Ten years ago, 2015 was the year of the epic Western. Two films, Alejandro Iñárritu's The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, clocked in at an average length of 170 minutes and scored a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning 4 between them. As a pair, the two films brought in nearly $700 million at the box office. Along with John Maclean's Sundance darling Slow West, the year marked a return to prominence of the western genre, foreshadowing the next decade's breakout hits like Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and Hell or High Water, and Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Slipping somewhat under the radar in 2015 was the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler, a prolific author and screenwriter with a penchant for wit, grit, and gore. Zahler cast Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins in a Western akin to John Ford's The Searchers by way of Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes. When townsfolk are kidnapped by a clan of troglodyte cannibals, four men - the sheriff, a cowboy, a gunslinger, and the back-up deputy - ride out as a posse to rescue them. The indie film quickly earned praise for its direction, dialogue, and disturbing imagery, and has built a cult following in the decade hence. But is our posse of hosts in agreement on how Bone Tomahawk lands? Or will we, too, be split down the middle? Send us a textLive show audio, y'all. Let's discuss three true crime cases and the horror movies they inspired. First, we're going to be discussing The Hills Have Eyes franchise and the legend of a cannibalistic Scottish clan that inspired it. Then, we'll talk about the movie Changeling and the tragic murder case at its center. Finally, we'll discuss Borderland, which was inspired by a drug lord who thought a human sacrifice would make his men invisible. Sean leaves the main road in the Nevada desert and discovers The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Wes Craven's shocking follow up to Last House on the Left, which locks an American nuclear family in life-or-death combat with an inbred clan of cannibals, inspired by the legend of Sawney Bean. Every so often, something hits the inbox that stops me in my tracks. This is one of those emails. In this episode, I'm sharing a message from a man named Marcus—someone who claims to be a former member of a secretive military unit tasked with cleaning up after encounters with cryptids, aliens, and other classified threats. Bigfoot. Dogman. UFOs. You name it—he says he's seen it, and worse. But the reason Marcus reached out? That's where things get truly unsettling.According to him, his unit was deployed to deal with a terrifying incident involving feral people—a group deep in the wilderness responsible for a string of disappearances and brutal killings. He claims they weren't just wild… they were organized. Dangerous. Predatory. If you've listened to That Bigfoot Podcast, you'll know Wayne and I have talked about feral people in the Appalachians before. And while it sounds like the stuff of horror movies, there are documented cases of strange disappearances and alleged human predators in remote areas. Marcus's email adds a new layer to that disturbing possibility.Let me be clear:I cannot verify Marcus's identity or his story. This is not presented as fact. But it was compelling, detailed, and dark enough that I felt it was worth sharing with you.⚠️ LISTENER DISCRETION IS STRONGLY ADVISED.This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence, death, and intense combat scenarios involving humans, cryptids, and alleged non-human entities. It is absolutely not suitable for children or sensitive listeners.Whether you believe Marcus or not, what he describes is chilling—and once you hear it, you won't forget it.Join Mireya's Explorer Society Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AMBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

We all know the GOOD horror movie remakes; The Thing, The Fly, The Blob, etc, but what about the remakes that are a little more underappreciated? Everyone now is foolishly remaking good movies into meh/garbage films, but what about taking a solidly meh movie to begin with and giving it a loving touchup? Wes Craven's 1977 ‘The Hills Have Eyes” is a bland version of the Sawney Bean legend, but what if that was jazzed up a bit into, say, a 2006 retelling focusing on the dangers of nuclear testing in the American Southwest? Well say what if no longer, because that's what we're covering today.

Can tell that Michael is a very passionate and loving person and he still carries that passion with him wherever he goes. Just to sit and talk to him about his acting career is an absolute honor and pleasure – this guy has done it all. Another legendary actor dubbed as a ‘Chameleon' – being able to flawlessly deliver any role handed to him. Especially as “Super Freddy” – who we all know is an icon in the horror community and the A Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise. A good chunk of us are probably buried under snow right now, so why not grab our skis and hit the slopes? While we're at it, we might as well crank some obscure 80s Swedish hair metal but be careful - they rock so hard that their music sometimes causes avalanches! It should be fine… What's worse is there's a murderous group of Hills Have Eyes knockoffs chilling in the nearby factory and definitely not enough lighting on set to show the viewer who's killing who. That's 1985's BLOOD TRACKS in a nutshell (we think - it was really dark) and we're digging ourselves out of that fluffy white stuff this week; we may even shovel some snow! One of the things we continue to preach on this podcast is learning about the people that are involved with the films we love. It helps you see more and understand more, about the person, as well as the final product they are involved with, whether they are an actor, makeup artist, or director. Author Joe Maddrey's recent book, The Soul of Wes Craven, from Harker Press, does just this, digging deep into the man, and shows us fans a lot more behind this Master of Horror than we might not have known. To help dig into Craven and his work, we invited Mr. Maddrey on the show to talk about his book and this highly influential filmmaker. Films mention in this episode: Act of Vengeance (1974), Alone in the Dark (1982), Angel Heart (1987), The Believers (1987), Chiller (1985), Deadly Friend (1986), Death Wish (1974), Dreamscape (1984), Frankenstein Unbound (1990), Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985), Ghost (1990), Hills Have Eyes (1977), Hills Have Eyes 2 (1984), The Horror Show (1989), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Jacob's Ladder (1990), Last House on the Left (1972), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Red (2005), Scream (1996), The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988), Shocker (1989), Swamp Thing (1982), The Thing (1982), Together (1971), War of the Worlds (1953), Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mac back to the show to discuss the 1984 Horror sequel, The Hills Have Eyes Part II. In this sequel to the far superior 1977 franchise starter, a bunch of dummies get lost in the American Southwest and get picked off by a bunch of literal hillbillies. All of us watched the original too, so this is actually a two-fer as we discuss both movies. Obviously we all liked the original more, but still had fun discussing both. Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mac back onto the podcast as we discuss what we were up to this last week. The Hills Have Eyes 2 coming this Wednesday.
Okay we've seen some of these, like The Hills Have Eyes, but The Witch, and something from the 60s about ghosts?
ONE TWO, Freddy's coming for you...THREE FOUR, Better lock your door...Forty years ago this November saw the release of one of the most influential horror films of all time directed by the late, great Wes Craven who would gradually be acknowledged as one of the true masters of the horror genre having directed iconic genre classics before this (The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left) and after, most notably Scream which would come out twelve years later. And what he created as both writer and director was a truly terrifying concept: An otherworldly monster who could invade your dreams to murder you while you were asleep. :o That monster was of course Freddy Krueger played by Robert England, sporting a crinkled fedora and most memorably a leather glove with sharpened razor blades protruding from each finger. Freddy was the stuff of nightmares and quickly caught fire as a hugely popular film icon. Fortunately, there were folks on the side of good to fight and hopefully defeat this new evil force....for this first film, they were lead by mild-mannered teenager Nancy played by Heather Langenkamp. And she had help including her father played by John Saxon (Enter the Dragon) and her boyfriend by a young, baby-faced Johnny Depp in his film debut. Let's head on over to Elm Street....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

IN THIS EPISODE: Spending the night in a haunted house is always unnerving, but would you pay for the experience? If you're looking for a spooky escape, maybe you could try a haunted AirBNB! You might not rest in peace in these haunted homes, but you're bound to have a memorable night preparing for paranormal activity, seeking the supernatural, and greeting ghosts. (Book A Stay At a Haunted AirBNB) *** Sawney Bean, said to be the leader of a 45-member clan in Scotland, is infamously accused of murdering and cannibalizing over 1,000 people in the early 16th century. His story inspired the horror film, ‘The Hills Have Eyes.' But did Sawney Bean ever truly exist? (The Man Who Inspired ‘The Hills Have Eyes') *** Nestled in the Kentish Weald, the quaint village of Stalisfield boasts a thousand-year-old church and timeless tranquility. But beneath its serene surface, whispers of ancient pagan rites and dark ceremonies linger. Could the chilling past of sacrificial rituals still echo through the village today? (The Stalisfield Blade) *** As dusk fell, a pickup truck pulled up to a motel outside Tarzana. Inside, Brother Elzibah and his monks prepared for a perilous mission, recording martyr statements and arming themselves with explosives. Their target on December 10, 1958: Krishna Venta, a self-styled prophet in Box Canyon. This night promised a dramatic showdown that would mark a violent chapter in the history of American spiritual communes, and the country's cults.
