Imagine no possessions, but that doesn't mean you can't make a fortune on cattle futures or sue the government to get out of paying taxes on your investments! All the Beatles moved at least part of their personal fortunes to the USA to avoid the UK's Socialist taxes. That would the USA. You know, the most capitalistic, most militaristic, and richest nation in the history of the world. You can sing about India and Bangladesh and collectivist societies, just don't actually move there!

What the Riff?!?
1975 - May: David Bowie "Young Americans"

What the Riff?!?

David Bowie would leave the glam rock genre of his previous albums for a more soulful sound with his ninth studio album, Young Americans.  This album features blue eyed soul, or what Bowie would refer to as "plastic soul."  David Bowie moved to the United States in 1974 during a time when tax concerns were driving many artists out of the UK.  He was living in New York City at the time, and starting production on the album in Philadelphia where he worked with guitarist Carlos Alomar.  A funk guitarist, Alomar had worked as a session musician at the Apollo Theater and would become a collaborator and band leader for Bowie over the next decade.  In addition to Carlos Alomar, Bowie worked on this album with a number of artists including Robin Clark, Ava Cherry, saxophonist David Sanborn, and a new musician named Luther Vandross. He would also collaborate on this album with ex-Beatle John Lennon who was recording in New York at the same time as Bowie's recording moved there.  Bowie and Lennon had met previously at a party hosted by Elizabeth Taylor.  Lennon collaborated with Bowie during his "lost weekend" period.Young Americans contains elements of soul, funk, and R&B, and was a deliberate attempt to garner more success in the U.S. market.  It certainly achieved this result, though critics would deliver mixed reviews.  The transition from glam rock to blue-eyed soul would not be one which all fans embraced, but David Bowie would follow his own creative muse.  It would not be the last time we would see a significant stylistic change from Bowie.  It was nevertheless a commercial success, going to number 9 on the US albums chart, remaining on the charts for almost a year.Rob brings us this funky example of “plastic soul.” Young AmericansThe title track was recorded in Philadelphia, and hit number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, Bowie's second-highest chart success to this date.  Then unknown singer Luther Vandross conceived the backing vocal arrangement.  The song provides impressions of American life through the eyes of an English man.  David Sanborn provides the saxophone work.Across the UniverseThis cover of the Beatles song also found collaboration with Beatles' alumnus John Lennon.  Backing vocals and guitar are provided by Lennon, who considered this song a better version than his own.  Critics tend to disagree, as reviews on the Bowie version were primarily negative.FascinationThis track began as a jam by Luther Vandross entitled “Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)” which was performed before the Bowie concerts in 1974.  When Vandross was retained from the “Diamond Dogs” tour, the two collaborated to create the song “Fascination.”  The song was an homage to the Philadelphia funk sound.FameThis single hit number 1 on the US charts, the first Bowie song to do so.  Composed by Bowie, Alomar, and Lennon, the high backing “Fame” vocalizations are provided by John Lennon.  Bowie would describe it as a “nasty, angry” song directed at management with which he had previous issues. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ease On Down the Road by Consumer Rapport (from the motion picture The Wiz)A soulful take on The Wizard of Oz featured Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. STAFF PICKS:Judy Mae by Boomer Castleman Wayne initiates the staff picks with a controversial song that went to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics tell of a father to a 17 year-old girl who marries a woman half his age.  When an affair ensures between the stepmother and the daughter, the father dies of an accident shortly thereafter.  It feels like a racier version of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”Long Haired Country Boy by the Charlie Daniels BandBrian brings us a song about a guy with a very passive attitude about life. “I ain't asking for nobody for nuthin' that I can't get on my own.  If you don't like the way I'm livin' you just leave this long-haired country boy alone.” It was off the second album from the CDB entitled “Fire on the Mountain.”When Will I Be Loved by Linda Ronstadt Bruce features Ronstadt doing a cover originally from the Everly Brothers in 1960.  While the original peaked at number 8, Ronstadt's cover would go to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song is a vocal trio between Ronstadt, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. Trampled Under Foot by Led Zeppelin Rob finishes the staff picks with a song John Paul Jones claims was inspired by Stevie Wonder's “Superstition.”  The lyrics were inspired by blues artist Robert Johnson's “Terraplane Blues” from  1936.  A Terraplane was a classic car that serves as a not-so-subtle source for sexual innuendo.  It is off the band's double album, “Physical Graffiti.”  COMEDY TRACK:Bertha Butt Boogie by The Jimmy Castor Bunch This funk novelty track went to number 16 on the US pop chart and number 22 on the US R&B chart.

Synopsis On this date in 1813, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony was played for the first time in Vienna. The occasion was a benefit concert in honor of the Austrian and Bavarian soldiers who had died fighting Napoleon, with the concert's proceeds donated to their widows and orphans. At its first rehearsal, some of the musicians found the part writing of the new work intimidating. A friend of Beethoven's who sat in on rehearsals later recalled: "the violin players refused to play a passage and rebuked [Beethoven] for writing difficulties that were incapable of performance. But Beethoven begged the gentlemen to take the parts home with them. If they were to practice it at home it would surely go. The next day the passage went excellently, and the gentlemen themselves seemed to rejoice that they had given Beethoven such pleasure." The slow movement of Beethoven's Symphony so pleased the Viennese audience at its premiere that it had to be encored. On today's date in 1980, a private tragedy also prompted music. On December 8th that year, ex-Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed outside his apartment in New York City. American composer Aaron Jay Kernis was then a student at the Manhattan School of Music, living not far from where Lennon was slain. The death moved Kernis to reshape elements of Lennon's song "Imagine" into an altogether new work for cello and piano titled "Meditation (in memory of John Lennon)." Attorney Jay Bergen represented Beatle John Lennon in court in a 1975 case with ties to the mafia! Jay chronicles the story and the case in his new book, “Lennon, the Mobster, and the Lawyer” (which is available now wherever you buy books). In 1975, Morris Levy, the mafia-connected owner of Roulette records, released “Roots,” an unauthorized version of a rock & roll oldies album that John Lennon was had been producing with Phil Spector. Morris Levy claimed John Lennon had verbally agreed to let Morris release and market the album on TV worldwide. When Morris released “Roots,” John Lennon's official label, Capitol/EMI quickly released the official “John Lennon Rock & Roll” album, and that resulted in Morris Levy filing two lawsuits against John Lennon and Capitol/EMI. Jay walks us through the case, the outcome, and how he ended up representing John in this little publicized trial. He recalls meeting John & Yoko, spending time with them during the trial, and what John Lennon was like on the witness stand. He also shares great stories about Yoko's input during the trial, the role her swami played, and why he was summoned to the Dakota to meet with Yoko by herself.

Episode 12 of Season 2! Hosts Gratton Conwill, Matt Fields, and special guest Zain Hashmat discuss The Holy Mountain (1973). Day 12 The Holy Mountain 1hr 46m The Holy Mountain was released in May of 1973. It's a Mexican surrealist fantasy film directed and written by Alejandro Jodorowsky. The director also stars as the Alchemist. The story of the film was based on the novel Mount Analogue by René Daumal. However, since Daumal died before the novel was completed, Alejandro Jodorowsky had to create his own ending to the story. Intent on committing to the spiritual and psychedelic themes of the movie, Jodorowsky used several unorthodox activities to steep the cast into the material. Spiritual exercises, yoga, communal living in the Director's home, consumption of LSD, and mushrooms were just some examples of what went on behind the scenes. Before filming began, Jodorowsky went a week without sleep under the guidance of a Japanese zen master. Once filming began, things did not calm down. A scene involving the cast jumping into the ocean went awry when the actors started drowning. Nothing of the scene was captured as the crew had to rescue the cast from the water. The film had an estimated budget of $750,000, which contradicts a popular claim that ex-Beatle John Lennon himself donated $1 million to the film's production. Due to the film's bizarre nature, unhinged production, and (for its time) controversial subject matter involving religion and violence, The Holy Mountain has a big cult following. For over 30 years The Holy Mountain was not officially available on home video in the united states, but thanks to modern boutique media companies and a staying interest in director Alejandro Jodorowsky, The Holy Mountain is now widely available for fans to see. The Holy Mountain has: 4.1 on Letterboxd 7.9/10 on IMDb 83% on rotten tomatoes 76% on Metacritic 84% on google 8.1 average CTS score From the creators of Giant Monster BS: Gratton Conwill and Matt Fields bring you Only In Amityville season 2: Escape from Amityville! With more than a decade in podcasting, travel, writing and research, and the study of history and science, Micah Hanks has more than just a passion for knowledge. His study of world history, culture and philosophy over the years have helped shape his nonpartisan outlook on current events, and always with a nod to the lessons history can teach us. Micah is a longtime advocate for scientific research into unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), more commonly known as “UFOs.” He is an affiliate member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU), as well as a frequent commentator and writer on the subject, and maintains an interest in the history, and possible scientific explanations for aspects of the phenomenon. After several years as a producer for iHeart Media (formerly Clear Channel Radio), Micah began podcasting in 2011. From the former ATF agent who became the whistle blower that brought attention to the “Operation Fast and Furious” scandal, to a psychologist who once consulted former Beatle John Lennon, Micah has interviewed a number of experts over the years in the fields of science, technology, philosophy, history, archaeology, and other disciplines. On the face of it, ex-Beatle John Lennon and Reggae star Peter Tosh were gunned down in very different circumstances. Lennon was shot by an obsessed fan; Tosh a victim of 1980s Jamaican gun culture. On closer examination, however, their deaths have more in common than first meets the eye, not least because they were both peace-loving men who wanted mankind to live in harmony. Jacques Morrell and Simon Ford unpack the archives and their vinyl collections in this investigation.Featuring the voices of C.C. Anderson, Tim Bryn Smith and Denroy Shakespeare. The Six O'clock Knock is a Psycho Killer production.Transcript[Music] This podcast contains descriptions of death and violence that some listeners may find upsetting. Hello and welcome to the Six O'clock Knock the true crime podcast that takes a fresh look at murder I'm Simon Ford a journalist and broadcaster with 20 odd years in the business and I'm Jacques Morrell 30 years of British police officer and detective I spent many an hour on the press benches of various courts reporting on the kind of crimes that Jacques spent his career detecting now the English legal system has influenced many others around the world our system of common law or case law originated in the practices of the courts of the English kings following the Norman conquest in 1066 and to be clear Scotland wasn't conquered by the Normans which is why the Scottish legal system is different from the one in England and wales absolutely and comparisons as the saying goes are odious now the British empire imposed that English legal system on its far-flung colonies many of which retained the common law system today these systems give great weight to judicial precedent today of course there's no British empire but one third of the world's population lives in common law jurisdictions including Jamaica and that other former colony the united states of America [Music] Jamaica declared its independence from Britain in 1962 but remained a member of the commonwealth and it's to Jamaica that we are heading today then we'll look at a second case also from over the Atlantic both cases are very different but both involve the murder of prominent musical artists and both involve firearms our main focus is that of the murder of Winston Hubert McIntosh better known as Peter Tosh Jamaican reggae artist [Music] Peter Tosh was the baritone who left Bob Marley and the Wailers went solo and worked with the Rolling Stones among others the one who learned how to ride a unicycle and rode onto the stage on it that's him his other claim to fame he was shot and killed in 1987. We'll compare his murder to the fatal shooting of John Winston Lennon British musician founder member of the Beatles shot and killed seven years earlier in 1980. I suppose everyone remembers where they were when a celebrity gets murdered I'll be honest though Peter Tosh was less well known in our household but John Lennon now his murder took place on the evening of Monday the 8th of December 1980 in New York five hours behind London time so I woke up to the news on Tuesday the ninth now my dad had bought a colour tv in time for Christmas and John Lennon's murder was one of the first stories I saw in colour on the tv news John Lennon is dead shot several times by a young American as he was going into his home in New York the former Beatle who was 40 was returning home from a recording studio with his wife Yoko Ono when he was murdered it took a few days for the enormity of what had happened to sink in the significance of the talent that had been lost but there was a school assembly I remember where John Lennon's music was played in tribute and even some of the teachers were moved to tears it was one of those moments that made me want to record significant events and I guess set me on the path to becoming a journalist now I know very little about Peter Tosh but you're a fan aren't you Jacques tell me something about the man and his music well from what I know his childhood was one of survival he was abandoned by his parents and moved around between relatives now this was rural Jamaica and when his aunt died he moved to trench town in Kingston aged about 15. his introduction to music was amazing though he used to sit and watch a man playing guitar in the street now this man only played the one tune but Tosh was mesmerized after seeing him many times Tosh picked up the guitar and played the song back to the man the man asked him who taught him to play guitar and Tosh replied you have he'd learned by watching Tosh then learned some singing skills from a guy who gave free music lessons to young people and it was there he met Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer who were doing the same thing and as they say the rest is history that's fascinating and do you recall where you were when the news of these deaths was reported yes and no I was working full-time in 1987 and while I have some Peter Tosh records at home I don't remember where I was when news of his death broke I guess as a young cop working shifts I was just too busy to follow the news I can remember clearly when the news of Lennon's death happened the difference is that I was 17 years old in 1980 and there's something about teenage memories that seem stronger isn't there that's very true yeah I'd agree with that my memory of the first colour tv and the teachers in tears that kind of thing it's just frozen there somehow that moment crystallized and when I think about it it's as though I'm back in my tiny box of a bedroom it's just big enough for a single bed wardrobe a chair and a bedside cabinet I had a radio alarm clock I can picture it now it had an illuminated red digital display classic seventies I was listening to the morning show on radio one the DJ I think was Mike Reed and I could hear something different in his voice he was emotional and struggling for words I knew then how much of a big deal it was as the whole show was a news item with a few John Lennon songs for those people who do not know and it may have just joined us John Lennon died earlier today as the result of what seems to be one of those idiotic and pointless attacks by someone who probably didn't even know him he was shot dead in New York about four o'clock GMT yes I remember now we had the BBC news on in the kitchen and John Lennon was shot four times in the back his killer Mark David Chapman waited for the police to arrive and immediately admitted what he'd done well Peter Tosh was killed on the 11th of September 1987. he was shot during a robbery at his home in Kingston Jamaica his killers though didn't hang around for the police to arrive they were arrested later one man was convicted of the crime Dennis Lobben although he still maintains his innocence now these murders were seven years apart and happened in very different circumstances the only connection being both were musicians and both were shot in cold blood and both men shared the same full name of Winston don't forget yes that's an interesting coincidence isn't it I wonder if it's significant the motive for their killings is very different while their respective killers are still in jail what would have happened to them if their victims had not been famous artists almost certainly released I guess what we also want to do is to expand on the detail and then consider whether there's a similarity in the mindset of the killers the killers of both Peter Tosh and John Lennon I guess it's hard for us in the UK to appreciate the place that guns have in society in both the USA and Jamaica but the fact remains that nearly 40 years after the murders of John Lennon and Peter Tosh firearms are disproportionately used in killings in both countries the united states relationship with guns and gun control is well documented and according to a survey in 2017 Jamaica is one of the most armed countries per head of population in the world it seems so alien to us in the UK we have some of the strictest firearms controls in the world although to an extent some of that gun culture has spread over here Jamaican law allows firearm ownershipRead more: Strawberry Field and the original Victorian house were gifted to The Salvation Army in 1934. In 1936 it was opened as a children’s home for girls, later accepting boys. From then on, for nearly 70 years, it gave some of Liverpool’s most vulnerable children a refuge from turmoil and unhappiness – a safe, calm and spiritual home.Remaining true to the tradition of giving young people every best chance to succeed in life, Strawberry Field is perpetuating this legacy of care and support through a new training hub for young people with learning difficulties and other barriers to employment. Perhaps, if we just need to learn to decode them. David taught Jewish history in the Religious Studies Department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill from 1976 through 2000. His perspective on UFOs is that like religion, they are a human construct that has nothing to do with space travel or life on other planets. According to David, they are alien, but instead of coming from space, they come from within our own minds, our own souls, where there’s enough alienness to fill a universe. During this episode, David will offer insights into both sightings and abductions, including former Beatle John Lennon's sighting of a UFO over New York City in 1974.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles (White Album). Aside from all the great music on the album, it reminds all true crime fiends of The White Album's connection to Charles Manson and The Manson Family Murders. In the late 60's, cult leader Charles Manson told his followers that a race war was coming and The Family would have to hide in a secret underground city. Then, when the war was over, The Family would return to the surface and rule the world. But what proof did Charlie have of this prophecy? He cited two main sources: The Bible and The Beatles! Tonight Eric will break down the messages Manson allegedly took from both sources and explain how they tied into The Manson Family's plan to commit murder and start the war that Manson called "Helter Skelter". We'll also hear from Charles Manson himself and we'll hear what Beatle John Lennon has to say about Manson and hidden messages in Beatles music. spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music By Occultic Overtones

Today's Guest: Keith Elliot Greenberg, rock historian, December 8, 1980: The Day John Lennon Died Certain days in all of our lives we can’t help but remember. I was sitting at my desk here in St. Petersburg with “The Today Show” on in the background when the first plane flew into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. I was in my kitchen in Gainesville, Florida, on March 5, 1982, when my friend Jim Doten called from a pay phone to say he just heard that John Belushi died. Jim was on his way up from Miami for a visit with a cooler full of fresh shrimp and beer to boil them in. And I was in another Gainesville apartment, 15 months earlier, on December 8, 1980,studying in my bedroom, on December 8, 1980, when one of my roommates, Andy Anderson, opened the door and said, “Hey, your guy died!” Order 'The John Lennon Collection,' available from Amazon.com by clicking on the CD cover above. I didn’t know what the hell he was talking about. “My guy?” Tom Seaver died? Order 'December 8, 1980: The Day John Lennon Died' by Keith Elliot Greenberg, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above. For some reason, Andy connected me with John Lennon when the Monday Night Football game that he and our third roommate, Cesar Quintana, was interrupted by Howard Cosell’s announcement that former Beatle John Lennon had been shot outside his home in New York City. My only connection to John Lennon was that we shared a birthday, October 9. Of course, Lennon was born in 1940; I came along 20 years later. And my first Beatles album, Meet the Beatles, was actually the second LP my parents bought for me at our neighborhood drug store in Somerset, NJ. The first was The Monkees' Headquarters. I still have both original discs. KEITH ELLIOT GREENBERG podcast excerpt: "John Lennon could have lived anywhere in the world. He chose to live in New York... The police officer who was the first on the scene (of the murder) covered the Beatles when they came to Shea Stadium in 1965, not knowing that night, December 8, 1980, that John Lennon would be another part of his story."  Like most people, I was shocked and horrified that some jackass named Mark David Chapman had taken Lennon away from us. It was incredibly wrong. Thirty years later, I can’t say I was eager to read a book that might, potentially, glorify Chapman. But that’s not the book that Keith Elliot Greenberg wrote. December 8, 1980: The Day John Lennon Died is an amazing dissection of people and events on that infamous day. It doesn’t justify Chapman’s action but it does explain what was in his head in the days and weeks leading up to the shooting. The detail and depth is remarkable, the kind of history you just can’t put down. Greenberg brings an interesting background to this project. In addition to writing books and magazine articles for Maxim, The Village Voice and The New York Observer, among others, he’s a producer for “America’s Most Wanted” on Fox.
