Episode 16 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss The Hills Have Eyes (1977). Day 16 The Hills Have Eyes 1h 90m On July 22 of 1977, The Hills Have Eyes was released in the United States. Written and directed by Horror icon Wes Craven, The Hills Have Eyes is a horror thriller and the second feature directed by the influential director. After his first feature, Craven had a desire to escape the constraints of the horror genre. However, financiers had other plans, and producer Peter Locke, a friend of Wes Craven, decided to produce his next horror film. Wes Craven agreed and set out to make a more sophisticated horror movie that explored human depravity. He found inspiration in the story of Sawney Bean. The leader of a Scottish clan of cannibals in the 1600s. Other sources of inspirations included The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath. The film was shot in the Mojave desert on a 16mm camera borrowed from a director of pornographic films. With a budget of roughly half a million dollars, the cast was only paid minimum wage, and Producer Peter Locke was on set every day to ensure time was spent wisely. Some days of shooting reached temperatures of 120 degrees fahrenheit, and the cast had to do their own makeup. Understandably unenthusiastic, the cast and crew dreaded each day of filming. But further into the production, Craven's spirit and enthusiasm rubbed off on the crew, and the shoot went smoothly. The film was given an X rating initially, this resulted in significant amounts of footage getting cut for the final product. The title: The Hills Have Eyes was chosen against Craven's wishes, after the film was finished. Upon release, reviews were mixed, with many viewers comparing the gruesome content to Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Regardless of critical response, The Hills Have Eyes made over $25 million and spawned a series of sequels. It should come as no surprise to listeners that The Hills Have Eyes is now praised as a horror classic, thanks in no small part to the popularity of Wes Craven, director of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. Today The Hills Have Eyes has: 3.1/5 on Letterboxd 6.3/10 on IMDb 65% on rotten tomatoes 64% on metacritic 85% on google 6.8 average CTS score From the creators of Giant Monster BS: Gratton Conwill and Matt Fields bring you Only In Amityville season 2: Escape from Amityville! Episode 15 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Faust (1926). Day 15 Faust 1h 56m Released on October 14th of 1926 in Berlin, Faust was a German silent fantasy horror film directed by F.W. Murnau, of Nosferatu fame, and written by Hans Kyser. Based on a fairytale, this film was the first cinematic adaptation of the Faust story. Faust was an expensive production for its time, this is because Director F.W. Murnau's previous film was such a success, he was granted an unlimited budget for his next project. It briefly held the record for most expensive German film ever made until the title was taken by Metropolis the following year. While it seems absurd by today's standards, the studio actually decided they disliked the “script” by Hans Kyser after the movie was shot. However, there wasn't really a script since the film was silent. What the studio disliked were the intertitles edited throughout the film. Writer Gerhart Hauptmann was hired to make new intertitles, essentially rewriting the movie. When Hauptmann was finished, the studio decided they disliked the new titles even more than the ones by Kyser, so Kyser's titles ended up in the final cut. Speaking of final cuts, several cuts of Faust exist today, including a U.S. version prepared by F.W. Murnau himself, and a bilingual version intended to play on transatlantic boats for international audiences. The version we watched today was a reconstruction prepared by Kino International. Upon release, Faust only managed to make back half of its budget. Like many movies we've reviewed this year, Faust is part of the public domain, giving most interested viewers a chance to watch the movie and appreciate it in the modern age. Since its release, it has been reevaluated and is praised as extremely influential and many consider it to be one of the most visually impressive expressionist movies ever made. Some notable fans of Faust are Japanese director Shinji Aoyama and the late film critic Roger Ebert. Today Faust has: 4.1/5 on Letterboxd 8.1/10 on IMDb 94% on rotten tomatoes 91% on google 8.7 average CTS score Only In Amityville is an ad-free, self funded podcast hosted by Gratton Conwill and Matthew Fields. Episode 14 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss The Bat (1959). Day 14 The Bat 1h 20m Released on August 9th 1959, The Bat is an American Mystery film written and directed by Crane Wilbur. The story of the bat originated from a 1908 Novel titled The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rinehart. Since the novel's release, several adaptations have been made. The first silent film adaptation was made in 1915. However, the next adaptation would be made for the stage. The play adaptation of The Circular Staircase, titled The Bat, was released in 1920. Here's where things get a little convoluted. From here on out, the story would keep the “Bat” title. In the wake of the stage play, the 1915 movie would be re-released as The Bat. However, another silent film adaptation, this time helmed by a fan of the play, would release in 1926. The Bat play would be adapted back into a novel, this time opting to use the Bat title. A sound film remake of the 1926 silent film titled The Bat Whispers would be released in 1930. And finally, The Bat was made into one last film in 1959, which is the version we're watching today. Horror icon Vincent Price was compelled to pursue a role in this film as he recalled being very frightened by the stage play as a child. His attitude would change by the end of production, as he was not happy with the script or the final finished film. When the film was released, it played as a double feature with The Mummy (1959). Five years after The Bat, Cinematographer Joseph F. Biroc would shoot Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, the spiritual predecessor to What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice. Original reception was mixed to poor, and unlike many entries on this list, The Bat does not have a big modern following. One of the cultural byproducts of the Bat story was the creation of the superhero Batman in 1939 according to Batman co-creator Bob Kane, however this film holds the distinction of being the only Bat adaptation made in a post-Batman world. This movie has gone into the public domain, making it a very accessible movie over the internet. Episode 13 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss The Invisible Man (2020). Day 13 The Invisible Man 2h 4m Released on February 28th of 2020, The Invisible Man was written and directed by Australian filmmaker Leigh Whannell. This film is the most recent reboot in a series of films based on the Invisible Man Novel by H.G. Wells. This film had a particularly long development dating all the way back to 2006. Originally David S. Goyer was set to write the script for Universal, but by 2011, after no real progress, he was out of the picture. In 2016, the idea was revived as part of a new cinematic universe featuring several classic universal monsters. Ed Solomon was brought on board to write the new script, and Johnny Depp was cast as the titular invisible man. After the financial and critical failure of 2017's The Mummy, the first film in the aforementioned cinematic universe, Universal pictures trashed all plans for subsequent films, opting to release stand alone reboot films for each character with no connected universe. By this point, Jason Blum came on board as producer, and Leigh Whannell was hired to write and direct. This team would finally see the film release 14 years after the reboot was initially proposed. Upon release, The Invisible Man made its money back in just one day, and would gross over 20 times its budget at the box office during its theatrical run. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive, among the movie's fans was respected film critic Manohla Dargis. The film may have enjoyed even more success had it not been moved to streaming services three weeks after its theatrical debut as a result of Covid-19 theater closures. Director Whannell has stated that the film was created as a standalone film with a definitive ending, however due to the unprecedented success of The Invisible Man, more follow up movies are not out of the question. Episode 12 of Season 2! Hosts Gratton Conwill, Matt Fields, and special guest Zain Hashmat discuss The Holy Mountain (1973). Day 12 The Holy Mountain 1hr 46m The Holy Mountain was released in May of 1973. It's a Mexican surrealist fantasy film directed and written by Alejandro Jodorowsky. The director also stars as the Alchemist. The story of the film was based on the novel Mount Analogue by René Daumal. However, since Daumal died before the novel was completed, Alejandro Jodorowsky had to create his own ending to the story. Intent on committing to the spiritual and psychedelic themes of the movie, Jodorowsky used several unorthodox activities to steep the cast into the material. Spiritual exercises, yoga, communal living in the Director's home, consumption of LSD, and mushrooms were just some examples of what went on behind the scenes. Before filming began, Jodorowsky went a week without sleep under the guidance of a Japanese zen master. Once filming began, things did not calm down. A scene involving the cast jumping into the ocean went awry when the actors started drowning. Nothing of the scene was captured as the crew had to rescue the cast from the water. The film had an estimated budget of $750,000, which contradicts a popular claim that ex-Beatle John Lennon himself donated $1 million to the film's production. Due to the film's bizarre nature, unhinged production, and (for its time) controversial subject matter involving religion and violence, The Holy Mountain has a big cult following. For over 30 years The Holy Mountain was not officially available on home video in the united states, but thanks to modern boutique media companies and a staying interest in director Alejandro Jodorowsky, The Holy Mountain is now widely available for fans to see. Episode 11 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1969). Day 11 What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice 1h 41m What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice is a Hollywood Horror-thriller film directed by Lee H. Katzin and written by Theodore Apstein. It premiered on July 23rd 1969. It was adapted from Ursula Curtiss' 1962 novel: The Forbidden Garden. The name of the movie brings to mind Robert Aldrich's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, and this was no mistake. Aldrich was a producer for What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice and the name was meant to attract some of the success that Baby Jane experienced 7 years earlier. In the years following the release of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, the hagsploitation genre exploded. Hagsploitation usually involved the practice of casting older actresses who were popular decades earlier as deranged or murderous older women in horror-thriller films. Aldrich produced a loose series of unconnected hagsploitation films starting with Baby Jane in 1962 and ending with What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice in 1969. After The Forbidden Garden Novel gained popularity, Robert Aldrich bought the rights to make a film adaptation, seeing the potential to make something similar to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane and Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Filming began with Bernard Girard as director. After just four weeks of filming, Girard left the production, citing “differences in interpretation” as the reason. He was replaced by Lee H. Katzin and went uncredited in the final film. Producer Robert Aldrich also had plans to make a final “What Ever Happened to” film based on the novel Goodbye, Aunt Elva by Elizabeth Fenwick, but the project never materialized. Despite a mostly positive reception, the film was a financial loss for the studio. Today, What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice has a cult horror status and has been named by Edgar Wright as one of his 1000 favorite films. Episode 10 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Häxan (1922). Day 10 Häxan 1h 45m Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages is a Swedish silent film that premiered on September 18th 1922. It was written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. The title in Swedish translates to “The Witch.” Like the other silent films featured this season, the director stars in the film as well. Christensen appears as the Devil, Jesus Christ, and himself in Häxan. Many descriptions of Häxan struggle to place it in any genre. As an early film, Häxan was experimental in the way the material was approached. Informed by a 15th century book on hunting witches, Häxan was meant as a documentary with well produced dramatization scenes. What resulted was something that hasn't been replicated. Part essay film, part horror, Häxan is a product of the silent era as it conforms to none of the filmmaking rules we associate with contemporary cinema. At the time of its production, Häxan was the most expensive film produced in any Scandinavian country. Filmed entirely in Denmark, Häxan was shot both indoors and at night, which was uncommon for films of this era. As a result of the emulsion of the film stock used, the blue of many of the actors' eyes did not register, giving them a unique appearance. Originally, Häxan was intended to be the first film in a trilogy, however Director Benjamin Christensen never made the sequels. After falling into the public domain, Häxan became widely available, albeit usually in poor quality. But the result was Häxan becoming one of the most prevalent silent horror films remembered by movie fans. Among its contemporary fans is the acclaimed horror and effects film director Guillermo del Toro and, unsurprisingly, Robert Eggers. With a place in “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die” and the Criterion Collection, Haxan enjoys an impressive status as a celebrated and respected piece of film history. It shares its name with the 1934 novel it was adapted from. It was the last film produced by Seven Arts Productions before they were acquired by Warner Brothers in 1967. The film's star, Christopher Lee, played a large role in getting this film made and considered this his favorite Hammer production. Although pre-production began in 1963, the movie was pushed back so that the subject matter of Satanism would be less of an issue to censors. The author of The Devil Rides Out novel, Dennis Wheatley, was apparently so pleased with the movie adaptation that he gifted Christopher Lee a first edition copy of the book. For release in the United States, the name of the movie was changed to The Devil's Bride because The Devil Rides Out sounded too much like a western. Episode 8 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Onibaba (1964). Day 8 Onibaba 1h 45m Onibaba (translated as Demon Hag) is a Japanese historical drama and horror film written and directed by Kaneto Shindô. It was released in Japan on November 21, 1964. In a subversive turn of events, an unedited, subtitled version was released theatrically in the United States less than a year later. In the wake of popular Japanese period films such as Yojimbo, distributors were less inclined to change Japanese drama films for foreign audiences. This makes Onibaba a rare example of a foreign film being brought to the states completely untouched from the time of its release. That being said, Onibaba was edited down for its UK release as the original edit was rejected by UK censors. Onibaba was based on a Buddhist parable about a woman who scares her daughter in law by wearing a mask and jumping out from behind a bush. In the parable, she is punished by Buddha who makes the mask stick to her face, when she begs for the mask to come off, it finally does but it takes her face with it. Episode 7 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Night of the Demon (1957). Day 7 Night of the Demon 1h 36m Night of the Demon is a British black and white horror film released in December of 1957. It was directed by Jaques Tourner and written Charles Bennett and Hal E. Chester. The script was based on the 1911 short story “Casting the Runes.” The story of this movie's production is an interesting one. Upon acquiring the rights to the short story, Charles Bennett loosely adapted it into a screenplay titled The Haunted. He sold the screenplay to an independent producer, Hal E. Chester. Unfortunately for Bennett, not long after the script was sold, he was approached by RKO with an offer to buy the script and let him direct. Since the script was already sold, Bennett could not accept the offer although he would have preferred to direct the movie himself. After producer Hal E. Chester brought in French director Jaques Tourner of Cat People fame, the two had numerous disputes continuing into post production. Tourner claimed that he never wanted the demon to be shown in the final film, however Chester disagreed and without the director's blessing, added shots of the demon in post production. At an earlier point in production, Tourner was so upset with script changes made by Chester that he threatened to shoot him. In its original theatrical run, Night of the Demon was shown as a double feature with 20 Million Miles to Earth. As was the trend however, this movie was edited down and renamed for a delayed American release. The film was renamed from Night of the Demon to Curse of the Demon. The rationale being that the distributors did not want audiences confusing Night of the Demon with The Night of the Iguana. Although this explanation comes from producer Charles Bennett himself, the Tennessee Williams play The Night of the Iguana would not debut until three years later in 1961, and the John Huston film adaptation would not be made until 1964. I could not find any details of the financial or critical success of Night of the Demon when it was released. But, as it stands today, Night of the Demon is considered a British Horror classic and managed to land 9th place in Martin Scorsese's list of 11 scariest horror movies of all time. Episode 6 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss The Phantom Carriage (1921). Day 6 The Phantom Carriage 1hr 46m The Phantom Carriage was released on January first of 1921. It's a Swedish silent horror film directed and written by Victor Sjöström. In addition, Sjöström stars as the character David Holm in the film. The Phantom Carriage was based on a 1912 Swedish novel, Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! by Selma Lagerlöf. An anecdote about the preproduction of this movie involves Sjöström visiting author Selma Lagerlöf at her home and reading the entire screenplay aloud while acting out each part. Upon finishing, Sjöström collapsed into her couch from exhaustion. In response, Lagerlöf offered him something to drink as her blessing of his adaptation. Noteworthy for its special effects, The Phantom Carriage had a lengthy post production of five months which was very unusual for the time. The double exposures used throughout the film were all achieved in camera, as optical printing technology would not be available until the 1930's. This means that each time they shot a scene, the camera had to be hand cranked at precisely the same speed during both of the separate exposures. This movie's legacy today is found in its influences on directors Ingmar Bergman and Stanley Kubrick. Bergman would even go as far as casting Victor Sjöström in his 1957 drama, Wild Strawberries. Another notable figure in film history who enjoyed this movie was Charlie Chaplin who once called this movie the best film ever made, although he was likely referring to the heavily edited version released in the U.S. in 1922. The Phantom Carriage has: 4.0 on Letterboxd 8.1/10 on IMDb 100% on rotten tomatoes 92% on google 8.83 average CTS score From the creators of Giant Monster BS: Gratton Conwill and Matt Fields bring you Only In Amityville season 2: Escape from Amityville! Episode 5 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Black Sabbath (1963). Day 5 Black Sabbath 1h 33m Released on August 17th 1963, Black Sabbath is a low budget Italian horror anthology film directed by Mario Bava. Screenplay credits were given to Mario bava as well as Marcelo Fondato. An English language version of the film was made at the same time as the Italian version as American international pictures (known as AIP) was involved in the production. The two versions are very different with the English version being heavily edited and censored. It's important to mention the version we're about to review is the unedited Italian version originally titled The three faces of fear. Though we're reviewing this movie as Black Sabbath, that was really only the title of the AIP version. The Black Sabbath title was an effort to connect this film to Mario Bava's previous film Black Sunday. While the English version was a moderate success, in Italy The three faces of fear was a financial failure. The legacy of this film is its influence on the heavy metal band Black Sabbath. The band is said to have changed their name from “Earth” to Black Sabbath after seeing that this movie was playing in a movie theater and selling more tickets than the band was. Quentin Tarantino has also cited Black Sabbath as a source of inspiration for pulp fiction. Some trivia: This is the only movie in which Boris Karloff plays a vampire. The telephone section was the first Italian thriller to be shot in color. It's important to mention the version we're about to review is the edited AIP version originally titled The three faces of fear. Today the movie has somewhat of a cult following for a number of previously mentioned reasons. Mario Bava is considered an extremely influential Italian horror director. Day 4 Willys Wonderland 1h 28m Released on February 12th 2021, Willy's Wonderland was directed by Kevin Lewis and written by G. O. Parsons. Willy's Wonderland was originally scheduled for release on October 30th of 2020, but was postponed due to Covid 19. Similarities have been drawn between Willy's Wonderland and The Banana splits movie as well as the five nights at Freddy's video game franchise. Given the premise of Willy's wonderland, it's a safe bet that Five nights at Freddy's was a large source of inspiration for the film's plot. That being said, Willy's Wonderland is a full length adaptation of G. O. Parson's 2016 short film Wally's Wonderland which was released just two years after the release of the first five nights at Freddy's video game. While this film and The banana splits movie share a similar cult following because of their connections to the popular game franchise, Willy's wonderland has proven to be exponentially more popular, overshadowing the the banana splits movie despite releasing two years later. The presence of fan favorite actor Nicolas Cage is likely the source of the movie's success. Original reviews were mixed. Day 3 The Banana Splits Movie 1h 29m Released on July 18th 2019, The Banana Splits Movie was directed by Canadian filmmaker Danishka Esterhazy. The screenplay was written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas. The film is a reimagining of the 1968 children's tv show The banana splits adventure hour. Although Chopping mall from 1986 and the original child's play are cited as inspiration for the banana splits movie, notable connections have been made between this movie and the five nights at Freddy's video game franchise. As a result, The Banana Splits Movie has a small cult following. Initial reviews were mostly favorable with critics embracing the absurd premise and elements of horror comedy. Being one of the more contemporary movies on our list, it remains to be seen what legacy, if any, The Banana Splits movie will have in the coming years. But because of its bizarre nature, it seemed worth including for variety if nothing else. Day 2 Eyes Without a Face 1h 30m Eyes Without a Face is a French horror film directed by Georges Franju and released on March 2nd 1960. The film was written by a total of five people including director Franju. An additional writing credit is given to Jean Redon, who wrote the book upon which the movie was based. An edited and dubbed version was released in North America on the 24th of October 1962 as The Horror Chamber of Doctor Faustus. Original reception in Europe was mild to poor with many reviews dismissing it as an empty genre film since the director was an established and respected documentary filmmaker. It was considered a little shocking for the time with people in audiences allegedly leaving or fainting during some scenes. Over the years the reception changed into mostly a mostly positive one. An unedited version was finally released theatrically in North America on Halloween of 2003. Before making Eyes Without a Face, Director Georges Franju co-founded the Cinématheque Française organization in 1936. Cinématheque Française is a nonprofit film archive with an extensive collection of films and film artifacts considered one of the largest in the world. Eyes Without a Face is credited as the inspiration for the Billy idol song: Eyes without a face. Episode 1 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss The Golem (1920). Day 1 The Golem 1h 31m The Golem, originally released as The Golem: how he came into the world, premiered on October 29th 1920. The Golem film we're reviewing today is one of three golem films directed by Paul Wegener. The other two films are considered to be lost although pieces of the first film have been found in recent years including the entire second reel which was discovered in an archive alongside “lost scenes” from Metropolis. Unfortunately this is common as over 90% of all movies made before 1929 are thought to be lost forever. Director Paul Wegener co-wrote The Golem with Henrik Galeen and stars as the titular Golem as he did in the two preceding films. This movie is a prequel to the first lost film and is based off of a 1915 book by Gustav meyrink. The Golem falls into the genre of German romantic cinema. As the world in the movie is meant to be similar to the real world, it distinguishes itself from expressionist films like the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Cinematographer Karl Freund would go on to have an impressive career in film and television. Being the cinematographer for Metropolis, Dracula, and even I love Lucy. He also directed The Mummy in 1932. In film history, this movie and the two lost films are considered to be the first movie trilogy ever made. In addition, this was likely the first prequel film ever made. Wegener's golem is thought to be one of the first cinematic icons of horror.
