LINK IN BIO! Ben & Rob kick off their brand new Neill Blomkamp series with his stunning 2009 directorial debut ‘District Nine'. A loose re-imagining of the apartheid system of South Africa through the lens of refugee aliens and the corrupt corporation assigned to manage their resettlement, ‘District Nine' is a masterpiece of science fiction that pulls no punches in depicting the casual cruelty of oppression. Sharlto Copley, in his debut performance, perfectly balances comedy and tragedy as protagonist Wikus Van De Merwe, a mid-level bureaucrat who gets infected with alien DNA. But what sets this film apart from the white-saviour narratives that so often creep into stories of race? Is this Neill Blomkamp's best film? And what IS that black stuff Wikus get sprayed with?!To find out all this and much, much more, CONSUUUME now!!!Find us on your socials of choice at www.everymovieeverpodcast.com

It's time to talk PRAWNS! Cameron with return super-guests Noah Scalin and Victor Koressel discuss “District 9” from 2009. This movie had just as many SFX shots as a transformers movie for  ⅕ the budget, and it packs a punch like no other sci fi film! With a totally unique approach, Neill Blomkamp and his wife Terri crafted a story of alien encounters in Johannesburg South Africa, where Aliens come and no one cares. Do you remember seeing this movie in theaters? Summary:Released in 2009 for Tristar films with the backing of Peter Jackson, District 9 was directed by Neill (with 2 Ls) Blomkamp and his wife Terri Tatchell, based on Neill's short film “Alive in JoBurg.” Neill went on to direct Elysium and Chappie btw! District 8 takes place in a universe where refugee aliens  with a bug-humanoid look, called “prawns”, land over Johanesburg in South Africa in 1982, where they are  relegated to a massive slum, picking for scraps. The story begins in the 2010s, 28 years later, and follows Wikus Van Der Mere played by first time actor Sharlto Copley - a Michael Scott type government employee working alongside the weapons company MNU - Multi-National United to forcibly evict the 1.8 million “prawns” and move them to a concentration camp 200 kilometers outside the city. But when Wikus inhales alien power fluid during a shanty raid, he begins to metamorphasize into a prawn himself, setting off a bloody chain of events that will change both prawn and human history forever. Ever since I saw District 9 and learned of all the mythical stories behind the short film becoming a feature, I have been a massive fan of today's guest, Neill Blomkamp. Though Neill is here today to talk about his new sci-fi horror fiction film, Demonic, we also chatted up about his other films that have been successful over the years.Released in August 2021, Demonic follows a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed.Neill is a South African Canadian film director, producer, screenwriter, and animator, best known for writing and directing multiple-award-winning films such as Chappie, Elysium, and the iconic District 9, along with a plethora of short films, commercials, and special effect credits. If you have seen a few of Neill's works already, you would already know and admire his dystopian, action, and sci-fi style of writing and filmmaking. He depicts the short film in documentary style, with xenophobic social segregation themes. In 2009 Neill and his wife, Canadian screenwriter Terri Tatchell, co-wrote a short film titled, Alive in Joburg, which later became his feature film debut, District 9. Neill received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for this $210.8 million-grossing film from a $30 million budget.District 9 was a critically acclaimed splash, earning multiple awards, including the Bafta, the Academy, Golden Globes, etc., for its visual effects, editing, screenplay, and picture. And a 90% on rotten tomato. But the success of this film is truly in the story it tells and the inspiration that drove it. In 1982, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed "The Prawns," appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, was contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new 'Prawn' friends. As you will hear in our conversation, this project was inspired by parts of Johannesburg in South Africa's history Neill was learning. His journey involved gaining awareness of xenophobia from relatively poor South Africans against immigrants from Mozambique, Nigeria, and Malawi --- a sentiment is still prevalent with some South Africans to this day.The initial short film, Alive In Joburg that preceded District 9, had a socio-political theme shot in realism-based style paired with sci-fi but of performers sharing real-life experiences of illegal aliens/immigrants in South Africa. By the time he had to adapt the script for the feature, District 9, Neill had moved into an interest of South Africa's history, including apartheid, and precisely its border war period in the 1980s.As mentioned earlier, Neill started his career in this industry through visual effects and animation in commercials. When he moved to Canada at 18 years old, the pathway opened up for him to finally pursue his childhood dream of working in the film industry. He did Ads animation for some years while closely following the works of film directors who had gone the commercials to film directing route. One of his most prominent commercials to date, which was shelved by the clients based on creative differences, was a short film Superbowl ad for Nike.Even though he spent a short time doing commercials, Neill has held on to all the transferable lessons and tips to his filmmaking and screenwriting.IN 2015, Neill released his third feature film, dystopian sci-fi action fiction, Chappie, co-written with his wife, Tatchell --- starring Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, and Hugh Jackman. Chappie became a massive success at the box office with a gross of from a $49 million budget.Chappie, an artificial general intelligence law enforcement robot, is captured during a patrol and reprogrammed by gangsters after being stolen. He becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. Not to give too much away, let's dig into my interview with our incredible guest, Neill Blomkamp.

Change is often a good thing when it comes to switching up your routine or incorporating a new element into things except perhaps when it involves aliens. In this story, we follow Wikus as he slowly starts to become the very thing he is attempting to get rid of, the alien known as "prawns". With the help of a found-footage style to it as well as CGI that still holds up in some areas, this film is able to tell a story about the horrors of immigration and homelessness in a unique way using a sci-fi element and plenty of cat food.

This story is full of disturbing and mature material. It also deals with violence against children and sexual assault. So please bear that in mind before listening. Sheldean Human was born on the second of April 1999, to mother Elize and father Wikus. By the time we enter the story, Her parents divorced and Sheldean lives with her mom in Pretoria, a city north of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sheldean attended the nearby primary school, where her teachers described her as friendly and self-confident, independent, and a pretty child with her straight blonde hair cut into blunt fringe. On the evening of Sunday 18 Feb, 2007, at about 6pm, Elize went to go socialise with a friend who lived in a flat at the back of the commune property. It's Summer in South Africa, and the sun would still be up. Her daughter was playing in the front garden with another little girl who lived there. Mary's mom calls her in for bath time, leaving Sheldean in the yard alone. By 6:45pm, just as the sun is starting to set, Elize heads to the front to collect Sheldean, so that they can get a jump on prepping for the school day tomorrow, but she is not where she is supposed to be. Sources:1.     Cape Talk: http://www.capetalk.co.za/articles/257580/gentle-giant-piet-byleveld-remembered-for-his-legendary-detective-skills2.     Crimes uncovered: https://tubitv.com/tv-shows/503736/s01-e06-taken-the-sheldean-human-story?start=true3.     ENCA: https://www.enca.com/south-africa/south-africa-s-super-cop-the-top-cases-piet-byleveld-helped-crack4.     EWN: https://ewn.co.za/2017/05/24/sa-super-sleuth-piet-byleveld-dies5.     EWN: https://ewn.co.za/2017/06/01/watch-piet-byleveld-given-hero-s-send-off6.     https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2017-06-02-manhunter-bylevelds-last-case/7.     News24: https://www.news24.com/channel/tv/news/three-reasons-to-binge-gritty-cape-town-cop-drama-die-byl-201907168.     News24: https://www.news24.com/news24/sheldeans-killer-got-what-he-deserved-201202149.     News24: https://www.news24.com/news24/court-hears-how-sheldean-died-2008052210.  TimesLive: https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2017-05-24-everything-i-believe-in-one-word-hope-piet-bylevelds-cv/11.  True Crime South Africa: https://truecrimesouthafrica.com/ and https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2020-04-24-podcast--sheldean-human-silence-is-deadly/Bed music: Awen by The Mind Orchestra is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License(https://freemusicarchive.org/music/The_Mind_Orchestra/The_Mind_Orchestra_-_Singles/awen) Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I recently met a fascinating man of God. Wikus Nel grew up in Bloemfontein in the Free State and obtained his B.Com Law and LLB degrees there at the University of the Free State. It was also at that time that he met his wife, Karissa. After being admitted as an attorney they both relocated to Port Elizabeth where Wikus specialized as an Industrial Relations Consultant and became the Regional Manager of a Labour Consultancy firm.   At the end of 2016, Wikus felt God calling him to step out of the corporate environment and into marketplace ministry. In 2017 he joined the team of Doxa Deo, where he still serves today. In 2017 he started his own consultancy, Zeteo Business Solutions, and in 2018, together with his wife started with Kingdom Business Rescue which recently became known as Reflect (https://www.facebook.com/Reflect-111258774112649)       Check out "Our Nation": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnkDzKgbBlY   Join our marriage course: https://qkt.io/ltmo   For more info on our ministry: lovekeymission.com  bookings@lovekey.com

In this episode Mark talks about another of his favourite films: "District 9", directed by Neil Blomkamp - which is an enthralling 2009 science-fiction action film that deals with such subjects as xenophobia, racism, social segregation, and identity. The premise of "District 9" centres around the arrival of an alien species to Earth, whose spacecraft has spent over 20 years hovering over the city of Johannesburg, in South Africa, and over the course of the film we witness and we are presented with evidence of how this alien "prawn" species is treated by humanity, where they have been detained since their arrival, and what the opinion is of those who live in the shadow of the alien spacecraft and also those who have been tasked with controlling this alien race. The story of "District 9" and the main protagonist, Wikus van de Merwe played by Sharlto Copley, expertly shows several examples of the spectrum of humanity that exists on our planet - and the film asks us to consider what would humanity really do and how would humanity truly react to the seemingly life-changing revelation that we are not alone in the universe if they were asked to take care of a refugee alien species who they know very little about. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Moody’s decision to leave SA’s credit rating unchanged gave the country a welcome reprieve. However downgrade risks still remain and next Friday, 3rd June, will be the day we know our reckoning when S&P (Standard & Poor's) give their verdict on the creditworthiness of our nation. Wikus Furstenberg, portfolio manager at Futuregrowth Asset Management, is of the view that the downgrade is inevitable. Our stunted growth, high unemployment, poor growth of human capital and the politics du jour all point to the S&P decision next week being firmly negative. He does however have some interesting views on what happens next.

No one is surprised at the current global equity market volatility and some might even argue that a contraction was always on the cards as valuations had become stretched while supporting economic data was looking less than commensurate. Traditionally at times like these, fixed interest assets become a safe haven for investors fleeing falling share prices. This was however not the case when many markets across the globe experience record equity declines on Monday, 24 August. Heavy trading, particularly on US bourses saw what has come to be called a ‘flash crash’ – stock exchanges try to ease panic selling by inserting circuit breakers at various index levels which when triggered halt trading for 15 minutes. The theory is that this will stop the panic. But of more interest is the effect that this had on our own local bond markets resulting in good buying opportunities for the astute fixed income manager. Wikus Furstenberg explains.

Over twenty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National Unit (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology.
