Robert Aldrich's Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Not a "Midnight Movie" but certainly one of the great Cult Classics, 1962s Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? was an audience's dream pairing. The coming together of Oscar winners Bette Davis and Joan Crawford - two of the greatest stars the medium has known - created a film that has captivated film lovers for decades. The story of two sisters - volatile, abusive, and mutually destructive - has become a love/hate letter to the entertainment industry as well as continuing fuel to the bitterness surrounding its two stars. On this episode, Mr. Chavez & I dig through the film's creative history, the relationship between Davis and Crawford, and our own interpretations of the movie and its lasting impact in the culture. Take a listen and let us know what you think. As always we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many, Many Thanks. Buonopalooza rolls on with Robert Aldrich's Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). Following the massive success of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Aldrich re-teamed with Bette Davis for another Southern Gothic nightmare. This time, Davis plays Charlotte Hollis, a reclusive woman haunted by whispers of murder and locked in a decaying Louisiana mansion where secrets fester and madness simmers. The film co-stars Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead, and—of course—Victor Buono in a pivotal role. Mike White is joined by Tim Madigan and Otto Bruno to dig into the history, the production troubles, and the legacy of one of the juiciest entries in the “Psycho-Biddy” cycle.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

We're kicking off a month devoted to the inimitable presence of Victor Buono — though in our opening pick, “starring” might be generous. Let's say “featuring,” and featuring with impact. Robert Aldrich's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) stands as the grand dame of “Hagsploitation” — or “Psycho Biddy,” if you prefer — with Joan Crawford and Bette Davis locked in a barbed-wire sister act as Blanche and Baby Jane Hudson. Mike White is joined by authors Otto Bruno and Tim Madigan to unpack the film's camp, cruelty, and craft.Plus, actor Dominic Burgess — who portrayed Buono in Ryan Murphy's Feud — drops in to talk about stepping into the oversized shoes of this unforgettable supporting player.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

Because everyone loves a double meaning, Milwaukee Film took one look at the month of June, contemplated it being the start of summer as well as Pride Month, and came up with a movie series titled “Summer CAMP!” that covers the latter with just a sprinkling of the former. The 10 films selected for the monthlong run primarily reflect the Merriam-Webster definition of camp as “something so outrageously artificial, affected, inappropriate, or out-of-date as to be considered amusing.” You'll also find a couple movies that head to camp as in cabins and mosquitos and — in one case — slasher horror. Here's the full lineup, all of which unspool at the Oriental Theatre:Death Becomes Her — June 4 at 6:30 p.m.Polyester (in Odorama!) — June 6 at 7:30 p.m.Xanadu — June 7-8 at 3 p.m.Grease 2 — June 12-13 at 9:30 p.m.Showgirls — June 19-21 at 9 p.m.Brokeback Mountain (4K restoration) — June 22 at noon and 6 p.m.; June 24 and 26 at 6 p.m.Moonrise Kingdom — June 21-22 at 3 p.m.D.E.B.S. — June 26-27 at 9 p.m.What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? — June 28-29 at 3:45 p.m.Sleepaway Camp — June 28 at 9:45 p.m.
We kick off our regular Pride series for 2025 with a camp classic that was embraced by gay audiences almost immediately upon release. Warner Brothers brought together two legends of Hollywood, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, introduced the world to Victor Buono, and put it all under the careful, deliberate direction of Hollywood iconoclast, Robert Aldrich for a movie that spawned a cultural obsession with movies about older ladies losing their god damn minds. It's the psycho-biddy, hagsploitation nightmare of What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? We'll explore what it is about this movie that was so immediately appealing to gay audiences of the 1960's and beyond. We'll talk about the simmering, mostly made-up feud between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis and Crawford's petty, bizarre stunt at the 35th Academy Awards as payback for the perceived slight of Bette Davis getting all the attention. And we'll break it all down in our usual fashion to tell you exactly why this movie is so god damn good and why it persists in the world's imagination as we celebrate Pride all month long with a series highlight and celebrate queer film and filmmakers.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon: https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of abuse, car accidents, aging, mental illness.. If last week was about a world war, this film is about a two-woman war. Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were two of the bitterest rivals in the 30's and 40's, but by 1962 both were desperate for a hit. So was director Robert Aldrich, and the three combined to create a unique blend of gothic horror and Hollywood cynicism that still resonates today. CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of deafness, blindness, ableism. D-Day happened over 80 years ago, and to this day, there's only been two films that capture the scope and scale of that bloody day. This movie is one of those, and unfortunately it's the boring one. To be clear, the battle sequences are among some of the best committed to celluloid; there's a few moments that will make you gasp at how well legendary ringleader Darryl F. Zanuck captures the battlefield. But then we turn to the characters, and they're all a) played by actors double the age of the characters and b) say the absolute hokiest lines you'll hear in a war movie. It may be an accurate film, but this definitely isn't entertaining history. We continue Oscars ‘62 as we discuss The Longest Day onMacintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss two cold cases that were solved due to advancements in DNA and genealogy. First, they discuss the case of Baby Garin, who was abandoned in a grocery bag in California in 1994. The second was known as Baby Jane Doe, who was discovered as a frozen newborn in Northern Maine.
