Most of the main branches of the Restoration were formed within roughly two decades of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. One clear exception, however, is the Mormon Fundamentalist movement. Here's a little backstory: In 1890 President Wilford Woodruff issued a manifesto announcing the Church's intention to submit to those laws recently passed and declared constitutional by the US Supreme Court forbidding plural marriage. Then in 1904, as a result of the Reed Smoot hearings before the US Senate and the national attention this brought to the continued practice of plural marriage in Utah, President Joseph F. Smith issued what is known as the “Second Manifesto,” which announced the Church's policy to excommunicate anyone who continued to enter into new polygamous marriages.  Yet some Church members felt that the manifestos of Presidents Woodruff and Smith were not inspired. Instead, they saw them as weak and uninspired capitulations to government demands rather than a continued courageous commitment to God's commands in the face of persecution. Within a few decades, those who dissented against these manifestos or were excommunicated from the LDS Church for entering into additional plural marriages began to gather on the Utah/Arizona border at a place known as Short Creek. They believed in a 1912 statement by Lorin C. Woolley, who had been courier for President John Taylor, about an unpublished 1886 revelation of President Taylor wherein the Lord declared that the “New and Everlasting Covenant” had not been revoked, nor would it ever be. This was interpreted by those in this group to mean that plural marriage would never be withdrawn. They concluded therefore that President Taylor's unpublished revelation (and their interpretation of it) overruled and superceded the first manifesto of President Woodruff in 1890 and the second manifesto of President Smith in 1904. They were staying true to this core fundamental element of Mormonism while the LDS Church was not.   In time these Mormon Fundamentalists fragmented into various groups, including the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or FLDS Church), the Apostolic United Brethren (or AUB), the Righteous Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days, among others.  In this episode of Church History Matters, Casey and I sit down with Dr. Brian Hales, an expert researcher and author of several books on the Mormon fundamentalist movement, to discuss this fascinating branch of the Restoration.  For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

**TW:  CSA, Suicide, threats of murder** Born into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS/Mormon), Briell was groomed at a very early age to one day become a plural wife to the prophet Warren Jeffs. Her parents wept when they found out the prophet's plans, but had no choice but to give her, at 18, to the over 50 year old man as his 65th wife. When Briell saw what Warren was doing with his 12 year old wives in Texas, she was mortified and resisted Warren's attention to which she would be severely punished for. This week I speak with Briell Decker about growing up in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS). A world of polygamy and total allegiance to the leader, Warren Jeffs. We talk about her childhood and at 18 years old being chosen by this leader who was 50 years old to be his 65th wife. We talk about that time and eventually escaping it all. It became and amazing full circle moment when Warren Jeffs went to prison (where he is currently serving a life sentence) she was awarded his 40 bedroom mansion where she made it a recovery center for others escaping polygamy. This is an amazing conversation._____________________________________Briell's Website: https://www.brielldecker.com/Dream Center Website: https://www.shortcreekdreamcenter.org/_____________________________________Link to all things Not in a Huff Podcast: https://linktr.ee/notinahuffpodcastPlease follow/subscribe to the podcast to be the first to see new episodes when they come out each week. According to Warren Jeffs' thousands of followers, he was the leader of a secretive but devoted religion – their prophet, and the representative of God on Earth. But according to US law, he was a dangerous, totalitarian, child-molesting horror with over 80 wives – some married off as young as 12. Still, according to the church, Earthly laws are no match for the voice of God.In this episode, we explore the story behind the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: how the visions of a charismatic, seventeen-year-old farmhand grew to become a major world religion; how plural marriage caused a major rift in the church; and how its teachings were warped into a systematic cult of child abuse, underage sex, and absolute power.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

You may have heard of Scientology, known for its Hollywood adherents and secretive practices, or the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), recognized for its controversial polygamous practices. Yet, these are just two examples within an expansive landscape of extraordinary belief systems. Our focus, however, eventually narrows to the Word of Faith Fellowship, a church in North Carolina led by Jane Whaley, which stands accused of severe misconduct and abuse. It is essential to note that Word of Faith Fellowship fervently denies all allegations brought against them. In a distressing turn of events, three children from former FLDS member Lorraine Jessop's family disappeared under suspicious circumstances on February 4, 2023. Despite theories of the children running away, Jessop and other mothers from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with similar experiences, suspect a more troubling scenario. They fear that someone from the church, or following its instructions, may have abducted their children. The mothers, experts, and FLDS scholars are particularly alarmed by the imprisoned prophet Warren Jeffs' recent prophecies, which include a call for children of ex-members to return to the church and predictions of a mass demise like the Jonestown tragedy. Today we're joined by Jinger Duggar Vuolo, author of "Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith from Fear," and formerly of the "19 Kids and Counting" franchise. In her new book, Jinger shares her theological journey from following a fundamentalist leader to finding freedom in Christ. We discuss her upbringing under the teachings of Bill Gothard, who taught strict rules on modesty and behavior, and how these teachings were rooted in fear, superstition, and control and led Jinger to believe she needed to earn favor with God. We discuss her childhood growing up on TV (despite never watching TV), struggling with an eating disorder, and wrestling with the idea of attending a church outside her doctrine growing up. We discuss how Jinger met her husband, Jeremy, and how his theology helped shape hers. Jinger explains the difference between “deconstruction” and “disentangling” faith and why disentangling can lead to true restoration under biblical truth. --- Timecodes: (01:09) Interview with Jinger begins / "Becoming Free Indeed" (02:00) Bill Gothard's teaching (08:58) Growing up on TV (14:50) Struggling with fear (19:30) Struggling with an eating disorder (22:00) Parental authority & gaining favor with God (27:30) Letting go of old theology (40:20) Deconstruction vs. disentanglement --- Today's Sponsors: A'Del — go to adelnaturalcosmetics.com and enter promo code "ALLIE" for 25% off your first order! Make sure to give it a listen before diving in here.  Many people became aware of the horrors taking place within the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (if you were really in touch with God s/he'd have given you a better name) after watching Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey on Netflix. Our guest on today's show, Elissa Wall, had to live through them.  Born into a polygamous family within Salt Lake City, Utah's FLDS—which is how we'll be referring to it from here on out— Wall was only 14 when church leaders orchestrated a marriage between the child and her 19-year-old cousin, Allen Steed. Unfortunately, such marriages were insanely frequent within the church, with girls as young as 12-years-old being groomed and forced to marry older men. Much of this is thanks to human trash can Warren Jeffs, president and prophet of the FLDS, who can also add convicted child rapist to his list of titles. At one point, Jeffs had 78 “wives,” 24 of whom were children. Now, he's serving life in prison, with no small help from Elissa Wall.  Wall's autobiography is titled, Stolen Innocence: My Story of Growing Up in a Polygamous Sect, Becoming a Teenage Bride, and Breaking Free of Warren Jeffs. The book became a New York Times bestseller and is a fascinating but heart wrenching look into the truly fucked up world of Warren Jeffs.  Also… Hear Ye, Hear Ye: The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. A 46-year-old man is accused of transporting minor girls in an enclosed trailer and tampering with evidence after he allegedly split from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to form his own small polygamous organization. According to court documents obtained by The Associated Press, someone allegedly saw fingers in a crack in a trailer's rear door in late August. Three females, ages 11 to 14, were reportedly located during a check of the trailer by authorities. The Associated Press states that Samuel Bateman was operating the trailer. There was supposedly a homemade toilet, a couch, several camping chairs, and no air conditioning or ventilation in the trailer. As a result, Bateman was reportedly taken into custody. The girls' relationship to Bateman was not addressed in the court papers. Reports indicate that Bateman "destroyed or attempted to destroy data, by deleting or aiding and abetting others to erase, electronic communications related with Signal accounts," as stated in a press statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona. Some say that Signal is a secure communications app. Earlier this week, Bateman reportedly entered a not guilty plea to the allegations, following his not guilty plea last year to three counts of child abuse in an Arizona state court. According to reports, while incarcerated, Bateman instructed his followers in Colorado City, Arizona to erase any electronic correspondence and encouraged the females to apply for passports. The Colorado City residence of Bateman's family was apparently raided by the state's child welfare agency and their children removed Bateman, who was released on bond and then re-arrested earlier this week, was reportedly a target of The Associated Press. As of Thursday, September 15th, the U.S. Attorney's Office stated that Bateman interfered with and destroyed evidence in an effort to "obstruct, influence, and impede" the federal court inquiry. There have been reports that a federal grand jury handed down an indictment on September 6. U.S. Attorney's Office stated that Bateman was charged with three counts of obstructing justice by destroying evidence, destroying evidence in a federal investigation, and tampering with evidence in a federal investigation. The United States Attorney's Office has stated that the maximum sentence for each offence is 20 years in prison if found guilty. Bateman reportedly used to be a disciple of Warren Jeffs, but Jeffs publicly disavowed him in a letter to his other followers written from prison, as reported by The Associated Press. Bateman's new movement probably has less than a hundred adherents. According to the AP, polygamy was taught by the early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Reportedly, though, the church now has outlawed such behavior. Bateman, a pilot and survivalist with a devoted following and worldwide connections who might be able to help him financially, will remain in jail while the matter makes its way through the courts, according to the Associated Press.
