Our special guest this episode is Lee Kemp, a three time World Champion in Wrestling (1978, 1979 and 1982 all in the 74 kg weight class) and held the record for being the youngest World Champion. In addition to being a champion wrestler, Lee is a father, a wrestling coach, a public speaker, and an author. He learned many of the skill sets needed to navigate his life on the mat. A child of the 60’s, he was adopted at the age of 5, before adoption learned how to find his own contentment in the situation he was in. From a young age Lee learned how to focus on what’s important and tackle whatever he needed to get done. Lee’s childhood with his adoptive family involved a lot of hard work. His family moved from the city to a rural neighborhood and he worked on a farm. There was a certain strictness his father held, if farm work needed to get done it had to get done. Over the summers of Lee’s youth, he learned about finding contentment in hard work and became comfortable being uncomfortable. Lee started wrestling in high school in the 9th grade and made the varsity team in the 10th grade, his first season in varsity he won as many matches as he lost. The summer between the 10th and the 11th grade year was the turning point for young Lee. He attended a Wrestling Camp that the wrestler Dan Gable was at right before the Olympic games of 1972, what he learned from Dan Gable at that camp became the catalyst for Lee becoming a different wrestler and different person. Lee gained a new mindset from that wrestling camp with Dan Gable. Coach Lee went on to win the state championship as a junior in high school, defeating the defending state champion.  As the episode progresses, Ron and Chris ask Lee about his philosophies on consistency. Lee describes that at each point in his journey to be a champion wrestler he took every opportunity to learn more about his game and his opponents. While Lee was in wrestling camp with Dan Gable, he was the only willing volunteer that would allow Dan to try out wrestling moves on him. Lee knew that if he could understand how one of the greatest wrestlers performed offensively and defensively he could at a minimum learn something new and potentially incorporate it into his style. Lee’s determination has always been contagious and a positive influence to his community. An example that Lee shares is the story of his wrestling teammate Pat Christenson. Before defeating Dan Gable, Wisconsin had a drought of national champions in wrestling. Pat Christenson shared with Lee after defeating Gable he realized he could aspire to become a world champion also. Our guest today is athletic movement specialist Lee Taft.  Lee is one of the most highly respected game speed development coaches in the world, and has taught his methods around the world.  Lee combines an extensive knowledge of sport movement and physical education means and brings this into the physical preparation space in a meaningful way.  Lee has appeared twice prior on the Just Fly Performance podcast and has been a great source of practical ideas and knowledge on speed development for me over my years as a coach. One of the big things I find more and more coaches looking for is ideas on the long term development of an athlete.  By the time an athlete gets to high school, let alone college and the pro’s, the vast majority of the “ground-work” has been done in regards to the speed and reaction abilities of that athlete-specific to their sport.  Unfortunately, there are many pitfalls for young athletes, who miss many critical windows of early development for a variety of reasons. This podcast is all about the development of speed from a young age, how velocity rules training (even if technique is “ugly” early on) as well as some varied topics on Lee’s take on warmups for training, and sport, as well as thoughts on vision training and low-box training for athletes.  Whether you work with youth, or established athletes, or are a sport parent, this is essential information. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster and Lost Empire Herbs. View more podcast episodes at the podcast homepage. Head to lostempireherbs.com/justfly for 15% off of your purchase! Timestamps and Main Points 6:10 What coaching athletes in the private sector was like in the 1990’s, as well as the state of athletes in that time period, versus the 2010’s and beyond 10:40 Some of the big rocks that have caused young athletes time to get taken up, and increase pressure and strain 15:40 Fun games and warmup ideas for athletes 28:55 How Lee designs his warmups and creates a competitive situation with reactive tracking work 32:30 How Lee links his warmups to the rest of his workouts, and how he will utilize games that fit with the greater theme of the session 35:10 Key performance indicators that Lee looks at in regards to how well his game-speed training is transferring 45:40 Some things that are doing a disservice to athletes early on in their development of game-speed, etc., and the importance of maximal velocity training for young athletes, and how skill development can come along gradually 57:00 Advice for an athlete in their warmup for a sport game (versus warming up for a practice) 59:55 How Lee looks at vision training from a “raw” perspective 1:09.10 How “low-box” training works and how Lee uses it in his performance regimen “Back then, it was really common for parents to say “Lee, we need something for our kids to do, what do you got? Now days, it’s the opposite” “We talk about ACL’s now, like we talk about drinking water… it was this big news (back in the 1990’s)… mentally kids are not absorbed in any one process, because they can’t” “I could get results quicker back then (in the 1990’s), just through sound training, because (the athletes) had more to give me.  Now, you take one step forward, you take another step back” “Sometimes I don’t want then thinking… just go play, react!” “I love soccer related things for athletes that don’t play soccer, it’s tremendous for the groin and adductors, especially when they aren’t used to doing it” “Kids don’t know how to read spin (on a ball) unless they are exposed to it” “Days vary, because if I sense the athletes are fatigued, tired, bored, upset, we play a lot… I’ll sprinkle in teaching while they are playing, but that will be the bulk of the workout” “We’ve put them in situations where they have to make good decisions, and that’s how I judge (KPI’s for game-speed transfer)”

A rare CEO whose area of expertise resides in, in her words, that intersection between mission and money, she is a sought-after writer and speaker as well as a recognized leader and expert in multiple fields: social enterprise businesses, fair trade enterprises, and specialty coffee importers. Lee sits on the Research Advisory Council for the Specialty Coffee Association, and holds active leadership roles in the Climate Collaborative, and the B Corps movement. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling to new places, puttering around in her garden, and hanging out with her dogs Ruby and Felix. Based in the heart of Minneapolis, Peace Coffee has been proudly roasting, pedaling, and brewing outstanding coffee since 1996. Under Lees leadership the company has garnered local, national, and international recognition from being named one of the 10 Most Sustainable Coffee Businesses in the U.S. by Civil Eats, to earning the Best Coffee Roaster title by Minnesota Monthly and Growler magazines, to being recognized as one of the top places to work by Minnesota Business Magazine. The company has also been honored with list placements on Best for the World, Community, B Corp, 2018, and 2019; Ten Most Sustainable U.S. Coffee Businesses; and Most Ethical Coffee Companies, Fair World Project. She operates at the intersection of mission and money, bringing thought leadership and expertise to audiences in social enterprise businesses, fair trade enterprises, and specialty coffee importers. In this episode of the Intentional Greatness podcast, Lee joins us to share her journey as a female leader, and the story behind Peace Coffee. She explains how she navigated the uncharted territory of entrepreneurship and pursued her passion. Follow Your Passion Lee has always been interested in the concept of using entrepreneurial tools to solve problems in society and to fuel work that has a distinctive mission behind it. Initially, this manifested itself as a career in consulting. However, during her time as a consultant, she had the opportunity to work with a client that she immediately fell in love with. Lee found her passion and purpose in the coffee industry, joined her client's team, and eventually, she purchased the company from them in 2016. Believe it or not, she had never anticipated becoming an entrepreneur, but we can learn from her experience. Don't let your fears and limiting beliefs deter you from following the path that your passions lead to. There is so much to gain from listening to your intuition. Stick With Your Vision When Lee made the transition from consultant to entrepreneur, she had to be quick on her feet. If entrepreneurship is a path you're considering, the lessons Lee shares are of great value. It is easy to get stuck in your bubble while trying to get the business on its feet, but if you deviate from the mission and core values that drove you to pursue your dream in the first place, it will not be sustainable. As a business owner and leader, it is critical to center yourself in what your goal is and create a concrete plan to get there. Stick with your vision and execute it.

Our country is rife with political conversations that tend to divide people. These exchanges can become more challenging when political differences occur in families and close relationships, where a divergence of ideals can strain connection. When the writer, teacher, and food activist Lee Warren recently witnessed one of her peers using aggressive language towards people of the other political spectrum, the experience spurred her to write Can We Love Our Political Enemies?, a piece where she curates an online conversation about having empathy for people who think differently. Lee is the co-founder and managing partner of SOIL - the School of Integrated Living - an organization that teaches organic food production, regenerative systems, and community living. She is a sustainability professional whose experience spans over 25 years and whose interests include rural wisdom, sustainable economics, community, and conscious dying. In this episode, Lee and I explore how we can connect with and love people who have political ideals different from ours. We discuss holding friends to a higher standard of empathy and illustrate how social media tends to exacerbate division among people. We describe what it’s like to experience political differences within families and close relationships and explain how fear and trauma can influence our politics. We also highlight the need to bring curiosity into our ideological differences and discuss how we can use non-violent communication to hold political dialog.   “If we want community, the thing to do is to build real, human coalitions between people who have different perspectives and values.” - Lee Warren   This week on Relationships! The current education system uses data for harm. By ranking and comparing students, we create winners and losers in the classroom. And while the hope is that competition will motivate students to learn, the opposite holds true, as students on the wrong side of the bell curve lose their enthusiasm for school altogether. So, how can we reinvent our schools to use data for joy? How can we inspire ongoing student engagement and help our kids strive for their all-time best—each and every day? Career educator Lee Jenkins is the creator of L to J Consulting, a practice that helps school districts keep students engaged from kindergarten through Grade 12. Lee’s revolutionary system is built on the principles of continuous improvement and growth mindset, and the schools he supports boast six times the learning of the average classroom. In this episode we talk to Lead singer from boyband 911 Mr Lee Brennan. In their five years together, 911 scored ten UK top 10 singles with 10 million singles and 6 million albums sold worldwide. The band announced their split in February 2000 but 12 years later they reunited for the ITV2 reality-documentary series 'The Big Reunion', along with Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, B*Witched, Five and Honeyz. Due to the highly positive reception, the groups went on an arena tour around the UK and Ireland. Their comeback album Illuminate: The Hits and More was released on 8 September 2013, along with their comeback single "2 Hearts 1 Love". In early 2014, 911 headlined their own UK tour. Aside from his time in 911, Lee has had to overcome many obstacles in his personal life. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma twice, first aged nine and then again aged 15, of which treatment left him infertile. After 911's split in 2000, Lee continued song writing whilst pursuing an acting career. And on 14 September 2006, Brennan married Lindsay Armaou of Irish girl group B*Witched but they unfortunately split in 2011. In this episodes we talked about: The formation of 911 and how the bands drive and work ethic helped them achieve some of the biggest goals achievable in the pop world Being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma twice and how this experience has led him to have real perspective and appreciation of life and a growth mindset Why Lee believes when you have a fear, you should feel the fear and do it anyway The pressures of your image, being judged and the dangers of social media. Coping with the loss of identity and purpose after the band ended by seeking professional counselling and reading personal development books and why we all need to regulate our thoughts in a positive way even if we think we’re ok. How gratitude in everyday life and appreciating the smaller things can lead to good things bouncing straight back to you Why you need to be positively selfish and learn to say no to certain situations   How Lee dealt with his divorce to wife Lindsay and his view on endings and being kind to yourself in this situation. Let's face it - no one wants to be dependent on help from other people, but is there really a way to live independently in today's interconnected society? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from business leader and publisher, Lee Bellinger. In his conversation with Jeremy, Lee opens up about his background, how he got started as a publisher, why he decided to create and market his own product, and much more. You'll want to pay close attention to this fascinating episode featuring Lee's story - don't miss it!  Can you imagine what it would be like to become so in sync with the news cycle that you feel like you can begin predicting news events before they happen? Chances are, your answer to that question is, "No." Lee Bellinger accomplished what many believe is impossible - he has become such a student of the news that he can accurately predict major events like the fall of the World Trade Center. Lee has a fascinating take on how he keeps a finger on the pulse of world events, make sure to check out the link to his website located in the resources section at the end of this post!  What would you do if you found yourself in the room with key leaders and politicians? Would you try to strike up a conversation, stand away in awe, or would you respond with apathy? Let's face it - politicians aren't the most popular group in our society, but they do hold powerful influence. Lee had the privilege of networking with many politicians when he would give cruises of the Potomac River. While Lee could have exploited his political connections - he chose to take a different route.  If given a choice between helping others or accumulating wealth and power - most people would choose wealth and power. Which one would you choose? Working with politicians and focusing solely on the political angle quickly wore thin for Lee, so he decided to change gears. Lee wanted to make a more meaningful impact on his readers by empowering them to take control of their situations and prepare for the future. This direction eventually led Lee to develop and manufacturer his hit product, the PowerWhisperer. You can learn more about Lee's fascinating creation by visiting the link to his website located in the resources section.  Too often, business leaders get so caught up in their own goals and efforts that they fail to grow as business leaders. What is your plan to grow and develop as a leader? What role does mentorship play in your plans? Lee was content to keep his business headed in the same direction until he connected with like-minded business leaders. Once he connected with the right leaders - Lee was convinced that masterminds and mentoring relationships were essential for professional growth. What are you waiting for? If you haven't participated in a networking event or reached out to key leaders in your industry for mentorship - now is the time!  Resources Mentioned on this episode Independent Living News https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K34uGjZ7EZk Intro Music by Kidd Russell Sponsor for this episode Rise25’s mission is to connect you with your best referral partners and customers. Do you see them as obstacles to overcome or ways to expand your thinking and grow as a leader? According to Lee Bellinger - the best approach to negative people is to remove them from your life carefully. It won’t be easy - Lee warns - but it will be worth it! Don’t let negative people drag you and your business down - learn from leaders who have been through the trenches - like Lee.  When was the last time you did something that you were really proud of? After failing miserably at retaining Millennials, Double Forte went back to the beginning and created a culture where all generations thrive; as a result, turnover is low, and when employees do leave, overwhelmingly they stay loyal to the firm – sometimes even returning.   With her foundational work, Lee shows leaders how to create the best possible workplace culture so their employees will stay longer than they intend, and when they do leave, advocate for the company, defining a new loyalty contract and a new model of business sustainability. The Come Up After graduating with a degree in Medieval Studies (go figure), she transitioned in communications working for the Weber Group. A few years went by and she took a VP position at The Bohle Company, a small communications firm out of Los Angeles. Another few years there, and she was recruited for a similar role, but at a much larger company called MSLGroup. At MSL, she was in charge of the team working with one of the world’s largest companies in video games, SEGA of America. SEGA liked her so much that within 10 months of being at MSL, she was offered asked to come on as the VP of Corporate & Consumer Communications, overseeing the work of over 700 people. Five years later, just before the launch of the DreamCast, Lee was asked back to Weber Group (now Weber Shandwick), but this time in an Executive Vice President role. Another five years past, and Lee decided it was time to venture out on her own. In September 2002, Double Forte was formed. Now nearly 17 years later, Double Forte has offices in San Francisco, New York and Boston and employs dozens of people full-time. The Shift to a Millennial Workforce When Lee started Double Forte she already had extensive experience recruiting and retain top-talent. At the time, they were looking for senior leaders with 10+ years of experience. However, during the time of the Great Recession (2007-2010), Lee recognized a lack of new talent making their way to the field. Lee realized that there was no way they’d be able to find the perfect candidates to fill the company ranks, so they decided to take inexperienced millennials and give them on-the-job training.  Lee’s first millennial was a 22 year old woman named Stephanie. Little did Lee and the rest of the company know, Stephanie was also the owner of an emotional support animal, who would come to work with her under ADA mental health laws.  Despite the added fur to the team, Stephanie was a rockstar, and Lee decided to go all in on hiring millennials. The following year, the company hired six millennials within eight weeks of each other, and after three months, all of them were gone. Lee was flabbergasted. In all her years, never had something like this ever happened. “In my career – hundreds, thousands of people that worked for me – I had never 100% failure… in people,” Lee recounts. “There’s no way, in 25 years of hiring great people, that it was bad here. We didn’t hire people wrong, we kept them wrong. One person could’ve been a bad hire, but all of them couldn’t have been.” It was then that Lee set out to understand what was going on with millennials; where was the disconnect? How do you motivate them? Thanks, Lee Caraher! This week on MIA Radio, we present our second chat with Doctor Lee Coleman. In the first interview in this series, we discussed Lee’s career, his views as a critical psychiatrist and his 1984 book Reign of Error. For this second interview, we focus on psychiatry in the courtroom and why the psychiatric expert witness role may be failing both the individual on trial and society at large. We also focus on Chapter 3 of Reign of Error: The Insanity Defence, Storytelling on the Witness Stand. In this episode we discuss: What led Lee to his involvement in the courtroom as a psychiatrist testifying as to the reliability of psychiatric testimony itself. How both psychiatrists and psychologists have been given a role by society to judge both the current mental state of an individual on trial and also the potential future behaviour of that individual. How important it is to address the three dimensions of past, present and future when looking at psychological testimony. The role of psychiatry in the trial of Patty Hearst, when required to provide evidence that she has been brainwashed and therefore was incompetent to stand trial. How Lee and a colleague, George Alexander, came to arrange a press conference to address the issue of the reliability of psychiatric or psychological testimony. How speaking out in this way ultimately led to many years of opposition not only by psychiatry but also by attorneys on both sides of the debate. The legal definition of the term ‘insanity’ and the context in which it is used. How if someone is found legally insane, the punishment may be far worse and the incarceration far longer than if that person were found guilty. The details surrounding the trial of Dr. Geza De Kaplany, who committed a gruesome murder but came to be represented at trial as having multiple personalities and being mentally disordered. The inconsistency often found in both the defense and prosecution in the courtroom when it comes to subjective assessments of the mental state of an individual. That it is crucial that people band together to share information and to actively demonstrate and have conferences and influence legislators because we can’t rely on media channels and we can’t rely on professional bodies. 3 Point Perspective: The Illustration Podcast

Comic Cons & Art Fairs Comic conventions and art fairs take place all over the globe, with almost every major city in the United States hosting one. With the large audiences that attend these shows it is a good place for illustrators to show their work and start selling. In this episode we will cover what the world of comic conventions and art fairs is like, ways to get into shows, and the differences between them. This is one of the easiest ways (depending on some conditions) to make money as an artist. Lee White has experience showing at art fairs, whereas Jake Parker and Will Terry have experience with the comic convention circuit. Money range [5:32] The amount of money an artist can make at a show depends on a lot of variables such as location of the show and the types of products being sold. At Lee White’s best art fair show he made $24,000 USD over a three day art fair. On the comic convention side, at Jake Parker’s first convention he made enough to cover the cost of the show and for travel. At Jake’s best comic convention he broke $9,000 USD gross. His average is $5,000-$6,000 USD gross. At Will Terry’s best convention he made $19,000 USD gross. His average is between $7,000-$9,000 USD gross. How Lee, Will and Jake started showing [8:38] Lee got his start showing at art fairs with Crafty Wonderland. He was invited to show when a table opened up. Following that experience he started actively looking for art fairs to attend. In his mid 20’s Jake was in the comic anthology, Flight. The editor of the book purchased a table at San Diego Comic Con, and invited the other artists to use the extra space. Jake went to sell prints and books. After getting a taste of what it was like to table at a show, he decided to do his own show. His first show outside of San Diego was CTNX. Following that success he knew it was possible to be successful at other shows. Will Terry’s first comic convention was a disaster even though he spent two years researching how to sell. Through that experience he learned how to be successful. He now has an assistant that takes Will’s art around the comic convention circuit. Will only personally attends 3-4 of the shows. Will has a series of YouTube videos where he goes into detail about his first experience tabling at a comic convention. Will Terry’s comic convention video series: Lee White: “It’s worth it as an experience. You cannot anticipate how much energy these things take. They are really hard.” Having extra people to help you is really helpful because there are so many factors involved. Doing this full time as your only source of income can be really consuming. For Lee, Will and Jake they use art shows as supplemental income sources. Artists who do this full time can go to 30-40 shows a year. Differences between art fairs and comic conventions [21:05] Art fairs are typically during the summer. Usually outside in parks, but sometimes in convention centers. Artists purchase 10 foot by 10 foot booths. The average attendee at an art fair is older (50 years-old to 70 years old). There are not a lot of collectors, it is mostly people looking for artwork to put on their walls. They want to purchase originals. Prices for pieces at art fairs range from $50 USD to $20,000 USD (higher end of that scale are people buying originals). Lee White: “The more specific the story in my image the less likely it is to sell. The bigger the character in an image, the less likely it is to sell.“ Lee focuses more on environment elements and doesn’t get too specific with storytelling. In order to be successful at art fairs you have to strike a nice balance between illustration and fine art, and create images people want to hang in their homes. Lee’s Secret Sauce for Art Fairs: “[Illustrate] a moment that people can interpret what’s happening versus showing them what’s happening.” Create images that two separate people can view and come up with different stories. Just give the audience a hint of the story. James Jean is a good example of this principle. His work transcends illustration and taps into the art fair market. Website James Jean Instagram Comic conventions [30:40] Comic conventions are focused on popular culture. There is an artist ally section where artists can buy tables to show and sell their work. Attendees typically have $100 and spend that across maybe 5 different artists. What sells the best at comic conventions are things people already know such as characters from popular films, tv shows or cartoons. Comic conventions products typically sells from $4 to $70. There is also a commission market, where attendees will pay artists to draw their character or some other character doing something specific. Some artists open their commission list before the show, whereas others only do commissions during the show. Jake does commissions at show and works on them during down times or at the hotel. He can make an extra $2,000 to $3,000 USD depending on what he is charging. Commission from artists at comic conventions can range from $20 USD all the way to $600 USD. Jake uses fan art he sells at comic conventions to get people to come look at his table where he also has pieces from his original stories. He uses this as a way to expand the audience for his original content. How to start [47:23] When trying to get into art fairs or comic conventions it is really important to understand the market. Lee tried to sell at CTNX with Jake and Will and his art did not fit that market. Step 1: Go visit the shows not as a fan but as research. Take notes, take photos, be detailed and focused. Step 2: Make inventory. You can’t do a show if you don’t have things to sell. Start with prints, prints are cheaper and easier to sell. Make sure to use archival ink and paper so your work doesn’t fade. Jake Parker says “every sell is a person you touch.” When you sell a print you are building a relationships with that person. There is a lot of repeat customers, so if you use cheap stuff you lose that future business. Prints generally have low overhead cost with a high markup price. T-shirts per-unit cost are higher and they can be hard to sell and keep the proper sizes in inventory. Stickers are also harder (higher per-unit cost and lower markup price). People often just want the image so they will buy the smallest size just to get it. Don’t lose sales by selling products with higher per-unit cost. Jed Henry is a good example of this, at shows he only sells one size. Ukiyo Heroes Start small and work your way up. Both with what show you start with and with your inventory (not small products but a smaller product list/inventory). Check to see if there is a show within an hour of your home. This is a good way to start small because you have lower overhead costs. Lee white: “Stay local until you get your market figured out and then start branching out.” It is important to know there are different niche markets in each show. So know your work and who it appeals to. Comic conventions are generally easier to show at then art fairs. Art fairs are curated so. For example, Lee only gets into about half of the art fairs he applies for. List of every convention in the USA Specifics on how to get into art fairs [01:06:29] For art fairs start with craft fairs, they are easier to get into. These shows are usually in the winter and indoors. Art Fair Sourcebook. Has art fairs sorted by region, how many people attend and how much they spend on average. This source is expensive, but it is good data to have when catering to an audience with a larger budget. Zapplication is another good resource. Horror and success stories [01:07:55] Will Terry: For his first show he printed 1000 of each print, 23 different pints, so 23,000 prints total. He couldn’t even fit all his inventory in his car. Printing alone cost him $5,000 USD. He figured he would be showing at a lot of conventions so he was offsetting the cost. At his first show he only made $1,500 USD. After that he was pretty nervous. But luckily he was able to make it up over time, but it was scary after that first show. Lee White: At his first show he sold an original, but didn’t bring any bags. So had to give the customer his original art in a trash bag. At a different show, Lee was busy setting up his booth, running to and from his car. When he was almost finished he realized the fanny pack he kept all his money in ($3,000 from his last art fair) had been open the whole time. Almost all his money flew into the wind before the art fair even started. Jake Parker: At a show in 2018, one of his tables was set up against and facing the wall. So he moved the table. Luckily no one told him to move it back even though it was obviously extending further out than anyone else’s. Also at that convention he had made a display structure out of foam core to hang prints. It kept falling over and he had to keep taping it. Overall it was just bad presentation. Convention etiquette You have to learn convention etiquette. Watch out for ‘booth barnacles,’ they are attendees who stay for way too long and get in the way of making other sells. Jake has a polite way to remove booth barnacles. He waits for an opening in the conversation and sticks out his hand and says “It was so nice to meet you thanks for coming.” After that they usually leave. Also don’t just bring your portfolio to show and expect artists to review it. Always ask if there is a time to show them, don’t just assume. A good way to get a very quick and honest critique is to ask “what is the one main thing I should change in my portfolio?” For more information on critques listen to [Episode 10: Critiques] (https://www.svslearn.com/3pointperspectiveblog/2018/8/8/episode-10-critiques) Gear Information forthcoming. WE Have Cancer (http://www.wehavecancershow.com) On today’s episode of Causecasts we are so happy and honored to have Lee Silverstein, host of the WE Have Cancer Podcast, as our guest. Lee created this podcast a few years ago as a way to inspire hope and connection within the community of people affected by cancer. Lee’s positive and realistic outlook has directed the tone and reach of his work, which now has a humble yet committed and engaged following, and for Lee, there is nothing that he would rather be putting his time into. During our interview, he even shares that the years since his diagnosis have been the best of his life. Lee sees his work sharing these stories as the ultimate way to honor and provide grace for both guests and listeners, and has experienced the profound effect of this process himself. Lee also explains why he sees podcasting as such a powerful medium for the message he is broadcasting. He acknowledges the direct line it provides to the human voice and how it is something he has come to cherish greatly. As you might expect with a conversation such as this, it is both hopeful and sad, beautiful yet tragic, and this bittersweet atmosphere is touching on many levels. With the fitness industry poised to further expand its impact and transformation within the wellness industry space, we're growing smarter today from one of the world's most influential minds in the active healthy lifestyle sector, Lee Embley, to discuss the best-of-the-best takeaways from his 40+ years around technology innovation and digital trends. With his impressive body of work, he is now leading a mission to connect the role of fitness to an even larger ecosystem of wellness, driven by artificial intelligence and big data sets through his up and coming platform Optimal AI Coach. We know now more than ever that fitness has been and will always be a powerful and integral piece in what is at the core of all club member's goals, which is to be healthy and well in their body, mind, and spirit, so on this podcast we're excited to unpack the nuances of what Lee believes is the "biggest miss" right now in the fitness industry, how human longevity plugs into our standard fitness models, why the ultimate value proposition for wearable technology is wellness and not just fitness, and how Lee's own health journey has inspired him to radically shift his focus in the coming years. With fitness industry experiencing the most radical transformation in decades, what are the most powerfully distilled concepts that club owners, operators, and fitness professionals must understand when it comes to fitness and wellness technology?  The answer to that question and much more takeaways for club owners, operators, and fitness pros in this episode with Lee Embley. About Lee Embley  Over the past three decades Lee Embley has been innovating and influencing the bleeding edge in the Active Healthy Lifestyle Sector, building brands in retail, connected-tech, digital-media, and financial-services, including the following: ProWoman Sports USA first all women sporting goods retail brand, merchandising functional design, fashion and leisure wear, early footwear product development with ProWoman Strider the first women lasted track and field running shoe, equipment to the fit-active female market. PWS became the first national sales organization to secure a exclusive distribution with hundreds of colleges and universities with female specific sports programs. Acquired, Tennis Lady Group UK.  Lee also developed the First e-Commerce business model "Network Credit Service,"providing credit reports to small business via, major information hubs i.e. CompuServ, Dow Jones Newsnet. NCS provided 500,000 businesses via trade associations and national franchises system achieving a $53MM in second year revenue. (Acquired by TRW New Credit Service) Mr. Embley founded the NCSB, the first sports, performance, data and evaluation platform. An athletic scouting and evaluation system to enable high school athletes who are not recruited a system to evaluate their athletic skills by professional scouts. Acquired, Pro-Serve, as well as "Radiance Rewards," the first AHL credit cards for health fitness conscious women. His work continued with Leap4Life the first "Wearable Marketplace" designed for the health and fitness consumers to fully experience the motivation of active lifestyle. L4L hacked and mitigated the sustained engagement factor with a unique combination of attributes. The methodology and technology applied data science and social to achieve success. His latest body of work is the "Optimal AI Coach: O.AI.C" an application to enhance fitness and performance through deep learning and integration of lifestyle data via technology. All the data collections are in place, wearable, mobile, retail to create the next generation highly personalized coaching system. Listen To Episode 045 As Lee Uncovers Why Lee's "S.T.E.E.P. model" is still viable today as the pressures on the human condition are quite profound How Lee constructed his business strategies based on this analytical model he adopted while at McKinsey How understanding the S.T.E.E.P. analysis will define a way to determine shifts triggered by seminal events in Social, Technological, Economic, Ecological, and Political segments.  How these five pillars are cornerstones of every civilization and how technology can support Unpacking what Lee sees as the "Fatal Flaw" in fitness: A lack of sustained engagement for clubs  The impact of wearables vs. the impact of active healthy lifestyle data: what happens with the new era of AI and how it will change operators everyday tasks Exploring pattern recognition via wearables Microdata vs. Macrodata: Understanding the data sets of the human ecosystem  Exploring the trends in women's fitness "from beauty to strength" transition  The "Big Miss" and why using relevant data sets in fitness is ripe for disruption Challenging the paradigm of seeing technology as a threat to the 4 walls to monetizing member's outside of them  Plugging in human longevity to the standard fitness model through intrinsic motivation  The Optimal AI Coach: Lee's bleeding edge technology platform that will use accelerated data sets to help shift fitness into wellness Understanding "Game Theory" models when contrasted with Self Determination Theory  Why the ultimate value proposition for wearables will be wellness from the data not just fitness  How Lee's battle with Stage 4 Cancer has inspired the emotional, physoical,  Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Lee reminds us that the need for speed creates new value. “Things” only have value when they are put in motion. Anything standing still is valueless, be it money, inventory, information, an empty hotel room, data, machinery, technology, people. Early warning systems are designed to foretell of impending disaster. Those in any industry who ignore the warnings will eventually fail, as seen with the assault on the retail sector which is not a surprise. Lee’s strategy is to identify weakness or obsolesce within a sector under siege and define alternative strategies. Always focused on the evolution of the consumer of the product or service enables Lee or any savvy professional to spot an early trend before it grows into a recognizable market. With a large focus on collecting data, Lee believes that it's the use of pattern recognition via artificial intelligence that will truly guide the transformation in our fitness industry to serve an even larger ecosystem of wellness. When we look at the wearable tech component, this is the area that is most ripe for disruption. Lee believes that the active lifestyle persona must be taken into consideration including their body, mind, and spiritual capacities in order for technology to serve their deepest needs. With the exponential growth in wearable technology's ability to support these three capacities the future of fitness and wellness technology is both inspiring and promising. Power Quotes From Lee "When it comes to connecting the dots of success for technology, it's distilled down to one term and that is relevance. If there's not relevance, then at the end of the day then there's no sustainability. The real issue is properly determining where each generational segment is focused on the spectrum of the active healthy lifestyle" - Lee Embley on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "Anything standing still is valueless. It doesn't matter whether it's people standing still, money standing still, information standing still. The only way it gets value is when you put it in motion. The reason there are thousands of brands in the graveyard is because they could not accept the fact that the change was upon them."  - Lee Embley on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "You have to start with the question 'where am I and my capital at risk?' and then get into some significant valuation. Forecasting the economy does not necessarily mean that your segment of the economy is going to be disrupted."  - Lee Embley on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned From Lee Lee Embley on LinkedIn LEAP4LIFE on the web  TechnoGym + AI Developments  The Big Miss. You just tell everyone else what to do, they do all the work and you call it a day. Well, that’s not exactly how it works. The entire workplace can be toxic when you have a big, bad boss. Employee turnover is higher, stress is rampant and this causes employees to miss more days of work. To top it all off, those who do show up to work are terrified and suffer through an excruciating work experience. It doesn’t have to be that way, and today’s guest is going to show us how to change it.   Lee Cockrell was the Executive VP of DisneyWorld Paris. He began his career by being the big, bad, boss! He used to scare and intimidate his employees and even shares a life changing moment. Lee is an expert in Time Management and he teaches it each and every week. But today, we aren’t focusing on time management and productivity, but we are turning to the soft skills.   Today Lee is here to share his transformation story. His focus now is to help us build great relationships at work. One of the keys to building great work relationships is understanding that you really can’t control people. Lee Caraher is a CEO and acclaimed communication strategist known for her practical solutions to big problems. She started Double Forte in 2002 as a new kind of communications firm designed to work with good people, doing good work for good companies, by providing the best results and service in the business. After struggling with how to work alongside Millennial clients and employees (Lee’s agency is now 35 people, 16 of whom are under 30) and figuring out how to bridge the generation gap, Lee has written a book about the topic, Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work. She's learned a lot about how to reduce employee drama in the workplace and is affectionately known to her friends and colleagues as the “Millennial Whisperer” although she personally prefers Millennial Champion. Lee has a reputation for building cohesive, high functioning teams who are not only productive but who also bring a sense of fun to the workplace. She is a straight talker who doesn't pull  too many punches. However her dynamic personality, big laugh and great sense of humor balance the scales (and have gotten her out of a lot of trouble). She started her career in communications in Boston and before moving to California to work with well-known PR firm The Bohle Group, followed by Manning, Selvage & Lee. She moved to the Bay Area in 1995 to serve as the Vice President of Corporate and Consumer Communications at the $1.6 Billion SEGA of America. She then served as Executive Vice President of The Weber Group, and Founder and President of Red Whistle Communications, both Interpublic companies. Lee is active in the community and currently serves on the Board of KQED Public Media as Chair of the Nominating & Governance Committee, Grace Cathedral’s Board of Trustees as the Chair of the Committee on Trustees (Governance & Nominations), and on the Board of Trustees of Menlo College, Atherton. Previously Lee was the Chair of the Board for Community Gatepath, San Mateo County’s largest organization serving the needs of people with developmental disabilities, and was the founding Chair of the Board for the St. Paul’s Choir School. She consults with other non-profits on effective board organization and practices. A graduate of Carleton College, with a degree in Medieval History, “which she finds useful every day”, Lee lives on the Peninsula with her husband, two sons, and a blind cat. Lee Silverstein got a call on New years Eve to let him know he had cancer and needed Chemotherapy. Lee is the man that gave "The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary" film it's name. Lee has been battling cancer since he was five years old, and he considers himself more than "A podcaster," but a messenger. He delivers hope, information, and inspiration. Today we hear: Feedback from his audience that brought Lee to tears How Lee has secured three sponsors by finding products that fits his niche perfectly How Lee had strict criteria for his sponsors What pitch Lee uses to get sponsors. A "Because of my podcast" story that you HAVE to hear. We always want to deliver value in our podcast episodes, and right now your audience doesn't know you, and probably (to be honest) doesn't care who are what you are. They are asking, "What is in it for me?" Be sure to give them something that makes them wish there were more episodes. Why My Eleven Years of Podcasting Sets Me Apart I recently discovered another "Podcast About Podcasting," and was checking it out. I'm sure the host is a fine person that loves their family and wants to help their audience. Some people come into the space, and only repeat the favorite memes at the time and never go about checking if they are true. So I threw up in my mouth a bit when I heard them perpetuating the same old podcasting tips that are just wrong. This included The Blue Yetis is a great microphone (it is if you are in a very, very, very, quiet room - which 99.9% of podcasters are not - so it's NOT a great microphone) You only get 8 weeks to be in new and noteworthy (TV show podcasts go in and out of New and Noteworthy all the time) You should launch with at least three episodes so when people subscribe you get three downloads (this is false. It does not happen automatically. Your listen would have to choose to download the back catalog) My friend Ravi from Digital Access Pass as well as two podcasts (subscribeme.fm about membership websites, and Cut to the Chase )has a new book out called Confessions of a Wanna Be Podcast Star that goes over many of the myths that a puked out over and over. In the book he covers these myths and much more. Now for the record, Ravi uses a Blu Yeti, but thankfully in his book explains how you need a really quiet room (which he has). I was quoted quite a bit in the book, as well as other podcast consultants. In some cases, Ravi did his own investigation and provided screenshots to show the results of his research. I read it over two nights and found it an easy read, will be pointing people to it in the future when I see they have been sucked into the bad advice train that comes through the Internet on a regular basis. Take Aways From DC Podfest This was a great event for me. I met so many people who I had never met and were brand new to podcasting. The event was run very professional, and all the speakers were great in keeping to their time slots. One of the coolest phrases to describe what we do as podcasters. We are digital influencers. Put that on your business card. I heard about Amolto from Mathew Passy from podtopod.com which is a skype recording software for the PC (that I will need to check out). Keep your interactions from Social Media. So for me, I had some people say some very nice things about my presentation on twitter. Take a screen shot and put those on your website. http://www.gratisography.com/ a cool site for Royalty Free images which I have added to podcastingresources.com. leadership, role model, example, relationships   Episode 067 Being a Role Model at Work with Lee Cockerell URL: http://julieannsullivan.com/being-role-model-work-lee-cockerell It seems like being a boss in the workplace would be an easy job. Great leaders at work can improve work performance and cultivate the next generation of great leadership in the workplace. People want to come to work and learn and grow, and when you feed that part of people, the keep coming back for more.   Lee’s Bio: Former Executive Vice President, Operation for Disney World for ten years. Before Disney, Lee held executive positions with Hilton Hotels for 8 year and Marriott for 17 years. Lee now gives seminars and keynote speeches around the world on Leadership, Management and Customer Service. You’ll discover:   Why being a big, bad boss didn’t serve his employees well The effects of being a good role model The turning point that happened about halfway through his career How he took ownership of his bad behavior and began to work on himself Why humiliation and intimidation didn’t work in the workplace What humiliation and intimidation reveal about the person exhibiting those behaviors How to create a culture where everyone matters and they know they matter Why people want to do business with you when they have a good relationship with you People, including employees, want to be valued and acknowledged Be careful what you say and do because people are always watching Why Lee’s children told him, “Dad, everything was fine until you got here.” The one work trip that Lee makes his grandchildren take with him each year How Lee makes himself available to the next generation each day. He’s accessible! Spend your time where you can make a difference. If you can’t make a difference, don’t spend your time on it. Why you should do the hard things Why Lee jokingly says his Mother was a terrorist! Find out Lee’s superpower! In Episode 19 of The Side Hustle Show, Lee Drozak from MyOfficeAssist.com shares how she got started as a virtual assistant and how you can do the same. We talk setting up shop, getting your first clients, setting your prices, establishing a niche, and more. Quick background on this side hustle if you’re not familiar - a virtual assistant is not Siri, despite how much Apple wants to hijack the term, it’s a real-live person that works for you remotely as an independent contractor. This is a huge industry overseas in countries like India and the Philippines, with giant call centers staffed with low-cost workers. But you might be surprised to learn there is a thriving VA industry right here at home, and many VAs are side hustlers like you, or started their business as a side hustle. And we’re not talking about a race to the bottom on price either. According to a recent survey, nearly 90% of VAs charge $20/hr or more, and nearly 60% charge $30/hr or more. Subscribe to The Side Hustle Show on iTunes! Subscribe to The Side Hustle Show on Stitcher! In this episode, you'll learn: The "eureka" moment of working from home. How Lee got her first clients. How to get paid what you're worth. How to determine which virtual assistant tasks you love and should build your business around. Why industry certifications might be overrated. The best free resource for aspiring virtual assistants. Lee's #1 tip for Side Hustle Nation. Links mentioned: ivaa.org VirtualAssistantForums.com (Thank you, Tess, for the introduction to Lee!)
