The Best Years of Our Lives made an impact when it was released back in 1946, both on the Academy with its numerous nominations and wins, but also on the movie-going public. William Wyler's film brought real-life issues of the men returning home from battle in WWII and dealing with acclimating back into society ... into the world they once knew, yet has changed.  This is a special film full of important themes including social class, reintegration, disability, and friendship.  With incredible performances by the entire cast, The Best Years of Our Lives is a great piece of filmmaking. After almost eight decades does this film still hold up? Is it still worthy of the top prize at the Academy Awards? Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about The Best Years of Our Lives, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1946.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHeart RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.com or jackferdman@gmail.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.Send us a text

Joel’s still banging on about how Sydney has the best coffee in the world — and now there’s proof! Toby’s Estate in Chippendale just topped the list at the "World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops Gala" in Madrid. Sip that! Then, we dive into Meghan Markle’s cringe-worthy appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show — someone get the Netflix PR team on the line, stat. From the coffee buzz to canine longevity, we chat about the new drug LOY-001 that could help big dog breeds live as long as the little ones. More time with our fur babies? Yes, please! The Glossy’s are packed today: Jennifer Hudson’s unexpected NBA moment (ball to the face!), Justin Timberlake’s arrest drama (and the cop who didn’t know JT's tour was a thing), and Jane Fonda’s WILD bear encounter — she literally roared at a bear to save her grandson. Iconic. Plus, Lady Gaga is set to host SNL this weekend with the release of her new album Mayhem. We're ready for the drama and the bangers. We wrap it up with a cheeky NBA Kiss Cam fail (spoiler alert: rejection hurts) and a throwback to Air Canada’s 1972 dance floors at 30,000 feet. Yes, a mid-air disco. Get your flat white ready — preferably from Sydney — and let’s go!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When twenty-nine year old Loy Evitts failed to return to her Kansas City, MO office job after taking a late lunch, her co-workers were concerned.  When they found her car, parked in its assigned spot, but could find no trace of the woman, that concern transformed into worry.  They quickly called her home and spoke to her husband, Don, who immediately knew something had to be wrong. The next day, Kansas City Police kicked off a massive search for Loy.  They interviewed co-workers and friends, they went around town and established a timeline which showed everywhere and everything the woman had done.  But they couldn't fill in a small window of time, five to ten minutes, and it's believed that is when she vanished. When an anonymous caller claimed responsibility for the crime, police quickly located and questioned him but they could never confirm whether he had knowledge of the crime or was just a sick prank caller.  Forty-seven years later, Loy has never been found and her abductor has never been identified.  To date, her disappearance is the longest unsolved missing persons investigation in the history of Kansas City.Sponsored by:  Shopify!  Visit Shopify.com/trace to sign up for your one-dollar-per-month trial today!Trace Evidence LinkTree & Social MediaMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/#truecrime #truecrimepodcast #realcrimes #disappearance #disappeared #missing #unsolved #unsolvedmysteries #evidence #investigation #missingperson #traceevidence #homicide #detective #coldcase #creepy #truecrimestory #truecrimestories #kansascrime #missouricrime #loyevitts #evitts #abductionBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/trace-evidence--3207798/support.

Opera Star Jonathan Tetelman: Triumphs, Transformations, and New Roles Explored in Exclusive Interview

Classical Post

Jonathan Tetelman is quickly becoming one of the opera world's most in-demand tenors — not only for the distinctive radiance and warmth of his voice, but also for the wide palette of emotions he brings to the characters he portrays. But as I discovered during a recent sit-down with Tetelman, early in his career the Chilean-American singer had many doubts about whether he could take on the deeply dramatic roles he's become known for. In fact, he almost pulled out of one of his first big European engagements — portraying Paolo in Riccardo Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini at Deutsche Oper Berlin — because of that self-doubt. "I knew the story and thought it would be a good challenge for me," Tetelman shared in our conversation. "But as I was preparing the role, I noticed how heavy and difficult the role was, and I almost pulled the plug on the whole thing, because I felt like I wasn't ready to do it." Then the Covid-19 pandemic forced the world into lockdown, which gave Tetelman six months to immerse himself in the role, unpack its complexities, and build the mental and physical fortitude he needed to make Paolo a character of flesh and blood — not an easy feat for a young singer. "To perform this very dramatic role at 32 was really kind of an eye-opening experience, and an exciting possibility for me to perform other dramatic repertoire in the future. At the time I was really only singing things like Rodolfo and Alfredo, much more lyric repertoire. To get a taste of the verismo, it hooked me immediately." Tetelman credits his success in that production to its director, Christof Loy. "It was the first time I worked with a director who helped me bring out my characterization, and also helped me understand the characterization of my colleagues in a better way. Working with him really challenged me, but it was the thing that was kind of missing in my presentation. From then on I used a lot of the tools and ideas that he gave me for this production." Those tools and ideas have only increased Tetelman's meteoric rise in the years since that Deutsche Oper Berlin production. His first two albums for Deutsche Grammophon, 2022's Arias and last year's The Great Puccini, received rave reviews, with the former winning Tetelman the 2023 Opus Klassik Award for Young Talent of the Year. And this month he's bringing the nuanced approach to character-building he honed with Loy to two major Puccini role debuts at the Metropolitan Opera: Ruggero in a new production of La Rondine, and the naval officer Pinkerton in Anthony Minghella's Madama Butterfly. For Tetelman, building a legacy in the opera world now means not only bringing artistry to the music he performs, but also caring for the characters represented in opera — and helping audiences see themselves in the emotional turmoil and triumph these characters experience. "They're supposed to be human and they're supposed to be full of emotion and everything that embodies humanity. And I think the music is just the vessel that allows us to feel those emotions. I want to be one of those people who can really bring those things out, and help other people understand and feel what these characters feel." Madama Butterfly is on stage at the Metropolitan Opera through May 11. Tetelman's latest album, The Great Puccini, is available across all major streaming platforms. — Classical Post® is created and produced by Gold Sound Media® LLC, a leading New York marketing agency serving the performing arts industry. Nothing Matters More Than More Time: Continuing the Discussion of Aging Therapies w/ Loyal for Dogs

Loyal for Dogs (Loyal / Cellular Longevity) is redefining the paradigm of aging in dogs. NAD+ supplements currently on the market claim to "slow the effects of aging," and to "support health as [dogs] age," but they do not promise to extend lifespan. Nor are they FDA-approved. Loyal emphasizes that aging is the primary modifiable risk factor for most degenerative and chronic diseases in dogs. Their mission? To target the aging process itself, opening doors to healthier, longer lives for dogs. At WVC 2024, I had the chance to chat with Dr. Brennen McKenzie, Loyal's Head of Veterinary Education, and he recently joined me on Petworking to continue the discussion. We talked about the 3 pioneering drugs targeting critical molecular pathways associated with aging that Loyal has in the pipeline. These include: - LOY-002 for senior dogs (10+ years old), focusing on metabolic health to extend lifespan. - LOY-001 & LOY-003 for larger dogs (40+ lbs), targeting hormonal overexpression of IGF-1, which Loyal has linked to the shorter lifespans experienced by large dogs. Loyal is seeking FDA approval for all of these products, and by 2025, Loyal might be able to market LOY-001 under conditional approval, as the FDA has already granted "reasonable expectation of effectiveness." That means by next year, there is a significant chance that if you are a large dog owner, your veterinarian could prescribe a product that can actually extend your dog's life.

Today's episode is about the science of slowing down the aging process … and why one biotech company has found some success with dogs. Last November, the New York Times reported that a company called Loyal had reached a milestone in the development of safe life extension drugs for our pets. This drug, which is called LOY-1, works to slow the aging process in large breeds. But Loyal's work holds major promise for helping all dogs live longer. It could even crack open some of the mysteries of mammalian aging, which could lead to discoveries that extend the lives of humans. Today's guest is the CEO and founder of Loyal, Celine Halioua. We talk about her experience as a female biotech founder, the weird economics of pharma, the ethics of life extension, the science of why big dogs die young, her theories for how to slow down the aging process in dogs big and small, and the possibility spillover benefits for humans who would like a few more years with their family and friends. Order of Service: - Prelude: O Blest the House - Johann Pachelbel - Hymn 549 - O God, Our Lord - The Versicles (pp. 120-121): Led by the choir - Matthew 13:44-45: The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. - The Word Was God (Rosephanye Powell): In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made, that have been made. Nothing was made, He has not made. All things were made by Him. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. - 1 Corinthians 1:22-31: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” - Hymn 511 - Lord Jesus Christ, With Us Abide: vv. 1, 2, 8, 9 - How Firm a Foundation - Hymn 579 - Abide in Grace, Lord Jesus - Lord, Open Thou My Heart to Hear: Lord, open thou my heart to hear And through Thy Word, to me draw near; Let me Thy Word e'er pure retain; Let me Thy child and heir remain. Thy Word doth deeply move the heart, Thy Word doth perfect health impart, Thy Word my soul with joy doth bless, Thy Word brings peace and happiness. To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Shall glory, praise, and honor be Now and throughout eternity. Amen. J. Olearius, 1611-84; Tr. M. Loy, 1828-1915. Setting by Jacob B. Weber. - Homily - Hymn 43 - Holy God, We Praise Thy Name: vv. 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 - God of Ages: God of the ages, whose almighty hand leads forth in beauty all the starry band of shining worlds in splendor through the skies, our grateful songs before thy throne arise. Thy love divine hath led us in the past; in this free land with thee our lot is cast; be thou our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay, thy Word our law, thy paths our chosen way. From war's alarms, from deadly pestilence, be thy strong arm our ever sure defense; thy true religion in our hearts increase; thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace. Refresh thy people on their toilsome way; lead us from night to never-ending day; fill all our lives with love and grace divine, and glory, laud, and praise be ever thine. Book Vs. Movie: The Thin ManThe Dashiell Hammett Novel Vs. the 1934 Classic FilmThe Margos are looking for actors with chemistry and witty banter, so we had to dive into the fabulous world of Nick and Nora Charles and The Thin Man. What began as a feature in Redbook magazine in December 1933 turned into a best-selling novel by one of the most important writers of the 20th Century--Dashiell Hammett. We discussed Hammett when talking about The Maltese Falcon, and for several reasons, The Thin Man became his last novel. Hammett was a passionate anti-fascist who joined the Communist Party in 1937. By the 1950s, Congress investigated him before the House of Un-American Activities (HUAC), where he refused to “name names.” He went to a federal penitentiary in West Virginia and found himself impoverished afterward. His partner Lillian Hellman would go on to run his estate posthumously. The Thin Man is a story about a former New York City police officer (Nick Charles) who marries a wealthy socialite (Nora Charles) and spends his time between the city and San Francisco living as a bon vivant. One day, back in NYC, he runs into Dorothy Wynert, the daughter of a former client looking for her father.Later, we learn that his secretary (and former lover), Julia Wolf, was found murdered by his former wife, Mimi. The police think she was murdered by her gangster friend Shep Morelli. Mimi's new husband is much younger, tall, handsome, and slim (the THIN man!) There are all kinds of banter, double-crossing hijinks, and more plot holes than you can shake a stick at. The movie, directed by W. S. Van Dyke in 1934, stars William Powell & Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles and their dog, Asta. Screenwriters Albert Hackett & Francis Goodrich simplified the plot in the first six films about the couple. Powell and Loy shine with their glamorous look, which delighted audiences during the Great Depression, and would go on to be nominated for four Academy Awards (It Happened One Night swept that year.) So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? In this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of Dashiell HammettMovies during the Great DepressionThe legacy of the movieThe cast of the 1934 film: William Powell (Nick Charles,) Myrna Loy (Nora Charles,) Maureen O'Sullivan (Dorothy Wynant,) Nat Pendleton (Lt.
