with big ears, a very long tail, and a pink nose that does actually look a lot like a little piggy nose. Its eyes are small but its incisors are extremely long and sharp. In fact, they look like vampire fangs! In 2013, a team of scientists was studying rodents living in the area. To do this they would put special traps out at night and check them in the morning. This isn't a regular rat trap that kills rats, of course, but a box that keeps the rodent safe inside so it can be examined before being released again. One day they checked a trap and inside was a rodent no one recogn...

In perhaps the least spooky (but still bone-chilling) episode of Monster Month, Bob and Chris are talking magic! Bob reads "Song" by Brigit Pegeen Kelly, Chris reads “White Godiva Melts In a Mouthful of Blood: Prayer For My Unborn Daughter” by Alysia Nicole Harris, and then the dudes talk Hot Sauce and how weird it'd be to give Grant Hill a nickname.
In this episode, Adam and Devin round out this Monster Month with a history of the WOLFMAN (or Werewolves generally) Check out our Patreon at www.patreon.com/greatscreampod !
Welcome to ISWUTT Monster Month episode #2: Vampires! This episode is sure to get your blood flowing. This week I get into one of the most brutal rulers in history, who helped spawn some of the most notable vampire tales! I also get into the most famous piece of vampire literature.
