Third film trilogy in the Star Wars franchise

A Star Wars movie is back in theaters for the first time since 2019! In this episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester kick off our analysis of The Mandalorian and Grogu with a discussion of the major storytelling decisions underlying the film, which is directed by Jon Favreau and co-written by Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor (The Book of Boba Fett). As the sixth movie of the Disney era and the first Star Wars film built upon source material from outside the preceding movies – specifically the three seasons of the Disney+ streaming series The Mandalorian as well as adjacent series The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka – the creation of The Mandalorian and Grogu faced a number of challenges not previously faced by theatrical Star Wars, including an imperative to produce the movie on a considerably smaller budget than the Sequel Trilogy releases while reviving fan and customer enthusiasm for Star Wars on the big screen and the ancillary merchandise revenue that has long accompanied Star Wars films. This context in the state of the franchise explains a number of key decisions about the story built for The Mandalorian and Grogu, including the desire to acknowledge the full range of previous Star Wars stories and fans, from the Original Trilogy and Expanded Universe to the Prequels, The Clone Wars, and Disney-era films, animation, and publishing. We also examine the themes found at the heart of the story, and the non-Star Wars cinematic influences on Favreau's movie. We then revisit a frequent aspect of the Hyperspace Theories podcast: examining how Star Wars' longstanding association with the monomyth story structure shapes the tale being told in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Unsurprisingly, as a standalone film rather than a segment within a trilogy, The Mandalorian and Grogu readily aligns with the cinematic story structure expressed by Christopher Vogler, a distillation and updating of the classical monomyth found in the work of Joseph Campbell. This plot structure also guides the character arcs for The Mandalorian and Grogu, which features the two titular characters as well as significant character development for a third: Rotta the Hutt, who faces his own father-son thematic turmoil as well as pivotal choices about his path in life and the future he seeks for himself in the galaxy far far away. The dead speak! Having decimated the once peaceful STAR WARS fandom, the SEQUEL TRILOGY caused Baconsale to largely avoid talking about the whole franchise as of late. However, a sinister format has risen from the ashes of the podcast, and now Joel, Kent, and Zack must defend these three MOVIES, with only a few rant breaks to REALLY release pressure. We'll force ourselves to be positive as we quote George Lucas, discuss questionable plot points, and learn why Zack should be a screenwriter. In the end, we may even convince ourselves that The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker don't STINK. Maybe…. They fly now, so press play.
It's Star Wars Day! And to celebrate the GateCrashers crew gathered for a chaotic, rambling discussion about all things Galaxy Far, Far Away. Marvel's new five-issue Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge -- Echoes of the Empire debuts this week, with a story that spans the Saga timeline yet zeroes in on events between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 travel to Black Spire on Batuu. Written by Ethan Sacks, who's an old hand at plotting real-world aligned stories such as these (Galaxy's Edge, Halcyon Legacy), illustrated by Jethro Morales and Roi Mercado, colored by Rachelle Rosenberg and lettered by VC's Clayton Cowles, the first issue starts strong, hitting the right beats with a crafted blend of nostalgia for the Original Trilogy while proliferating The High Republic and Sequel Trilogy, too. It's been confirmed that Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Iger were the ones who made Disney pivot from the Original Trilogy to the Sequel Trilogy for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. It was a COLOSSAL failure that Disney is only now trying to correct by introducing Vader, Luke, Han and Leia into the theme parks. Prepare for a chat about the most polarizing chapter of the sequel trilogy with the Star Wars Escape Pod's "Bogan's Advocate" session for The Last Jedi. In this episode, the crew tackles the subversion of expectations head-on, from the startling introduction of a disillusioned Luke Skywalker to the "no-twist" revelation of Rey's parentage. While the crew marvels at the film's top-tier cinematography and striking use of red in the Snoke's throne room duel, they don't hold back on the pacing issues of some Canto Bight events or the introduction of new Force powers. It's a balanced, high-energy discussion that explores whether Rian Johnson's creative risks paid off or pushed the franchise too far off the predictable path. The year 2025 marked the sixth without a new Star Wars movie in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker concluded the Sequel Trilogy. In the past few years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC superhero films have struggled with consistency at reaching their prior levels of box-office earnings and fan satisfaction. We found it interesting, then, that two 2025 superhero movies – the MCU's rebooted The Fantastic Four: First Steps and DC's new iteration of Superman – showcased several prominent storytelling elements that we wish Lucasfilm had been able to incorporate into the Sequel Trilogy, as we talked about on the blog and podcast when the Sequel Trilogy was in development and production. On this episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester discuss how these two movies show the path that Star Wars missed in advancing new and important ideas for today's heroic tales. These two superhero movies have three big ideas in common that would have worked well for the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, too. First, neither First Steps nor Superman is an origin story. The titular characters, the Fantastic Four quartet and the Metropolis icon, are already established celebrity superheroes on their worlds when the movies begin. Rather than learn how to use their powers, they instead face the challenges of how to use their powers – and what to do when their powers can't solve the problem they're facing. Second, both movies are focused on themes of family and teamwork, rather than the lone-hero formula so familiar from Joseph Campbell's monomyth. The Fantastic Four has two siblings, a husband, and a best friend, and each of them has a character arc. James Gunn's Superman finds support from several superhero allies while Clark Kent relies on his colleagues at The Daily Planet to help carry the day, and his emotional journey in the films is inseparable from his connections to his birth parents on Krypton and the adoptive Kents on Earth. Third, both The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman are works of aspirational heroic fiction, fitting audience expectations for the characters as well as finding human truths in their themes and characterizations that urge the audience to want to be better people, too. In tandem with these analyses of the two superhero movies, we examine how the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy would have benefitted from similar storytelling elements. Star Wars contained plenty of examples for telling stories about Jedi apprentices who are already trained in the Force, rather than necessitating Rey's first movie to mirror Luke's in discovering her connection to the Force in the first instance. Similarly, the Sequel Trilogy mostly abandoned the Skywalker family saga and failed to form a consistent and coherent heroic trio like the Original and Prequel Trilogies did. The Sequel Trilogy also failed to successfully tell aspirational stories with its legacy characters or its new characters. Perhaps most importantly, the storytellers developing the Sequel Trilogy had access to plenty of precedent, both within Star Wars and in contemporary genre stories, to have been able to identify areas in which the Star Wars franchise could help to push forward new ideas and themes in today's storytelling, rather than simply repeating the old tropes and beats from the Lucas films. It only took Disney SEVEN YEARS to retheme parts of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge to the Original Trilogy. Yes, Vader, Han, Luke and Leia will be coming to Disneyland in April soon because everybody knows the Sequel Trilogy is DEAD. Even Disney, apparently. In honor of the tenth anniversary of The Force Awakens, Ryan and Dylan kick off the Star Wars specials with a look at the highly divisive, yet often wonderfully brilliant, conclusive trilogy to the Skywalker Saga.
[School of Movies 2025] It has been ten years since Disney relaunched Star Wars in the cinema, delivering what felt like a special globally-unifying grand, historical event... that a bunch of Star wars fans complained felt too much like the 1977 original special globally-unifying grand, historical event. J.J. Abrams has proved over the years that he is far better at restarting big, exciting new worlds off with a bang (as he did with Mission Impossible and Star Trek before this) rather than somehow closing them out with anything approaching that same level of satisfaction (as with Lost and The Rise of Skywalker). But after all these years with all the Star Wars movies and TV and books and comics and video games that have played out since then, is The Force Awakens STILL my unlikely favourite of the whole series that has been with me since my life began in 1980? Yes. Put simply, this film transcends its own oversimplifications to become a joyful celebration of Star Wars, retreading many previous paths with a heartfelt energy the world badly needs again. And in this revisit show, Sharon and I talk about what has changed since we first recorded nearly four hours on it at the end of 2015 along with multiple guests at the opening of the gates to new adventure. That show can be found here, and since we also revisited the third film in the Sequel Trilogy back in 2024 after a serious re-edit allowed me to make peace, that leaves The Last Jedi for some point in the near future.

Mark Hamill said it was dumb that Luke Skywalker died from an overdose of the Force, and doesn't seem real happy about his role in Disney Star Wars. THE FORCE AWAKENS approaches it's 10TH ANNIVERSARY! It's crazy to think it's been a decade since the first Sequel Trilogy film kick-started this new era of Star Wars. Today however, we begin our episode by talking about another anniversary of the film that began STAR WARS! STAR WARS (1977), or as it's known now A New Hope, celebrates it's 50TH ANNIVERSARY! To celebrate this gargantuan birthday, Lucasfilm has announced it will re-release the THEATRICAL CUT of the film! Since George Lucas released the Special Editions, a restored theatrical cut has been elusive. Today we discuss the expectation and excitement of experiencing this film how it originally was screened!Additionally, 2026 sees the release a of next Star Wars film since the Skywalker Saga wrapped up in 2019: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU. While we don't have too much information about what happens in this film, a new (alleged) plot leak gives us some information to speculate on. Join us as we look forward to celebrate both the past AND future of STAR WARS!• • •TRIAD Of The FORCE is a STAR WARS+ podcast hosted by Gus, Nani, & Chase—Puerto Rican and queer creators sharing deep dives, and heartfelt conversations from a galaxy far, far away. Let's talk about this Mando trailer, synopsis, and that AWESOME throwback poster! We also touch on John Boyega playing Monday Morning Quarterback with what he would have done if he was the producer of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. We also have a fun round of our segment Will of the Force, like will Snoke be involved at all with the Mandalorian movie and that dormant M-count cloning subplot with Grogu. We also take some time at the top of the show to give our thoughts on the attack on the first amendment and fans (consumers) speaking out against the decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel. If you like having a great time talking Star Wars, you've found your home, because if you're listening to this broadcast, you are part of The Resistance! Thank you for listening to our show and supporting our podcast!

Cur·mudg·eon [kərˈməj(ə)n] noun a bad-tempered person, especially an old one. We celebrate two legendary curmudgeons who brought the characters of Han Solo and Qui Gon Jinn to life: Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. Both have been on the interview circuit lately, both have been looking back at their Star Wars careers, and both are sometimes grateful and sometimes salty about their experiences in a galaxy far, far away. We listen to recent interview highlights from the two to get their perspectives as now-older gentlemen. We report on fresh news about the casting of Matt Smith in STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER, shooting later this year, and we look forward to the 50th anniversary of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE with news of a theatrical release happening in 2027. But what version will it be? Plus, listener feedback gets us looking at what and who are responsible for the Sequel Trilogy going “off the rails” and more!
