Steven and Ian open this week's episode with a quick Politics-cast about Tim Walz, the VP candidate whose life resembles a middle-aged man's version of a Hold Steady song (2:05). From there, they discuss a range of not-quite-indie topics — the retirement of Aerosmith from the road (15:30), the explosion of Chappell Roan (24:33), and whether John Mayer's "Daughters" is the worst song ever written (as suggested by St. Vincent) (34:37).In the mailbag, a reader asks for advice on which upcoming show he should see, and the guys instead end up talking about the ethics of selling a birthday present bought by your wife (48:25).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the latest from Parannoul and Steven reps the new album by Oso Oso (54:53).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Chad Mitchell, maybe my "best new music friend" if you know what I mean by that, joins me to talk through each of our top 10 "new" emo and/or punk bands. I chose to be vulnerable and selected mine entirely based on the total number of Apple Music plays they have in my library. Don't judge me! There was some confusion as to whether or not hardcore bands count -- I thought so, but probably had already told Chad they didn't, so we will need to do a top 10 new hardcore bands episode later, I guess! We had the pleasure of interviewing M.A.G.S. over Zoom video! M.A.G.S.'s recently released his sophomore project Destroyer via Smartpunk Records. M.A.G.S.'s songwriting weaves together vivid imagery, philosophical musings, and raw emotion to confront the lies and disillusionment of the world around us. The sophomore single offers a profound exploration into the doubts and musings we all have regarding our destiny and faith. It dwells deep into human life, posing questions about our reason for being here, what our purpose is, and why unfortunate events take place in it.The Buffalo-bred, LA-based indie rock artist received critical nods for his Say Things That Matter LP, landing him on MTV News, Pigeons & Planes, UPROXX, Alternative Press, American Songwriter and more. M.A.G.S. previously supported Sleeping With Sirens on the Family Tree tour last May, and has toured with The Happy Fits, Oso Oso & Blvck Hippie. We want to hear from you! I saw Oso Oso several years ago for the first time in a small town in New Jersey. I was instantly hooked after their debut album, Real Stories of True People Who Kind of Looked Like Mosters…, and always wanted to see them live, but never really had the opportunity. Around 2018, right before Basking in the Glow came out, I took the trek to a small venue in NJ, and saw Jade and his band play in front of a room of maybe 20-30 people. It has been fun being from the outside looking in and seeing Oso Oso grow as a group. They now travel the world and fill up venues to capacity as a headlining act. It was a true honor being able to chat with Jade Lilitri in-person before his Asbury Park gig. I always felt a connection to not only his music but some of his interest. Of course the emo music is a great start, but he's also from Long Island, where I was born, and has been on record as a huge Knicks fan. I learned during this conversation that he is a die-hard Yankees fan and grew up with the team - Bernie Williams being his favorite player. We really took this interview in several different directions. Jade told us about his dog and how that's always his chance to decompress when home from a long tour. He discussed how Basking in the Glow was a record where he could finally quit his job at a bar and saw a growing audience. There's a fun story about when he didn't receive a positive welcome from a punk show as a teenager and how he was able to bounce back after a gig that could've pushed him away from music. How a song on MySpace led to confidence and helped Jade find his voice. Lastly, how life experiences and the loss of a best friend has led to a new meaning behind touring and the band as a whole.
Let's say you have a band. It's mostly you, though you bring in a rotating cast of characters to help you fill it out. You don't love touring, but do love snapping together pop punk ditties with a surgical top-down-in-the-summertime sonic aesthetic. You tend to pair these with dada-esque videos, and somehow it makes sense. Though it's your act, your last name is a nom de plume. You may understand the difference between the 'emo' and 'scene' scenes, and you may churn out catchy harmonies like they're growing on trees, but beneath the surface of incandescent melodies lurks melancholy. That's where we find Jade Lilitri and his erstwhile ensemble, Oso Oso. Let's put the needle in the groove, together, and unpack what it means when an optimist drinks 'half empty cups.'(Recorded February 14, 2020)Listen to the album on SpotifyA Few Minutes WithMatthew Sweet - Thought I Knew YouA Current AffairDermot Kennedy - Outnumbered

Destroyer is a band that has been around for so many years, they seems to exist in their own realm. This week on Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen dig into Destroyer's new album Labyrinthitis (33:23) and wonder if the band is now immune to criticism from music reviewers. Oso Oso, on the other hand, is being picked up by music outlets. It seems as though their surprise-released album Sore Thumb (42:06) is finally putting them on the indie music map. This week also had some big news in indie music: Will Butler announced he has officially left Arcade Fire (:27). Indiecast talks about Butler's decision and discusses Arcade Fire's new music (3:24). Steven and Ian also walk through Lollapalooza's 2022 lineup (14:22), which was just unveiled this week and includes the apparently controversial headliner Metallica. In this week's Recommendation Corner (53:36), Ian's highlights several bands including Caracara, Soul Glo, Proper., and Carly Cosgrove. Gang Of Youths was recently named one of the most Indiecast bands, but what other musicians fit nicely in with the Indiecast brand? Since the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame was in the news this week thanks to Dolly Parton (2:43), Indiecast hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen decide to induct four albums into the Indiecast Hall Of Fame (29:04).Steven and Ian also discuss some of the biggest news in indie music this week, which this time had to do with a somewhat imaginary feud between Japanese Breakfast and Machine Gun Kelly (11:08). After MGK shared his upcoming album cover, many Japanese Breakfast fans pointed out its similarities to Jubilee's artwork. But that begs the questions: Does MGK even know what a persimmon is? And, more importantly, has he ever heard a Japanese Breakfast song?In this week's Recommendation Corner (51:09), Ian talks Oso Oso surprise-releasing their fourth studio album. Steven discusses his recent Uproxx interview with Destroyer's Dan Bejar ahead of next week's new album.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. This week, Steve and Ian are getting ready for festival season. Pitchfork Festival is finally here, featuring sets from Dogleg, Oso Oso, and Bartees Strange and marking the tripling of the fest's notorious “token DIY/emo” acts. This year, festival season arrives in the fall, which leads into a question from a listener asking which albums are indicative of the changing of the leaves for our two hosts. This week's episode is centered around Minnesota trio Low, who has been regularly releasing music over the last 30 years or so. Recently, Low's consistent catalogue was starting to feel like they were tapering off, but their thirteenth studio album, Hey What, has them back in the saddle for their best collection of songs in recent memory. Perhaps this is the result of the prominence of the vocals on this album — where the voices were frequently buried amid the glitchy instrumentation on previous efforts, Hey What has the dual vocalists front and center, often cutting through the musical mayhem behind them.In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is plugging 2012, the new album from Pittsburgh band Brightside. Meanwhile, Steve wants to bring your attention to the forthcoming album from Irish post-punk band Silverbacks.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Bobby and Alex talk Kevin McCarthy’s ramblings on the All-Star Game move, the return of minor league baseball, an unceremonious halt to Albert Pujols’s career, and #RatcoonGate in New York. Then they take some calls on franchises half-heartedly tanking and the prospect of real labor solidarity in baseball. We start Season 2 with Detroit-area musician and visual artist Kris Herrmann. It was obvious that neither of us had been talking a lot, as we took over 2 hours to talk about Kris's drumming, photo and video work, the various tours he's been on in past years with bands like Shortly, Tigers Jaw, Oso Oso, and more, and how it feels after so many years to finally have his drumming on a record. Kris is one of Detroit's most versatile, talented, and loved creators, and that shines through in our interview.

“I felt like I couldn't tell a full story in four songs-I wanted the album to have a narrative arch, a whole, fully story that you have to listen to at once.” Proper. is a POC, queer Brooklyn based band who is ushering in a conversation into the emo/pop-punk scene about growing up in white suburbia and being into the music that they are. Their most recent album,* I Spent The Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better* recieved great review from The Alternative and even Pitchfork (a 7.4 rating!) and is totally inspired by The Wonder Years. Erik Garlington, the lead singer of Proper., says he recieved Dan "Soupy" Campbell's blessing about using the title for the album. They are playing a SOLD OUT holiday show with Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties and Jade from Oso Oso at the Starland Ballroom on Dec. 14! What we're saying is: check this band out so you can say you listened to them before they blew up. Since Brian was working AND sick, we invited former guest, Ariel Atkins from BLMChicago to help guest host. Proper. is currently on their first U.S. Tour! Check them out at their remaining dates: https://www.likerealproper.com/ Stream their new album too & check out their other stuff. Amy Hoffman is the vocalist and guitarist for the Boston-based band, Future Teens! Amy is one of the most wonderful human beings in the scene and their dedication to making the scene safe and inclusive is one of the best examples of creating a community of care. Amy had a wild ride that led her not only to the east coast but also to a career as a professional musician aboard cruise ships and eventually into their role with Future Teens. The band is about to release a brand new album, and Amy is READY to hit the road - a place that feels like home for them. Also, prepare yourself for one of the most chill and laid back chats I’ve ever had on this podcast! Jade and I connected early on during the first album, "Real Stories Of True People Who Looked Kind Of Like Monsters." I was a huge fan and supporter. Following that debut, it was great to see the mainstream press take a liking to him after the amazing follow-up, "The Yunahon Mixtape." Now the album coming out August 16th, "Basking in the Glow," should propel him to another level. It’s that good. On the podcast, Jade and I discuss his early music life getting heckled, the new album, and there’s a good portion about the NBA, which we’re both huge fans of. This week is another special conversation of the podcast - it’s also the firs to include THREE guests. Individually, I sat down with Joey Cahill, Jake Sulzer, and Dustin Watson to discuss their record labels. This was an idea that came to me one day when I coincidentally was planning to hang out with the three dudes one day and was like, “hey! wanna do my podcast?” Glad this episode could come together - granted, a day later than usual, but it’s a good one, so I hope you all dig it!6131 Records:Joey Cahill is a founder of 6131 Records, which began in California and is now based in Virginia -- yet, Joey lives in Boston! 6131 Records was chosen for this conversation because it’s a well-established label that has launched acts like Joyce Manner, Cruel Hand, Julien Baker, Touche Amore, and Culture Abuse. The label has evolved, turning out some fantastic new acts like Macseal, Late Bloomer, If you like the conversation, and the tunes (some Kindling for ya!), head over to 6131Records.com to learn more about the label and to pick up some tunes!Counter Intuitive Records:Jake Sulzer started Counter Intuitive Records a few years ago on a whim - he wound up growing the label into a new school emo/garage powerhouse. Jake was chosen for this conversation because his label has been growing exponentially to the point where he just recently obtained his official business license! The label launched the fantastic acts, Oso Oso, Mom Jeans, and Prince Daddy and the Hyena, and has put out some great releases from Retirement Party, Just Friend, oldsoul, and a re-issue of the epic State Lines album, “Hoffman Manor.” If you dig our conversation, check out counterintuitiverecords.com!Disposable America: Dustin Watson runs Disposable America, which is a DIY label out of Boston - out of his living room, no less. Dustin was chosen for this conversation because his label is pretty quaint and there aren’t many plans to explode it into anything too large. It’s a manageable-sized label that has put out tunes (primarily on cassette) from the likes of Horse Jumper of Love, Lillith, DUMP HIM, Soft Fangs, Infinity Girl, and halfsour. If you like what you heard in this conversation, visit disposable-america.com and get some tunes!ART OF SURVIVAL UPDATE:We've officially rebranded The Art of Survival and launched a revamping of our website - artissurvival.com!
