American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 struck the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon. United Airlines Flight 93 went down in a field in Pennsylvania after its passengers fought back against the hijackers. Almost 3,000 people died that day. For 25 years, the echo of that tragedy has been heard – everyone remembers where they were, how they heard, and the paralyzing fear in the aftermath. Drinking is a really acceptable thing in the US. Most towns have liquor stores on every few corners. Every home decor store has products with some variation of the same, tongue-in-cheek humor: “Mommy's Go-Go Juice,” “I'm not whining, I'm wine-ing,” or “It's WINE O'CLOCK!” More often than not, explaining that you're sober can be more awkward than explaining that you binge drink every other weekend. In fact, in the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 79.2% of people aged 12 and up reported that they had consumed alcohol at some point in their lifetime.  Drinking is, for most people, considered “normal.” And for Laura McKowen, drinking was just a part of life – of work, of her social life, of relaxing. I get questions all the time about being a remarried widow. How did I do it? How did I know? Is Matthew jealous of Aaron? As long as people have been grieving, we have found a way to memorialize our dead people. We grievers keep voicemails, photos, letters, clothes – whatever we can to remember our people. With the rise of AI, it's no wonder companies desperate to increase their shareholder value have turned to us, the grievers. But it's not our money they want (or at least, not JUST our money) – it's our dead people. Their voices, their words, their likeness. They want to reanimate our people, just without their bodies and souls.  A few months ago, I read an incredible article in The Atlantic, titled The AI Companies Trying To Make Grief Obsolete. I knew it was something I NEEDED to talk about, and it just so happened that the author, Charley, was willing to talk to me and share the story of her big brother, Ben, who passed unexpectedly in 2014.  Grief is not a problem to be solved.
