Pretty Good Vibrations analyzes and celebrates pop and rock music and its crucial role throughout our lives. Podcast veteran and host Dan Koch (You Have Permission Podcast) has been a professional musician for most of the last 20 years: songwriter for the emo-pop band Sherwood, then as a commercial composer since 2012. Multiple episode styles include bracket-style tournaments, chronological walk-throughs, and deep dives into genres, artists, and eras.
The Pretty Good Vibrations podcast is a must-listen for any music lover who may not have the same level of musical ability or technical knowledge. As someone who falls into that category, I find it incredibly refreshing to be able to listen to Dan + (insert guest) as they discuss the music I love in ways that I couldn't necessarily articulate on my own. It's like having a personal conversation with experts in the field, unraveling the complexities of different genres and artists.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is how it delves deep into the analysis of music and genres. The discussions are informative and educational, allowing listeners to learn a lot about different groups and genres. The hosts have a genuine passion for music, which shines through in their conversations. It's evident that they have put in extensive research and preparation to provide insightful commentary on each topic.
Another highlight is how this podcast can reignite your love for certain artists or bands. There have been moments where I questioned if one of my favorite groups was overrated, but Dan and his guests reminded me why I loved them in the first place. They showcase the innovations and relevance of these artists, offering a fresh perspective that helps you appreciate their music even more.
While there aren't many negative aspects to mention, one possible downside is that sometimes the discussions can get too technical for those with limited musical knowledge. However, this is subjective and might not be an issue for everyone. Additionally, some episodes may focus on music that may not appeal to all listeners' tastes. However, it's worth giving these episodes a chance as they still provide valuable insights into different types of music.
In conclusion, The Pretty Good Vibrations podcast is an exceptional show for music enthusiasts looking to deepen their understanding of various genres and artists. With excellent content quality, production value, and engaging episodes, this podcast consistently delivers exceptional experiences for listeners. Whether you're well-versed in music or just starting to explore different sounds, this podcast is a fantastic resource that will broaden your musical horizons and leave you craving for more.
** Part 2 of 2 ** The Sex Pistols, Misfits, Clash, Ramones, Stooges, Damned, Black Flag & more... This is where it all began for punk rock, and this week I'm joined by returning guest Roman Honeycutt (Weezer episodes) and our old bandmate and dear friend Jon Hwong. We pit the top bands from this era against each other in another winner-take-all tournament; we also discuss the aesthetics and graphic design of punk rock, how our love for these bands has changed as we've gotten older, and tell some funny stories. ** This is a replay of an older episode, in anticipation of the upcoming 70s Punk & Proto-Punk Tournament ** Grab a 6-pack (or don't if you're Straight Edge) and get in the van! Your buddy's copy of Book Your Own Fucking Life doesn't have too many pages stuck together, and it looks like there's just enough gas to get to Bakersfield for tonight's basement show. Comedian Sam Tallent joins me as we pit songs by Black Flag, Bad Brains, Descendents, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, and more against each other in a winner-takes-the-only-clean-towel tournament. This music has played a massive role in Sam's life, and this conversation contains both lots of laughter and some pretty heartfelt moments. MxPx. Slick Shoes. Project 86. Plankeye. Craig's Brother. Dogwood. Starflyer 59. Chances are good that these band names either 1) mean nothing at all to you, which makes you an average American, or 2) meant EVERYTHING to you for a few years of your life and probably still mean something. The rest of you have probably heard MxPx, but maybe nobody else on this list. For my longtime friend and guest Jon Havens and I, these bands meant pretty much everything to us at one point, and although we've moved on from most of them musically (not all of them!), listening back through the 90s catalog of Seattle Christian indie record label Tooth & Nail was the perfect excuse to revisit the years of our early friendship. We were Christian rock subculture kids, spending a lot of time at Evangelical youth group and swapping discs we got at Berean or Lifeway Christian Bookstore. And how did we not talk AT ALL about using rotary phone cords as wallet chains...? Listen as we pit 16 of these artists against each other in a bracket-style tournament. Two music-centric films. Two different generations. Both released in 1994, Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction call upon the same period of popular music but in distinctly different ways (with very different budgets). Michael Parker (Pickwick) and I try out a new episode format -- you could say we take it for a spin in a vintage Chevy while enjoying an overpriced milkshake -- where we pit the soundtracks against each other, track by track. We also talk about the films a bit. And we hear some GREAT songs. Let me know if these are fun! PGV on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3TndELJ... THE GLORIOUS FINAL CHAPTER. * Also we talk about YouTube, but this episode is audio-only (and further episodes, most likely!) * We went for it on this one. 45 bands. 5 parts. Dashboard Confessional. Saves the Day. Paramore. Further Seems Forever. Anberlin. Brand New. Taking Back Sunday. Cursive. My Chemical Romance... and THIRTY-SIX other bands. I am joined by returning guest Jeff Martin (This Day & Age) for the most ambitious and thorough tournament yet attempted on Pretty Good Vibrations. But here's the thing -- we keep things fairly breezy throughout and don't linger on any particular band tooooo long... If you lived through this era, then we almost definitely talked about most of your favorite bands. Each year, Dan makes a mix of the songs that spent the most time in his head during the preceding 12 months. Some years, there is both a "rock" mix and an "everything else" mix, and 2023 is such a year. Presented today with a bit of context and explanation are the non-heavy songs; the full mix is also available as both a Spotify and Apple Music playlist for your listening convenience. I have found myself coming back time and again to power pop since recording the recent tournament episodes with Steve. I have been listening to the Spotify playlist we made as well as drawing more connections, so I figured I would put some of those together with some song clips. Enjoy! ** This is Part 2 ** Death Cab for Cutie. Vampire Weekend. HAIM. Lana Del Rey. beabadoobee. The Head and the Heart. Florence and the Machine. The Shins. Feist. You know you love it! This is the soundtrack to white coastal millennials becoming adults. And are we still working on that? Because we're still listening to indie pop, and we likely will never stop. Death Cab and The Postal Service just sold out a bunch of arenas. This shit isn't going ANYWHERE. So thankfully, original early-days member of The Head and the Heart Chelsey Matley joined me for a two-part, 32-artist indie pop mega tournament. LFG! Each year, Dan makes a mix of the songs that spent the most time in his head during the preceding 12 months. Some years, there is both a "rock" mix and an "everything else" mix, and 2023 is such a year. Presented today with a bit of context and explanation are the heavier songs; the full mix is also available as both a Spotify and Apple Music playlist for your listening convenience. Artists include: Weezer, PUP, Le Tigre, Origami Angel, and more. ** This is part 2 ** Fountains of Wayne. Nada Surf. Alvvays. Phantom Planet. Superdrag. In the 90s, a new generation of (mostly sad) boys who grew up on the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Byrds bought distortion pedals for their electric guitars and reinterpreted 60s and 70s pop for their Gen X peers. Since then, a steady stream of louder power pop has found its way to the headphones of (mostly sad) boys (and sometimes girls), and Steven James Aguilar (Heatmaps, producer/mixer) joins me as they all square off against each other in pursuit of the coveted Sad Boy Prince of Power Pop title. David Stuart returns for the innagural episode of a new format we are trying, focused on shorter takes from each of us, huddled around the same time period and genre. In this case, that's 2000s emo, with arguments presented about Saves the Day (3:30), Jimmy World You (32:40), Motion City Soundtrack (56:00), and The Used (1:04:00). ** JOIN THE NEW FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/802347208310205/ ** Spotify playlist for today's episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6mHqx3R71527bC1qNJKNBH?si=31e2b3177dad4d88 Dan's music licensing library: https://dankoch.net/library Email Dan: prettygoodvibrationspodcast@gmail.com IG: www.instagram.com/prettygoodvibespod/ Artwork: https://www.nickryanluevano.com/
* This is Part 2 -- go to last week for Part 1 * It's alternative, but not TOO crunchy. It's pop, but not TOO pop. You know what we're talking about: bands like Counting Crows, Matchbox 20, Gin Blossoms, and the Goo Goo Dolls. It's got rock instrumentation, but it's built for radio. And because these songs were so ubiquitous, hearing them takes us RIGHT BACK to our lives in the 1990s. Other artists discussed: Third Eye Blind, Dave Matthews Band, Alanis Morisette, Hootie & the Blowfish, and many more. ** JOIN THE NEW FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/802347208310205/ ** By "new," we mean "their first album came out in 2015 or later." Chad Mitchell, maybe my "best new music friend" if you know what I mean by that, joins me to talk through each of our top 10 "new" emo and/or punk bands. I chose to be vulnerable and selected mine entirely based on the total number of Apple Music plays they have in my library. Don't judge me! There was some confusion as to whether or not hardcore bands count -- I thought so, but probably had already told Chad they didn't, so we will need to do a top 10 new hardcore bands episode later, I guess! Artists discussed today include Hot Mulligan, PUP, Beach Slang, Pool Kids, Turnstile, Oso Oso, and more. Just like last time with The Starting Line's "Direction," "Emotion" will have to go up against the winner of an 8-album mini-tournament of 2015's biggest pop albums: OneDirection, Mark Ronson, Justin Beiber, Adele, Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, and more. Joe Greenetz (Sherwood) joins me again and does the deciding! Nothing weird about two men in their early 40s talking about music kind of made for children, right? Remember when stomp-clapping indie folk took the entire (white) world by storm? Well, some of that stuff holds up, some doesn't, and plenty of what's been recording both before and since is haunting and beautiful. Some songs come straight out of the gate like bats out of hell. They announce themselves with maximum energy as the band first kicks in. I love these songs! California punks Rancid and NOFX have tread much of the same ground, festival lineups, a split EP where they cover each other's songs, and mental space among their large fanbases. But who is better? This is the obvious question that needs answering. You're welcome! My good friend Joey Libolt joins me as Rancid and their family of artists, including Transplants, Operation Ivy, and Tim Armstrong's solo output, face off against NOFX's angsty skate punk. "Like Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, where three men find a pot of gold and end up killing one another in the name of greed, some people are poison." Who is your favorite Beatle? And do you take into account what they wrote, recorded, and released after the Beatles' breakup? We're trying out a new episode style, which on-air I called "Sugar, We're Throwin' Down" but in the future, I will probably refer to it as "David vs. Goliath." At any rate, it was my guest David Stuart's idea and basic structure, and I love it! He brought in a favorite and underrated album, The Starting Line's "Direction," which competed head-to-head with the winner of an 8-album mini-tournament of established emo/punk releases from that same year. Also, Kristen Tideman (of Justin Vernon episodes fame) joined us about halfway through! We listen to and discuss Anberlin, Motion City Soundtrack, Against Me!, Paramore, Relient K, and more. As my guest (Joe Greenetz of Sherwood) explains, for two glorious years in the mid-late 1990s, the Music Television channel put out compilation albums of new songs by breaking artists, most of them firmly in the rock/alternative realm. And, frankly, the people deserve to know definitively which of the two volumes is the superior collection. So we had no choice but to test out a new episode style/game, basically a soccer penalty kick-type "shootout," track competing against track. No one cares about these compilations anymore, but plenty of people still adore these songs, including tracks by Counting Crows, Cake, Stone Temple Pilots, Nada Surf, and more.
