How Haunted? Podcast | Horrible Histories, Real Life Ghost Stories, and Paranormal Investigations from Some of the Most Haunt

Part two of a two-part special sees us return to the Wheatsheaf public house in West Boldon, Tyne and Wear made news worldwide in late 2004 when a psychic night for charity was the catalyst for a series of events so incredible, and horrifying, that the Discovery Channel turned it into an episode for their “A Haunting” series, which was watched by over 20 million people. The pub, which was named the most haunted in the UK in the same year, following these events, held a secret that had been locked away for a century, until Suzanne walked into the pub that night, and blew the whole thing wide open, much to the displeasure of a malevolent spirit which then threatened to kill her. You'll hear the rest of the horrifying chain of events directly from Suzanne Gill, the psychic at the centre of the events, in the first part of an interview I conducted with her all about that night at the Wheatsheaf, and the weeks and months that followed. What's more, you'll hear two very scary EVPs which appeared on our Zoom call, just after Suzanne had been telling me how the threatening ghost of Joseph had said he was going to kill her, when the audio wasn't heard at the time, but later was heard on recording equipment. Is this something explained away as a glitch on the audio, or something far darker? Let's find out together, when we ask How Haunted is the Wheatsheaf pub? The humble side salad could be on the way out as the rising cost of ingredients hits publicans' purses. Some South Australian pubs are considering dropping the often overlooked plate staple while The Wheatsheaf pub is offering extra chips in lieu of a side of salad, as so many were left uneaten. Andrea in Mt Lawley told Gareth Parker on Breakfast about a new style of salad at The Orient Hotel in Fremantle, which contained no lettuce, that was served with her fish and chips. "Do you eat the side salad or does it go back untouched?" asked Gareth. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And, hear from the Gillingham boss and one of the weekend goalscorers following their 2-1 win over Accrington Stanley. The result means the Gills are now four points clear of the league one relegation zone.

After breakfast, our day started at the local Wetherspoon's, Samuel Lloyd named after the founder of the local steel works which dominated the town, until Thatcher destroyed the British steel industry in the 80s. The usual issue with under staffing at Wetherspoon’s was exacerbated when the duty manager passed out and an ambulance was called. Worth the wait was the selection of beers from the Grainstore Brewery. www.grainstorebrewery.com/drink/ They stocked GB Best, Rutland Panther, a dark mild and Gold, their light golden summer ale. After the game we met in the Chequered Flag, part of the Greene King Hungry Horse chain. Ghost stories! Murder! A mysterious ferryman... Barry Shields is on his way to Alcatraz to record a podcast with inmate 431, but it's going to be even more exciting than he first imagined. Perhaps a little too exciting. With Edmund Fargher, Jonathan Monkhouse, Jinni Lyons, Katy Schutte & Tony Harris. Recorded live at Giggleloop at the Wheatsheaf in London.

In this episode, we finally catch up with Jade Flavell from Adelaide's - and arguably one of the Australia's - best craft beer hotels, the Wheatsheaf. But first, Matt and Pete catch up on things beer and mull over Coopers Anniversary Ale, and Coopers announcement that they are looking to make it the first of a planned craft beer range. When you get to it, you will realise that Matt didn't get this up and posted in time for Jade's mention of the Wheatsheaf's Fountain of Hoppiness Festival. Sorry. Today's Pacific rendition of the Beer Barrel Polka is presented in honour of Oktoberfest and is played by The Official Oktoberfest Band from their album Oktoberfest: A Beer Drinking Tradition. Buy it here, thank us later. You can now hear Radio Brews News on Stitcher Smart Radio which lets you hear us directly on your iPhone, Android Phone, Kindle Fire and plenty of others. Download it free today at any app store. You can still get us on iTunes or listen to us right here.

In a special release Radio Brews News podcast Pete sides with VB while Matt puts on the tin foil hats and sees shadows on the grassy knoll as the thrash out the Great VB apology in far more detail than you ever probably wanted discussed, as well as contrast it with this week's media release announcing Crown Lager on tap. We will still be releasing our interview with Jade Flavell from The Wheatsheaf in Adelaide. Today's Pacific rendition of the Beer Barrel Polka comes to us performed by that legendary crooner, Knuckles O'Toole, from his magnum opus, Sing Along With Knuckles O'Toole. Buy it here, thank us later. There's also a special appearance by Gemini Five. You can now hear Radio Brews News on Stitcher Smart Radio which lets you hear us directly on your iPhone, Android Phone, Kindle Fire and plenty of others. Download it free today at any app store. You can still get us on iTunes or listen to us right here. Show notes: Original media release announcing the change, 1 July 2009. Media Release VB REMAINS GREAT VALUE VB remains great value, retaining its wholesale price unchanged on stubbies and cans despite Federal Government excise increases and rising input costs. With bi-annual CPI-indexed excise increases applying from 1 August and in the face of rising input costs including malt and hops,  VB will hold its wholesale price in stubbies and cans, through tough economic times. VB will reduce alcohol-by-volume from 4.8 to 4.6% from August to fund this. “With a microscopic change in alcohol content, VB will come in line with most Australian mainstream beers”, said VB Group Marketing Manager, Paul Donaldson. “The beer tastes exactly the same, has the same standard drinks, and offers better value to stockists.” “We're investing behind the brand with one of Australia's biggest ever beer ads – VB Regulars – launching next week”, Paul said.  “VB is Australia's favourite beer and we're making sure it remains the real Australian beer. A bit of history: CUB reduces strength of VB CUB denies drinkers can taste the difference and no one is complaining. Fosters increases advertising spend on products to $30-million VB back to full strength

The gremlins hit the recording this week and a great interview with Jade Flavell from the Wheatsheaf and Steve Jeffares from the Local Taphouse was ruined. Rather than go without a podcast, we have repackaged a 2010 interview with Greg Koch from Stone Brewing explaining why he is passionate in trying to stop the grey importing of his beer. This interview created quite a storm when we first played it in November 2010 and many of our readers may not have heard it before. The story is relevant this week because of a story by Sam Fletcher that takes a look at Platinum Liquor, a favourite craft beer store in the tough Sydney market, but one that also proudly boasts of selling grey import beers, including Stone. Anyway, listen to Greg Koch and make up your own mind about the practice. Next week we will be back with our regular show. As always, for show notes and links head on over to Australian Brews News.
