Welcome To Horror Presents: “The We Have Been Watching Invasion of Earth”. It's time for our semi-regular round up of all the entertainments we've been sticking into our brains for the past few weeks (and no laughing at the word “semi” please, we're all grown ups). This time round there's quite an international flavour as we discuss Soviet masterpiece “Viy” (1967); 2 movies from South Korea in modern classic “Train to Busan” (2016) and the “Tucker & Dale…” reimagining “Handsome Guys” (2024); fantastic Norwegian comedy “Troll Hunter” (2010); and the breathtaking 1922 Danish/Swedish silent documentary “Häxan” (and it's William Burroughs narrated 1968 version, “Witchcraft Through the Ages”). We also cover hit podcast “Broken Veil” (2025), 1982's “The Slumber Party Massacre”; “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” and “The Book of the Witch” (both 2024). Plus there are honourable mentions for “Battle Beyond the Stars”; and the anthology shows “Tales of Unease” and “Armchair Thriller”. There should be no need to prep for this ep, but listeners beware, as here be (possible) spoilers and (definite) swearing. Join us!

This week on Remainders, we take a look at witchcraft and satanic orgies with the 1922 silent film classic Haxan, or Witchcraft Through the Ages. As we settle into our favorite October horror movies, Haxan is largely where it all started. Part historical document on witchcraft in the Middle Ages, part fictionalized account of how Satan and his wild tongue seduced women to witchcraft, ALL horror insanity. We also give praise to the Music Box Theatre with an account of their annual 24-hour horror marathon, the Music Box of Horrors. WebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Hey there friends and weirdos! To kick off the 300s era of It Gets Weird, we watched a "documentary" called Häxan, also referred to as Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages! A 1922 documentary-cum-film essay directed by Benjamin Christensen, Häxan blends historical fact with reenactments of historical fiction using witchcraft and the occult. It seems to have something interesting to say about witches... Do the Weird Boys enjoy this Criterion classic? Listen and find out!

Häxan ([ˈhɛksan], "The Witch"; Danish: Heksen; English: The Witches; released in the US in 1968 as Witchcraft Through the Ages) is a 1922 silent horror essay film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Consisting partly of documentary-style storytelling as well as dramatized narrative sequences, the film charts the historical roots and superstitions surrounding witchcraft, beginning in the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Based partly on Christensen's own study of the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, Häxan proposes that such witch hunts may have stemmed from misunderstandings of mental or neurological disorders, triggering mass hysteria. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/support

Episode 10 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Häxan (1922). Day 10 Häxan 1h 45m Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages is a Swedish silent film that premiered on September 18th 1922. It was written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. The title in Swedish translates to “The Witch.” Like the other silent films featured this season, the director stars in the film as well. Christensen appears as the Devil, Jesus Christ, and himself in Häxan. Many descriptions of Häxan struggle to place it in any genre. As an early film, Häxan was experimental in the way the material was approached. Informed by a 15th century book on hunting witches, Häxan was meant as a documentary with well produced dramatization scenes. What resulted was something that hasn't been replicated. Part essay film, part horror, Häxan is a product of the silent era as it conforms to none of the filmmaking rules we associate with contemporary cinema. At the time of its production, Häxan was the most expensive film produced in any Scandinavian country. Filmed entirely in Denmark, Häxan was shot both indoors and at night, which was uncommon for films of this era. As a result of the emulsion of the film stock used, the blue of many of the actors' eyes did not register, giving them a unique appearance. Originally, Häxan was intended to be the first film in a trilogy, however Director Benjamin Christensen never made the sequels. After falling into the public domain, Häxan became widely available, albeit usually in poor quality. But the result was Häxan becoming one of the most prevalent silent horror films remembered by movie fans. Among its contemporary fans is the acclaimed horror and effects film director Guillermo del Toro and, unsurprisingly, Robert Eggers. With a place in “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die” and the Criterion Collection, Haxan enjoys an impressive status as a celebrated and respected piece of film history. From the creators of Giant Monster BS: Gratton Conwill and Matt Fields bring you Only In Amityville season 2: Escape from Amityville!
