We kick off 2024 with a New Year's Eve carol. Victor Sjöström's The Phantom Carriage (1921) exists in the same genre as A Christmas Carol or It's a Wonderful Life, but unfortunately its only social message is one of temperance from alcohol. But what The Phantom Carriage lacks in intriguing plot it more than makes up for in innovative special effects, with its ghostly characters fully inhabiting a three dimensional world. With the technical limitations of cameras at the time, this movie is all the more amazing. No wonder Bergman loved it so much.

It's time to rejoin the October Halloween horror action, in progress, with part two of the 17th Annual A-Z of Horror Festival! If you could choose three people to hang out and have dinner with during the spooky season, Edgar Allan Poe, Roger Corman and Vincent Price would probably be ideal. Unless, of course, everything is literally crumbling down around you. Which certainly seems to be the case with the House of Usher (1960). Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi might take exception with not being invited, but they have their own problems to contend with in The Invisible Ray (1936). And it's sad, but Jennifer (1978) may not be an ideal guest for everyone, especially if she arrives with two handfuls of serpents. Or a giant snake emerges and bites someone's head off. That's probably going to ruin the evening. Poor Paul Bartel would enjoy a fine evening of dining, but he's obligated to attend the dreadful Killer Party (1986). Princess Lola, and her reluctant date, regret to inform you that they have a night of dancing and torture, which seems like a priority in The Loved Ones (2009). Should you invite Maddie? Well, it would probably be okay. Unless she starts having visions of death. And you see some creepy thing that seems to be running around backwards. If that happens, you may want to move to a different country, because things are about to get Malignant (2021)! You could invite Janet, but it's not her birthday. And let's be honest, she's not much fun unless someone is getting stabbed. Otherwise, her paranoia is kind of a Nightmare (1964). Holland and Niles probably wouldn't make the best guests. They won't wash their hands and wouldn't sit still long enough to actually eat or have a conversation. Plus, there seem to be a lot of unfortunate accidents while they're around, as evidenced in The Other (1972). And it's a good thing that it's not New Year's Eve. Not that you would necessarily anticipate anyone dying at the dinner party.  But if it happens, I suppose that you could always summon The Phantom Carriage (1921).

Episode 6 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss The Phantom Carriage (1921). Day 6 The Phantom Carriage 1hr 46m The Phantom Carriage was released on January first of 1921. It's a Swedish silent horror film directed and written by Victor Sjöström. In addition, Sjöström stars as the character David Holm in the film. The Phantom Carriage was based on a 1912 Swedish novel, Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! by Selma Lagerlöf. An anecdote about the preproduction of this movie involves Sjöström visiting author Selma Lagerlöf at her home and reading the entire screenplay aloud while acting out each part. Upon finishing, Sjöström collapsed into her couch from exhaustion. In response, Lagerlöf offered him something to drink as her blessing of his adaptation. Noteworthy for its special effects, The Phantom Carriage had a lengthy post production of five months which was very unusual for the time. The double exposures used throughout the film were all achieved in camera, as optical printing technology would not be available until the 1930's. This means that each time they shot a scene, the camera had to be hand cranked at precisely the same speed during both of the separate exposures. This movie's legacy today is found in its influences on directors Ingmar Bergman and Stanley Kubrick. Bergman would even go as far as casting Victor Sjöström in his 1957 drama, Wild Strawberries. Another notable figure in film history who enjoyed this movie was Charlie Chaplin who once called this movie the best film ever made, although he was likely referring to the heavily edited version released in the U.S. in 1922. The Phantom Carriage has: 4.0 on Letterboxd 8.1/10 on IMDb 100% on rotten tomatoes 92% on google 8.83 average CTS score From the creators of Giant Monster BS: Gratton Conwill and Matt Fields bring you Only In Amityville season 2: Escape from Amityville! From Michael Tapper, 1001 Movies you Must See Before You Die: "The Phantom Carriage not only cemented the fame of director-screenwriter-actor Victor Sjostrom and Swedish silent cinema, but also had a well-documented, artistic influence on many great directors and producers.  The best-known element of the film is the representation of the spiritual world as a tormented limbo between heaven and earth.  The scene in which the protagonist - the hateful and self-destructive alcoholic David Holm (Sjostrom)  - wakes up at the chime of midnight on New Year's Eve only to stare at his own corpse, knowing that he is condemned to hell, is one of the most quoted scenes in cinema history. "Made in a simple but time-consuming and methodically staged series of double exposures, the filmmaker, his photographer, and a lab manager created a three-dimensional illusion of a ghostly world that went beyond anything previously seen at the cinema.  More important, perhaps, was the film's complex but readily accessible narration via a series of flashbacks - and even flashbacks within flashbacks - that elevated this gritty tale of poverty and degradation to poetic excellence. "Looking back at Sjostrom's career, The Phantom Carriage is a theological and philosophical extension of the social themes introduced in his controversial breakthrough Ingeborg Holm (1913).  Both films depict the step-by-step destruction of human dignity in a cold and heartless society, driving its victims into brutality and insanity.  The connection is stressed by the presence of Hilda Borgstrom, unforgettable as Ingeborg Holm and now in the role of the tortured wife - another desperate Mrs. Holm.  She is yet again playing a compassionate but poor mother on her way to suicide or a life in the mental asylum. "The religious naivete at the heart of Selma Lagerlof's faithfully adapted novel might draw occasional laughter from a secular audience some eighty years later, but the subdued, 'realist' acting and the dark fate of the main characters - which almost comes to its logical conclusion, save for a melodramatic finale - never fails to impress." First up, we talk about the news, as the 116th Congress officially convened for the first time in the midst of a grueling federal shutdown. Then it’s on to go back to the work of Victor Sjolstrom with his landmark silent horror-drama, The Phantom Carriage! The Lads chat about its now-alien seeming morality, it’s incredible practical effects, and Frank rants about how shitty CGI looks in contrast. Then the lads chat about Brian Eno’s ambient masterpiece Another Green World, and talk about the transformative effect it had on Eno’s career and their own lives. Last it’s on to Frasier S1E13 Guess Who’s Coming To Breakfast, where Martin fucks a neighbor, Frasier is smarmy, and Niles is once again a creep! Frank is sick! Justin screams in despair!
