When some close to you dies by suicide, the grief can be feel unbearable. Noam Schneck PHD joins me to discuss his research on how the brain responds to the loss of a loved one who has taken their life. More about Noam: Dr. Schneck studies the way that people adapt to the suicide loss of a loved one. Specifically, his research aims to identify unconscious processes of coping with the loss that help people grow and adapt while also allowing them to remain engaged in current life demands. These unconscious processes are identified using a machine learning based approach to functional magnetic resonance brain imaging called neural decoding. The goal of this research is to ultimately develop a treatment technique that would entrain greater unconscious processing of the loss. IN THE NEWS: 1. Colombe Schneck's THE PARIS TRILOGY is a book—or rather three books, first published separately in French—about growing up, about friendship, about love, about family, about class, about womanhood and the patriarchy…and about swimming. In short, about every side of a life, as it just happens to take place in Paris. Rendered in crisp, fluid English by translators Lauren Elkin and Natasha Lehrer—who joins the conversation— THE PARIS TRILOGY begins with SEVENTEEN, a searingly frank account of the abortion the writer had as a teenager, passes through FRIENDSHIP, the devastating record of a childhood bond cut brutally short, and concludes with SWIMMING: A LOVE STORY, the chronicle of how this particular sport helped her build, and then grieve, a relationship.Buy The Paris Trilogy: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/the-paris-trilogy*Colombe Schneck is the author of eleven books of fiction and non-fiction, she has received prizes from the Académie Française, Madame Figaro and the Society of French Writers. French documentary film director, journalist, and bestselling author Colombe Schneck joins Zibby to discuss SWIMMING IN PARIS, the Natalie Portman Book Club Pick and a brilliantly written, searingly intimate piece of biographical fiction about a woman experiencing all of life: friendships, love, sex, abortion, and swimming. Colombe shares why she finally felt compelled to write about her abortion in a burst of raw emotion after decades of silence. She also touches on the trauma carried by her Holocaust-survivor parents, the realities of growing up in a liberal Parisian environment, the death of a close childhood friend, a painful breakup, and the solace she found in swimming. For the first few centuries of the church, Christians were pacifists. Jesus' teachings about turning the other cheek, forgiving your enemies, and being peacemakers were taken seriously and literally. But over time, as Christianity became the official religion of the empire rather than a marginal and persecuted sect, the church began to edge out of pacifism and into what is today called “just war theory.” Today, advanced military technologies and weapons of mass destruction pose new challenges for ethicists, theologians, and church leaders. Do the principles of just war theory still stand in a world where whole cities can be incinerated with a single bomb, or where people can be targeted and killed from afar, via drone warfare? On this episode of Glad You Asked, hosts Emily Sanna and Rebecca Bratten Weiss talk to political philosopher and activist Stephen Schneck about the ethics of serving in the military and how the church's perspective has changed and developed over centuries. Schneck has served on the board of directors for Catholic Mobilizing Network and for Catholic Climate Covenant, Sojourners, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, and for Democrats for Life of America. He served as national co-chair of Catholics for Obama in 2012 and of Catholics for Biden in 2020. Schneck has also been the executive director of the Franciscan Action Network. Unions were once an essential component of the U.S. economy. For generations, unions safeguarded the rights of workers and ensured a better way of life for working-class families. Although not everyone regarded unions with uncritical approval, many families were proud of their union affiliation. But in recent decades, things have changed. Unions have less influence than they once did, fewer workers are union members, and even working-class citizens often eye unions with distrust. Many Catholics, especially those who are politically conservative, are likely to be wary of unions. But should they be? In this, the pilot episode of the Glad You Asked podcast, hosts Emily Sanna and Rebecca Bratten Weiss ask Stephen Schneck how Catholics ought to regard labor unions. Schneck formerly taught politics at the Catholic University of America, where he was also the Director of CUA's Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies. He has served on the Board of Directors for Catholic Mobilizing Network and for Catholic Climate Covenant, Sojourners, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, and for Democrats for Life of America. Most of us have heard of the case where the Supreme Court placed limits of freedom of speech. However most people don't know the name of the case and frequently misquote it. A recent case out of Kansas once again brings into question the government's ability to criminalize certain types of speech. From the Schneck case in 1919 to the Hernandez-Calvillo case in 2022, when the government tries to make speech it doesn't like criminal, We the People must stand up to the tyranny.
Today's guest is Stephen Schneck, a political philosopher by training and a well-known advocate for Catholic social justice teachings in public life. He spent more than 30 years at The Catholic University of America as a professor, department chair and dean, and he was the founder and long-time director of the Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies. He's worked with Catholic Climate Covenant, Catholic Mobilizing Network, Franciscan Action Network and as a member of the Obama Administration's White House Advisory Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. And now, he's here to talk to us about his latest role. He was just recently appointed by President Biden to serve as a commissioner on the bipartisan United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. What is the US Commission on International Religious Freedom? What does it do? Steve provides answers—as well as insights into why religious freedom and the freedom of belief are so important to communities around the globe. He highlights a few key issues and regions where religious freedom is particularly threatened that we should keep our eyes on. And he offers his reflections on how Catholics in the United States can advocate on this issue. Below you can find the full excerpt from "Fratelli tutti" that is mentioned during the episode: “Ancient conflicts thought long buried are breaking out anew, while instances of a myopic, extremist, resentful and aggressive nationalism are on the rise. In some countries, a concept of popular and national unity influenced by various ideologies is creating new forms of selfishness and a loss of the social sense under the guise of defending national interests. … there are those who appear to feel encouraged or at least permitted by their faith to support varieties of narrow and violent nationalism, xenophobia and contempt, and even the mistreatment of those who are different.” (FT 11/86)

This episode of the Utah Lax Report podcast features an interview with BYU Head Coach Matt Schneck. Schneck has been at the helm of the Cougars since 2009, earning a 170-51 record and two MCLA National Championships (2011, 2021). Before becoming the head coach, Schneck served as an assistant coach and played for the Cougars in the 1997 season where he was part of the very first MCLA National Championship team. We talk about all this and more! I'm personally grateful to Coach Schneck for always supporting me and my various lacrosse projects. When I started Utah Lacrosse News, Coach Schneck was always supportive and encouraging and has been ever since. I've only had two coaches invite me to post-game festivities and Coach Schneck is one of them. (Not that I need to be invited, or should be invited for that matter). The team was heading to Pizza Pie Cafe in Provo and Coach Schneck asked if I could come along. I declined as I had to get back to my family and write a recap, but I'll never forget the invite.
