The scent of sage clung in the air as Saguache (suh-WATCH) county police officers entered the Moffat, Colorado, house of Miguel Lamboy on April 28, 2021. Since adopting a kitten from her local SPCA at the age of two, Kate's love and compassion for animals has been an unwavering pillar of her life, growing only stronger with each passing year. While working toward an undergraduate biology degree in Philadelphia, Kate pursued her love for animals by working as a veterinary technician and volunteering at a wildlife rescue facility. Ultimately, though, Kate recognized that her contributions to improving the treatment of animals would be through advocacy. She pursued a degree in law in Washington, DC, and since receiving it has been advocating for positive animal welfare policies at the state and federal levels. First as a senior lobbyist with The Humane Society of the United States, Kate managed a diverse advocacy portfolio focused on key issues including wildlife protection, animal testing, and agriculture. Now, Kate serves as IFAW's Senior Legislative Manager for the US office, representing wildlife and habitat conservation, wildlife trafficking, and appropriations priorities before the US Congress. This week, to celebrate Dry Cider January, Beer Sessions Radio is diving into the cider scene in the Finger Lakes, NY. Jimmy welcomes Autumn Stoschek from Eve’s Cidery in Van Etten, NY; Melissa Madden from Open Spaces Cider in Trumansburg, NY; and Deva Maas from Redbyrd Orchard Cider in Trumansburg, NY. Autumn, Melissa, and Deva each work on cideries and orchards that practice regenerative agriculture. To start the show off, they each offer Jimmy a run-through of exactly what this buzzy term means. In fact, despite its recent popularity, regenerative agriculture is actually working to revert back to a more traditional method of farming - one that creates an abundance of product, but also repairs and improves the land. Autumn explains how the legacy of problems existing on land and within society are all interconnected, and committing to reparations is crucial in order to make agriculture more inclusive. The cideries have become starting points to help members of the community engage and take steps towards making reparations. All three agree that there is a lot of emotional labor that goes into navigating the best approach. The Bourbon Lens Crew had the privilege of taking a private tour of the Rabbit Hole Distillery in Downtown Louisville recently. We sat down with the Brand’s Digital Ambassador, Adam Edwards, to discuss the history of the distillery, its founder Kaveh Zamanian, and the spirits they craft. We discuss the ultra exclusive Founder’s Collection and its first offering, Boxergrail Rye Whiskey at Cask Strength as well as future plans for the brand. And we discuss, maybe for the first time publicly, the Heigold single barrel program which will launch in 2021. Sophia Tang hiked the Colorado Trail this summer in 22 days, completely unsupported. She’d never backpacked a night in her life before and she was completely unrealistic about how many miles she could pack into a single day.
