Taariq will be taking off on the 20th of November with 11 other runners from Walkerville, Johannesburg to Moses Mabhida in Durban. The run will take about 76 hours. The 25-year-old, along with 11 other runners, is hoping to raise R50,000 to support mental health institutions and establish community workshops to offer support to men who are struggling with mental health issues. The journey started when Taariq found a group on Facebook called Man of Valour. The group had a lot of motivational quotes and words of advice for men struggling with mental health. He scrolled further and saw a post about a run from Joburg to Durban, he DM'd the page admin with “I'm in”. “There's officially 19 of us involved with the crew (drivers, medic, chef etc). I'll fly out on Wednesday morning to Joburg. We starting from Eldos (Eldorado Park). We'll be using the back route,” he explained. Phillipa Feher, Head of Marketing at Mr Price Sport, and Zola Phoswa, who handles Public Relations, surprised Taariq. According to Phillipa, she was going through her social media when she saw Taariq's story pop-up. “Men's mental health is close to my heart,” she explained. She added that doing something of this magnitude through sports was beyond admirable. Phillipa and Zola came in with the intent to help Taariq and his 11 team members. “We came in to talk to Taariq and kit him and the team for their run. We also want to join them at the end at Moses Mabhida,” said Zola.

It's the 21st of July 2004, Eliot Makhubela and his nephew Samuel were cutting grass in open patches of land near the village of Walkerville, South Africa. Eliot made a living drying and selling this long grass as roof thatching. It had been a long day, and although they were knocking off, they decided to stop by one last spot. This was where they were going to start the next day, so they were scouting it out essentially. It was Samuel who first spotted something in the grass although he didn't know what it was, but as soon as Eliot saw it, he knew it was a body. There in the scrubby veld lay a young woman, naked and lying on her back, her face turned to the side, and clearly dead with three gunshot wounds. They didn't know it at the time, but this was the body of Leigh Matthews, a student who'd been missing for 12 days, a young woman whose disappearance the whole country had been talking about for days. Did you ever hang out at Fast Eddie’s downtown? Have you strolled through Walkerville on your way to Kildare House? Or maybe you recall a first date at the Dominion House… When we parked our Storymobile at the foot of Ouellette right beside the Detroit River, we heard stories from Windsorites about everything from downtown’s grit and Sandwichtown’s history to the walkability of Walkerville – and learned that there is so much more to the City of Roses than a terrific view of the Detroit Skyline! Special thanks to the City of Windsor, the Arts Council Windsor and Region, The Ontario Arts Council, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their generous support of our project, and to everyone in Windsor who supported our performance installation and took the time to share their stories -- you can find a complete list on our website. The Tale of a Town is created and produced by FIXT POINT and developed in collaboration with the National Arts Centre to capture the collective community memory of Canada's main streets -- one story at a time. Produced by: Alison Broverman Created in collaboration with the artistic team including Sherry Campeau and Katie Swift, with original music by Jake Nicoll.
