"In a way, if you were a juror on this case, you got educated on cryptocurrency, terrorist financing, and also the Syrian Civil War." - Edward Burns In this episode, Ian Andrews (CMO, Chainalysis) has a full house as he speaks to several key members of the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, including the District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, the Assistant District Attorney, Edward Burns and the Chief of the Counterterrorism Unit, David Stuart. David Stuart returns for the innagural episode of a new format we are trying, focused on shorter takes from each of us, huddled around the same time period and genre. In this case, that's 2000s emo, with arguments presented about Saves the Day (3:30), Jimmy World You (32:40), Motion City Soundtrack (56:00), and The Used (1:04:00). ** JOIN THE NEW FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/802347208310205/ ** Spotify playlist for today's episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6mHqx3R71527bC1qNJKNBH?si=31e2b3177dad4d88 Dan's music licensing library: https://dankoch.net/library Email Dan: prettygoodvibrationspodcast@gmail.com IG: www.instagram.com/prettygoodvibespod/ Artwork: https://www.nickryanluevano.com/
We're trying out a new episode style, which on-air I called "Sugar, We're Throwin' Down" but in the future, I will probably refer to it as "David vs. Goliath." At any rate, it was my guest David Stuart's idea and basic structure, and I love it! He brought in a favorite and underrated album, The Starting Line's "Direction," which competed head-to-head with the winner of an 8-album mini-tournament of established emo/punk releases from that same year. Also, Kristen Tideman (of Justin Vernon episodes fame) joined us about halfway through! We listen to and discuss Anberlin, Motion City Soundtrack, Against Me!, Paramore, Relient K, and more. Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas
You might remember the somewhat bizarre worries that swept through certain circles back in 2012, based on the end of the world being predicted by the Maya calendar. The world didn't end, which is unsurprising because the Maya hadn't predicted that, and for that matter they had no way of doing so. But there is very interesting archeology behind our understanding of how the Maya developed their calendar, as well as other aspects of their language and scientific understanding. Mayanist David Stuart takes us on a tour of what we know and what we're still discovering.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2023/08/14/246-david-stuart-on-time-and-science-in-maya-civilization/Support Mindscape on Patreon.David Stuart received his Ph.D. in anthropology from Vanderbilt University. David Stuart jako pierwszy zdefiniował to zjawisko i ukuł pojęcie „chemsex” na określenie seksu uprawianego pod wpływem substancji psychoaktywnych przez środowisko MSM (ang. men who have sex with men, pol. mężczyźni mający kontakty seksualne z mężczyznami). Addiction Psychiatrist Dr. Wiplove Lamba & Addictions Case Manager and former addict Jean-Paul (JP) Michael have learnt a lot about how to help men who “party with drugs” (PNP) from Dr. David Stuart. Dr. Stuart has been a beacon of light in trying to help health care providers help those who party with drugs. In this session, Wip has to prepare a talk for Monday where he teaches on “Party and Play”. This is part two of the 70thepisode of the ‘Soccernostalgia Talk Podcast'. As always this is Shahan from Los Angeles and I am joined by Paul from Shipley in EnglandFor this episode, we have a special podcast. Earlier this year, Paul proposed the idea to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1982 World Cup, by interviewing some of our regular guests, who would have been around and lived through the World Cup.This was not meant to be in-depth or analytical analysis of the tournament. We just want to hear personal memories of the event and then compile everyone's responses spread into one or two podcasts.Myself and Paul will also include our own memories in the end. The 1982 World Cup was a formative football experience for Shahan and myself. As an eight-year-old football fan, this tournament was my introduction to the global game beyond Europe, and the 40th anniversary seemed worth commemorating. Through the podcast and Shahan's network of contacts, we have fans who watched around the world in 1982 sharing their experiences and memories. I have to say the only disappointment was not being able to get a guest from Northern Ireland – we tried to get hold of several fans and even players, but unfortunately without any luck. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the podcast, and we hope you enjoy these interviews and memories of a great tournament, the 1982 World Cup. For this second part, the following shared their memories of the 1982 World Cup:Mr. Franco Spicciariello (from Italy) @spicciarMr. Davey Naylor (from England) @englandstatsMr. David Stuart (from Scotland) @davstu11 We also included our own memories in the end. On this week's show: Climate change is killing critical soil organisms in arid regions, and early evidence for the Maya calendar from a site in Guatemala Staff Writer Elizabeth Pennisi joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss how climate change is affecting “biocrust,” a thin layer of fungi, lichens, and other microbes that sits on top of desert soil, helping retain water and create nutrients for rest of the ecosystem. Recent measurements in Utah suggest the warming climate is causing a decline in the lichen component of biocrust, which is important for adding nitrogen into soils. Next, Sarah talks with Skidmore College anthropologist Heather Hurst, who directs Guatemala's San Bartolo-Xultun Regional Archaeological Project, and David Stuart, a professor of art history and director of the Mesoamerica Center at the University of Texas, Austin, about their new Science Advances paper. The study used radiocarbon dating to pin down the age of one of the earliest pieces of the Maya calendar. This week, we laid bait of lofty vision statements and years of intricate tax dodging, to lure one of Britain's most-awarded copywriters from the shadows. Locked and loaded to lob a few volleys at brand purpose, he's Nick Asbury. A brilliant writer and a thoroughly good bloke to boot, Nick crafts witty and charming words for branding and design. Pile your plate high as Nick talks to us on how a poem about the England football team got him in real trouble, differentiating between writing for design versus writing for ads, Paul Newman's salad dressing, using wit (properly), a Friends NFT, why the Innocent imitators in packaging copy need to cut it out, and his plans to dismantle brand purpose. There's a Freaky Friday/Trading Places film vibe to this episode, as JP Castlin puts the boot very much on the other foot to volley a tonne of tough posers to the outspoken founder and Creative Director of Gasp, and this show's usual host, Giles Edwards. In this episode of The Sexual Wellness Sessions hosted by Psychosexual & Relationship Therapist Kate Moyle, we're talking about Chemsex with a particular focus on the gay, bisexual and men-having-sex-with-men community where chemsex is most common. My guest for this conversation is David Stuart who was the first person to name and identify Chemsex as an emerging gay cultural phenomenon. He's a support worker, public servant and a drug use counsellor, specialising in chems and chemsex. He is incredibly experienced in working with those struggling with chemsex use, and what factors are often involved in starting and maintaining the use chems as a part of someone's sex life. One of the challenges of chemsex is that people often describe this particular use of drugs, as making them feel less inhibited and experiencing increased pleasure; however the flipside of this is that is can pose challenges for sober sex. In this conversation we unpack some of the cultural and social factors that are contributing to people's challenges with chemsex; and we examine some of the narratives and experiences that can influence someone's relationship to chems. There is a blurb from Mat Johnson on the back of How I Learned to Hate in Ohio that reads: “David Stuart MacLean is a writer who can break your heart, terrify you, and make you laugh, all on the same page.” I’m typically not a blurb reader, but this was such a good description of MacLean’s writing that I had to include it.
In this episode of the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak with David Stuart about the ChemSex phenomenon hitting the gay community globally. ChemSex is the name given to the sexualised use of drugs by gay men, a rising phenomenon. Drugs and sex have held hands for a long time. What makes ChemSex so different today? “I imagine they’ve held hands since the first grape was fermented. But we have an HIV epidemic now, and in the UK as well as in Australia, it’s particularly affecting gay men. In the nineties, when preferred drugs were ecstasy and powdered cocaine, we didn’t see large numbers of gay men presenting to Emergency departments. In the last ten or so years we’ve seen some quite significant cultural changes; geo-sexual networking apps, a shift in our attitudes to HIV as it’s become more manageable and some newer, much more harmful drugs like ice (methamphetamine) and GHB/GBL which provide a particularly sexual-disinhibiting high. This syndemic of behaviours and our adoption of apps to facilitate faster, more frequent sexual encounters, have come to define ChemSex as more pervasive than drug use trends of the past.” That’s clearly a distressing thought for anyone in the gay community. Do you think that community is facing another disaster unless an uncomfortable truth is faced? “There are indeed some uncomfortable truths that ChemSex raises for gay communities. Our relationship to sex, sexual identity and community may need to be looked at. The ‘scenes’ created by my own generation of gay men who fought through an AIDS epidemic and fought so defiantly and proudly for equal rights, may not be the most conducive to the wellbeing of a younger generation of gay men, dealing with different risks, stigmas and realities. A generation who seek a different definition of sexual liberation, identity or community – and this might be an upsetting truth. The risk of significant harm is worrying and for too many individuals whose lives have been destroyed by ice or GHB, well it is a disaster for them. HIV rates continue to rise amongst gay men, despite the availability of excellent sexual health services, campaigns and initiatives.” The Secret MENS Business website: https://thesecretmensbusiness.podomatic.net The Secret MENS Business podcast: Spotify iTunes Google Manager Amazon Music Podomatic - https://thesecretmensbusiness.podomatic.com The Secret MENS Business Facebook group (MEN Only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/secretmensbusiness01 Secret MENS Business Podcast Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/projectselfacceptance Instagram: secretmensbusiness_smb

This week we're taking it back to one of those assigned reading classics, The Great Gatsby. Author David Stuart MacLean talks about how he incorporated aspects of this novel into his work, How I Learned to Hate in Ohio, and took it all in a new direction. Add in xenophobia, rural Ohio in the 1980s, a teenage boy, and the Challenger disaster, and you've got yourself one crazy book. Along the way we talk about reckoning with the sins of your childhood, the soullessness of high school, writing during a pandemic, and what we miss when we learn about The Great Gatsby. Celebrate this novel entering the public domain by listening to the episode! El machacón estribillo declara lo siguiente: “Remember me, hear my plea, time's drawing nigh for me to die...”. “Torture, waiting to die, torment, you scream and you cry, evil, in my eyes, death... in the black of the night”. Hallows Eve no inventaron nada.

In a very frank, honest and enlightening interview, Diggory and Cate speak with David Stuart about Chemsex - a drug-use epidemic specific to the gay community. Attributed to coining the term, David details what Chemsex is, delves into his own experience of partaking in Chemsex during the late 1990s and early 2000s and theorises as to why it's a phenomenon affecting gay men in particular. As well as speaking about Chemsex, David outlines what implementations he believes we should incorporate into our sex education, such as teaching people about the potentially life changing drugs PEP and PREP.The Real Sex Education is presented by Diggory Waite and Cate Campbell and produced by Andy Goddard, with special thanks this week to John Wakefield.Cate Campbell's blogpost with further thoughts on this episode can be found at https://catecampbell.wordpress.com/?p=274David Stuart's own website can be found at https://www.davidstuart.org/The following links are provided to direct listeners to support websites which deal with topics discussed during the show. The Eddystone Trust:https://www.eddystone.org.uk/chemsex-supportSex Health Wellbeing:https://s-x.scot/We Are With You:https://www.wearewithyou.org.uk/help-and-advice/advice-you/chemsex-how-stay-safer/PEP:https://www.tht.org.uk/hiv-and-sexual-health/pep-post-exposure-prophylaxis-hivThe Real Sex Education is a Hat Trick Podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This next instalment in our Sex & Relationships Seriesis a stunning episode that brings us into dialogue with some of the most important, yet often-ignored, parts of the human condition. You might not've heard about Chemsex, but it's a growing epidemic that's not only destroying lives, but which also tells us a lotabout how we think, feel and talk about sex. So we went to the man who created the term 'Chemsex' in the first place – David Stuart of the world-renowned 56 Dean Street Clinic. He's an epidemiologist, activist, former addict and drug-dealer who's now invited by healthcare professionals from around the world to advise them on how to tackle Chemsex in their communities. So what is Chemsex? At first Andrea and Jon assumed it simply meant taking drugs in the context of sex, which would surely include alcohol, MDMA, or even psychedelics. But soon they discovered this isn't what the label 'Chemsex' was coined to describe at all. Instead, it describes a specific, widespread and deeply disturbing phenomenon that involves addiction, hook-up culture, self-understanding, social prejudice, internalised homophobia and the profound isolation of modern life. In many ways, Chemsex vividly lays bare the hangups we all experience in relation to finding, having, and understanding sex. This episode certainly isn't specifically or only about gay sex, drug use, or addiction. It's about the fundamental psychology of sex; what it means to be vulnerable; and how we can allowourselves to enjoy who we are and express that sexually with others. Dating apps (check out our episodeon them) have played a major role in the spread of chems and Chemsex, but as with the apps themselves, they arguably reveal our problems rather than creating new ones. So why do people take drugs in the context of sex? There's as many reasons for using drugs as there are fingerprints on the planet – David Stuart Chems make anxiety and insecurity go away. Chems can make you feel like a god with near-limitless energy and have you careening from sex partner to sex party for literally days on end.Chems take away the doubt, the negative voices in your head telling you you're not in good enough shape, or that the person you're with isn't really into you. Or they simply allow you to feel you deservesex or deserveto enjoy pleasure, free from a mind buzzing with questions like 'Am I clean down there? Who's going to be top and bottom? Can I keep it up? Am I doing this right?' What world have you [been living] in that the definition of 'good sex' is 'a performance that manages to avoid any rejection'? But a lot of the guys that I talk to do struggle with the disinhibitions that we deserve to feel when we're having sex. – David Stuart But this isn't a conversation in which we simply assume that drugs are bad; what's important here is to understand what people's relationshipswith particular drugs are, how they fit into their lives, their work, and their sense of self. Our challenge is to do so with compassion and understanding – something David is particularly well-equipped to do. David's own life story means that he's no distant observer of these issues. He's both open and remarkably insightful about his own chem use and HIV status; his history as an escort and a drug dealer; as well as his continuing personal work to move beyond the homophobic attitudes which he internalised growing up. He's been through the fire, but now, tempered by those experiences, he's using what he learnt for the benefit of others. The reason I stopped doing drugs is not because I identified as an addict or they became really problematic for me [...] it was because I had this realisation that some of the people I was playing with... I was damaging them. I think I was playing a role in a journey they were on towards chaos and harm. And I suddenly realised after years of this – way too late – that I wasn't an island. I was impacting other people. And resilient as I might be, others weren't. That was the reason I stopped. – David Stuart The legacy of gay liberation and the AIDS epidemic means that talking about Chemsex at allcan be deeply painful for older gay men, because in the eyes of some commentators, it can make homosexuality seem dangerous and unclean all over again. Many who fought for gay liberation would rather label Chemsex 'a drug problem', but ultimately it's more than that: it's a symptom of a much deeper set of problems. With chems, as David puts it, 'We're trying to medicate something we're finding difficult to manage in our bedrooms or in our intimate lives...'. David's honesty, insight and eloquence bowled us over; we learnt a lot from him, not only in terms of raw information, but about how to approach so many issues around sex with compassion. Being prescriptive and judgemental is not going to help any of us, and David reminds us that we must always leave space for mistakes and not judge ourselves (or others) too harshly when those mistakes inevitably happen. As he puts it, for healthcare providers, We'll always do our jobs better if really understand the humanityof the 'foolish' mistakes we make in bed – David Stuart Jon also shares his own experiences, mistakes, misunderstandings and hard-to-shake prejudices, as well as whether he feels that the history of AIDS and gay liberation is truly 'his' history, when he never had to experience any of it directly. And, in the end, we all agree that 'kindness will solve Chemsex'. Also Including: Internalised homophobia and self-bullying Why is unprotected sex 'cool' again? Insecurities, traumas, and sex When cruelty is a form of coping Drugs and sex cultures around the world New tagline: Be Kinder on Grindr! Find Out More: David's interactive care plan, and his website David's YouTube playlistabout sex, chems and everything in between The Vice documentary, Chemsex Support and information on Chemsex from 56 Dean Street Dr Gabor Maté's work on addiction Be Silly. WARNING: Strictly Adult ContentThe movie ChemSex shocked the world – highlighting in graphic detail, the sexual connection that gay men have to meth. James Doty, Acting Commissioner of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) was once asked if the Board or its sub-committee which handles audits was a part of a company’s internal financial controls. He answered that yes, he believed that was one of the roles of an Audit Committee or full Board. I had never thought of the Board as an internal control but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it was an important insight for any Chief Compliance Officer or compliance practitioner as it also applies as a compliance internal control. In the FCPA Guidance, in the Ten Hallmarks of an Effective Compliance Program, there are two specific references to the obligations of a Board. The first in Hallmark No. 1 , which states, “Within a business organization, compliance begins with the board of directors and senior executives setting the proper tone for the rest of the company.” The second is found under Hallmark No. 3, entitled “Oversight, Autonomy and Resources”, where it discusses that the CCO should have “direct access to an organization’s governing authority, such as the board of directors and committees of the board of directors (e.g., the audit committee).” Further, under the US Sentencing Guidelines, the Board must exercise reasonable oversight on the effectiveness of a company’s compliance program. The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Prosecution Standards posed the following queries: (1) Do the Directors exercise independent review of a company’s compliance program? and (2) Are Directors provided information sufficient to enable the exercise of independent judgment? Doty’s remarks drove home to me the absolute requirement for Board participation in any best practices or even effective anti-corruption compliance program. Board liability for its failure to perform its assigned function in any compliance program is well known. David Stuart, an attorney with Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, noted that FCPA compliance issues can lead to personal liability for directors, as both the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and DOJ have been “very vocal about their interest in identifying the highest-level individuals within the organization who are responsible for the tone, culture, or weak internal controls that may contribute to, or at least fail to prevent, bribery and corruption”. He added that based upon the SEC’s enforcement action against two senior executives at Nature’s Sunshine Products, “Under certain circumstances, I could see the SEC invoking the same provisions against audit committee members—for instance, for failing to oversee implementation of a compliance program to mitigate risk of bribery”. It would not be too far a next step for the SEC to invoke the same provisions against audit committee members who do not actively exercise oversight of an ongoing compliance program. Further, the SEC has made clear that it believes a Board should take a more active role in overseeing the management of risk within a company. The SEC has promulgated Regulation SK 407 under which each company must make a disclosure regarding the Board’s role in risk oversight which “may enable investors to better evaluate whether the board is exercising appropriate oversight of risk.” If this disclosure is not made, it could be a securities law violation and subject the company, which fails to make it, to fines, penalties or profit disgorgement. I believe that a Board must not only have a corporate compliance program in place but actively oversee that function. Further, if a company’s business plan includes a high-risk proposition, there should be additional oversight. In other words, there is an affirmative duty to ask the tough questions. But it is more than simply having a compliance program in place. The Board must exercise appropriate oversight of the compliance program and indeed the compliance function. The Board needs to ask the hard questions and be fully informed of the company’s overall compliance strategy going forward. A Board’s oversight is part of effective compliance controls, then the failure to do so may result in something far worse than bad governance. Such inattention could directly lead to a FCPA violation and could even form the basis of an independent SOX violation as to the Board. Three Key Takeaways A Board must engage in active oversight. A Board should review the design of internal controls on a regular basis. Failure to do so could form the basis for an independent legal violation under SOX. Learn more about your ad choices. What are the obligations of a Board member regarding the FCPA? Are the obligations of the Compliance Committee under the FCPA at odds with a director’s “prudent discharge of duties to shareholders”? Do the words prudent discharge even appear anywhere in the FCPA? In webinar, entitled “Reporting to the Board on Your Compliance Program: New Guidance and Good Practices”, Rebecca Walker and Jeffery Kaplan, explored these and other issues. As to the specific role of ‘Best Practices’ in the area of general compliance and ethics, Walker looked to Delaware corporate law for guidance. She cited to the case of Stone v. Ritter for the proposition that “a duty to attempt in good faith to assure that a corporate information and reporting system, which the board concludes is adequate exists.” From the case of In re Walt Disney Company Derivative Litigation, she drew the principle that directors should follow the best practices in the area of ethics and compliance. In a recent Compliance Week article, Melissa Aguilar examined the duties of Board members regarding FCPA compliance. The conclusions of several of the FCPA experts that Ms. Aguilar interviewed for the article were that companies which have not yet had any FCPA issues rise up to the Board level are usually the ones which are the most at risk. Albert Vondra, a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers stated that such companies “don’t have the incentive to spend the resources or take the rigorous approach to their anti-compliance programs. Their attitude is, ‘We’ve got it covered,’ but they don’t”. Richard Cassin, managing partner of Cassin Law, stated that there must be written records demonstrating that the audit committee and that the board members asked questions and received answers regarding FCPA compliance issues. Such documentation demonstrates the Board members have “fulfilled their fiduciary obligations,” Cassin says. Board failure to head this warning can lead to serious consequences. David Stuart, a senior attorney with Cravath Swaine & Moore, noted that FCPA compliance issues can lead to personal liability for directors, as both the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and DOJ have been “very vocal about their interest in identifying the highest-level individuals within the organization who are responsible for the tone, culture, or weak internal controls that may contribute to, or at least fail to prevent, bribery and corruption”. He added that based upon the SEC’s enforcement action against two senior executives at Nature’s Sunshine, “Under certain circumstances, I could see the SEC invoking the same provisions against audit committee members—for instance, for failing to oversee implementation of a compliance program to mitigate risk of bribery”. According to Haynes and Boone in its publication, “Corporate Governance and the Role of the Board” a board’s role is not to actually manage the company, but instead to oversee and monitor the management of the company. In the realm of compliance, this means the Chief Compliance Officer. The board has the responsibility to fulfill the role of strategic and business advisor to management of the company. In addition, the board has the role of monitoring the performance of the compliance function, including monitoring the performance of it using customary economic metrics, and by overseeing compliance with applicable laws and regulations. While the board is not responsible for auditing or ferreting out compliance problems, it is responsible for determining that the company has an appropriate system of internal controls. The board should also monitor company policies and practices that address compliance and matters affecting the public perception and reputation of the company. Every company should ensure that it conducts appropriate compliance training for employees and conducts regular compliance assessments. Finally, the board must take appropriate action if and when it becomes aware of a material problem that it believes management is not properly handling. Alas, there is no reference to prudent discharge in the FCPA itself. However, if I were a remaining member of the Board of China Northeast Petroleum, I might well think more than twice about my prudent discharge of duties to the shareholders as both the DOJ and SEC now might well wish to look into this matter under a Board’s prudent discharge of duties under the FCPA. Three Key Takeaways What is ‘prudent discharge’? What is your process for doing compliance at the Board level? A Board must have active rather than passive engagement around compliance. This is a podcast I certainly thoroughly enjoyed recording and it’s one I’m definitely going to listen to again. There’s a lot of information on here that I’ll need to go over, but ultimately, I think it’s a podcast that if you take the time to understand what’s been spoken about and actually apply the things that are said, it can make a dramatic change to one’s health, to your own life and of course your longevity and quality of life moving forward. I think it’s that big a topic. The topic at hand is going to be pretty much with the microbiome, gut health. Our awesome guest today is Dr. David Perlmutter. If you’re unaware of David, David is a board-certified neurologist and a fellow of the American College of Nutrition. I almost didn’t get my words out there. He’s been interviewed by many national syndicated radios and television programs, including Larry King Live, CNN, Fox News, Fox and Friends, the Today’s Show. He’s been on Oprah, Dr. Oz, the CBS Early Show. He is actually medical advisor to the Dr. Oz Show. Yes, we were very grateful for David to come on and give up an hour of his time and share his absolute wealth of knowledge with us today. He’s written a couple of awesome books in Grain Brain. He’s got a brand-new book out called the Brain Maker which is what we generally talk about today. That’s obviously the brain and gut connection. The cornerstone of Dr. Perlmutter’s approach to neurological disorders has been founded in the principles of you could say preventative medicine, which is why we’re super excited to have him on. He has brought public awareness now to a rich understanding that challenging brain [00:02:00] problems include Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia, depression, ADHD may very well be prevented … All these things with lifestyle changes. Think about that for a moment, including a gluten-free, low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, coupled with exercise and aerobic exercise. Anyway, strap yourself in. This is fantastic. How are you? Guy:Our fantastic guest today is Dr. David Perlmutter. David, welcome to the show. David:I’m delighted to be here, gentlemen. Guy:It’s fantastic. We’ve been following your work for some time now and be able to expose us to the Aussie audience, I’m very excited about. With that mind, would you mind, for our listeners if they haven’t been exposed to your work before, just sharing a little bit about yourself and what you do? David:I’d be delighted. I’m a brain specialist. I’m a neurologist, and that probably doesn’t explain what I do. I’m very much involved in various lifestyle factors as they affect the brain, as they affect human physiology, and really have begun exploring well beyond the brain, [00:04:00] what are we doing to ourselves in terms of the foods that we eat, both positive and negative? More recently, how are our food choices and other lifestyle choices affecting the microbiome, affecting the 100 trillion organisms that live within us because we now recognize that those organisms are playing a pivotal role in terms of determining whether we are healthy or not. That’s pretty much in a nutshell what I do. Guy:There you go. Stuart:Fantastic. We first heard about you, David, when you wrote the book, Grain Brain which was fantastic. For me, I think it was important because we heard a lot of stories and press about grains and how they’re making us fat and they’re ruining our health. Other ways made the connection of it’s grains … I’m okay with grains. I don’t get any gut ache. I don’t get any gastrointestinal issues, but I never thought about it from a brain perspective. I just wondered if you could share just a little bit about why you wrote Grain Brain, what inspired you to write it? David:Stuart, the real impetus behind Grain Brain was for the very first time, I thought it was critical for a brain specialist to take a position of prevention, of looking at the idea that these devastating brain conditions that I’m dealing with on a daily basis, autistic children, adults with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, you name it, that some of these issues are preventable, and that really flies in the face of pretty much mainstream doctrine. It is going against the grain, if you will which it seems to fit. It became very clear to me that our best peer-reviewed, well-respected literature [00:06:00] has been publishing information not only about gluten but about more generally, carbohydrates and sugar for a couple of decades, and no one has paid any attention. It’s been published, but I really found that somebody needed to step forward and make that information known to the general public. I began implementing these practices in my clinical practice in treating patients day to day and began seeing really remarkable results. That is what got behind me writing the book, Grain Brain, really exploring how sugar, carbohydrates and gluten are absolutely toxic for the brain. Ultimately that book was translated into 27 languages and is published worldwide. The message has really gotten out there. I’m very proud of that. These are people reading the book that I will never see and yet, I know the information that they’re gleaning from reading this book is going to help them, and it makes me feel good at the end of the day in terms of what I’m doing. In 2002, David Stuart MacLean snapped into consciousness on a train platform in India -- but he didn't know that at the time. He had no idea where he was... or who he was. He was told he was having a bad drug trip, and he believed it; the truth was that an anti-malarial medication called Lariam had slipped from his bloodstream into his brain with catastrophic effects. The Answer to the Riddle Is Me is MacLean's story of trying to piece his life back together... or, perhaps, to start over.
David Stuart gives a talk at the SUSY-Recast workshop.
