Häxan - "Witchcraft with Thunder!"This week we tackle a classic horror film that gives us a comprehensive history of witchcraft through the ages - HÄXAN (1922). Equal parts documentary, historical reenactment and social commentary on the modern era...that feels still eerily relevant 100 years later. We highly recommend this wonderful film!We hope you enjoy diving into the history of witchcraft with us this week!Support the show
Overview The video script discusses the 1922 Swedish silent film ‘Haxan,' directed by Benjamin Christensen. The film, a documentary-style recreation, explores themes of witchcraft and mental illness and is noted for its impressive production quality and vivid imagery. It was controversial at release due to scenes of torture, nudity, and anti-clericalism, leading to bans in […] The post Häxan – Side Dish 2 appeared first on Horror Lasagna.

Happy Halloween! We're dropping this week's episode two days early to chime in on the spooky holiday fun. Dr Ethan Lyon gets all devilish with us as we check out Haxan (1922), directed by Benjamin Christensen, and then Beyond the Door (1974), directed by Ovidio Assonitis. In our usual roundabout way, our discussion of these films leads us to some unexpected questions such as: Is Halloween America's greatest ever export? Is the hyrax nature's sleaziest rodent? Are Beatrix Potter's idyllic stories actually a horrifying animal dystopia in disguise? And last but not least, how advisable is it to play wind instruments through your nose? It's not really possible to spoil Haxan as it doesn't have a conventional plot, but we will call out Spoiler Territory for Beyond the Door. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:51:18 mark to avoid spoilers. Want to get in touch? Wiz RECOMMENDS Haxan: Witchcraft Through The Ages More of a visual essay than a documentary, Häxan can be best described as a college course that was performed by a theater troupe and directed by the professor. In fact, the film is very academic: it cites sources in the movie while showing pictures like a visual dissertation. Honestly, it this was a film that was made today, it would feel very dry and clinical. And yet, it's fascinating to watch. Häxan tells an academic timeline about witchcraft and how it's interpreted in specific times. At first, I was thinking it was going to be a Reefer Madness but with witches, but it actually shows more about the bad side of the witch hunts and the people it brutalized. Visuals in some of the scenes are actually very well done. The music that's accompanied with the Criterion Collection version of the film is excellent. And on top of that, the theories that Christensen toys with at the end are strangely intelligent, almost prescient. Honestly, the best way to think about Häxan as a TV docu-series like Unsolved Mysteries or America's Most Wanted but about witchcraft. It's strange: I was ready to laugh about this film, but I ended up being sort of mesmerized by it.

EPISODE #81 Off To The Witch returns tonight with a brand new episode! The devil has been a portrait in cinema from its inception. Beginning with the magic of the silent era - with movies like Benjamin Christensen's Haxan and the Georges Melies “Faust In Hell” to Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby and William Friedkin's the Exorcist. As it's displayed in art it also mirrors real life. Many of the demonic and devilish displays are based on true accounts.Join me as I explore The Devil In Cinema with an authentic, practicing witch, Krista Brown.Join us tonight (beginning at 8:00 pm ET) New episodes of Off To The Witch premiere every Wednesday night at 8:00pm ET.Off To The Witch can be found on all major podcast platforms as well as my YouTube channel (at offtothewitch)@highlight#offtothewitch #christophergaretano #devil #witch #cinema #horror
We wrap up this week's dual episodes on The Haxan Cloak with Mark going deep into the Returnal soundtrack, doing a quick drive-by on the Beef soundtrack, touching on a couple of other movie scores, before taking Excavation on in its entirety. Due to the hype around Excavation when it came out, we go on quite the tangent about PR in music. We discuss how there seemed to be very little in the way of critical feedback on this album, and in doing so we explore whether or not this album actually has a narrative at all, or if the narrative simply exists because it was created by the press to give the media something to hang its hat on when talking about the album. We're not saying we start to question the meaning of music, but we do get damn close to it.
Diving deep into the discography of R.E.M. rapidly turned into a sorta of existential torture, particularly as we got towards the end of their career. So what did we decide to follow it up with? A journey into what existential despair may ACTUALLY sound like with The Haxan Cloak. Under the guise of The Haxah Cloak, Bobby Krilc has only released two albums, three EPs and, more recently, a single. In this episode we take a brief look at the first, self titled, Haxan Cloak record and those EPs, before turning our attention to Bobby's soundtrack work. A fair more eclectic and overall less abyssal oeuvre. In part one we cover a selection of his output up until the soundtrack of the (frankly stunning) game Returnal.
We're hanging out with Dustin Howard, this week, making up for the botched recording from earlier this month. Dustin is scoring Haxan at Circle Cinema on 12/21, and putting on cool shows and events at Noise Town Tulsa. We talk about the strengths of sci-fi, the changing nature of humor, and where to stream a bunch of cool movies. We check out the trailers for Ted (the series) and Furiosa (the movie.) Plus, whether you should read the book or watch the movie first. Answer: it depends.
In this episode of The Movie Loot, me and filmmaker Todd Sullivan share our long overdue loot of werewolves, witches, demons, bad couples, and bad films. It took us a while, but here it is. Original Air Date: Monday 30 October, 9 pm Eastern Description: This week, in honor of the spooky season, you will find your friends in podcasting and broadcasting in fine form, discussing one of Dean's favorite horror films, the Swedish silent classic Haxan, and because nothing is spookier it seems than AI, they also discuss the recent sci-fi epic The Creator, and this summer's Mission: Impossible entry. Phil predicted what he think is going to happen in the coming hours/days regarding the actors' strike, and he and Dean take time to remember an iconic sitcom star from the 1970s, an iconic sitcom star of the 1990s, a star of TV's "Lost in Space", a groundbreaking, glass-ceiling shattering disc jockey, an action movie legend, and the man who created Nevada's third most popular gambling and resort destination.
Welcome back to more Season of the Witch! Rather than the song, this time we're talking about Haxan Witchcraft Through the Ages on its 101st anniversary! Why did we choose 101 instead of 100? There is a very good reason behind that, based on numerology, phases of the moon, and that we dropped the ball on it last year. But this year we're getting into witches! Pour your favorite potion and enjoy! Next week's episode is a Happy Halloween episode, along with the spooky story of Faithful Johnny. We're keeping it spooky…ish and also discussing our OLDEST film this season by bringing you an episode on “Haxan”. Join Britt, Joey, & Adam as they discuss the inventive filmmaking of Benjamin Christensen, the glorious set design, and the horrifying realization that maybe we haven't come as far as we think since the days of witch trials. Also, this week Adam recommends “Stir of Echoes” (available on Hoopla & Tubi), Joey recommends “The Blair Witch Project” (available on Paramount+ & Freevee) – go check out that old 1001 by 1 episode, and Britt recommends “Pyewacket” (available on Prime & Tubi). Welcome back to more Halloween spookiness at the Manor! This episode we talk about that most glorious of folk horror movie's "The Wicker Man." So grab your pint and pipe, get ready to dance with the landlord's daughter, and enjoy! Next week's episode is about the witchy movie Haxan. Which witch? This week, Cody and Matt conjure some tongue-wagging devils and dive into this staple of scary Swedish cinema. They discuss the influential characterizations of Hell and the damned, the horrors of those accused of witchcraft, and the special effects mastery on full display. It goes without saying at this point that the boys get wildly distracted by axe milking, kissing the Devil's behind, and the attractiveness of a monk who double fists turkey legs. Bring that cauldron to boil and join these couple of Häx as they cackle their way through a century old tale! Thanks for listening!Instagram/Twitter: @nighthowlspod
On today's episode of Rhein's Reviews I discuss what promises to be the oldest film I review this month!
This week, the Dames fill a podcast blindspot and talk all about witches, focusing on Haxan, The Witches of Eastwick, and The Witch. These films encompass feminism, patriarchal fears, justifiable homicide, cool curses, and Jack Nicholson's tiny tiny ponytail.
This week Tim Meyer and I discuss Benjamin Christensen's silent documentary/essay horror film from 1922!! That's right, we're kicking off October with a silent horror film. The imagery, the set design, the unconventional story structure all lead to this being the perfect way to kick off spooky season! We also discuss Tim's new novella, Rainbow Filth recently published from Ghoulish Books. Join us in the Confessional! Follow Tim here Purchase Rainbow Filth here
This week, Eric and Josh are joined by a couple of members of the band Death Ships to discuss their upcoming Silent Film / Live Band presentation of Nosferatu! They also chat about: The Cat And The Canary, Haxan, Beastie Boys, intermissions, lawn darts, Neil Breen, and more! Plus, they mention the movies screening from Friday October 6 - Thursday October 12: Scrapper, Barbie, The Room, The Thing, Saturday Night Sinema, and The Guardian!

What film encompasses torture, blasphemy, sacrifice, witchcraft, and demons? We're going back to the early 20th century to discuss the silent film, Haxan. Pointy tongues and self flagellation are abound in this episode of Under the Pendulum.
Since we first encountered Lars von Trier with The Element of Crime way back at Spine 80, he is a director who we - Pat especially - look forward to as the Criterion Collection trickles out his work. Antichrist, however, was a film we were both cautious about, knowing what little we did about it. Ultimately, the film is sort of a mix between Salo and Haxan, and like Salo it is a film that I am glad I watched but will never recommend to anyone. Like Salo, Antichrist is steeped in sexual and gender-based violence, some of it graphically self-inflicted. You should not watch the film without knowing that is coming. But still, it is a fascinating look at depression and grief. And this is one of my favorite episodes as of late, and we've watched a lot of good movies lately.
We’re going silent for the next month! (sorry for the practical joke) Beginning next week, we’ll be releasing a series of 4 episodes where we’ll be reviewing silent horror movies from the 1920’s. They are; The Penalty (1920), The Phantom Carriage (1921), Haxan (1922), and A Page of Madness (1926) We hope you’ll join us

Happy Halloween, girls and ghouls and freaks! Candace and Ariel have been churning the midnight butter, as the saying goes, and working to bring you our third annual Vintage Halloween. This year we're showing love to pre 1970's horror with artist, musician, and sound wizard Pat Spurlock (aka Phantom Stranger, the Boogeyman, our technical and emotional support, etc) about German expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), early documentary and horror Bible Häxan (1922), and lovably strange sequel to Cat People, The Curse of the Cat People (1944). A fantastic triple feature (though we don't recommend actually watching all these movies in a row, if only because of the eye strain), thoughtful, dreamlike or nightmarelike, depending on who you ask, visually striking in many varied ways, and deeply interested in the workings of the human mind. Plus there's a freaky little devil guy who's celebrating his 100 year anniversary of freaking people out. Do it for him! Our guest, Pat Spurlock, is the pod's number one supporter and friend, but he's also got a ton of his own stuff going on. You can check out his record store here; his record label, Phantom Stranger Records, here, and here; and artwork here. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Our drive for intersectionality aligns well with the Morbidly Beautiful ethos. We love that MB is a nonprofit that gives back to the horror community, and are thrilled to be a part of the network! Show now also streaming on morbidlybeautiful.com! "Häxan" is probably one of most spookiest/horror films of the day and that time is 1922. Imagine watching this film at that time? That's what I briefly explore in this episode. It's a documentary-style film that informs us witchcraft since Middle Ages until modern times at that time. I dig it because of how they depict information. The production design did a great job bringing devil to life and demons, creating sabbath scenes, it's great. Check it out!
