In another chilling short episode of our ‘Haunted Northumberland' from The Voices from the North East Podcast, we introduce you to the haunting tale of the Blue Boy at Chillingham Castle. Join Paul and Justine as they share some of the tragic history behind this spectral figure.
Welcome to IFLScience's first-ever Halloween podcast special, bringing you a feature-length episode of The Big Questions as we take on the UK's most haunted castle. We journeyed to Northumberland up by the Anglo-Scottish border to spend the night in Chillingham Castle, a place that allegedly boasts an above-average number of ghosts. We wanted to explore what attracts people to sites such as this one, even inspiring folks to gear up with a host of ghost-hunting tools and try and communicate with spirits, despite the fact we've yet to find any evidence for their existence. At IFLScience, we don't do things by halves, so we threw it all at the wall: Ouija boards, dungeon immersion, dowsing rods, spirit boxes, and just a bit of old-fashioned wandering around in the dark. We also spoke to Emeritus Professor Chris French, an expert in anomalistic psychology, and the founders of the Recreational Fear Lab to top up on the science of fear and better understand why it is the paranormal has us all in such a choke hold. So, join IFLScience's Chris Carpineti, Dr Beccy Corkill, Rachael Funnell, and Dr Russ Moul as they journey into the unknown in this very special episode of The Big Questions.

We have stories about Chillingham Castle in England, Leap Castle in Ireland, Prejama Castle in Slovakia, and Himeji Castle in Japan! These are some spine tingling tales we are so excited to tell you all about.
Welcome to our Chillingahm Castle speshy! We drove for hours with our editor Mike and of course the OG GH Barney - only to get haunted by LOTS of different ghosts in this wild Northumberland castle. Touted as the most haunted castle in the UK, we should have expected some paranormal activity... but the reality was far more terrifying than we could have imagined. We experienced swinging cupboard doors in The Tower... scratches on the neck... musical boxes chiming... and all guided by the wonderful Richard who tells us his tales of the many ghost hunts and activity he's seen in all his years at Chillingham! A trip that will never be forgotten by the Ghost Huns, we hope you enjoy hearing of the Castle's spooky secrets. I polled my Instagram audience to choose the topic for this episode and the choices were either energy, or my trip to Chillingham Castle. Obviously, Chillingham Castle won! I decided to begin with the audio from a TikTok by @historyhit that gives some historical context before I share my experience. I spent years as a documenter for a paranormal investigators group in Vancouver, so visiting the castle was on my bucket list! In addition to the eerie encounters, I also talked about my evolving beliefs around ghosts and earthbound spirits. As I've said on the podcast before, it's important to remain flexible in our beliefs so that we can meet new experiences with curiosity. Grasping firmly to beliefs can also invalidate the lived experiences of others, and I think there is divinity in having differing perspectives. I would love to hear your experiences with haunted places over in the free Spirit School community! @historyhit TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@historyhit Spirit School Links The Initiation Summer 2023 Waitlist: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/63d3191cde520bd60dc33d63 The Initiation 2.0 Summer 2023 Waitlist: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/641a55f4dc3789176b6944ea Spirit School Collective: https://www.squamishmedium.com/spiritschoolcollective Join us on the FREE Spirit School platform: https://myspiritschoolcollective.com/plans/ Trauma Informed Lightworker Waitlist: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/6398f03888aca7e15696b1fa Visit Spirit School at https://www.squamishmedium.com/ for all courses and upcoming programs View full transcripts of podcast episodes at https://www.squamishmedium.com/blog History of Chillingham Castle (@historyhit): Chillingham Castle was a monastery in the 12th Century Edward the first, the hammer of the Scots, led his Scottish campaigns from this location The first recorded accounts of the ghosts were penned by Lady Leonora Tankerville There was an increase in occult spiritualism during Edwardian and Victorian times Sir Arthur Conan Doyle commended Lady Tankerville on her reports of the Chillingham ghosts The current owner is from the original Gray family owners and has overseen renovations Guests still report seeing flashes of blue similar to ghosts sightings of the past A priest who traveled to get rid of ghosts said there were too many there My Experience of Chillingham Castle: I went when I was 19 years old in 2002, right out of high school and obsessed with Most Haunted Putting this show together was fun because it brought up so much nostalgia Paranormal things and ghosts tend to be our entry into the spiritual space At that time, I was immersed in books and TV shows with Sylvia Brown and John Edwards I joined a paranormal investigation group when the first Most Haunted episode came out I was so excited at that time and didn't know that I was a medium yet I validated what the mediums got and went through photos and audio recordings of our outings I caught some EVPs from those recordings and overnight ones from my bedside My ex husband was from England and we traveled once a year We stayed in the tower at Chillingham Castle in the off season and I was so excited My memories of this time are piecemeal because it was not a healthy relationship Scotland has my heart and I still want to visit there again I couldn't believe how much I missed the mountains when traveling My ex-husband and I were the only people there other than the caretaker We stayed in the tower, which was used for Scottish prisoners of war I was in awe of how much history was there compared to somewhere like Vancouver Going to the bathroom in the middle of the night was terrifying in the castle The strangest thing that happened was not being able to see the castle on the only road The keeper gave us a midnight tour of the torture chamber that scared me One paranormal thing that happened was light coming in and a loud popping noise that woke me I have heard a voice yelling my name in my ear a couple of times A friend's mom came to me and I saw the Almost Famous poster and her name was Penny My friend wasn't initially receptive and that is part of why I don't do drive-by readings I am still unsure of my belief in earthbound spirits or if they have passed on and choose to visit Part of the reason I am undecided is that some teachers I respect believe in them We never caught anything definitive in my paranormal investigation years Beautiful music or framing it as an angel experience could change your perspective Our beliefs are our choices and we have free will The more spiritually aware we become, the more we realize we don't know Because of Mavis' beliefs, I firmly believed earthbound spirits didn't exist a couple years ago I think there are reasons for mysteries, including the opportunity to expand our beliefs Some Spirit School Collective members share their experiences with haunted places Being stuck on specific beliefs limits our potential for spiritual growth and expansion I saw a full apparition of a little boy by my husband's side of the bed when I was pregnant I lost that pregnancy and learned through a medium that it was my child that I saw Before my trauma informed training I would negate people's lived experiences I like to straddle both sides of the conversation without imposing my beliefs Each of us having our own truth does not make it the capital T truth I believe there is a divine reason for us to be divided in spiritual beliefs

Krys leads off with the tale of Versailles and it's royal history. This palace is one of the most extravagant palaces on the face of the planet. Throughout the upheaval of the French Revolution this was a physical example of the divide between haves and have nots. Time slips, ghosts, and perhaps even the Queen herself visits from beyond the brave. Some of the furniture still there is some of the originals as well. You want ghosts? Tori picked another haunted castle, this time in the UK, Chillingham Castle. This 12th century monastery turned castle is one of the most haunted castles in the world. Being on the border between Scotland and England, this castle has actually seen battle. Add in some torture, executions, and other violent death, the sheer amount of ghosts is impressive. The castle is now an inn, would you want to to stay there with some of the previous denizens? In 1867, a psychiatric hospital was opened in Victoria, Australia, and for the next 126 years it would carry out horrendous medical procedures, without consent, or anesthetic. 13,000 died at Aradale, and today there are countless reports of visitors being bitten and scratched by unseen assailants, and disembodied screams and cries are heard along the empty corridors. In honor of the spooky season, today I decided to examine the haunted castle, and on in particular: Chillingham Castle, the most haunted castle in England (so sayeth the current owners). What do we know about Chillingham's history as a border fortress between the warring nations of England and Scotland, and just how dark and bloody does that history get? I'll say it now – pretty damn dark and pretty damn bloody. Who are the various ghosts people have claimed to see at Chillingham, whether it's in a bedroom, the chapel, or out in the courtyard, and how dangerous might those ghosts be? In what ways does Chillingham truly epitomize everything we love to be scared of in a haunted castle? I will be answering these questions, mentioning a few notable haunted castle horror films of note, and have a sweet little bedtime story for you about a fancy married couple who have an old torture chamber in their basement, and not the sexy kind. Why ponder the haunting of a medieval castle when I for one don't believe in ghosts? Because the legend and history of Chillingham, complete with a sadistic master torturer and a lake full of bones, is very Creeptastic! See visuals for this episode on Instagram! This week we travel across the pond once again to visit a haunted castle. Located in northern England in the area of Northumberland near the border of Scotland sits a castle with a history that goes back to the 1200's. Wars, torture and murder plagued the castle's history and paved the way for restless souls to walk the earth for eternity. Hailed as the most haunted castle in England, Chillingham definitely delivers! To see photos we discussed in this episode, please follow us on our Social Media platforms:Lurk on FacebookLurk on TwitterLurk on InstagramWe have a new Facebook Group join in the discussion! Dating back almost 2000 years, the Colosseum stands today as one of the new "Seven Wonders", and is one of the most recognisable, and most visited, landmarks on earth. For five centuries men, women, and animals were brutally killed in front of a crowd of up to 80,000 in gladiator battles, animal hunts, and executions. Around 400,000 humans and over a million animals were slain here, all for the entertainment of the people of Rome. Its undeniable that this much bloodshed has forever left its mark on the Colosseum, which is today considered the most haunted building in Rome, if not all of Italy. Together let's look at the history and hauntings, and find out if it deserving of it's reputation of being a hive of paranormal activity? One of the best-known landmarks in England, The Tower of London is famed for the Crown Jewels, the Beefeaters, and the Ravens that have stood guard for centuries. In our last episode, before our Season one finale at episode 10, we delve into the history and ghost stories that make Chillingham Castle a prime candidate for the most haunted location in the UK. So much history has been played out in this building and it's surrounding grounds. So many famous people have lived and died here, but there are undertones of a much darker existence, with the likes of John Sage imprinting his terrifying presence here hundreds of years ago. Described by many witnesses, as well as the current owners, as the most haunted castle in the United Kingdom, Chillingham Castle has a formidable reputation as a sight where a huge amount of paranormal events have occurred. Many television shows have been filmed there including Most Haunted, Scariest Places On Earth and Ghost Hunters International, with all of these programmes displaying highly impressive results. If you've had experience or sighting at Chillingham Castle or, for that matter, anywhere in the world, then please email the show at hauntedukpodcast@hotmail.com with full details of your encounter and I will try my best to read out as many listener stories as possible in dedicated listener episodes. I would genuinely love to to hear from you, so please, get in touch. Last of all, if you have a Podcast that you need mixing, or if you need original music writing for your podcast, then please get in touch via email to pinkflamingo.musicproductions@hotmail.com. This week Sandra talks about Chillingham Castle which dates back to the 12th century. Located in Northumberland England, Chillingham Castle is known as the most haunted castle in the UK. The castle has a history of bloody battles. Three in five people who visit the castle report seeing ghosts. From the ghost of a blue boy to being the inspiration for books and has been investigated by Ghost Hunters International. Then, Danielle covers the Great Molasses Flood of 1919. Also known as the Boston Molasses Disaster, occurred on January 15, 1919, in the North End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. A large storage tank filled with molasses burst and caused a tidal wave in the city's prominent and bustling area. Children, women, men, and horses were caught in the sticky mess. The event entered local folklore and residents claimed for decades afterward that the area still smelled of molasses on hot summer days. Tonight, we head to Alnwick, England. At Alnwick Castle you can visit the Poisonous Gardens planted by Jane Percy. Or the multi-tree house that is a restaurant or get lost in the bamboo labyrinth. And after a lovely day, you can attempt to get some sleep at the exceptionally haunted Chillingham Castle. And "chilling" is just the beginning. This castle was the site where the ruthless bastard John Sage slaughtered thousands of Scottish prisoners of war. The man even axed children to death here! In short, this place is soaked in blood!
The witching season is upon us once again. Past Halloweens we’ve covered a Medieval Serial Killer, Medieval Zombies and more. All the Halloween episodes are available on the Halloween Podcast page. This Halloween we are looking at haunted castles from the Middle Ages. Castles We’ll visit a handful of castles around England and one in Ireland. Most of the castles today are in Northern England and one isn’t a castle. We’ll start out at Whitby Abbey and make our way north to Alnwick Castle and the infamous Alnwick Vampire! The Alnwick Vampire spread death and pestilence wherever it roamed. It was even recorded by medieval chronicler William of Newburgh. Then we’ll look at a castle dubbed ‘The Most Haunted Castle” in England, Chillingham Castle. Filled with the ghosts of hundreds of Scottish prisoners, an evil torturer and an innocent boy caught in the middle of political betrayal. The last two stops on our trip are on the Emerald Isle at Malahide Castle talking about perhaps, the first evil clown and ending up in London at the massive Tower of London! The Tower of London is home to some of the most famous ghosts in England including the Princes in the Tower and Queen Anne Boleyn. The night before her execution, Queen Anne wrote her death poem, which you can read below. I found a beautiful rendition of the poem set to music in the episode. Queen Anne Boleyn Death Poem: Oh Death, rock me asleep, Bring me to quiet rest, Let pass my weary guiltless ghost Out of my careful breast. Toll on, thou passing bell; Ring out my doleful knell; Let thy sound my death tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. My pains who can express? Alas, they are so strong; My dolour will not suffer strength My life for to prolong. Toll on, thou passing bell; Ring out my doleful knell; Let thy sound my death tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. Alone in prison strong I wait my destiny. Woe worth this cruel hap that I Should taste this misery! Toll on, thou passing bell; Ring out my doleful knell; Let thy sound my death tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. Farewell, my pleasures past, Welcome, my present pain! I feel my torments so increase That life cannot remain. Cease now, thou passing bell; Rung is my doleful knell; For the sound my death doth tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. The Tower of London also had one of the craziest executions recorded. A novice executioner missed his mark and chased an elder lady around hacking her to death. As comical as it sounds it as a gruesome death seen by over 150 witnesses. Grab some candy and get ready for a chilling tour of haunted castles! Alasdair wows James with England's self-proclaimed "most haunted castle." That description is technically accurate, in that it is a castle that's been on the TV show "Most Haunted". Alasdair tells a tale of skeletons, charlatans and circus clowns, and James nearly derails the episode with an anecdote about crisps. Crisps... and lies. Chillingham Castle is a castle that was built in the 12th century and resides in Northumberland, England in a village named Chillingham from which it takes its name. It was initially built as a monastery and then was used as a stronghold mostly for defense rather than offense through the many centuries of fighting between England and Scotland. The Castle sits near the border between Scotland and England and so it was often under attack. Much of the Castle as it is seen today is the way it was originally built with a few additions. It is reportedly one of the more haunted locations in Europe. This haunting energy is not only a result of war, but of the horrific way in which men were imprisoned and killed within the walls of the Castle. Join Denise and Diane as they share the history, tortures and hauntings of this magnificent castle! Moment in Oddity features Coral Castle in Florida and This Day in History commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans.
