Mary has written three young adult novels and has been published in The Atlantic, New York Times, and GQ. Her latest book, Yolk, is the story of two estranged sisters who slowly heal their relationship after one of them is diagnosed with cancer. For this summer, I really want to focus on art teachers and what they went through in the last year teaching through the pandemic. “We're not going to give up in-person gatherings, but at the same time, virtual tables have been so meaningful. Post-COVID probably will be a ‘both and’ community.” - Carla FernandezIn November, we hosted a live interview with Carla Fernandez and Mary Horn in front of an intimate audience. For both women, their work with The Dinner Party is personal.  “We know what it’s like to lose someone and we aren’t afraid to talk about it,” their website states.When COVID-19 arrived in March, Carla, Mary, and the team “frantically put together some programming.” They stood up a calendar of events, including yoga and journaling, that Dinner Parties could tune into from around the world. But when they turned to their community and asked, “what do you need more of?” the answer grounded them in their founding purpose. “They weren't as interested in these one-way teaching experiences,” Carla told us. “What they really wanted was connections and homies that they could talk to about what was going on in their life.” People can go to a yoga class any hour of the day, seven days a week. At the outset of COVID-19, there were a lot of organizations providing those spaces (thankfully!). What Dinner Partiers didn't have was someone that they could talk to about their grief. Since that realization, they have launched the Buddy Program, connected affinity groups, and added 70 new tables to their community.  In our live interview, we talked with them about finding an activity that was purposeful, participatory, and offered the peer support people come to The Dinner Party for. We have plans to host another live interview soon! Continuing our conversation with Indivisible 2020 participating artists, today’s guests Mary Sherwood Brock and Joshua Wattle engage in a stimulating discussion filled with passion for the country. Show curator Karen Fiorito joins the two artists, who both have roots in Washington and have been on the frontlines for their whole lives — Mary as an activist, and Joshua as a lawyer and lobbyist for the anti-war movement. We get into what indivisibility means to our guests, where they both express the aspirational notion of it. Mary Turner is a veteran of the Air Force who started her own business in the Medical Staffing Agency business in Houston, TX. She quickly grew to be the third largest agency in her area and was the envy of other small businesses. Except for the fact that her instant success and uncontrolled growth came with a heavy price tag. Unable to sustain the growth, Mary went back to nursing as a recruiter. She was hired to recruit nurses into the hospital system and out recruited seasoned HR recruiters 9 to 1. She then became the Director of Healthcare Recruitment, but she had the "itch" to do her own business. David and Mary Sherwin work with design teams in for-profit and nonprofit organizations via their consulting business, Ask The Sherwins, LLC. They’re also professors at the Pacific College of Art in the Design and Collaboration Program. Show Summary David's background is in engineering and liberal arts. He graduated with an English degree, but had a side hustle doing graphic design. That’s where he discovered an interest in design. Much of his early design learning and education was accomplished by apprenticing at various design studios Then, he shifted into product and service design, and he worked in product development for some large software organizations.  Mary started in organizational development and content strategy, and then moved into teaching within the design discipline. John 1:29 NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Revelation 5:1-5 NIV Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” The number 7 indicates totality and completeness. Only God Himself is worthy and has authority to be sovereign of His plans. Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. Revelation 5:6a. NIV 6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, John uses the word anion 28X’s in revelation. It means sheep, lamb or little lamb. The Lamb was slain at a point in time, but the efficacy of His death is still present in all it’s power. Hebrews 9:11-14 NIV 11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining[b] eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death,[c] so that we may serve the living God! Revelation 5:6b NIV standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits[a] of God sent out into all the earth. 7 Horns - totality of power 7 eyes/7 Spirits - fullness of God’s presence through the Spirit Revelation 5:7-8 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. Primary prayers for Jews - deliverance from bondage and restoration of the kingdom. Revelation 5:9a. NIV 9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, Through the cross the true purpose of God is revealed to us. Not just that Israel would be restored but that the whole of the created order would be restored. Psalm 8:4-8 NIV 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? 5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their[e] feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. At the cross, Jesus Christ took back dominion for humankind by destroying the power of sin and death. Christians are not waiting to go to heaven. Christians are waiting for heaven to come to us. Revelation 21:1-4 NIV 1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” ESV Study Bible - The earth will not always be tyrannized by satan and destroyed by his followers. The first heaven and earth, stained by the curse through human sin, will be replaced by a new heaven and earth in which Christ’s Saints will reign in righteousness. Revelation 5:9b NIV and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. Luke 2:10 NIV 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Genesis 12:1-3 NIV 1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Revelation 5:10 NIV 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.” In this new Kingdom we will have unfettered and uninhibited access to God and He will be with us forever. Revelation 5:11-12 NIV 11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” The Lamb here receives the same ascriptions of praise as well as other ascriptions normally reserved for God. If the Lamb is worthy of praise He must be God. The baby boy we celebrate the birth of at Christmas time is God incarnate. Bottom Line: Mary had a little lamb who is worthy of all praise because He is God! Where does worship of the Lamb rank in your life? Revelation 5:13 NIV 13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” Bottom Line: Mary had a little lamb who is worthy of all praise because He is God!!!

The Passover is about death passing over and release from slavery. Exodus 12:1-2 NIV 1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2 “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. Exodus 12:3-7 NIV 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. Exodus 12:8-9 NIV 8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs. Leaven was seen as a sign of impurity. It’s hidden, works silently, secretly spreads and gets bigger. Exodus 12:10-11 NIV 10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. Exodus 12:12-13 NIV 12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. The blood was a symbol that the people in the house had faith that God would save them. At the first Passover the lamb died so the first born of the house wouldn’t. Why did anyone/anything have to die for the Israelites to be saved? God’s holiness requires that he punish sin. The idea of a substitutionary sacrifice runs through the whole of scripture. Genesis 3:21 NIV 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. The sacrificial system we read about in the Old Testament is based on substitutionary sacrifice. 1 Corinthians 5:7 NIV 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Jesus Christ was the perfect Passover lamb. Why so much focus on the death of Jesus at Christmas time? Bottom Line: It wasn’t the life of the lamb that saved people from judgement, but the death of the lamb. -Warren Wiersbe We all start out in our own Egypt. Wherever sin is present a sacrifice is necessary. Jesus doesn’t just want to save you from the consequences of sin, he wants to release you from the power of sin. In the Passover and the exodus we so both salvation and sanctification.

She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. John 1:29 NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! The lamb of God theme runs throughout the whole of scripture. It starts in Genesis and goes through Revelation in one way or another. Genesis 22:1-2 NIV 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” Could you imagine being Abraham in this situation? Genesis 22:3 NIV 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. Genesis 22:4-5 NIV 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” We will come back. Genesis 22:6-7 NIV 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father? “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Where is the lamb? Genesis 22:8 NIV 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. vs.8 NASB Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. God has a lamb. God will provide that lamb. The lamb is as much for God as it is for us. Genesis 22:9 NIV 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. How did Abraham get Isaac on that wood? We have a son who carries wood on his back up a mountain. Then he lays down voluntarily on the wood to be the needed sacrifice. Sound familiar? Genesis 22:10 NIV 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. Genesis 22:11-12 NIV 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Isaac was as good as dead and now is quite alive. Genesis 22:13 NIV 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham said, God will provide a lamb. But, what he found was a ram. Luke 2:11-12 NIV 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Bottom Line: Jesus is the long awaited Lamb of God and that is good news for everyone. The Christmas story would not be good news if it were not for the death of Jesus.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so to start it off in stride we’re using this roundtable episode as an opportunity to speak with two hygienists who have had to live with breast cancer—and persevered.   Mary Jensen has worked as a registered dental hygienist for nearly four decades. She works with the HyLife Oral Health Alliance, providing older populations with oral health care. Kris Potts has worked in dental hygiene for over forty years. Just add water. Soy: Is it friend or foe? There are protective properties in soy like isoflavones. It also provides healthy fats, protein, and fiber. Tofu, edamame, tempeh, and soy milk are whole soy products, but beware of extra added ingredients like sugar. Caffeine: Know how it affects YOU. For some people, it can increase blood pressure, insomnia, and anxiety, but for others, it decreases headaches and boosts athletic performance, mood, and outlook. Don’t depend on caffeine to survive the day Kids are nervous enough already and many are sleep deprived, so be on the lookout for kids who consume caffeine. Mary recommends against it. Chocolate: It has beneficial compounds like flavanols, minerals, and even fiber! Go for the least processed forms and the highest percentage of cacao. Experiment with different flavor combos. Kombucha: This is a fermented tea beverage with a very small amount of sugar, bacteria, and yeast. It’s beneficial because of the good bacteria, but it can be expensive. “My greatest fear is letting fear get in my way.” —Mary Wittenberg Mary Wittenberg is the former president and CEO of New York Road Runners and race director of the New York City Marathon, and was the Global CEO of Virgin Sport. Her titles are impressive, and she has the legacy to match. Mary has had an incredible impact on running. Do you have a mantra that you live by each day? As creatives, we often gravitate towards specific sayings or guideposts. And in Mary’s case, she adopts her own. Mary Crowlie taught in a classroom for 20 years before changing paths and becoming the art teacher for 800 children in grades 1st-5th. This was her realization of nabbing her dream job. But it was more challenging than she expected. To keep her spirits and energy up, Mary adopted a mantra that she uses to both inspire, humor and keep her radiant outlook. Hello and welcome back! Here's hoping that you had a JOYFUL Easter and that you are still celebrating in earnest!  After all, we are an EASTER PEOPLE. I thought we would kick off this Easter Season with a podcast I have been meaning to record and send out into the world for a while now: WHY MARY. Here's why I wanted to do a podcast on Mary. The first few months of this year I have been talking about Mary A LOT. Through God's goodness I had a pretty special moment with Mary following a terrible tragedy, and that special moment has spurred me on to create a Rosary book and really try to increase Marian devotion to the Rosary. And it has been amazing to see Mary work!  So many people have written to me about becoming dedicated to their Rosary again, and I am amazed about how God can use even His lowliest servants. But, through it all, I have also gotten a few emails and comments similar to this one: "I'm a Catholic, and I love Mary, but should be really be praying to her instead of Jesus" And I completely get it--and used to feel the same uneasiness. Sometimes it feels like a deep spiritual relationship with Mary is in conflict with a relationship with Jesus (spoiler alert, it isn't). For many of us we think, yes, I was raised Catholic and it feels almost natural to go to Mary with my needs...but WHY MARY? Why bother with Mary when we can just go directly to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. This is an excellent question that I offer some thoughts on this in this episode. There is so so much to say on Marian devotion and prayer, and I don't even attempt to cover it all. Instead I touch on only two real points: Mary as the New Eve. Mary as the greatest disciple. I hope that listening helps you understand a little bit more about why God has seen it good and fitting that we take our needs to Mary and why He allows so much grace and goodness to flow through her. I DID NOT record this episode to address Protestant issues with Mary. Instead this episode is meant only to help practicing Catholics refine their Marian beliefs and understand better why we do what we do concerning our wonderful Blessed Mother. My guest today on Unclassified Woman is the fabulous Mary Reynolds, who is based in Ireland, one of my favourite places in the world. (I am 3/4 Irish so slightly biased!).  Mary lives and breathes her work as a landscape and garden designer, teaching others how to connect with the land beneath our feet and have a nurturing relationship with it. Her gorgeous book that is about much more than mere gardening. It's a call to action for all of us. The Garden Awakening highlights her role as “a guardian rather than a gardener.” She believes in cultivating a relationship with the land and working in harmony with Mother Nature. She views being a gardener/land owner as someone who is like a parent guiding a child. In creating vibrant and magical spaces, she displays her creative spirit where gardens are a partnership between sensitive souls and the earth that nurtures us. I highly recommend Dare to be Wild, a film inspired by a period in her life, when she became the youngest woman to win the gold medal at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. Mary Filiss is a painter and quilter living in Marshall, North Carolina.  She attended art school, Cooper Union College in NYC,  and upon graduation, Mary and her husband shared studio space in the same neighborhood as some of the rising stars of the period's art scene. Life happened, and after many adventures and years of raising children, Mary is finally returning to her art in her retirement years. I will let her tell her own story, though, as it is too good to spoil by giving you many of the details here! This is another one of the original interviews I conducted; in fact, this one was held purely as practice for me and not intended for release.  Mary is a close neighbor of mine, so one day in January 2016, when we were both stormed-in on the same hill, she agreed for me to come over and pass some of that snowy day by chatting about her art.  I learned an awful lot about my neighbor! Months later, I listened to the recording, realized how much I loved the interview, and sought Mary's permission to air it.  I was a little concerned about some of the more personal things Mary had revealed, though, so I brought the recording to her house and we listened together, to make sure she was ok to go live with her story.  Mary graciously agreed for me to release this interview.   Her only concern is, she isn't quite sure she fits in with the company of the other great artists who have been guests on the Local Hearted Podcast. I have no doubt that you will find Mary's story every bit as interesting as some of the more well-known artists I have talked with.  I know I did!  And it was mentioned, but I want to highlight, that Mary and her husband came to Madison County, NC to raise a family in 1973, living among neighbors whose roots in these mountains all went back many generations.   Mary's family lived a rugged farming life in the far reaches of the countryside, the type of lifestyle Tim Barnwell was researching and photographing (although he did not photograph her family). Mary Fons knew she wanted to be a writer from a young age, and was pursuing that path when a catastrophic illness nearly took her life, leading to surgery and changing her future forever.As she recovered and started to stitch her life back together, she began working with her mom, Maryann Fons, a legend in the world of quilting and author of what has become known as the "Quilter’s Bible."Simultaneously rebuilding her health while building her own name as a leading voice in the massive quilting world, she began speaking, writing books, designing textiles and producing media and appearing regularly on television with her mother.
