In the early morning hours of June 13, 1977, after a thunderstorm had rolled through, young girls at a Girl Scout Camp in Northeast Oklahoma heard terrifying noises throughout the dark, dark night. A counselor had investigated what sounded like guttural moaning sounds at 1:30 AM. One girl heard a scream. Another, perhaps someone crying for their mom. Austin, Texas, 1884. A city that was on the very edge of modernity. A town that had grown by almost 5x in population in twenty years. Some were calling Austin the Athens of the West. On October 16, 2000, a grieving daughter, Marilyn Blalock, called the coroner's office. Her mother, Mary Lou Henderson Morris, who had been murdered four days before. The scent of sage clung in the air as Saguache (suh-WATCH) county police officers entered the Moffat, Colorado, house of Miguel Lamboy on April 28, 2021. It didn't take them long to discover what they had been sent for. She is seated in what appears to be a room that opens up to a vast landscape behind her, receding into icy mountains. Her gaze is fixed slightly to her left, but still manages to focus on the observer, and to follow one as they move around the room. She appears unusually alive. And her smile. Italian painter Giorgio Vasari would say, “In this work of Leonardo, there was a smile so pleasing that it was more divine than human.” The mystery in the smile leaves us wondering what she's thinking. We may never know, but one thing we know for sure: the already famous painting became the most famous piece of art in the world, at least maybe in part because it was stolen from its home at the Louve in 1911. In the United States, indigenous women are the ethnic group that is most at risk to be stalked, raped and murdered. And often, these crimes are not prosecuted or even investigated. No arrests.
