Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2021 52:53

Why Bring a Psychic Medium on a Business Podcast is more about the need to truly understand how we make decisions and take action in our business. The little voice kicks in and we make decisions based on things out of our control at times. Listening to our inner self, our spirit guide, god, these are the higher vibrational universe guiding us on our path. Jennifer Hall joins us and we talk all about that gravitational pull that we inherently have towards the direction we are meant to be going in. Incorporating spirit is inherent whether we know it or not. Spirituality broadly means relinquishing a certain amount of responsibility for your own life and believing that there is something bigger at play. It is the belief that you are guided at least in part by a higher power. But it doesn't require you to follow a specific religion, just to be open-minded about life beyond earth. Sometimes, we don't even realize we're following a spiritual path because it's so engrained in our culture. For instance, the horoscopes we might read in the newspaper on our commute to work and take comfort in, because we've been told we're going to have a great day or that good fortune is coming our way. We are going to discuss how to start a podcast in 2021 and tell you about the reasons why having a podcast in 2021 is where you want to be if you've never met us before. Why would somebody start a podcast in 2021? Doesn't everybody have a podcast these days? That's true. But you should also start the podcast because it's just another way for you to get noticed using the podcast platform, either online, Spotify, Apple Podcast or other people, clients and other photographers can find you and that just grows your network. What's really cool to you about starting a podcast is being able to interview people that perhaps you never thought you would ever be able to talk to you. Imagine being able to interview your idol, which we've been able to do on our podcast more and more than once. Yeah, more than once. It's been so amazing to be able to connect with people on a different level podcast just kind of get you in the door. If you are somebody who is really passionate about what you do, this is such an amazing tool for you and it's never too late. It's just like starting a YouTube channel or a blog. I think that if you are passionate about what you do, then you definitely need to consider doing a podcast because it's another avenue for your potential clients to get to know you. You never know who's listening, which is the beautiful thing about podcasts. One of the first things you need to do to start a podcast is to brainstorm what it is, what niche you're going to be going into with the podcast. Anyone that thinks they're going to talk to every single person on their podcast really ends up talking to nobody. Just find one specific thing that you really want to talk about. For example, we use Path To Business and we interview people about their journey from where they started to now being entrepreneurs. We relate to them on certain things because every entrepreneur always goes through the same kind of steps. You start a business and then you get super busy and you start hiring. There's so many things that are relatable between different businesses, and you just need to find the thing that makes you stand out. And if you what you want to do is just give value constantly. You just have to make sure that you're giving the audience or whoever is listening something to keep them interested. On our podcast, we give little insights and tips on our own business as well. That's the beauty of a podcast or running your own business in general. You can make the rules up as you go. There really is limitless potential or opportunities for you to use your podcast. So if you start doing a season talking about your wedding photography business and then you want to talk a little bit more about just weddings in general. Niching is really important, but don't feel like you have to pick a specific topic and stick with it forever. I know that that was something that I struggled with. I wanted to be about what I want to talk about. At first it was just me doing the podcast and now I've actually added Luc onto the podcast because I found that we work better together and we were better as a team. It felt more like a chore doing it just by myself than doing it with him. You need to understand that your podcast can grow, it can change and evolve just like your business does.

Go Clean Co Interview Part 2 where Sarah joins Bethany for the second episode about growing her business. The approach that Sarah takes when it comes to growing her business is pure gold. Her vision of what and what she's been able to do in such a short amount of time is inspiring. The candid approach she takes to influencing and her digital growth is raw and real. The main advice that she gives is that you need to give more than you receive. If you want to see your business grow, you need to do things that align with you. Alignment with core values, building Sarah's business with a fall-forward approach is a pure win. Fear of failure isn't something that she lets get to her. People are living better, cleaner lives because of the work she does and that is important. I started following Mrs. Hinch and quickly became obsessed and perhaps is why Go Clean Co felt like Christmas day to me when I stumbled upon it! As much as I still love a good "Hinch" hack, it wasn't the same cleaning products. It never felt the same. I wasn't sure if I could ask her about other people who do what she does, but she did! She follows and adores Mrs. Hinch. Who couldn't, she's the sweetest and so real. Also, very funny just like Sarah. Scrubbing toilets and seeing gross things makes you want to laugh or cry right? There is no doubt in my mind that Jen is doing exactly what she should be doing and her talent is remarkable. She makes you feel completely at ease and is so good at what she does. Almost immediately my somewhat skeptical husband Luc was floored by how accurately she was able to describe us both. Pivot or Not this year has definitely challenged everyone to think about the word pivot when it comes to running your business. Luc joined me on the podcast to talk about how we are pivoting our business into 2021. We know that others are feeling like us, perhaps late to the pivot party of 2020. It almost feels like the only party that is happening in 2020, sadly. Understanding and action are very different things. The feeling overwhelms us about where to start can be such a struggle to get going. Trust us, you're not alone and we are here to tell you that it's not too late. I think there are different levels or different ways of pivoting. It doesn't mean that you're completely letting go of your current business. One of the big misconceptions that people have is that when you start to pivot that means that you're not doing your old business anymore. We want to make it very clear that that is not our intention. Acknowledging that 2020 almost robbed us in a way, of what we had planned and what we really wanted to achieve within our business. Memes that are going around where 2020 was supposed to be our year. Words that people were using when it came to 2020, that things were just going to be happening. This episode will leave you feeling very inspired. Careful thought processes and very well organized moving pieces are what make up the amazing team that Sophie has grown with the undoubting support of her husband. Similar to other guests we've had on the podcast, including myself, Sophie set her sights to become a prestigious lawyer. Something about this profession screams success. Or so she thought. Realizations quickly became true that Lawyers didn't quite have it all. At least not in the way she imagined it would be. Seeing this trend makes me wonder what kids learn in school to think that this is the career path for them. I know growing up I wanted to go to University and be the first to be a lawyer within our family. Understanding that needs to be what “society” perceives as successful can come at a much earlier age than one can imagine. Off-Season as a Wedding Photographer can be seen as a much-needed break for some industry pros. What if you could actually be missing out on valuable stuff while you're binging the latest series on Netflix? Most couples find themselves couped up inside during winter (this year more than ever). Proposals are still going ahead. Wedding slow season is inevitable, but what if you could actually be missing out on potential clients? Do you give in 100% to that break? Don't get me wrong, you totally deserve a break. It's actually a key ingredient to success. However, feelings of discouragement can fill the mind of even the most talented photographer during the off-season. The off-season is not uncommon, and sometimes, we have to remind ourselves that it's part of running a successful wedding photography business. Building a Business that's fulfilling is what most business owners aspire to do. Brodie O'Connor from Doree's Habit & Blondie Apparel joined me on the podcast to chat all about her story. She calls herself a "serial entrepreneur" and loves to dive deep into her businesses. Growing up she thrived while helping her parents run a local store and of course had lots of courage to do it herself. I think that entrepreneurs breathe that mentality and spirit into their children without even realizing it. This episode is filled with little goodies about opening up a store, or two. Building relationships has been a major factor in her success. Visiting Almonte for the first time Reminiscing about the first time I went into Dorees. I was doing a little visit of Almonte for a potential photoshoot and instantly fell in love with the vibe, the clothing, and the unique pieces. Growing up and having a family who loves to shop for clothes is engrained in me. The problem was that they always went for quantity over quality. As I have gotten older my mentality around this has shifted, slightly! Since I am a woman who's been from size 2 to size 14 over the years it's been a love-hate relationship at times. Luc will always ask me if I was nice to my clothes as I toss them on the floor when they don't fit the way I want! Building a Business that's Fulfilling You may be wondering what that even means. Whenever I think about my business I think it has to fulfill a couple of things. Your business needs to light a spark under you. That motivation and continuation especially when things WILL get tough is so important. Seeing the fruit of your labour and sometimes that comes in small forms or big ones. In the creative market perhaps getting a big commercial contract or wholesale opportunity with a larger store. These goals that seem impossible someday happen and come into fruition with dedication and keeping the business' heart true. Becoming a Makeup Artist and Growing a Company all at the same time is no easy feat. I met Klava at a styled wedding shoot in 2017 that we collaborated on together. She brought her fresh newborn baby girl and still managed to make our models look amazing of course. She had her in a carrier and still did her job and she's been inspiring me ever since. When I first started my business I used to strap little Philippe to my back and shoot a whole session. I didn't think much of it until I saw Klava doing it. Realizing how amazing we are as strong women who can still build a successful business all while raising children came at that moment. Travel, Change of Careers, Move across the Globe Even after all these years of working together at shoots and weddings I never truly got the chance to sit down one on one with Klava to hear her story. I knew it must be good because of how talented she is and how she's been able to scale her business so fast. Hearing the whole story is incredible and I am so happy to have had her on the show. Did you know she studied law and is a lawyer!? Who knew! Her passion has obviously changed paths and it's not the first time I hear of a creative entrepreneur who grew up wanting to be a lawyer, *cough* me! Klava actually became a lawyer and still changed, so it goes to show you can always make pivots and changes in your life. Building a Business with Balance One of the key messages Klava brings to her business and life is balance. Trying to find that perfect mix of work hard, play hard. Still really enjoys traveling and completely shuts off from the world most winters down south. It's never easy with small children but somehow she makes it look easy. People might think that about anyone running a business with kids. Even without them, it can be hard to not want to pour every ounce you have into your business because you love it. Knowing what I know now, creating distance, finding clarity, and getting some rest is actually a huge part of the success of any business. Well, one of those moments happens to be when COVID-19 hit. We were all packed and planning to go to the Ottawa Wedding Show for what was seemingly going to be an epic one. Still riding the wave from the last show, giving tickets away to potential couples, and building a whole new look for our booth. Finally feeling like we've found our groove within our business. We had reached out to all the amazing vendors who we wanted to work with and ordered new albums for the show. It was going to be our best one yet, or so we thought. We had already a pretty full 2020 season so we were excited to fill up the rest of 2021 since we were already half booked. Our couples for 2021 were ramping up and we had already booked all our engagement sessions in for the season. Talk about feeling organized and on top of the world. Our website was getting an overhaul, our social media was consistent, and we had built this epic workflow for our clients. On top of all this, we had just gotten back from vacation in Florida in January. We felt completely refreshed for the start of our season. The next thing we hear about is this “bad-flu” that was going around and that there wasn't really anything to worry about. We received calls from other vendors who were also attending the wedding show asking us what our plans were. Of course, we were going ahead? The show was still moving forward at this point, I didn't think much of it. Going out the next day I got my hair done and a fresh blowout, new outfit, and a manicure. I was completely set. After speaking with our decorator and florist, we were all packed and ready. The virus wasn't something that we thought would cancel the wedding show. Absolutely no doubt we needed Krista to talk to us about Starting an Invitation & Business with her expert skills. Not only is Krista an incredible person, but she's also a mom of two and works full-time. How she keeps everything going is a skill we all needed to know and I'm honoured to call her a friend. We've collaborated more than 30 times than I can count and she continues to floor myself and the industry with her creativity. Funny story is that I actually met Krista and her husband years ago when her team used to whoop my pickup teams butt at Ultimate Frisbee. This was, of course, pre-children and when we had time for sports and friends. After a night at The Rising Tide Society where she brought her newborn, I knew I needed to meet her. Having started my business while raising a tiny human, anyone who could do both was superheroes to me. A quick DM on Instagram, Krista kindly entertained me doing some fun branding photos of her and we, of course, hit it off. We laughed, added baileys to our coffees, and we met bi-weekly to chat all things business. It was a huge advantage for me in my business because she knew everyone and introduced me to all the people. To this day I am so thankful that she said YES! If you're planning a wedding you'll want to reach out to Erica, she's what I call the Executive Wedding Planner on the go. She's always organized and knows how things are going to play out. Managing a busy household and a full planning business is something that I truly admire about Erica. Whilst I have first hand experience when it comes to raising children, Erica has been doing this long before I was in business. Erica is always smiling and an ability to make everyone feel comfortable. Understanding the niche of clients you attract Interestingly Erica kind of stumbled into wedding planning. Hearing her story of how she discovered it almost by accident. Often I talk about how skills from one job to another can be very transferable. It surprised me when Erica was in executive technology world before. Thinking about it you may not think that they would be helpful, but in Erica's experience she's been able to relate to her clients. Understanding your clients and the needs they have is very helpful. Since she was a top level executive she attracts these clients which are ideal for her. As a top level executive you don't have time to plan a wedding, that's where she comes in! I know you've probably heard this a million times, but I am going to say it again. Stop feeling guilt for the things that you aren't doing and start appreciating the things you ARE doing. I hear it all the time that other entrepreneurs aren't feeling like they are doing enough, especially when they see, what seems like EVERYONE else doing ALL the THINGS! Let me tell you that they really aren't doing all the things, they are just better at prioritizing. Sure, what does that even mean. It means that they have spent some time doing things that make them look like they are doing ALL the THINGS. I want to tell you how you can do it all as well, even when you don't think you can. I actually know you can because whenever I WANT to do something, it gets done. And I mean, who really wants to sit down and update ALT tags on a website or Blog. If you do then well, good for you. When you dream about what you want to be when you grow up it can be tricky to completely switch gears, but unrealized transferable skills are what has made Amy Haggerty so successful. I first met Amy in real life at a mom's wine group I organized before I even had kids. We had just moved into a new subdivision and I didn't know anyone. Putting a call out on Facebook was my way of trying to connect with others in the community and it completely worked. Looking back it's funny that we met this way, but from the very beginning Amy was extremely thoughtful, funny, organized. At the time I didn't quite know how she did it and even now I wonder, but I feel like we've always had this trait in common. Amy was the first to give me some old pregnancy books and she answered all my silly questions about kids and working. Looking up to her was the best thing I could have ever done as she has always been available to me not only in her business, but a friend. Somethings you just never forget and I swear I could write a funny coincidences book all about how Amy is always available for my many questions. Selling or buying a home is one of the biggest most stressful situations I have ever been in. She would take my texts, calls, emails and somehow make sense of it all. She's a saint! However, Amy is also a police officer part-time and whenever I have been purchasing or selling, somehow I've needed her police advice also. Unrealized transferable skills are what has made Amy so trusted within the community and in her policing community. Buy us a coffee and we could tell you the stories, but really what is transferable is that Amy has a super keen sense of people. She can assess a situation faster than anyone and she truly knows the ins and outs of her business. The skills needed for being a police officer and also selling homes is something I would have never thought would make sense. Her situation it's been a huge factor in her success. I know this isn't a topic you might hear about a lot, bullying in business isn't really talked about often. Why!? It's not something that I thought was super relevant to everyone, but what I have found is that most people just avoid the topic completely or dismiss it. I believe it's because we are embarrassed or feel ashamed about it and so we don't bring it up. It's something that has played a really significant role in not only my business but my life. I did a pole on Instagram asking my community if they have ever felt a form of bullying within their business and it was 70% of the people who responded yes. What! Tune in to hear all the details and how I got over this huge hurdle. Show notes: www.greyloftstudio.ca/podcast @pathtobusinesspodcast

On this episode of "Path to Business" Podcast I chat with Jessica Fewster about building a "Dream Wedding Venue" from the ground up and all the effort it takes to take an idea and turn it into something epic. Everything from the business plan to mortgages being difficult . Once Jessica shared this story with me I knew the world needed to hear it. It took A LOT of convincing but I was finally able to sit her down and now I can't wait to share it with you. Jessica is looked up to in the Ottawa Wedding Industry and I am completely honoured to have had her as a guest to share her story. It's not everyday that someone dreams up building a brick and mortar spot in the mountains that's modern and different from everything that the market had currently seen. As with most businesses we know that corporate should always be mixed in with weddings or events. After quickly realizing that corporate world wasn't for her or the business they went full gear into weddings. Everything happens for a reason and I really beleive in the fact that if you put your mind to something you will make it happen. I know that Jessica has worked her butt off to get where she is and build the team she's so proud to call her family. She is always trying her best to have nothing left to waste and has created smaller amazing business' that all feed into her "Le Belvédère" dream. Things like shuttles and getting ready spots that are perfect for family and friends to stay at, extra kitchen space to cook food offsite and create a canteen out of it. Nothing has stopped her. In your business I am sure you have been there where you realize that you want to control everything to make it all cohesive and on brand, but adding a shuttle service and getting ready spaces is next level. Talk about up-levelling. Usually I feel like we think of something but dismiss doing it because it will be too much work or effort. Not this team, the second they get an idea, watch out. It's going to happen and all for the right reasons, to please their ideal clients. With 120+ weddings a year it's no doubt that this team has it down to a science, but the icing on the cake is that each client and guest walks away feeling like this wedding was one to remember. Starting a Videography Career wasn't something that I would ever think that I could add to my own title, but it's one I am truly proud of. I was able to connect with Corinne who is an extremely talented filmmaker and she inspired me to push myself even further. Corinne is the Creative Director for Corinne McDonald Films, and Podcaster for The VIP Collective. She's extremely sought after in the Toronto area for wedding films. As soon as I virtually found her I became obsessed because she is extremely talented and works with some of the best in the Toronto, Ontario Wedding industry. Her work literally speaks for itself and leaves clients and other vendors speechless. When I first reached out to her I wasn't even sure if she would get back in touch with me, but of course she did and I was over the moon. Corinne is very talented and has also started her own Podcast and Youtube series as an expert in the wedding industry called The VIP Collective.
