There's been a lot of discussion recently about boosting Guelph's tourism profile. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, cities are working hard to rebuild their shattered tourism industries and Guelph is no exception, which is why the City of Guelph this week launched the Tourism Grants Program, designed to support the development and attraction of new tourism initiatives across Guelph. So here's an idea... Last fall, Guelph Politico explored the possibilities of dark tourism in Guelph for a special Halloween episode of the show. The Royal City, with its relatively sunny disposition and progressive appeal, doesn't look like a bastion for all things morose or macabre, but that's the candy coating for a seedy underbelly. And, as a bonus, Guelph is already well on its way to being a dark tourism hotbed. Our thriving dark tourism industry is largely grassroots. It's people like Greg Taylor, and Jay Wilson, and Bonnie Durtnall, people who have turned their fascination with the dark corners of Guelph into a lucrative side hustle. But would it surprise you to know that the University of Guelph actually has a professor who studies dark tourism? Perhaps he might be able to answer this question: Is Guelph a dark tourism hot spot and we don't know it? This week, we're joined again by Brent McKenzie, who is a professor in the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. He will give us a formal definition of “dark tourism” and talk about the local examples of the trade. He will also talk about the grassroots nature of dark tourism, whether dark tourism can go “too far”, and some of McKenzie's favourite dark tourism experiences whether they're in Guelph or not So let's talk again about Guelph's dark tourism future on this week's Guelph Politicast! Each Halloween season, All Things Judicial releases a special "Fright Court" episode, where the focus turns to ghostly legends associated with North Carolina's courthouses and legal community. IThis year, we focus on courthouse ghosts in New Hanover and Mitchell counties, and dive into the folklore of the 1866 murder of Laura Foster and subsequent trial and execution of her accused killer, Tom Dula (Dooley). This story became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon beginning in 1958 when the Kingston Trio released a murder ballad which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart."I've always believed that the hanging of Tom Dooley here in our little town of Statesville, North Carolina is the most widely recognized execution in U.S. history," said Steve Hill, curator of the Statesville Historical Collection. "Everybody wanted to make a dollar off of Tom Dooley while they could, and a lot of people did." The first segment of this episode is an interview with John Hirchak, who, along with his wife Kim, operate the Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington and The Black Cat Shoppe. Hirchak shares stories about three spirits who occupy the historic New Hanover County Courthouse, and we discuss possible explanations for hauntings.The second segment is a dramatic reading of an article published by the Mitchell County Historical Society which details firsthand accounts of seeing and hearing a ghost which haunts the historic Mitchell County Courthouse.In the third segment, we meet Margaret Ferguson Carter Martine from the Whippoorwill Academy and Village in Wilkes County. She recounts the Dooley story and shares her personal connection to a key figure in that historic event.Then we travel to Iredell County where we meet Keith Ryan, Director of the Historic Sharpe House. He shares details about May 1, 1868, the fateful day Tom Dooley was hanged in Statesville.In the final interview of this episode, we meet Steve Hill, curator of the Statesville Historical Collection. Take a 90minute walking tour of locations in Historic Downtown Guthrie as we visit the sites that are historically most active for paranormal activity. Oklahoma's First Capital and it's unique Victorian architecture create the perfect backdrop for storytelling at its finest. As Oklahoma's territorial capital, Guthrie's ongoing restoration efforts make the town's downtown area the largest Historic Preservation District in the nation.

‘Tis the Season of Spookiness and we kick off the month with a visit to the gravesite of one of the true “Masters of the Macabre”, Edgar Allan Poe. While in Baltimore, Maryland, we stayed at the Lord Baltimore Hotel where Vince Wilson gave us a tour of the old (and purportedly haunted) hotel, after which we walked outside and down the street for a couple blocks to an old cemetery and underground catacombs. Along the way and while at the cemetery, Vince gave us some background about some of the “residents” of the graveyard.Next we make a call to Paul Prater in Little Rock, Arkansas, who gives us some tips, suggestions and advice on how we can create a “Ghost Walk” in our own backyard. Because they have a lot of spirit.     Today we are discussing the Norman Ghost Walks in Norman, Oklahoma with Jeff Provine.      During the Norman Ghost Walks, you can take a stroll down Main Street and hear the history and spooky tales from Norman history, including a Griffin Memorial Hospital.   Norman is just 20 minutes from Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport and a few miles south of the intersection of Interstates 35, 40 and 44. Norman Must-Dos include world-class museums, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art andthe Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History along with the National Weather Center and the National Weather Museum.
