What are the differences between the Japanese and American version of The Ring? What is the difference between the English and American release of Night of the Demon? What was the original ending to The Ring and what happened to it? Why is Night of the Demon called Curse of the Demon in the US? There was a minor category of Hollywood films, made between Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939 and the attack on Pearl Harbor in late '41, that I've nicknamed “We Need to Enter the War” films. The American public was largely wary of joining in—the attitude being “let Europe solve its own problems”—but a significant portion of the filmmaking industry wanted people to know about the danger of isolationism. Possibly the best example of this kind of movie is Foreign Correspondent, from 1940, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, himself a recent arrival to Hollywood from England. A brash young reporter (played by Joel McCrea) is sent to Europe on the eve of war to provide a fresh perspective for American readers. He hooks up with a peace organization in Holland, run by the urbane Mr. Fisher (Herbert Marshall), and falls in love with Fisher’s daughter (Laraine Day). When the reporter witnesses the assassination of a Dutch diplomat who was central to the cause of peace, he ends up on the trail of a mysterious organization of spies. It’s easy to forget that the thriller genre didn’t get very much respect until Hitchcock came around. He brought style and dedication to the form, and this particular example is one of the smoothest and most entertaining films of the ‘40s. There are two great set pieces. The assassination scene, in which a man shoots the diplomat during a downpour, then escapes through a sea of umbrellas, is a complex masterwork of editing. It’s soon followed by a sequence in a windmill (Hitchcock had a fondness for staging scenes in such out of the ordinary places) where McCrea manages to slink through the building, escaping the spies’ notice while the inner machinery rotates the blades, the moving camera providing a perfect sense of the spatial relationships in the windmill. What was already a stock situation (good guy hides within earshot of bad guys) is transformed into pure visual pleasure and excitement. One of the more curious aspects of the film is the character played by George Sanders, a suave and witty English reporter who happens to be a friend of Fisher’s daughter, and helps the American reporter solve the mystery. Sanders is great here—in fact, he’s so good that he becomes the film’s hero, playing the key role of daredevil rescuer in the film’s finale, rather than the star McCrea, as Hollywood convention would dictate. Did Hitchcock and his screenwriter Charles Bennett, both British, elevate the English character’s role as some kind of tribute to the mother country, which was under violent siege at the time of filming? I don’t know, but it’s certainly unusual—not that it spoils the fun in any way. Foreign Correspondent ends with a bit of uplifting propaganda, McCrea broadcasting a warning to the rest of the world, and this is perfectly understandable. But its value as entertainment outweighs its political significance, then and now.

Aż połączył obie dziedziny w 1991 roku, proponując wykorzystanie zjawisk kwantowych do kryptografii. Ekerta prognozowaną, odbiorą we trójkę? Episode 7 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Night of the Demon (1957). Day 7 Night of the Demon 1h 36m Night of the Demon is a British black and white horror film released in December of 1957. It was directed by Jaques Tourner and written Charles Bennett and Hal E. Chester. The script was based on the 1911 short story “Casting the Runes.” The story of this movie's production is an interesting one. Upon acquiring the rights to the short story, Charles Bennett loosely adapted it into a screenplay titled The Haunted. He sold the screenplay to an independent producer, Hal E. Chester. Unfortunately for Bennett, not long after the script was sold, he was approached by RKO with an offer to buy the script and let him direct. Since the script was already sold, Bennett could not accept the offer although he would have preferred to direct the movie himself. After producer Hal E. Chester brought in French director Jaques Tourner of Cat People fame, the two had numerous disputes continuing into post production. Tourner claimed that he never wanted the demon to be shown in the final film, however Chester disagreed and without the director's blessing, added shots of the demon in post production. At an earlier point in production, Tourner was so upset with script changes made by Chester that he threatened to shoot him. In its original theatrical run, Night of the Demon was shown as a double feature with 20 Million Miles to Earth. As was the trend however, this movie was edited down and renamed for a delayed American release. The film was renamed from Night of the Demon to Curse of the Demon. The rationale being that the distributors did not want audiences confusing Night of the Demon with The Night of the Iguana. Although this explanation comes from producer Charles Bennett himself, the Tennessee Williams play The Night of the Iguana would not debut until three years later in 1961, and the John Huston film adaptation would not be made until 1964. I could not find any details of the financial or critical success of Night of the Demon when it was released. But, as it stands today, Night of the Demon is considered a British Horror classic and managed to land 9th place in Martin Scorsese's list of 11 scariest horror movies of all time. Night of the Demon has: 3.8 on Letterboxd 7.5/10 on IMDb 100% on rotten tomatoes 91% on google 8.58 average CTS score Escape from Amityville is a limited series podcast event happening exclusively during October of 2021! We’ve got a real juicy one for you this week from our friends across the pond. Who doesn’t love some runes, a curse, and an ACTUAL DEMON? Right from the get-go, “Night of the Demon” threw us into a mysterious, windy, wet, witchy, world with just the right amount of whodunnit. Even with a pretty unpalatable protagonist, the surrounding talent (both on-screen and behind the camera) carried this film all the way to it’s grand finale. Garnering a double “rent” from the fellas, there was plenty to commend. Where we watched: Blu-ray Night of the Demon (1957) Directed by Jacques Tourneur Written by Charles Bennett and Hal E. We talk to Dom about joining the Menace and The Man 4 timers club, we talk about how he was on Episode 1 of the show, we talk his big win over Chris Weidman, we talk about regular dudes trying to fight Dom, people always trying to fight Stan the Man, how Menace avoids altercations, we talk about girls sliding into Dom's DM's, we get into the light heavyweight title picture, wanting to fight Jon Jones next, eyeing Jones his entire career, walking out to fight to a Montell Jordan song, Montell hitting him up because of it, going to UFC 244 & much more. Around 1:34:35 we call up one of the wildest dudes in fighting Felony Charles Bennett. If you follow any MMA pages on social media there is a very good chance you have seen some of his highlights, from backstage fights, to helicoptering guys to avoid submissions, his funny antics in Japan, just don't call him crazy. We talk to Felony about his upcoming fight in bare knuckle boxing vs Johnny Bedford, some of his fights in Japan, the first time he met Menace, he tells us some funny life experiences, wanting Vladimir Putin to be his president, his friendship with Rashad Evans, he sparks up a blunt to tell us about the time he got into a scuffle with Wanderlei Silva & much more. We then make our pick for Ben Askren vs Demian Maia and call it a show. Hope you enjoy!
