Classique !
Vi pratar också kort om: Vincent Price, Richard Matheson, Peter Lorre, Jack Nicholson, Boris Karloff, Charles Beaumont, Francis Ford Coppola, H.P Lovecraft, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Lon Chaney, Messiah of Evil, The Resurrected, Elisha Cook jr, Yog Sothoth, Cthulhu, Necronomicon, Arkham, Shadow over Innsmouth, Debra Paget, Leo Gordon och Freud. Mycket nöje!
"Hell House" by Richard Matheson is an American classic of horror. Published in 1971, Hell House is a product of the end of the 60's and the questioning of the ideals of the previous two decades. It is horrific, graphic, scandelous, gory, and just generally an great scary tale. Debauchery, possession, cannibalism. Really, what more could you ask? Th bourbon on this episode is Cream of Kentucky, a long standing world famous label that has ties with the artist Norman Rockwell. If you would like to see some of the advertizing Rockwell did for the label back in the day, you can find those easily with a quick search of Norman Rockwell and Cream of Kentucky. Also? After a book like Hell House, you need a bourbon like Cream of Kentucky to sooth all the scratches and cuts to your psyche. WE HAVE MERCH! MERCH! MERCH! https://jamintshirts.com/collections/beards-books-bourbon

Your deadicated hosts enjoy this feature reel of Vincent Price in TALES OF TERROR (1962), a horror anthology from Roger Corman! Unfortunately, writer Richard Matheson stumbles in adapting Edgar Allan Poe's short stories "Morella," "The Black Cat," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." But does that matter when Price, Peter Lorre, and Basil Rathbone get to come together? Context setting 00:00; Synopsis 45:15; Discussion 59:17; Ranking 1:21:46
Las canciones son de los grupos ingleses The Police, "Espíritus en el mundo material" (Spirits In The Material World 1981) y The Psychedelic Furs, "El fantasma en ti" (The Ghost In You 1984).

Richard Matheson's I Am Legend is often called the first modern vampire novel. Preceding Salem's Lot by 21 years, the story follows a would-be scientist named Robert Neville who also happens to be the last man on Earth. Tormented by the memory of his wife's horrific transformation, not to mention the hordes of vampires trying to break through his heavily fortified home, Neville spends his days systematically euthanizing the undead and searching in vain for a sustainable cure. But a surprising discovery throws his efforts into question while destabilizing his lonely life. In the latest episode of Bloody FM's The Losers' Club podcast, co-hosts Jenn Adams, Mac Gerber, Ashley Casseday, and Dan Caffrey revisit this seminal text as they explore the titles mentioned in Stephen King's Danse Macabre. Is Neville a likable protagonist? Do we understand Matheson's musings on germs? Why do adaptations always skew towards zombies and why does that ending pack such a punch? They'll answer these questions and more while discussing Matheson's larger body of work and incomparable contributions to the horror genre. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Kevin and Matthew McManus (American Vandal, Cobra Kai, Redux Redux) jump in the passenger seat for a revving chat about Steven Spielberg's Duel. Shot in 10 days, this 1971 TV movie was Spielberg's first real introduction to Hollywood. It's an adaptation of a Richard Matheson short story that follows a spineless city boy as he's tormented by a faceless truck driver that prowls the rural roads outside of Los Angeles. Part Hitchcock, part '70s weirdo Spielberg, there's a good argument that without Duel being as good as it was Spielberg may not have broken out as quickly as he did. The McManus Brothers help your humble host break down the movie, talk about our favorite sequences, and point out some of the more eye-catching visual storytelling moments. Their latest film, Redux Redux, which follows a mother that jumps realities so she can torment her daughter's murderer over and over again, can be seen in theaters this Friday, February 20th.

They unpack sleepy Y2K memories, compare psychic kids across late-90s cinema, debate the film's surprisingly heavy themes, and revisit that unforgettable final act. Along the way, you'll hear character analysis, fandom hot takes, production facts, and plenty of Jackie-and-Danielle banter, including their love-hate relationship with the movie's whiny wife, spooky sister-in-law, and OJ-obsessed Tom. Whether you're rewatching the film or discovering it for the first time, this episode brings all the creepy, funny, nostalgic vibes straight from your old Blockbuster nights. If you enjoy the show, don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe! With Jaws now an official film franchise, Universal and its producers still wanted more. But they then did an unforeseen, seemingly desperate move of producing a script done by John Hughes and the rest of the National Lampoon clan called Jaws 3 People Nothing. Original producers Richard Zanuck and Robert Brown were allegedly onboard to do the film. But supposedly, original director Steven Spielberg came in and said that if the script was made, he was going to leave Universal forever. So, Brown and Zanuck sold their rights to Alan Greenspan, who then got author and frequent Twilight Zone scribe Richard Matheson to come in and once again bring terrorizing sharks back to the beaches. But Greenspan got desperate after Matheson turned in a supposed unfilmable script and once again brought in Carl Gottlieb in and spice it up. What was eventually come up with was filmed and brought forth before audiences by longtime Jaws 2nd unit director Joe Alves in the 3D wrought Jaws 3D. How did the film eventually go 3D? How much coke was star Dennis Quaid on during filming? What the hell is recent Oscar winner Lou Gossett Jr doing here? And what did Garrett hold this one up as his favorite Jaws film while growing up? Soooo many questions, as well as what first time viewer Adam thinks of the film, are answered on this week's Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast! Next week, Jaws The Revenge!!

This week, we discuss the road rage thriller that launched Steven Spielberg's career, Duel.SPOILER ALERT We will be talking about this movie in its entirety, so if you plan on watching it, we strongly suggest you do so before listening to our takes. An ABC Movie of the Week, produced by Universal Television. Aired on November 13, 1971 (US TV) and later released theatrically internationally. Directed by Steven Spielberg (his feature-length debut). Screenplay by Richard Matheson, based on his own short story. Starring Dennis Weaver (David Mann). Cinematography by Jack A. Marta. Music by Billy Goldenberg.
From a doomed Arnold Schwarzenegger/Ridley Scott collaboration to Will Smith's blockbuster hit, the journey of I Am Legend to the screen is as dramatic as the apocalypse it depicts. Three wildly different film adaptations, a legendary unmade version; this story of humanity's end keeps haunting Hollywood. This is not the first adaptation of Richard Matheson's book I Am Legend. Vincent Price battled zombie-vampires in 1964's stark black-and-white thriller The Last Man on Earth. Charlton Heston faced off against intelligent albino mutants called "the Family" in 1971's, The Omega Man. Each adaptation changed the creatures, the cause of the apocalypse, and crucially, gave audiences hope where the book offered none. With only 16 weeks of prep time, the Will Smith/Francis Lawrence version, this time named I Am Legend, spent years in development hell, and quickly went from a 40-page outline to a greenlit blockbuster, and to say it was chaotic is an understatement. Whole New York City blocks were closed off for filming, and one scene on the Brooklyn Bridge cost $5 million for just six nights of filming. One week into filming, director Francis Lawrence panicked and switched from practical makeup effects to CGI, extending post-production and inflating the budget. The team was still seeing finished visual effects shots just one month before the film's release, leading to last-minute reshoots to adjust the controversial ending.I Am Legend offers a unique blend of action and deep emotional storytelling, highlighting human isolation and the struggle for survival, with one of the bestest canine companions in film. Will Smith's performance as Dr. Robert Neville is both captivating and heartbreaking, showcasing his character's descent into loneliness, and the eerie depiction of an empty New York City resonates deeply in today's world, reflecting on themes of loss and solitude in a pandemic context. Jay of the Dead'sNew Horror Movies presents… the 55th Edition of the world's greatest Zombie Movie Podcast — Dead Man Still Walking, starring Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop! In this fascinating and unexpectedly subversive episode, Dr. Bishop welcomes special guest Jay of the Dead to explore the surprising horror history of “The Purple Smurfs” (yes, those Smurfs!) and their uncanny place in zombie canon. This is a must-listen for fans of zombie cinema. Likely inspired somewhat by Richard Matheson's novel, “I Am Legend” (1954) — yet before George Romero's shambling ghouls — there existed a little-known, infected-zombie narrative within the Belgian comic, Les Schtroumpfs Noirs (“The Black Smurfs”) from 1959, later wisely adapted for American audiences in 1963 as “The Purple Smurfs.” What seems like a simple children's story reveals shocking thematic roots in infection, rage, and apocalypse, complete with an urgent race to find a cure. Dr. Bishop herein declares, “Yes, the Purple Smurfs are zombies.” Also during Episode 166 here, Jay and Kyle dive deep into both the original comic source material and the adapted, 1981 TV episode — part of a Halloween special featuring “The Haunted Smurf” as well as “The Purple Smurfs” — unpacking how the latter's infection narrative even precedes films like “The Crazies” (1973), “Rabid” (1977), and “28 Days Later” (2002). They discuss the sociocultural implications, from 1980s “Satanic Panic” anxieties to the comic's troubling racial undertones in its early form. Jay playfully speculates whether the story serves as a bizarre, STD cautionary tale — and even debuts his first-ever Horror trailer for The Purple Smurfs (1981) TV episode! As for Dr. Bishop's favorite color? You just might find the answer buried somewhere in this delightfully twisted episode of Dead Man Still Walking. Gnap! Gnap! Andy Walsh and TJ Blackwell dive deep into the chilling world of Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" in this episode of the "All Reading Counts" series. They kick things off by highlighting how this novella is not just a classic vampire tale but a profound exploration of isolation and humanity's resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. With a relaxed vibe, they banter about their reading experiences and the novella's impact, noting how it's been adapted more times than a pair of jeans on laundry day. As they dissect the story's themes and Matheson's unique take on vampirism through a scientific lens, listeners get a front-row seat to the discussions that make literature so engaging. Expect a mix of witty remarks and thoughtful insights as they bring "I Am Legend" to life, proving that every form of literature counts in the quest for literacy!Takeaways: In this episode, the hosts dive deep into the significance of novellas, showcasing how these shorter literary forms can pack a punch and convey complex themes in a compact format. They highlight 'I Am Legend' as a groundbreaking work that not only influenced the horror genre but also served as a precursor to modern vampire and zombie narratives, reshaping how these creatures are perceived. The discussion touches on the nuances of the novella's themes, such as isolation, survival, and the psychological evolution of its protagonist, Robert Neville, amidst a world turned upside down by a vampire pandemic. Do you like spooky reads, or do you tend to steer clear of anything too creepy? In Episode 298, Jen and Ashley share our favorite books for the season, and we talk about what makes the perfect fall read. We start with our Bookish Check-in: Ashley is listening to Thorn Season (Bookshop.org | Libro.fm) by Kiera Cass, and Jen's revisiting Richard Matheson's I Am Legend (Bookshop.org | Libro.fm). Then we each bring a fall pick to the table: we share about Megan Bannen's The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy (Bookshop.org | Libro.fm) and Adriana Mather's How to Hang a Witch (Bookshop.org | Libro.fm). Both picks have ghosts, magic, and just enough spookiness to feel seasonal without being nightmare fuel. Just a reminder that if you purchase books using our affiliate links for Bookshop.org and Libro.fm, or if you shop on Bookshop using our Unabridgedpod shop, we get a small percentage of those sales, which supports us and the companies. "I'd like to report a truck driver that's been endangering my life."—David Mann (Dennis Weaver) in Duel. For the 20th TMR Movie Roundtable we are joined once again by our good friends Frank Johnson, Antony Rotunno, Mark Campbell and Oscar Campbell for a five-way discussion on the nerve-rattling 1971 thriller Duel, directed by the young Steven Spielberg and starring Dennis Weaver as Everyman pushed to the edge by a relentless, anonymous foe. David Mann (Dennis Weaver) is just an ordinary chap minding his own business and driving his beloved red Plymouth Valiant through the California desert, when a predatory monster of a smoke-spewing lorry (sorry, truck) inexplicably picks him as its unsuspecting prey. What starts as a routine car journey swiftly spirals into a heart-pounding game of cat-and-mouse with no rules and no escape. What's fuelling the truck's murderous pursuit? How does Spielberg turn a regular highway into a battlefield of primal fear? And what might this filmic clash of Man versus Machine have to say to us today? Join us as we examine the tension, explore the film's minimalist brilliance, and ask what "takeaways" might be gleaned from Spielberg's early TV/cinematic masterpiece.
