Send us a textOn this episode of the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, Monique Powell—better known as Mo from the legendary ska-punk band Save Ferris—joins The Mox from the Midwest Mixtape Podcast for an incredible conversation that dives deep into her journey, challenges, and triumphs in the music industry. From battling Zoom issues and wrangling kittens to a massive spring tour and music video shoot, Mo shares it all with her signature authenticity and humor. They explore the powerful role music plays as therapy and community, reflect on the evolving treatment of women in the industry, and get candid about Mo's experiences as a studio vocalist, including ghost singing and collaborating with icons like Reel Big Fish. Mo also discusses stepping into band management and the empowerment that comes from taking control of your own path. Save Ferris' cover of “Come On Eileen” is the track that launched the band into the spotlight, transforming the 1982 Dexys Midnight Runners classic into a high-energy, horn-driven ska anthem that became a staple of the late ‘90s alternative scene. Frontwoman Monique Powell's powerhouse vocals and the band's infectious, upbeat arrangement gave the song a bold new identity, blending nostalgia with rebellious spirit. It not only showcased Save Ferris' unique ability to reimagine familiar tunes but also helped define the ska-punk movement of the era, earning them heavy radio play, MTV exposure, and a permanent place in the hearts of fans who still shout along to every word. It’s hard to be in a bad mood after a Save Ferris show. They are simply a fun band to see live, and their shows are a great way to kinda forget all the (looks around) madness going on in the world. That was reinforced on Saturday, August 26, when Save Ferris returned to Chicago to kick off their “Get Dancing” tour at Chop Shop (2033 W. North). I sat down with frontwoman Monique Powell after the show to talk about: Launching the tour specifically in Chicago The topic of aging in music, something she brought up during the Save Ferris performance My local “SPAM” sighting on Elston Avenue The spooky vibes of “Lights Out in the Reptile House” Debuting the single “Get Dancing” on stage in Chicago The current slow drip of singles … what’s it leading up to? The approaching 30th anniversary of Save Ferris’ breakthrough album, “It Means Everything” The adorable Save Ferris circle pit Save Ferris will be on the road for the majority of 2025. Send us a textIt's a BRAND NEW episode of Bakotunes! I'm honored to welcome my guest Monique Powell of Save Ferris to the show! It was an opportunity I could not pass up and after a few tech delays, it finally happened. Monique and I go back to the early days of the band in Orange County, gigging alongside ska homies Reel Big Fish and more before getting swept up in the third wave ska craze and a hit single - a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners 80s classic, "Come On Eileen"! That was followed with tours across the globe and back, in the van, and of course, tons of sweaty ska shows packed with sweaty, skankin' checkerboard kids. It was the nineties and it was a blast. Lots of fun facts and ska time warping! We also have classic Save Ferris music and their latest single, "Get Dancing!" that just dropped at all music outlets on 4/25. Enjoy! https://saveferris.com/**Episode features the songs "Come On Eileen," "Get Dancing", "The World Is New" by Save Ferris. Also contains excerpts from: "Orange County, CA (1976)", "MTV Skaturday", Save Ferris Honda Commercial, "Sid & Nancy", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Teens React to 90s Ska Music".Sponsored by Chain Cohn Clark - Kern County's leading accident, injury, and workers' compensation law firm. Book Vs. Movie: 10 Things I Hate About YouThe Taming of the Shrew & the 1999 Heath Ledger Film10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, reimagining the story in a high school setting. In both works, the plot revolves around two sisters—one desirable and another perceived as problematic. In The Taming of the Shrew, the younger, more attractive Bianca cannot marry until her older, strong-willed sister, Katherina, finds a husband. Similarly, in 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford can only date if her rebellious, sharp-tongued sister, Kat, does too. The character of Petruchio in Shakespeare's play, who is hired to "tame" Katherina and make her marriageable, is mirrored in Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), who is paid to date Kat (Julia Stiles) so that Bianca can start dating.Despite the initial financial motivation, Petruchio and Patrick develop genuine feelings for their partners. While The Taming of the Shrew ends with Katherina seemingly submitting to societal expectations, 10 Things I Hate About You gives Kat more agency. She remains independent but opens up to love, showing a more modern and feminist take on Shakespeare's story. Between the play & the film--which did we prefer? Listen to find out! Pick it up (please)! Its a ska special in MLPP Towers this week, and what better way to usher in the summer than to have a chat with Save Ferris' very own Monique Powell! She's been in movies, toured the world and gets mentioned in autobiographies and has taken time to speak with the fat lads about being mates with Two-Tone legends, Bro Culture, living in Birmingham, protesting and most importantly, Save Ferris' upcoming new releases and tour.Sadly there is no Aldi report this week as it wasn't Tom's turn to go. But we do have: Niallism gets the memo about the ska special, being inspired in your sleep, a tasty reminder of our flurry of Manchester Punk Festival activity and for the first ever time, we feel the need to tell people off. You've let me down, you've let the podcast down...etc etc.Music this week is by: Another One, The Slackers, Madness, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Sadaxe

Welcome to The Bubbles Mushrooms' Podcast - everyone's favorite! It's Monday again so we have a hot new episode for everyone to enjoy. Chad is back this week for his first ever BMAD episode, Luke and Jac are recovering from the Bubonic Plague that has been spreading all over west Michigan, Edward has a fat teenage raccoon update live from the TrailCam and Chad gets his first ever introduction to ALF porn. Formed in 1995, Save Ferris remains one of the seminal and most beloved bands from the third wave of ska. The group's Orange County home was fertile ground for a thriving music scene, with punk, rock, and ska emerging from the region. Save Ferris blended the best elements of these sounds to help bring the region's sound to the world. The group's humble beginnings saw them play house parties and local venues, powered by Monique Powell's high-octane vocals. Save Ferris' live show instantly became a hit. Known for their cover of "Come On Eileen," their hit single "The World Is New," and a feature in the motion picture "10 Things I Hate About You"- Save Ferris was atop of the world. After a hiatus that ran from 2003 to 2013, and some "legal hoopla": Powell and her bandmates went into the studio to record a new EP in 2016. The end result was an upbeat collection called: "Checkered Past."Following the release, Save Ferris played the entire 2017 Warped Tour on the main stage, headlined shows, and played festivals across the world. The future is as bright as it has been for Save Ferris in a long time. Powell scrapped a record she wrote prior to the pandemic and is currently at work on the first new Save Ferris album in nearly two decades. A lot of amazing shows in 2024: Powell has proven why she is the centerpiece of the action. Her dazzling on- stage presence continues to wow audiences and the band's energy is infectious. Save Ferris are out to prove that they're no nostalgia act, with their best days still ahead of them.
All the way back in season seven, we reviewed Save Ferris's 1997 release It Means Everything, the first ska album discussed on a deep dive for the podcast. Seven years later, we catch up with Save Ferris lead singer Monique Powell who discusses how she joined the ska-punk band, the highs and lows of signing to a major label, what it was like being on the road with artists like Sugar Ray and The Offspring in the late ‘90s and the current status of the band. During the interview, we briefly discussed the legal fight Powell was engaged in with former members which led to Powell taking ownership of the group and retroactively being given co-songwriting credits for songs that appeared on It Means Everything and 1999's Modified. To read more about the case, read the 2019 Forbes magazine feature. Artist Sam Grinberg started interning with The Simpsons in 2014. It turned into an actual job shortly after--a dream job! He joins us today to discuss the popular show, its possible ska connections and his own history with the genre. He's got a lot of history with ska. Sam grew up in New Jersey and used to go see tons of bands like Streetlight Manifesto and local legends Awful Waffle. He even drops some super obscure local ska band names on us like Stolen Oregano, Explosive Sheep, and The Nerd Who Ate St. Louis. Sam has also done a lot of artwork for ska bands. A short list includes Catbite, Kill Lincoln, Less Than Jake, Save Ferris, The Holophonics, the Too Hectic comps on Pay Attention Records (By Phil Lucas-Smith of Ska Punk Daily) and more. (He even did art for the Hella Mega Tour, which featured Fall Out Boy). Plus Sam talks about his other artwork like the Scumburbia series and his infamous "How To Skank" comic. We also learn how Sam got a job at The Simpsons, how he defines his art style, and how many tattoos people have gotten of his artwork. He talks about seeing Fatter Than Albert, Bomb The Music Industry and going to many shows at The Starland Ballroom and the Stone Pony. Plus he talks about going to the "It's a Ska World After All" at Disneyland. And we learn that one of his art teachers was Gary Panter, who created the characters for Pee Wee's Playhouse. And we discuss ska bands with Simpsons references and the ultimate Simpsons-themed metal-core band: Okilly Dokilly. A jam-packed episode! Support the show
Pickitup pickitup pickitup pickitup. I mean, seriously, pick up your plaid fedora and matching pants because we have a ska matchup! And boy, did those ska bands like covers. So we have two ska covers songs to pit against each other today, which is the best, Save Ferris's "Come on Eileen" or Reel Big Fish's "Take on Me"?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Check your toxic masculinity at the door and get ready for the skip day to end all skip days! This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with singer-songwriter and comedian Emma Jayne (@emmajaynegrams) to talk about the 1986 campy teen classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off. This movie exists outside of the confines of heteronormativity (and the space time continuum). Nearly every character is queer (except Principal Rooney who is continually punished for his crimes against the queer community ie. our beautiful polycule). Everything about Ferris' relationship with Cameron and Sloane is giving Gen Z #relationshipgoals. Ferris planned this whole skip day just to lift his boyfriend Cameron out of his depressive funk and to give everyone a chance to bond with their newest polycule member, Sloane. We dive into the dynamics of our three leads, exploring Ferris through a transmasc lens and declaring Cameron our panromantic gray ace king. Sloane of course is not like the other girlies. She wears two different earrings, a sure sign of queerness; and we love watching her and Cameron get closer as the film goes on. There is nothing gayer in this world than Ferris lip-synching for his life TWICE on a parade float in his cheetah print vest. Not only is he fully embracing drag culture, but he is doing it all to cheer up Cameron. We love to see it. Ferris is absolutely winning for boyfriend of the year. This movie is pure vibes, just chasing one dopamine hit to the next. Genuinely feeling SO SEEN by this neurodivergent queer rep. #RepresentationMatters! We know one thing for sure, Ferris Bueller's Day Off Should've Been Gay. #SaveFerris (from heteronormativity). Tune your ears to another extra-special episode of Fire and Water Records! In part 2 of a super-smash crossover event with Pop Culture Affidavit, the brothers Ryan and Neil Daly welcome guest host Tom Panarese to continue their already-three-hours-long discussion on favorite cover songs for another equally-long-conversation (seriously, what the hell is wrong with these guys?!!). What makes a great cover song? What's the point of covering somebody else's music? Do women sing Tom Waits songs better than he does? Do punk bands play Bob Dylan songs better than he does? Why does Panarese hate his sister? What genre does Neil like more than rock 'n roll? What song makes Ryan think about dying, but like, y'know, in a good way, maybe? All these questions, and many more than you want to know, will be answered on this episode of Fire and Water Records! Track list "Hey Jude" (The Beatles) covered by Wilson Pickett "La Bamba" (Traditional/Ritchie Valens) covered by Los Lobos "Desolation Row" (Bob Dylan) covered by My Chemical Romance "Got to Get a Message to You" (The Bee Gees) covered by Swamp Dogg "It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City" (Bruce Springsteen) covered by David Bowie "Higher Ground" (Stevie Wonder) covered by Red Hot Chili Peppers "Both Sides Now" (Joni Mitchell) covered by Neil Daly "Get Down, Make Love" (Queen) covered by Nine Inch Nails "Landslide" (Fleetwood Mac) covered by Smashing Pumpkins "Drive" (The Cars) covered by Britta Phillips "Ol' 55" (Tom Waits) covered by Sarah McLachlan "Love is All Around" (Sonny Curtis/"The Mary Tyler Moore Show") covered by Joan Jett "Stand By Me" (Ben E. On today's episode, I'm really excited to be chatting with Mr. Justin Linn. Justin is the guitarist and co-vocalist for the band Save Ferris. Justin lives in San Diego. Save Ferris was formed in Los Angeles. We talk about him joining the ska and pop punk/rock band as well as his history being a musician. We talk about his family's musical legacy and how it transformed the 80's and beyond. Justin also had a stint in the post hardcore outfit Bleed the Dream when they played the 2005 Warped Tour. So, we talk all about what that was like. It was a pleasure speaking with Justin. I've really enjoyed following him on social media, it seems as though there are a lot of cool things in the pipeline for Save Ferris.
