Continuing with our series on women in the literary arts, today's guest is Mary H.K. Choi, a Korean-American New York Times best-selling author. Mary has written three young adult novels and has been published in The Atlantic, New York Times, and GQ. Her latest book, Yolk, is the story of two estranged sisters who slowly heal their relationship after one of them is diagnosed with cancer. In our wide-ranging conversation today, we talk about Mary's journey to becoming a writer and some of the beliefs she had to let go of to get to where she is. We then dive into Yolk, where Mary talks about the similarities between her and one of the main characters, Jane. Mary unpacks why it was important for her to write about an eating disorder and having a fraught relationship with your body. Not only does this reflect Mary's personal experience, but it also comments on the broader pressures within east Asian communities regarding physical appearance. We also touch on intergenerational trauma and why Mary thinks it's an inevitable outcome of the immigrant experience, race, and the power of sibling hood as an immigrant. To hear all this and more, tune in today!• Hear what Mary was like as a little girl and her naturally inquisitive, scrappy nature. • When Mary realized that she wanted to be a writer and the pain that came with this realization. • The difficulty Mary faced trying to break into mainstream media. • For many years, Mary waited for permission, or for a break based on her merit. • A synopsis of Mary's latest book, Yolk, and the similarities between her and the main character, Jane. • The struggles Mary has had with eating disorders throughout her life. • Why it was so important for Mary to talk about bulimia in her book. • How Jane's low self-worth and insecurity reflect what happens to many women of color. • The different yolk signifiers and why Mary chose this as the name of the book. • Why Mary chose to explore sisterhood in Yolk, despite not having sisters herself. • Mary's fraught relationship with America and how she thinks about her identity. • Having a brother gave Mary someone to talk to about their unique immigrant experience. • Representations of East Asian men in the media and how this differs from representations of East Asian women. • How Mary chose to bring up the issue of race in a non-prescriptive way. • What Mary has learned from her characters about what it means to break free.ReferencesMary H.K. I Heart My Life Show

What does your decision-making process look like? Do you lean all the way into your intuition, or structure your points with rock-solid data? Turns out, the most successful CEOs find a balance of both—or invest in advisors who make the right call for them.  Whether you're still finding your feet in business or already scaling your way to 6 or 7 figures, strategic decision-making is a skill you've simply got to master. The sooner you do it, the easier it will be to steer your team in the right direction—and the quicker you'll get to your next goal.  I may be as heart-centered as they come, but there's no denying that things can slip through the cracks fast when you start losing sight of the facts. On the other hand, if you're spending all of your time chasing numbers and comparing your biz to your competition, you could soon find yourself chairing up a business you don't believe in. The sweet spot lies somewhere between thinking, feeling, learning, and executing—and today's guest has a knack for helping top CEOs find it.  I'm so thrilled to be joined by business advisor and international speaker Mary Dee in today's episode of the I Heart My Life Show. Mary has been helping CEOs and their executive suites make strategic decisions for over two decades, so if there's anyone in the world who knows how to scale and grow a business from the ground up, it's her! She's a prime example of how tapping into your natural talents can translate to a purpose-filled life.  It was such a joy and privilege to be in Mary's energy, and I know you will love listening to the lessons she shares in this episode. We talk about the top mistakes business owners make as they grow (both when they're first starting out AND scaling past 7 figures), the key metrics you should be paying attention to from day one, and the value of mentorship at every single level of business.  You'll also find out whether you are a coach or a team player type of CEO, and what that means about the people you should surround yourself with as you scale your business. Note-taking is highly advised! In This Episode:  Mary shares how she went from working as a hostess at a California seafood restaurant hostess to giving strategic advice to CEOs Why knowing what you're naturally good at will help you live out your purpose  What her serial entrepreneur clients struggle with most as they scale Finding the right balance between data-driven and intuitive thinking  The metrics that really speak volumes about a business Top mistakes business owners make as they grow Different types of CEO, and the people they need around them  The difference between intuitive and fear-based decisions  How Mary uses journaling as a decision-making practice The importance of matching up with a mentor at every level of business What really keeps businesses stuck at the 7 figure level Why a positive attitude to failure will get you far Quotes: “Once you get to seven figures, you're going to need to look a little higher up and say, okay, if my goal is to scale past this number, who else has gone past this number that I know understands how things change, how things scale, how things grow, and what new problems might I end up running up against? We're outgrowing a first set of pants. We have to go get new pants.” - Mary Dee “If there's anything I've learned, it's to keep trying something long enough. You're going to get good at it. And if you don't get good at it, you're going to get good at something.” - Mary Dee  “Even if a business finds you, it's important to understand what you are actually building. Are you building a lifestyle business or are you building a business that you're trying to take public and sell? Are you trying to serve a lot of people? Are you trying to serve just one person? There are so many details wrapped up in that.” - Mary Dee “Find the person you resonate with, the person who has what you want. Latch onto that person, because they will really help shortcut some things for you. And you will not have as bumpy of a learning curve that a lot of people do when they don't ask for help. They kind of flounder around in secret, taking courses and trying to do some stuff in the background without ever leaning in. Instead, raise your hand, say I'm vulnerable and I'm coachable and I'm ready to show up. I believe the universe delivers when we do that.” - Mary Dee Links & Resources: Follow the I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/i-heart-my-life-show/id1569047758  Subscribe to the I Heart My Life Show on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1Zw6fI37FrfVjZMXlMiZZ6 Connect with Mary:  Visit Her Website https://www.marydee.net/  Mary on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/themarydee/?hl=en  Connect with Emily: I Heart My Life Website https://www.iheartmylife.com/ I Heart My Life on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/iheartmylife/ I Heart My Life on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/iheartmylifenow I Heart My Life on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/i-heart-my-life/ https://www.iheartmylife.com/join Join the IHML community to receive exclusive announcements and tips. What is it that catches your eye when you are determining what to paint? Do you look for color that speaks to you, are you drawn to certain subjects or locations? Growing up in Australia, Mary Tonkin quickly became enamored with, “The bush” - a term mostly used in the English vernacular of Australia and New Zealand where it is largely synonymous with backwoods or hinterland, referring to a natural undeveloped area. Mary completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995 and a Master of Fine Arts in 2002 at Monash University, where she has also lectured. Tonkin has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney since 1999. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, and internationally in New York.  It was my privilege to host Mary for a live session of our interview. It was a joy to have Mary open up about her process, what she sees when she’s out here in the bush, how she juggles life as a working mother, and so much more. I can’t wait for you to get to know Mary’s engaging story!  Brining the bush to life  When you speak with Mary, you get a quick impression that she means business when she talks about slowing down and paying attention. For Mary, phrases like stillness, being present, and “taking in” a place, aren't' strangers - they are well-known companions on her journey. While it may be challenging to have a living and constantly changing subject like the Australian bush, Mary says that the experience has been well worth it. What stands out to you when you observe Mary’s artwork? Make sure to catch images of her paintings located at the end of this post.  Learning to adapt  Working in the wilderness in many ways can prepare you for challenging situations you face later in life. Learning to prepare for variables that you can’t control is a helpful training ground for parents. Mary was kind enough to open up about her experience as a working mother trying to navigate her time in the wilderness with her responsibilities at home. At the end of the day, it all comes down to quality over quantity for Mary, she is grateful for the time in the bush that she can reserve.  Feeding your curiosity  I loved hearing from Mary about her own journey with compartmentalizing her painting life for both the good and bad, I know so many artists just like her! One big takeaway from my conversation with Mary comes down to the value of feeding your curiosity. Some of us love to explore our curiosity over conversations with friends, while others need time in solitude. What works best for you? How do you feed your curiosity and let it fuel your creativity? I want to hear from you!  Outline of This Episode [2:00] I welcome my guest, Mary Tonkin.  [3:15] How Mary got started as an artist.  [6:15] Mary describes her artwork.  [10:45] How does Mary manage the seeming complexity in her paintings?  [16:00] Mary opens up about how wildfires and COVID-19 have impacted her work. Since the day you fell in love and married, you carried a dream in your heart. More than anything you want to build a Christian home full of faith and the goodness of God. Yet like so many couples, you have no blueprints from your past to guide your way. God’s truth and his ways were painfully absent from your upbringing. You feel scared and insecure about how to put Christ in the center of your home and love each other like Jesus. Today's guest, Mary DeMuth, knows what it’s like to build a loving, godly home out of the ashes of the past. She offers hope as she helps us to understand:   How Mary’s traumatic childhood motivated her to create a new vision for her family life. The struggles “pioneer parents” face as first-generation Christians in their families. The pitfalls of perfectionism in our marriage and parenting. Why pursuing your own healing is the best gift you can give your family. The power of forgiveness to change your life and home. The value of mentors and examples to follow. How to set healthy boundaries so you can “leave and cleave” and support one another. How God’s kindness and prayer make all the difference. Mary DeMuth is an author, artist, literary agent, and the host of the popular podcast, Pray Every Day. She and her husband, Patrick, are the parents of three adult children and make their home in Texas. Mary’s passion is to give you hope through her story: “Not only have I been re-stored and restoried, but I long to see the same for you. You no longer have to live haunted. I believe your new story starts today. It’s time to heal, be set free, and find the new story God has for us. Or you've gone through three cases this week, and it's not even Friday. Alcohol is a helluva drug, and millions of people suffer from addiction, so to say alcoholism is funny feels like the slap in the face you got at the bar from the girl you were trying to take home while you were blacked out. But it is, and Mary Santora is proof of that. Sometimes, you've got to be able to laugh about the thing that's destroying your life, and sharing that laugh may be able to help someone else. Mary joins us in this episode to prove that you can laugh at being an alcoholic.  We also talk about: -How Mary got her start in comedy. -The addictiveness of performing stand-up. -When Mary came to terms with her alcoholism. -David's tool for avoiding drinking too much: his evil, drunk alter ego, City Dave. -Mary's bit on her sober quarantine experience. -How she relates her sobriety from the stage to a room full of people drinking. -The parallels of alcohol dependency and the dependency of being a kid. -Those fateful last words, "I'll just have one..." -Having an addictive personality. -How David replaced cocaine with comedy. -Mary's sage advice for less experienced comedians. -Being drunk onstage. -Writing drunk. -Alcohol being the REAL gateway drug. -The intervention that never was. -Mitch Hedberg's joke about alcoholism. -The classification of alcoholism as a disease and our misunderstanding of many mental disorders. -Mary's surprising comedic influences. -Comedians who've gotten sober and seen their success skyrocket. -The importance of starting from a place of honesty, both when performing comedy AND getting sober. -And more! Growing up in a white family in the ’50s can sometimes lead to confusion about race, especially when racial discrimination was at its peak. How does color matter if everyone is the same- everyone is human. Black people aren’t supposed to be treated as downcasts in our society. And because of these discriminations in the ‘50s, children who are now adults end up in confusion as to why black people didn’t matter before when in the end, we were all human.    “Our relationship faded, but not really. Even though I did not see her. My memory of her is still deep in my heart. She helped me to always feel loved even if I had disappeared for hours riding my bike and caused her to worry. She always forgave me. This is one of my experiences.”    - Mary Sue Rabe    Growing up in the segregated south in the ‘50s has led little Mary into confusion as to why Black people weren’t treated equally as White people. How does it make sense to a child that the loving Black caregiver was not treated rightly by society and even her family?  In this episode, Mary Sue shares her own experience of confusion on how the people who loved her most were not treated equally. She also gives tribute to one of the caregivers who loved her the most, a loving Black woman named Bee.      What you will learn from this episode:    Learn how racial discrimination back in the ‘50s had an effect on a child’s point of view on the different races and how it can cause possible confusion    Discover the innocence of a child towards the unequal treatment of White people to Black people in the 1950’s    Find out how Black people were treated in the ‘50s, specifically in the segregated south area in Texas      Link to a Free Resource:    Stand There and Look Pretty Darlin’ by Mary Sue Rabe    Topics Covered:    00:58 - Mary shares how she discovered her father was a “plantation owner”, a job in which she was ashamed  01:21 - How Mary realized that their farm is a plantation wherein Black people work in  03:00 - How a loving black woman changed Mary’s life: the story of Bee  04:20 - Mary explained what Bee does around the house and when taking care of the children  08:28 - Mary tells about their cabin in Camp Creek  09:19 - Mary shares her experience in fishing with Bee and some of the sweet moments she had with Bee   12:10 - How fear came about at Bee when she couldn’t find little Mary Sue  13:39 - Mary shares the sad news about Bee’s death back when she was a junior in college  14:47 - Different races, same sweet memories: how Bee changed Mary Sue’s life and the memories kept within her heart    Key Takeaways:    “As a child, I witnessed that the people who cared for me and that I was very fond of, were not treated as equals. The situation has caused me much confusion about race.” - Mary Sue Rabe    “Her earrings were broom straws placed in the holes in her ears to keep them open. When our family went on a trip in 1960 we bought her some souvenir red ball stud earrings, which took the place of the straw. I don't know why it took us so long to get her some earrings.” - Mary Sue Rabe    “Considering I played with dolls so much, Bee decided to make a quilt for my baby dolls. Since the quilt was small, so were the strips of cloth that were used to make it. I still wonder how she did the sewing such small stitches with her bent, naughty, arthritic fingers. I still have this doll quilt.” - Mary Sue Rabe    “As my father employed a permanent housekeeper to live with us, Bee was no longer needed on weekends or so my dad thought, but I still needed her. I needed the stability of Bee on Saturday nights. My dad and I did not communicate about what I needed. And he was unaware of how important and how deeply connected I was to Bee. Not being with her on Saturdays was another loss for me.” - Mary Sue Rabe    Connect with Mary Sue Rabe:  https://marysuerabe.com  https://womenhealingtheworld.com  Book: Stand There and Look Pretty Darlin'

Joining me today on the podcast to discuss all about DNA testing and those choices that come with it is Mary Eberle. David and Mary Sherwin work with design teams in for-profit and nonprofit organizations via their consulting business, Ask The Sherwins, LLC. They’re also professors at the Pacific College of Art in the Design and Collaboration Program. In this episode, we go deep into designing teams, consider more effective ways to teach design and teams, and ways to make teams work when working remotely with Dawan Stanford, your podcast host. Show Summary David's background is in engineering and liberal arts. He graduated with an English degree, but had a side hustle doing graphic design. That’s where he discovered an interest in design. Much of his early design learning and education was accomplished by apprenticing at various design studios Then, he shifted into product and service design, and he worked in product development for some large software organizations.  Mary started in organizational development and content strategy, and then moved into teaching within the design discipline. Much of Mary's experience had been working with designers. Most of David's experience was from a designer's standpoint, working with people like Mary. Mary and David realized that the work they were doing on their respective paths had a lot of synergy and that they each held half of the solution. They started teaching together seven years ago. Three years after that, they founded their company after students in a special graduate-level teamwork class told them they should start their own business, because this was something companies wanted their employees to learn.  Since starting  Ask The Sherwins, Mary and David have discovered and developed the nuances of developing strong, well-functioning teams. From facilitating your new team at the start of the design process, to what to do when your team feels like it's falling apart, to working through cultural differences, Mary and David have robust processes for all of these team challenges. They discuss their management style, team-building exercises, and team maintenance practices on team design. Listen in to learn Why Mary and David’s ability to “professionally disagree” gives them an advantage when working with design clients Why their two different career paths gives two different perspectives on the design process About cultural biases, assumptions, and their role in design solutions Why Mary and David encourage students and professors to teach and learn from each other Advice on how to start your team Mary and David’s team facilitation process during their first meeting Team word tools to use when the team situation gets difficult When you should use behavioral questioning Our Guests’ Bio David and Mary Sherwin are co-founders of Ask The Sherwins, LLC, a consulting and training firm that helps design organizations develop the capabilities they need for better product design and stronger cross-functional teamwork. They have recently coached product and service design teams and provided training around innovation best practices for organizations such as Philips Oral Healthcare, Tipping Point Community, The Purpose Project, Google UX Community and Culture, and Eventbrite. The Sherwins are also active in the design education space. They lead workshops in the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design’s Summer School and currently teach in the MFA in Collaborative Design program at PNCA. In their spare time, David and Mary have collaborated on three books, including their most recent, Turning People Into Teams.   Show Highlights  [02:15] Mary and David talk about their origin story and how they arrived where they are now in design.  [04:26] How Mary’s experience in teaching played out in her design experience. [07:48] Components of a team from Mary and David’s perspective.  [10:08] Prototyping for norms, teams and individual thinking. [11:08] Advice for starting a team off well. On this episode of Talk Bravely, I chat with long time political advocate Mary McClelland about what exactly a career in campaigns and advocacy means, how she’s spent two decades doing good for our democracy, why it’s important to set work boundaries when the stakes always feel so high, and why some of us (me!) just can’t seem to ignore the negative voice inside our head that elevates our confidence issues.  Mary’s stories of working on campaigns, elections, and advocating for good public policy across the country are inspiring. Early in her career she worked to improve our country and political elections by advocating for better campaign finance laws, and then went on to work with Rock the Vote registering millions of young people to vote for the first time. Mary recently worked on large scale education equity issues, and currently serves as Director of Communications for the Environmental Law and Policy Center. What we’re talking about: How growing up in a civically-minded home with a focus on being involved in the community influenced her career. What does a political advocate actually do as a career? Educate, activate, petition, organize. Money matters in campaigns and elections - and political advocates can make a difference to even this imbalance out. How Mary lived her early years on a nonprofit budget, and learned a lot on the job her first year. Politics is local. We don’t have to work in DC to make a difference as advocates. But Mary went to DC, young, without a job, and with the benefit of a friend’s kindness (and couch). How Mary has worked on large scale political advocacy from environment, to voting, to campaign finance reform, and education. The myriad of jobs in the political advocacy sector are broad - tech, marketing, programming, curriculum development, learning and training, legal, business development, communications, fundraising, etc., and yes, women can make a difference AND make a strong salary in the field. Yet if you don’t have boundaries around time at work, advocacy and politics can be a 24-7 job because the stakes feel very high at all times. How Mary has had to work really hard to counteract her sense of loyalty, and sometimes her confidence gap, that has kept her in jobs a bit longer than she probably should have. Mary considers herself a saver - mostly - and when she was ready to buy a home as a single woman in Chicago, found the lack of information, confusing acronyms, and non-linear process a barrier. And frankly the process is scary and mysterious for so many first time buyers. What’s in the future for Mary? She doesn’t know, but she knows she’ll stay in political advocacy work. It is what she does, and it is what she is passionate about.  Connect with Mary: On LinkedIn

She's also a single mother to a 9-year-old diva.  During this moment we are all living through, Mary is a journalist looking at how people are getting by during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mary has been following the COVID-19 pandemic very closely and was very much ahead of the curve when it comes to knowing what was going to happen in the United States. She is the most educated person I have spoken to personally about what’s happening. I have seen so much misinformation online. In this episode, I was able to ask Mary some questions that I’ve been really grappling with regarding the coronavirus, our response to it, and what we should do next.  Obviously, neither one of us are medical experts or scientists, so please visit CDC.gov for the latest. “The-birds-and-the-bees” — We all know the term, but not all of us got an opportunity to have that conversation. Maybe we talked to a friend. A cousin. A sibling. Some may have even had the stereotypical talk — the one where you sit and wince through an awkward lecture WITH your parent(s). Whatever the case, we seem to never revisit it, if there even was a conversation to revisit. Today, Ellen sits down with Mary, her mother, to revisit that conversation. They’ll talk about: How Mary was taught sex-ed How Mary was taught about her menstrual cycle How sex was discussed in school, among peers, and at home What Mary would have done differently in Ellen’s sexual education  Ellen Melon Social Media links: https://www.instagram.com/ellenmelonshow/ https://twitter.com/EllenMelonShow https://www.facebook.com/ellenmelonshow www.ellenmelon.com

Our monthly student roundtable discussion episodes are dedicated to help you navigate the at-times turbulent waters from graduation to internship to full employment in the hygienist industry. This month, we’ve invited on two hygienists who regularly go on mission trips to bring dental care to the less fortunate throughout the world. Mary Jensen (previously heard in ATOTH 78) works as a dental hygienist for HyLyfe, LLC in the Greater Chicago Area and is Alliance for Smiles’ lead hygienist, mentoring the dental professionals and students who go on these mission trips. Dorothy Ferreira has been practising dental hygiene for over three decades and is a volunteer hygienist for Alliance for Smiles and has 17 mission trips under her belt, with her 18th coming up this fall.  In this episode, Mary and Dorothy discuss their personal histories with charitable dentistry, explain how to best go about funding and preparing for these mission trips, and relate some of their favorite experiences.   EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: 3:07 - How Mary and Dorothy got involved in mission trip work and why Mary views dental hygiene techniques as “portable.” - How dental hygienists on mission trips overcome the language barrier, and the touching bonds they form in the process. - Our guests’ tips for vetting the different organizations that offer mission trip opportunities. - Why time zone can be a major factor in how well one may adjust to a mission trip. - The reason a little bit of dental hygiene education can go a long way in more remote communities. - What Dorothy and Mary think you should be sure to pack for a mission trip, and other helpful preparation tips. - How you can go about securing funding for your mission trips.   QUOTES: “It’s life-changing for the child, but it’s life-changing for the volunteer as well.” “Speaking to someone firsthand, I think, is way better than just looking at their website.” “This individual has never been in the dental chair... You have to show, tell, do every step of the way.” “In this day and age, people want to feel that they’re going somewhere where there’s care.”   “When I’m on a mission, I’m an ambassador for the organization, I’m an ambassador for the United States and I’m an ambassador for the dental hygienists of the world.”   LINKS: Mary’s email: maryjensenrdh@gmail.com Dorothy’s email: dorothyferreirardh@gmail.com    Thank you to Paradise Dental Technologies aka PDT for providing sponsorship for this episode!
