We discuss how motherhood is portrayed in Star Wars. As a movie series focused on father and sons in its first trilogy, Star Wars doesn't leave a lot of room for mothers, but they play important roles, especially in the Prequel Trilogy. In the Old Trilogy, we discuss Aunt Beru's role and Leia's sometimes motherly behaviour. We then look at Shmi Skywalker and Padme in the Prequel trilogy. Finally, we look at Leia in the Sequel Trilogy. We also debate Mara Jade and Leia in Legends. The awesome and reylostatic TROS trailer just came out, and that's what Lee, Mary, and Denise are talking about! We talk about our general impressions of the trailer, than analyze it shot by shot. This is the second episode in our Psychology of the Characterization series. Our premise is that the three leads of the sequel trilogy: Rey, Kylo, and Finn, share the same core conflict which develops in different ways because of their individual character traits, life situations/environments. In this episode we focus on Finn's struggle with childhood trauma, the loss of his identity and his successful use of mature defense mechanisms to form healthy relationships and find a sense of purpose. While we appreciate the elegant resolution of some of Finn's conflict in The Last Jedi, we feel that overall his character has been underwritten and hope for further development of his arc in Episode IX. In this episode, Lee and Denise analyse why Kylo can be considered the protagonist of The Last Jedi. We look at his arc in Episode VIII, how he is a central point where the plots converge, and how Kylo is central to both climaxes of the movie: in the Supremacy with Snoke, and in Crait with Luke. We analyse Rey's arc, and how a lot of it was about Kylo, which can be seen as a problem, but on the other hand, had great Reylo moments.
