[This Episode's crew: Stoy Prioleau, Joey Svendsen, Ellen Mauro, Hayne Griffin]Stoy and Joey have lost all hope in the government, not voting for any presidential candidate, Hayne and Ellen didn't get the results they wanted, it affected Ellen deeply. Joey feels guilty about his emotional-less relationship with politics, recognizing his privilege likely plays a part in this. Ellen is frustrated with compassionate people who don't vote, like Joey and Stoy and fears the worst with this second Trump presidency. Hayne doesn't think the extant of Ellen's fears are warranted and Stoy doesn't understand why Ellen has any hope in the system, in the first place. Joey asks Ellen how she'd have reacted if one of the guys voted for Trump, Ellen has plans of starting a "white women only" group, hoping to rally "her kind" (not her words) to be proactive in fighting against the racism and misogyny she believes Trump voters have turned a blind eye to. The four also discuss the nuance of good people being on both sides of the political aisle. [This episode, produced by Joey Svendsen, has Ellen Mauro, Jed Payne, Joey Svendsen, and special guest and original host to the show, Jared Svendsen]Televangelists like Kenneth Copeland's behavior don't appear reflective of God by any means, and it certainly seems as if people are being led astray by the sort of prosperity gospel teaching he espouses. However, there seems to be more to Mr. Copeland's story and it's difficult ruling out just plain 'ol evil. Thus, Ellen, Jed, Jared and Joey do not.The four also get an update from their good friend and co-host of the show, Hayne Griffen, a firefighter in Asheville NC smack dab in the middle of search and recovery, trying to help put the pieces of his community back together. Lastly, Ellen finally gets to push back on the pushback she has received thus far to her plans to visit a medium to investigate talking to the dead. From a discussion on the rapid transition of the 1980s glam metal scene, to a complete Seattle Grunge-takeover in the early 1990s, to a reading of journal entries about my (Joey) mental health crisis, this time 5 years ago. Listeners are also treated by hearing clips of the brand new single by our very own Robbie Madison called "I Lost My Friend," this song partly inspired by seeing his friend Joey (me) Svendsen walk through that very same mental health crisis 5 years ago. [This episode is produced by Stoy Prioleau and hosted by Joey Svendsen, Amy Alderman, Ellen Mauro, Liz Miller]Birthed out of the discussion in "episode 36: generation z people, trans people and those gay olympic ceremonies," in this episode, Joey shares how he posted some sentiments on that archaic social networking platform, Facebook, fairly certain the straight-forwardness of its message to fellow Christians in regards to Jesus' radical message of love. Numerous comments on the post however highlighted some very different takes on how a Christ-follower is to reflect the gospel. Joey, Amy, Liz and Ellen talk about here what seems to be two very opposing views amongst Christians about what "Christ's love" for the world should look like amongst the body of believers. As the four discuss, it seems that certain actions and words the hosts see as "peeing on the gospel" of radical love, many other christians see as "taking stands" for what is good and right. Joey's Facebook post reflected on the outrage by many christians on the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics. He expressed the potential delight it would be to see all Christians truly serving and loving how he personally believes Jesus is calling all Christians to love. It says the following: "I've made some of the biggest screw ups of all, so I totally understand the whole “he who is without sin cast the first stone” concept and how it plays out here. But man, it's so hard to see the church miss the mark on the very basics of the Christian faith. TBH, I think it's debatable whether this is Christian persecution in the first place, but wouldn't it be so refreshing to see brothers & sisters all over the world actually loving their neighbors & not having such a short fuse with stuff that rubs them the wrong way? Is it fear? Have we not been perfected by love? HAHA, let's bring those WWJD bracelets back."Get The B-Sides Feed Facebook Discussion Group here.E-mail the PWNA team here.Theme Song, other Music by Stoy Prioleau (aka: Riggy Rock): Apple MusicOther music: Mechanical River.Send a text to the crew (we may read these on air)Host and producer, Joey Svendsen also hosts and produces two other podcasts, coming more from the church world:Seacoast Church's Things You Won't Hear on Sunday Podcast &The Endurance Factor Podcast Other podcasts affiliated with co-hosts of PWNA:Jed's Church & Other DrugsMatt's The Great Deconstruction
[Recorded on the evening of July 15 2024, in this episode: Joey Svendsen, Ellen Mauro, Matt Oxley, Stoy Prioleau]What does it say about the heart of a human being when one celebrates the demise of an enemy? Is that a deficiency of something one should be praying for God's help about, or is such a celebration ever celebration-worthy? The crew discuss their thoughts on the assassination attempt to Donald Trump, bat around some conspiratorial considerations surrounding the deal, and delve into deeper heart issues including their own when it comes to the suffering and demise of enemies. The top of the episode consists of catching up with Ellen (link to her TikTok), as it has been a while. Please listen at your own risk, as the content on this one is very heavy.[hosts contributing on this episode: Joey Svendsen, Ellen Mauro, Hayne Griffen]Joey had a seizure a couple of weeks ago and his friends' security camera captured it all. With "firefighter Hayne" present, we learn a bit more about seizures but we also hear some horror stories he's seen on the job as a rescue worker. Oh, and Ellen thought her son was dead for a few seconds. Along the way, the conversation expands to the usual chit chat about everything, from how the younger generation talks about TikTok like it's the creator of all entertainment, how Ellen is still happily sober, when complementing a woman turns into hitting on her, why true crime entertainment is so alluring, and why Ellen feels compelled to subject herself to footage of the horrors going on in the war around Palestine. Kicking off a 4-part series for the month of October, sexuality, self-worth and image, the brutality of breast cancer and what it's like not to desire sex, all through the life experiences of women (but of course!). Today, co-hosts of the show, Ellen Mauro, Amy Alderman and Liz Miller discuss what pop culture currently deems as the ideal female body type, whether women always care about having sex appeal and if culture is dictating the whole "as men get older, they become more distinguished and as women age, less sexy and desirable" narrative. All three ladies describe with great candor their own struggle with body image, especially as they age. Special thanks to them for that. Are women competitive with one another? Is it unnerving that statistically, as men get older they always find girls in their early 20s the most appealing sexually? Does culture now accept the sexual objectification of men? Oh, and guys being more visual than women? That may just be a myth. It's "A Woman's Body Month" on Pastor With No Answers Podcast. The conversation continues throughout the month: "Asexuality" with Rachel Meyers of Your Favorite Heretics (Oct. 11th) "Brutality of Breast Cancer" with co-host Hayne and his wife, Erica (Oct 18th)"Woman Sexuality" with Erica Smith (Oct 25th) Love the show? Ellen Mauro has found great recent success in medicating her AD/HD. She also got Joey to watch a documentary called "We've Got to Talk About Cosby," which chronicles the twisted and dark life of Bill Cosby, all along while the cultural icon is considered heroic by millions of fans. Now having watched the documentary, Joey can never enjoy The Cosby Show again. Stoy, Ellen and Joey discuss evil in the context of mental illness and they look at the nuances involved in separating good art from an evil artist. Lastly, Joey and Ellen learn about Stoy's superpower. For Part II of the episode, John Mark Mcmillan and Joey discuss their journey of judging people less, the older they get. John Mark ran into a famous Mega Church Pastor in an airplane who is a big fan of of John Mark's music, the two of them now friends. Originally aired 7/8/2021. For additional context, listen to the whole episode as it was originally aired RIGHT HERE.As originally posted. While some people call ProGrace.org “pro-life lite,” others label it as teetering on pro-choice. Angie Weszely and her organization (Pro-Grace) takes heat from both sides, and as you'll hear in this episode, she doesn't believe Jesus would own either label. He always starts with grace, and this seems to be something unfortunately lacking in many hearts of those in the pro-life camp. Co-host Ellen Mauro, who considers herself a “pro-life liberal” and one who is pro-life but votes pro-choice, joins us to talk about perhaps the most polarizing and potentially heated issues of the century. ProGrace.org is a movement that offers training and other resources founded on a belief for God to give us a creative solution based on His wisdom and provision - and His love for BOTH the woman and the child.Angie Weszely / Twitter / SiteJoey Svendsen / Instagram / Twitter / FacebookEllen Mauro / InstagramJoin Bear W/ Community (a community for PWNA patrons)Read About / Join / VideoWelcome PacketSocials / Connect:PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupPodcast WebsiteYouTubeE-mail us for correspondence.ThanksTheme song and all music, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends.Support the show

Were church leaders reckless, using little wisdom when standing up for and “teaching truth?” Was it an accident so many of us were messed up in the process? Co-hosts Ellen Mauro, Hayne Griffen, and Joey Svendsen mourn the lack of love and wisdom seen in church's approach to sexuality and youth, it's reluctancy to even love those with other views, and it's impulse to beat the mess out of some one who is not "one of us" any more. My journey is full of changes in how I see God, faith, the Church and spirituality in general. I have also found church family amongst people who would be labeled "evangelical" by most. That's why as I mourn the hypocrisy in the "capital C church," I also cannot help but to speak on behalf of people who i have often seen live with good intent, bringing forth a lot of goodness and hope into the world. But it's tiring to see the church act more like Judas than Jesus; and even more bothersome? We're being desensitized as we watch the church claim "Jesus as Lord," without following in His footsteps of love. This is a false claim and is ruining the credibility of gospel and thus the church. -- JoeyRobbie Madison “The Way that You Love” single / Spotify / Apple Music Joey Svendsen / Instagram / Twitter / FacebookEllen Mauro / InstagramBear W/ Community Read About / Join / Raffle / Welcome Packet Raffle Bear W// Community VideoCLICK HERE to receive updates on all the "Bear W/ Going On's" texted right to you from Remind. What if in the "Genesis 1 beginning," things had already began? What if the infamous, "In the Beginning" beginning, happens to be about one small area, guarded by an angel (Garden of Eden). S. Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD, author of The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science of Universal Ancestry, challenges widely-held presuppositions held about the Genesis creation story and has put his tenure on the line for being forthright with the role that his faith plays in how he sees the world. In this episode he talks how a plain reading of Genesis can still be supported by science. Oh yeah, and he believes in evolution. But according to Dr. Swamidass, humans still lack amazement for the good stuff. How are we not more fascinated by existence in general? Or the existence of consciousness? He demonstrates well the ability to maintain what most of his atheist colleagues would call "good science" while still being a self-proclaimed, "Christian first, scientist second" person. And while he's here, we also manage to talk conspiracies, AI, Mars exploration and how it's hard to get ethics out of science, especially in regards to abortion. At top of episode, Jack Hoey and Ellen Mauro defend some very cynical comments they made on a previous episode about speaking in tongues. Chip Judd challenges their views on a means of prayer he practices every day and claims to be why he is the man he is today. [Episode is Rated R and contains offensive language, including slang for female body parts. Last thing we desire is for folks to be uncomfortable, triggered or offended. Please proceed with caution]Co-hosts Ryan Amick and Ellen Mauro discuss some new territory on a common theme we have on this show: PC Culture. Why is Ryan (a white, straight male) sad about not being able to say certain words? Ellen expresses skepticism for Ryan and Joey's fear of being cancelled and wonders what that would even look like for two guys who aren't really famous. Along the way, Joey thinks he found a “female counterpart” for the word “dick,” and don't worry, it's not the “p-word.” Could humans be more forgiving with people's words? Is it a thing of the past to have public, "non-cancelling" spaces for those who are genuinely ignorant but open to learning? Or what about those who truly make a mistake but have sincere regret? We discuss all this and end on the sad note of how Bill Cosby broke our damn hearts. James Wellman with us today to talk about his newest book, High on God: How Mega Churches Have Won the Heart of America. Most would have Wellman in the "progressive Christian" camp, he began his research assuming his cynicism about Mega Churches would be vindicated and that he'd find that these things should go away for good. Instead, he discovered that Mega Churches generally provide a healthy sense of belonging to its members and typically contribute a lot of good into their surrounding communities. Do these churches help meet emotional needs? Are evangelicals a more generous bunch than their progressive counterparts? Here's a very practical and simple explanation for keeping Mega Churches around. At the top of the episode, Matt Oxley, Ellen Mauro and Joey Svendsen discuss their former fundamentalism, why Matt's not a Christian anymore and why a "universalistic salvation" evangelistic message would be the most effective gospel message, even if it wasn't true. We all know people can survive to the next day, without having sex of any kind. But in a romantic relationship, is sex an integral part of getting close? What if sex is physically impossible? The good stuff people are looking for in "sexual intimacy," can it also be found in non-sexual acts that are exclusive to our partner? Ellen doesn't really care about having sex. Joey likes sex but he is getting old, so he likes it less. Hayne likes sex, but his lovely wife is going through chemo treatments, so it's been a bit bare. Joey is feeling like an out of touch, inappropriate at times, old grandpa. Talking it over with co-hosts Ellen Mauro and Jed Payne, the question at hand is: does the woke culture need to wake up and stop some of its irrational shananigans or does Joey just need to catch up and grow up? Mennonite Pastor, Duke Graduate and author, Melissa Florer-Bixler, talks about her newly released book, How to Have an Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace. She explains why she is an "empathy skeptic" and how she can have rage for some one like President Trump while still wanting him to be free, as there's no healing that comes from a desire to see one punished. She poses an important question: what are some justice-related issues that Christians can agree to disagree on and what issues are universally intolerable and incongruent to the gospel of Jesus Christ? “We need a radical reorientation to the reign of God.” -- MelissaThat sounds beautiful, doesn't it? Umm, YES. At the top of the episode, Joey, Ellen Mauro and Hayne Griffin discuss their issues with the word "heresy" and how the bible isn't age-appropriate for kids. Mennonite Pastor, Duke Graduate and author, Melissa F-B, joins to talk about what she calls “reproductive justice.” Is a living embryo an actual living person? Is it mere tissue waste? “No” and “no,” according to Melissa. We discuss these matters and reflect on a truth that many evangelical Christians do not want to face: their pro-life stances are actually conditional and far from consistent. Just ask a beautiful (and desperate) couple who went the in vitro fertilization route, were successful, but have additional frozen embryos that will never be used. What does a consistent pro-life stance look like and what sorts of hypocrisies are currently rampant in those who claim pro-life? Within discussions along these lines, is there an important distinction between human life and personhood? At the top of the episode, Joey talks with friends Ellen Mauro and Hayne Griffen about whether the "woke culture" wants to eliminate gender differences. Joey embarrassingly reflects on how he didn't want his son to say "whoopsies" back in 2012 because it sounded too feminine and Ellen doesn't let her daughter say "panties." While some people call ProGrace.org “Pro-Life Lite,” others label it as teetering on pro-choice. Angie Weszely and her organization (Pro-Grace) takes heat from both sides, and as you'll hear in this episode, Angie doesn't believe Jesus would own either label. ProGrace.org is a movement that offers training and other resources founded on a belief for God to give us a creative solution based on His wisdom and provision - and His love for BOTH the woman and the child.[Preview in Intro] of Pro-Choice or Pro-Life (Part 2): Melissa Florer-BixlerAngie Weszely: https://twitter.com/angieweszelyhttps://prograce.org/Ellen Mauro:https://www.instagram.com/ellenmauroJoey/PWNA Instagram: www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee giving opportunity: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsSupport Us:Join us as a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapodor leave a Venmo tip right @ https://venmo.com/joey-svendsenJoin the discussion:https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalkSocials:https://twitter.com/joeysvendsenhttps://www.facebook.com/PWNApodE-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence.Music on this episode courtesy of Derek Minor: http://www.derekminor.comOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton + friendshttps://mechanicalriver.bandcamp.com/http://embassyfreqs.com/Executive Producer of PWNApod: Jared SvendsenSupport the show
Christianity Today released episode one of a podcast series that narrates and reflects on the rise and fall of the late Mars Hill Church in Seattle, formerly led by Pastor Mark Driscoll. Dr. Tony Jones (former friend of Mark Driscoll), who appears on this documentary, joins us alongside Ellen Mauro (remained a part of the Mars Hill Church family until the very end) and Jack Hoey (former admirer of Mark Driscoll) to discuss the content of this new documentary series. Are pastors with similar track records as Driscoll's, aware of the harm they are causing? Are they hearing from God? If not, do they believe they are? Did anything good happen at Mars Hill Church, considering what we now know? We reflect on these questions and propose a few more: If one is known for his charisma, should this disqualify her from leading a church? Is evangelicalism's main vehicle entrepreneurialism? So many people who loved and sacrificed for the church community of Mars Hill are still hurting to this day. Many of them are still asking, “How did I not see what was really happening?”Podcast being discussed in this episode: https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/podcasts/rise-and-fall-of-mars-hill/Dr. Tony Jones: https://reverendhunter.com/Ellen Mauro: https://www.instagram.com/ellenmauroJack Hoey: @jackthelesser (twitter and Instagram) Joey/PWNA Instagram: www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee giving opportunity: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelps Support Us: Join us as a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod or leave a Venmo tip right @ https://venmo.com/joey-svendsen Join the discussion:https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk Socials:https://twitter.com/pwnapodhttps://twitter.com/joeysvendsenhttps://www.facebook.com/PWNApod E-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence. Today's guest, Brant Hansen, wrote a book called “Unoffendable.” He suggests that the idea of having “righteous anger” is a myth and not biblical. There's much peace to be found by recognizing the jacked up state of this world and adjusting expectations accordingly. And it's the right way, according to Brant. Guest co-host Jory Micah provides some valuable pushback to round out the discussion. What about Jesus flipping tables? What about the pissed off prophets? What about the mother of an innocently slain child? At the beginning of the episode, Ellen Mauro, Jack Hoey III and Joey discuss ableism as Joey thinks society as a whole is way too sensitive about the use of words. Our guest does not call this suicide, nor labels as euthanasia. Working with Compassion and Choices, Rev. Madison Shockley advocates for the humane option for the terminally ill to choose the means and timing of their impending death. Rather than facing the prospect of a ruthless and painful journey leading to the end, he advocates for freedom and peace that comes by giving them the driver seat of when and how they will die. You'll be hard-pressed to find a more gracious, loving and biblically sound outlook on this endeavor that is now legalized in numerous American States. We discuss real-life instances in which people have benefitted from this option and how one goes about ending his or her life with this medical aid. We also dissect evangelically-postured objections to one being able to take the timing of death into his own hands. Before any of this, Ellen Mauro, Jack Hoey III and Joey discuss and debate spanking kids and reflect on parenting children as an Enneagram 5.Compassion and Choices:https://compassionandchoices.org/ Ellen Mauro: @ellenmauroJack Hoey III: @JackthelesserJoey/PWNA Instagram: www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsGet notifications each time we start raising money to get more information on our current opportunity to “save the day” for team humanity. We're in an age now where atrocities at the hands of Christian leaders are the norm. Unspeakable hypocrisy, abuse and scandal. On this episode we discuss the current state of evangelicalism and the church, we process the recent news on Ravi Zacharias' abuses on women and reflect on the actions and downfalls of other pastors, including Ellen Mauro's and Joey's former pastor, Mark Driscoll. Joey and his wife Pricilla also went to Hooters in Charlotte NC. Still negatively affected days after, Joey recounts the archaic and disheartening environment they found themselves in while he enjoyed some decently good wings. Hemant Mehta has a calling to open people’s eyes to the atrocities coming from the Christian church. As always, “The Friendly Atheist” is friendly, fair, insightful, eloquent in his observations and brings to the table many things to learn from. He points out the fallacy of Christians being persecuted under Democratic Presidents and makes a claim that most American stories of “Christian persecution” are skewed to fit the “every one is against Christians” narrative. We talk about whether morality can exist outside of God, and Hemant argues that Christians themselves are subjective and selective in their assessment of “right and wrong.” At the top of the episode, John Mark McMillan, Ellen Mauro, and Joey Svendsen speak about police officers and “weaponizing black voices.” Hamant Mehta: @hemantmehta https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/ John Mark McMillan: @johnmarkmc, https://www.johnmarkmcmillan.com/ Follow this podcast: FB, T and I: PWNApod Join the discussion: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk Follow Joey on FB, T and I: @joeysvendsen e-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence Music courtesy of www.DerekMinor.com
My friend Pastor Colin Kerr wrote a book called “Faith Hope Love: The Essentials of Christianity for the Curious, Confused and Skeptical.” We talk about “essentials” in the context of denominations. Colin says, “A skeptic’s reasons for rejecting institutional Christianity might be, unbeknownst to them, more faithful to the nature of Kingdom Christianity than some claiming to be Christians themselves.” Bullseye. We talk a little about everything. Is it a win that many of these skeptics are leaving a misguided church? What does it mean for the bible to be authoritative? Is it fair to say love is more important than doctrine? This book is touted as concise in its content and interdenominational in its approach, a strong read for the curious, confused and/or skeptical.” At the top of the episode, John Mark McMillan, Ellen Mauro and myself talk about the tenacity of John’s daughter, TikTok and having patience and love towards unlovable people. Chip Judd and Jack Hoey, regulars on this podcast, have both been Christians for a long time and see prayer in very different lights. How much responsibility do we have to pray regularly and does God withhold blessings and provisions when we do not pray enough? Does God often communicate back to us? So many questions about prayer and we discuss many of them on this episode. At the top of the episode, Joey, Ellen Mauro and John Mark McMillan continue their conversation about porn and today specifically we discuss how significant the difference is between seeing naked bodies and watching sexual acts. Song you heard: The Lost Chorus is a collaboration between Alex Albert (Project 86, drums), Ryan Dennee (Stavesacre, guitar), Dirk Lemmenes (Stavesacre, bass) and Andy Zipf (vocals, guitar). In 2009, Alberts, Dennee and Lemmenes wrote several instrumental songs in a rehearsal space outside of Los Angeles. They reached out to Zipf, who added melodies, lyrics and some additional guitar parts. This resulted in a self produced and self titled EP released in 2011. In 2019, new material began to take shape, and a series of singles produced and mixed by Paul Fig (Deftones, Ghost, Alice in Chains) are now in process. The first song from this series, “Soft Lies” was released June 26, 2020. Find the Lost Chorus where ever you listen to your tunes.
[“demon talk” starts at 16 mark] Theologian, author and host of Reverend Hunter Podcast, Tony Jones joins Joey and one of our resident theologians, Jack Hoey, to share his view on this universe being “demon-less.” And if demons (and Satan) do not indeed exist, did Jesus think they did? How then was he tempted in the garden? If our battle isn’t “against flesh and blood,” who’s it against? We also have a conversation about the other side of the coin: what does it say about God if we do indeed live in a world where demons hate us, want to destroy us, and God can kill them but doesn’t? At home, at your local congregation and at that church in Corinth back in the day, Joey and Ellen Mauro (from Depolarize! Podcast) talk about women’s place in this world. Can they teach men? Chip Judd (30 years counseling experience) and Ellen Mauro (co-host of Depolarize!
