The murder of Julia Martha Thomas, also known as the Barnes Mystery or the Richmond Murder, was one of the most infamous crimes of 19th-century Britain. Julia was murdered by her servant Kate Webster, who dismembered her remains and impersonated her for two weeks before fleeing the country. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Kate Webster. Kate was 30 years old when she murdered her employer. But it's the way that the murder occurred and what Kate did afterwards that shocks so many people about this case. There is also a possible theory that Kate planned this out before she even took the job.You can help support the show at patreon.com/truecrimeallthetimeVisit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation informationAn Emash Digital productionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In early March 1879, fifty-five-year-old widow Julia Martha Thomas disappeared from her home in southwest London. Julia often travelled by herself on moment's notice, so neighbors thought nothing of her absence; however, when several female body parts were discovered in the Thames, police uncovered a gruesome crime that not only involved theft and impersonation, but also the ghastly murder of Julia Martha Thomas.Thomas's maid, Kate Webster, was quickly arrested and charged with Julia's murder. Through their investigation, detectives discovered that Thomas had recently given Webster notice of termination after only one month. Days before she was to leave Thomas' home, Webster murdered her employer, then dismembered her body and posed as Julia in order to sell off the murdered woman's belongings for a quick profit. Although she maintained her innocence, Kate Webster was tried, convicted, and executed for the crime, finally confessing her guilt just hours before she went to the gallows. The ”Richmond Murder,” as it was dubbed by the press, captivated Londoners for months and Webster's trial and execution became something of a public spectacle. In Victorian-era England, few people believed a woman capable of committing murder, much less dismemberment and rendering of a human body. Given that, and the shocking viciousness of the crime itself, the Richmond Murder remains one of London's most notorious murders of the late nineteenth century.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBirmingham Evening Mail. 1879. Spooky Season Express Lane-Jen talks about the Hinterkaifeck Murders that occurred in Germany in 1922. The Gruber family, consisting of Andreas and Cäzilia Gruber, their daughter Viktoria, Viktoria's children Cäzilia and Josef, and the maid Maria Baumgartner, lived on a remote farm in Hinterkaifeck. The Hinterkaifeck Murders remain a famous unsolved case in Germany's criminal history. The farm was demolished in 1923, but the memory of the crime persists, and it has inspired numerous books, articles, and documentaries.Kim delves into another older crime, The Kate Webster murder. It is a historical murder case that took place in London in 1879. Kate Webster, an Irish domestic servant, was at the center of this crime. Kate Webster murdered her employer, Julia Martha Thomas, a widow. The murder occurred in Thomas's home in Richmond, a suburb of London. // Quellen & Shownotes // - The proceedings of the Old Bayley, London's Central Criminal Court 1674 – 1913, Catherine Webster, 30. Catherine “Kate” Lawler was born in Killanne, Ireland, into a very poor family. She learned to steal at a very early age, and eventually served time in prison as early as age 15. After accumulating numerous arrests throughout her early life Kate eventually left for Liverpool, England, where she began working for Julia Martha Thomas as a maid. Unfortunately, the two women did not see eye to eye much of the time. We know criminals don't change their ways, and on on March 22, 1879, after she sat for a few rounds of drinks at the local pub, Kate returned to Julia's house, waited for her to return from church, then attacked her. What comes next is unimaginable.Listen to new episodes every Thursday wherever you get your podcasts! This episode sounds better without shitty ads: [ https://patreon.com/TalkMurder ] (WE CAN'T CONTROL ADS, WE HATE THEM TOO!)The murder of Julia Martha Thomas, dubbed the "Barnes Mystery" or the "Richmond Murder" by the press, was one of the most notorious crimes in the Victorian period of the United Kingdom. Thomas, a widow in her 50s who lived in Richmond, London, was murdered on 2 March 1879 by her maid Kate Webster, a 30-year-old Irishwoman with a history of theft. Webster disposed of the body by dismembering it, boiling the flesh off the bones, and throwing most of the remains into the River Thames.
Julia Martha Thomas gets more than she bargained for when she unknowingly hires criminal Kate Webster to help her around the house. Many disputes later, Webster gets fired—but she refuses to accept it. Instead, she murders Julia Martha Thomas and chucks her her into the river before taking over her identity. It doesn't end well.

I know you're all here for a good Victorian murder story, but buckle up for this one folks, it is not for the faint of heart. The subject of tonight's story is sometimes referred to as “the female Sweeny Todd.” If you don't know, Sweeny Todd is a famous fictional character who first appeared in 1846 in penny dreadful publications. The character was a barber that would slit the throats of his clients, so his partner in crime could bake their bodies into pies and sell them to the unexpecting public. But that is fiction! Tonight's story is rooted in real events. Today, I'm delighted to be joined on The Egg Whisperer Show by Marc Sherman of Organic Conceptions, a company he founded after a 20-year career in corporate America. The idea came after he and his wife Erin struggled with infertility, decided to adopt, and then unexpectedly found themselves pregnant. Realizing that this phenomenon occurs regularly, they decided to conduct the first-ever research project to better understand the insights, patterns, and commonalities from similar stories. They partnered with Ph.D. Kate Webster and conducted a multi-year study that uncovered 9 key emotional transitions that were common across these stories, and that are required for conception. Their program, The Journey to Parenthood & Beyond, helps couples identify, name, address, and overcome the suffering involved when struggling to conceive, resulting in healthier patients and better outcomes. Put on your bustle and prepare the horse-drawn prison van because we're doing the time warp back to the Victorian era to learn about Kate Webster and what she's got cooking. Prepare your iron stomachs and your torso-sized pots, because this episode is all meat saws and republican pelicans. We learn the secret to no hangovers and what ingredients make the best drippings, but none of that compares to what we discovered people are currently selling in jars. Today we cover a case that was still making headlines as recently as 2011. This one was crazy, and really gruesome, so it's going to be labeled explicit. Sources: wikipediamylondon.newsvalmcbeath.com
The 2010 discovery of a skull in broadcaster David Attenborough's backyard finally closed a 130-year-old case that enraged Victorian London. When a box of boiled and mutilated human remains washed up on the bank of the Thames in southwest London in 1879, no one could have imagined who was responsible for the heinous act. When police finally arrested the Barnes Mystery murderer, Victorian Britain became disgusted and enraged, but mostly terrified. How well does anyone really know the people they allow into the safety of their home? Sources:"The Jury of Matrons." Welcome to The Sports Docs Podcast with Dr. Ashley Bassett and Dr. Catherine Logan. On each episode we chat about the most recent developments in sports medicine and dissect through all the noise so you know which literature should actually impact your practice. On today's episode we're focusing on return to play after various orthopedic injuries: what factors influence the timing of return, what criteria are used to determine clearance and how this all differs between sports. We're joined today by Dr. Robin West, Chairman of Inova Sports Medicine and head team physician for the Washington Nationals. Dr. West also has 18 years of experience in the National Football League, serving as a physician for both the Pittsburgh Steelers followed by the Washington Football Team. So we're excited to hear her take on this topic of return to play, especially given her experience across a multitude of elite sports. We have some great articles for you today that contribute well to our conversation on returning to sport after musculoskeletal injury. As always, links to all the articles we discuss on this show can be found on our podcast website. The first paper is a systematic review from the May 2019 issue of OJSM titled How Much Do Psychological Factors Affect Lack of Return to Play After ACL Reconstruction? Riley Williams and his team at HSS reported that 65% of athletes who did not return to play after ACL surgery cited a psychological reason for not returning, with fear of reinjury being the most common. Lack of confidence in the knee, depression and lack of interest or motivation were other reasons given. The authors also found that when psychological factors were present there was a prolonged time to return to play, at an average of 17.2 months across the included studies. The next article we'll be discussing also focuses on psychological factors that impact return to sport. From the July issue of AJSM this year, the paper is titled Factor Structure of the Shoulder Instability Return to Sport After Injury Scale. This scale was adapted from the ACL Return to Sport After Injury scale and is designed to measure the psychologic readiness to return to play after a shoulder dislocation. Authors Margie Olds and Kate Webster found that athletes return to sports after a shoulder dislocation relatively quickly, despite reporting high levels of fear and anxiety about reinjury. This may contribute to the high rate of recurrent shoulder instability in this population. Athletes who underwent surgical stabilization had significantly lower fear of reinjury. We are honored to have Dr. Robin West join us for the discussion today. Dr. West is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and is the Chairman of Inova Sports Medicine and President of Inova's Musculoskeletal Service Line. She is an associate professor at VCU School of Medicine and Georgetown University, and currently serves as the head team physician for the Washington Nationals baseball team. Dr. West earned her medical degree from George Washington University, where she also completed her orthopedic residency. She then went on to complete a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. West has extensive experience in the NFL, first as a team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers and then head team physician for the Washington Football team. She currently serves on the board of directors of the NFL Physicians Society and NFL Scouting Medical Committee.
