Chad Mitchell, maybe my "best new music friend" if you know what I mean by that, joins me to talk through each of our top 10 "new" emo and/or punk bands. I chose to be vulnerable and selected mine entirely based on the total number of Apple Music plays they have in my library. Don't judge me! There was some confusion as to whether or not hardcore bands count -- I thought so, but probably had already told Chad they didn't, so we will need to do a top 10 new hardcore bands episode later, I guess! The latest episode of the BrooklynVegan Podcast is an interview with Florida emo/math rock band Pool Kids. We caught up with the band in the midst of their headlining tour in continued support of their breakthrough 2022 self-titled sophomore LP, which just celebrated its one-year anniversary this month, and also surrounding the release of their new split EP with their hardcore alter-egos POOL. We called them up while they were in the van and running late to their San Francisco show, so we had to weather a few minor technical difficulties caused by cell phone service, but we ended up having a great chat during which the band reflected on their breakout year, discussed the new EP, dove into their 2017 formation and backstory, and much more. -- The BrooklynVegan podcast is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and more. DistroKid allows you to do automatic revenue splits, so collaborators and co-writers can get paid too, it provides you with an artist page that links to your music on all streaming services, it allows you to add lyrics, credits, and liner notes, and more. This week, Features contributor Matty G sits down with Christine Goodwyne and Nicolette Alvarez of emo/indie rockers Pool Kids to talk about their self-titled album, the hurdles they encountered in releasing it (including a studio flood!), how they made their way up from Florida to call Chicago home, and much more! Pool Kids self-titled album is out on Skeletal Lightning. "Well, we definitely lucked out... [It's] like we showed up and we had this huge extended family of people that welcomed us in and were like, 'Hey, do you want to start a band with us? Hey, do y'all want to go to the show with us?' We were really able to just tap into this whole network of friends and artists and it's been really, wonderful since then." - Pool Kids, on arriving in Chicago from Tallahassee. Produced by Brian Szpak. Image Credit: Mimi Hong
Nearly four years passed between the release of Pool Kids' first album and their most recent self-titled—but four years without an album doesn't mean four years of inactivity. While “Safe Sex” stands on its own as a DIY release, the difference in processes between their two full-lengths is impressive. With a new goal to write with a wider range of listeners in mind, Christine challenged herself to create a more comprehensive final product. And with help—and at times, tough love—from her bandmates, even the casual listener will agree: Pool Kids has delivered. Now, they're heading out on tour as they continue to exceed expectations, so catch them while you can and experience Pool Kids at their best yet. Pool Kids songwriter, guitarist, and singer Christine Goodwyne talks to me about why Christian heaven seems unrealistic and the mushroom trip she intentionally used to change her life. I love Pool Kids' new album, and this convo was a breeze. What aspects of our personalities survive huge changes, and is it good that they do? Content warning: toxic Christianity, mushrooms vs. Lexapro, poorly laid out grocery stores, full-on ego death. When legendary musicians are inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, they get a classy trophy, a star-studded ceremony, and honors at the official museum. But the Indiecast Hall Of Fame inductees get something even better: bragging rights. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen induct albums into Indiecast HOF in three categories: '90s, '00s, and 2010s (29:10).The indie news front was fairly quiet this week, other than popular podcasting and TV duo Desus And Mero announcing they're parting ways after what seemed to be tension and animosity (4:47). It now leaves Indiecast as the only pop culture podcasting duo left in the universe. Steven and Ian also share their thoughts about The Wonder Years' new music and dedicated fan base (17:31).In this week's Recommendation Corner (55:53), Ian gives props to Pool Kids, a Florida-based band that sounds like Paramore if Hayley Williams was obsessed with listening to Rush. Steven endorses the new album by John Moreland, whose ninth album Birds In The Ceiling is out now.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. On this episode of Quick Talk, a TM Forum podcast, I talked to Bruno Chomel, Chief Information Officer at Orange Poland about how the operator transformed its IT systems from legacy solutions to software, rolled out a new platform called Orange Flex that lets its customers change their services via an app, and the challenges the company faced when doing the transformation. Bruno will also be passing along his recommendations operators going through the same thing.
Spanish Love Songs put out my number one album of 2018 with Schmaltz and now they're back for more with its follow up - Brave Faces Everyone. The band has certainly not done the same thing twice, diving deeper into a cohesive punk sound, expanding their lyrical content to take on world issues through a personal lens, and doubling down on making a career out of meaningful connections with their fans. There is nothing phoned in about Spanish Love Songs (except this conversation, literally). Listen to Brave Faces Everyone available everywhere and catch the band as they tour across the US with The Wonder Years, Free Throw, and Pool Kids!
