Since our hosts both fell in love with Turnstile in the past few years, we thought it was time to go back to the origins of hardcore and see what we've missed. We're starting with Black Flag's "Damaged" from 1981(!) This album's influence is undeniable, but does it hold up in 2026? Plus, new albums from Morrissey and Ye have us revisiting the age-old debate of what to do when your favorite artists seem to be awful humans. Along the way, we build a five-song playlist to renew your passion for music. What do you think of "Damaged" by Black Flag? Can you separate the art from the artist? What album should we review next? Let us know in the comments. Listen to the Extended Playlist (Spotify, YouTube):Like/follow/subscribe to Extended PlayJoin the Extended Family on Patreon for even more playlists

Just two guys, some birds, and a wide-ranging hang that covers self-obsession as the enemy of growth, the dork problem in modern podcasting, and why 14 years in, we're playing again. Then we roam: Geese, Turnstile, Mike D in a Malibu parking lot, Julie Piatt's Manger debut, Ed O'Brien of Radiohead in a church at SXSW, a joyride through Austin in the Rivian R2, the Dean Potter documentary, and Artemis II. Originally recorded as Matt Cohen's guest appearance on Mantle Mondays hosted by Amar Varma. In this special episode of Tank Talks, Matt Cohen joins Amar Varma on Mantle Mondays for a candid conversation about how to get VC funding in 2026, what early-stage investors actually look for, and where the next wave of breakout startups is being built. As the Founder and Managing Partner of Ripple Ventures, Matt shares his path from RBC trading desks and public markets to startup operating experience, angel investing, and eventually building one of Canada's most active early-stage venture firms. He breaks down how founders can stand out in a crowded market, why validated problems and technical execution matter more than hype, and what separates companies that can raise from companies that get left behind. The conversation also dives into how Matt evaluates founders before product-market fit, why recruiting ability and fundraising skill matter as much as product vision, and how AI, deep tech, biotech, aerospace, and software-enabled physical systems are reshaping venture capital. Matt also opens up about Ripple Ventures' own evolution, the firm's investment philosophy, and how Ripple OS and internal AI agents are helping portfolio companies move faster. If you want an honest look at startup fundraising, venture capital in Canada, founder-investor fit, AI startup differentiation, and the future of early-stage tech, this Tank Talks episode, originally recorded as Matt Cohen's appearance on Mantle Mondays with Amar Varma, is packed with practical insights. How Turnstile Pulled Matt Into the Startup World (03:07)The origin story of Turnstile, the wifi marketing and analytics company Matt co-founded, and how building and exiting that business gave him his first real startup education. Why Startup Struggle Matters More Than Investor Talk (05:11)Matt gets real about how hard it was to raise capital, why Turnstile had to grind toward profitability, and why lived operator experience matters when founders pick investors. How Ripple Ventures Started Before the Fund Existed (07:42)Matt explains how he built the Ripple brand before institutional capital was in place, why perception matters in venture, and how his early angel wins created momentum with family offices. The Long-Game Philosophy Behind Fund I (10:51)A great story about raising a first fund, proving commitment to LPs, and why first-time managers need to stop waiting for the “perfect” close and just get moving. What Gets a Founder's Attention in 2026 (16:44)Matt breaks down what's changed in venture, why deep tech and frontier ideas are more investable today, and why ambitious founders are tackling much bigger problems than they were a decade ago.The 4 Things Ripple Ventures Looks For in Founders (19:25)Matt lays out Ripple's core framework: validated problem, technical founding team, recruiting ability, and fundraising skill. The Startup That Blew Matt Away (23:29)Matt shares the story of Clover and why seeing a young team scale to massive early traction changed how he thinks about speed, execution, and modern company building. What a Generational Company Actually Looks Like (33:59)Matt gets honest about what he can and can't claim to know, then shares the founder traits he believes matter most when building something truly enduring. What Founders Should Look For in an Investor (38:05)A powerful section on support during hard moments, reputation in venture, and why investors are really tested when a company is struggling, selling, or stuck.Tank Talks, Community, and Playing the 25-Year Game (44:24)Matt reflects on building Tank Talks, surrounding himself with younger talent, and why staying close to ambitious founders keeps him sharp.Matt's Best Advice for Founders and Builders (46:31)A strong closing section on paying it forward, reputation, and why the people you meet on the way up are the same people you'll see on the way down.Mantle Mondays on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@withmantleConnect with Amar Varma on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amar-varma-8041b9/Connect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. In which the middle aged crew yammer on about WargamesIllustrated, the much missed and lamented Star Frontiers, AJ Styles, the Elimination Chamber, Predator Badlands, Turnstile, One Battle After Another, Who Dares Wins and more, and Tim waxes lyrical about a science fiction epic he's just finished reading before getting mad as hell about another of themany things that annoys him. ***EDITOR'S NOTE***Some settings got messed up with this episode so the audio isn't our best. Both mics, especially Jason's, have a lot of echo going on. I did what I could to make it as listenable as possible but if it's too annoying I'll understand. I promise to have this fixed before we record the next one.For better or worse, Childish Gambino's Because the Internet acts as a time capsule of 2014 internet and pop culture. The album simultaniously feels nostalgic and also dated. Some stuff on this album has aged really well and still sound pretty fresh over a decade later. Lets just say the other stuff really feels like a product of its time. Regardless we had a lot of fun doing this episode and revisiting 2014 while discussing the album Donald Glover left Community for.The album I have is the deluxe edition with the holographic slip cover and the full script Glover wrote to accompany the album. The records themselves are a very nice 180g black pressing with a nicely trimmed flat edge around the disc. My only real gripes with this pressing are the fact that the LPs aren't labeled with side a/b markers and the slip cover makes it VERY easy to just straight up drop everything the second you pick it up. Other than that it's a very cool pressing that I like a lot.In the news corner this episode we talk all about the former guitarist of Turnstile who attempted to do a teensy bit of vehicular manslaughter on Turnstile's vocalist's dad and sister and a small child. Note that this episode was recorded before the guitarists recent court appearance.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted on Ausha. After being dismissed from the band Turnstile, the former guitarist is being charged with attempted murder after an attack on the father of the lead singer.
Today's episode is exactly what happens when a comedy podcast gets ahold of Coachella band names and absolutely no adult supervision. The crew dives into a game that should probably never exist again: guessing whether bands are real or completely made up. And here's the problem—modern band names have gotten so ridiculous that “Diarrhea Planet,” “Horse Girl,” and “Black Moth Super Rainbow” are all REAL… which means our fake ones somehow sound too normal. Things escalate quickly when names like “Velvet Canoe,” “Beef Curtains,” and “Labial Assault” enter the conversation, and suddenly we're pitching a full-blown fake music festival that honestly might sell out faster than Coachella itself.Along the way, the show spirals (as it does) into side conversations that make zero sense but feel absolutely necessary. We get into celebrity drama involving Turnstile, break down Nikki Glaser's very… specific relationship preferences, and somehow transition into early 2000s cartoon nostalgia like it's a natural progression. (Spoiler: it's not, but we commit anyway.)There's also a healthy dose of Crap on Celebrities, where things range from serious music news to “how did we get here?” faster than you can say “Billy Ocean deep cut.” And yes, we wrap it all up with birthdays, questionable commentary, and a game that forces listeners to risk their dignity for concert tickets—because nothing says comedy podcast like public humiliation for entertainment. If you came here for a structured, educational experience… you took a wrong turn. But if you're here for laughs, chaos, and the kind of conversations that feel like your group chat got a radio show, then congratulations—you found your new favorite comedy podcast.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO. The 33-year-old musician, who was fired from Turnstile in 2022 and launched the new band Experience after The S.E.T. cut him loose earlier this year, made an initial appearance in court yesterday (April 1) and has a bond hearing set for today (April 2) at 1PM ET in front of Judge Sherri Debra Koch. A further preliminary hearing is set for May 1 at 9:30AM ET. An warrant for Ebert's arrest was issued by Judge Jacqueline Johnson on March 30 and served on March 31 in relation to a March 29 incident that led to the aforementioned charges. Ebert was apprehended by Montgomery County Police officer Kevin Moris and the musician is documented as having waived his attorney at the April 1 court appearance and is eligible to be represented by a public defender. THIS WEEK ON TOILET RADIO: We talk about a fledgling TovH Guy really going above and beyond by attempting to murder the elderly father of his former Turnstile vocalist. See you in 15-20, Brady! We compare and contrast the journey of Brady Ebert with rapper Pooh Sheisty who also went above and beyond this week by attempting to kidnap Gucci Mane in front of a cop and a million cameras. In other news: Kiko Loureiro, former Megadeth guitarist, threatened to sue Arch Enemy over stealing a guitar riff, Arch Enemy responds and shatters Kiko into a pile of broken glass. Jordan makes me listen to a terrible Ladies & Gentlemen Core song from Dominum and I just kinda sigh into my microphone for 7 minutes. In much sadder news, Bo Leuders of Harms Way and James Lollar of Gost died way too young this week. Finally, we question whether the metrics behind fake band Dogma can be trusted at all. This week/tonight we are officially changing the name of the podcast to "Oldboys Reminiscence: Eternal Summer Gone By" (Park Chan-wook can not sue us, this is a different thing!) because we are old and remembering when we weren't by revisiting LONG.LIVE.A$AP by A$AP Rocky. Also wildin' for the night: Elvis finds that Hallmark movie magic with a double-bevcheck disaster, the heinous tale of the ex-Turnstile guitarist is discussed, and we do not do any accents because if you put enough pauses between words they're just words.10/10 You're Great is presented by The Alternative. Hello, Friday! It's Easter weekend and we've got a bunch of rain in the forecast today with some thunderstorms possible tonight. Not going to warm up until next Wednesday when we might see temps get back into the 60's. With the holiday coming up on Sunday, we looked at some Easter stuff this morning including how much Americans will be spending on food, candy, and other Easter stuff. And a "new-ish" trend for kids who want to go hunting for Easter eggs. In the news this morning, Pam Bondi gets fired by President Trump, the Artemis II launch had a bit of a snafu when the toilet broke, the Tiger Woods bodycam footage gets released, the University of Wisconsin President is refusing to leave his position after being told to resign, and a recall on popular chicken nuggets from Walmart. In sports, the Brew Crew start a 3-game series in Kansas City tonight, the Bucks are off until tomorrow when they welcome in the Celtics, the NCAA Women's Final Four kicks off later today while the men's Final Four starts tomorrow night. Michigan's getting their starting point guard back just in time after an allergic reaction sent him to the hospital, and Kirk Cousins signs with the Raiders! We talked about what's on TV this weekend and what's new in theaters. Plus, the latest on the drama surrounding the band "Turnstile". It's some wild stuff! Great story about a woman who was hiking with her dog and fell over 180 feet down a waterfall, was rescued by helicopter, and a week later they were also able to locate & rescue her dog that went missing after her tumble. Elsewhere in sports, both Tiger Woods(duh) AND Phil Mickelson will miss next week's Masters tournament, Cade Cunningham is still recovering from his collapsed lung, the Washington Wizards apologized for an April Fool's joke because overly sensitive people got butthurt on the internet, and a couple of Red Bull racers have been suspended for sabotaging a recent race by moving rocks on the race course. Lots of people are going to be traveling this weekend to see family & friends, so we discussed some of our biggest travel pet-peeves. Doc joined us just after 8am to talk NASCAR racing thanks to County Materials in Holmen & Eau Claire. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a stabbing inside of a chicken coop, an OnlyFans content creator who's sending "care packages" to the brave men & women of the US Military, a restaurant in Louisiana that had to install a fence around their outdoor dining area to stop homeless people from shitting on their patio, and a #FloridaTeen who was arrested after human remains were found in multiple suitcases.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Originally recorded as Matt Cohen's guest appearance on the Make It Click podcast hosted by Willson Cross.Matt Cohen joins Willson Cross on the Make It Click podcast for a sharp, no-fluff conversation on what actually makes early-stage startups click. As the founder and managing partner of Ripple Ventures, Matt breaks down how he went from Bay Street and Wall Street trading desks to becoming one of Canada's most active early-stage investors, backing founders at the inception stage, sometimes before incorporation, bank accounts, or even customers exist.Matt shares the real frameworks he uses to evaluate founders before product-market fit: team quality, problem validation, recruiting ability, and fundraising muscle. The conversation dives into how Ripple Ventures helps companies graduate from pre-seed to Series A, why Matt loves pivots (or “evolutions”), how Canadian founders differ from U.S. founders in ambition and risk tolerance, and why AI, deep tech, space tech, and defence are reshaping venture capital in Canada. If you're a founder thinking about taking the leap, or an investor trying to understand the next wave of Canadian innovation, this episode is packed with practical, brutally honest insight.Matt Cohen's Unconventional Path Into VC (02:07)From trading on Bay Street and Wall Street during the financial crisis to angel investing after the Turnstile exit, and eventually launching Ripple Ventures. How early wins in angel investing attracted Toronto family offices and became the foundation for Fund I.How Ripple Ventures Was Born Before the Fund Existed (06:04)Why Matt created the Ripple Ventures brand before raising institutional capital, how reputation compounded deal flow, and the early angel investments that became proof points for LPs.The Ripple Ventures Framework: The 4 Things Matt Looks For (16:46)The four-part founder filter: team, problem, recruiting, and raising capital. Why most inception-stage companies don't need customers yet, and what really matters before the first pilot. The Ideal Founding Team Structure in 2026 (20:56)Why two to three founders is the sweet spot, what breaks when there are four or five, and how AI-native companies are changing the ideal division of roles between technical, research, and business founders. Why Matt Loves Pivots (and Hates the Word Pivot) (24:48)A fascinating story of a database company evolving into consumer healthcare, plus the decision framework Matt uses to pressure-test major product or market changes. Why Canada's Founder Quality Is Rising Fast (34:18)Matt's most bullish view yet on Canadian founders, the Build Canada momentum, Shopify and AI spinouts, and why technical founders from Vector, Mila, and DeepMind alumni networks are creating a new wave. The Biggest Difference Between Canadian and U.S. Founders (41:34)A brutally honest comparison around ambition, downside protection, and why U.S. founders often optimize for upside while Canadian capital historically optimized for risk management. The Brutal Truth Every Founder Needs to Hear (48:25)Matt's best founder advice: don't believe your own BS, prepare for everything to go wrong, and understand the life cost of building a venture-scale company before you start.Ripple Ventures' New Startup Studio Thesis (55:20)Matt reveals how Ripple Ventures is evolving from fund + fellowship into a studio model, using AI agents and internal problem discovery to build products before bringing in founding teams.Listen to the Make It Click podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@hireborderlessConnect with Willson Cross on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/willsoncross/Connect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. The boys flap their arms at hardcore's art-school evolution, stage-dive into post-genre euphoria, and use the scientific method to conduct an autopsy on the corpse of Turnstile's ecstatic modern anthem, “Birds.” News items and digressions include the debut of Rock 101, where single-coils and humbuckers are dissected with the precision of bedroom tone scientists who own entirely too many guitar pedals.
Bassist Franz Lyons joins Loudwire Nights to dive into Turnstile's latest successes, including picking up a couple of Grammy Awards in 2026.

This week on Toilet Radio: Kid Rock had a big week. Rock the Country, his patriots-only festival for flyover states, was forced to cancel some dates at the last minute. But thankfully he got to headline TPUSA's absurd “alternative super bowl halftime show” which, I'm told, went swimmingly. Brady Ebert got kicked out of his new band after trying to start beef with Turnstile. Lamb of God decided that now, of all times, is the time to get rid of the papyrus logo. Behemoth and Slaughter to Prevail got their shows cancelled in Turkey lol. President is angry that you all keep calling them “industry plants” that “completely rip off Sleep Token”. Finally, Furnace Fest has been sold due to wild ass financial mismanagement. Let's explore. Music featured on this ‘sode: Trucido – Retaliatory Justice This program is available on Spotify. This week on Toilet Radio: We got BEEF. A former member of Turnstile is BEEFING with the band over recent anti-ICE statements. Members of Reflections have so much BEEF with the vocalist over his pro-ICE views that they quit the whole damn band. The former vocalist of HeavyHeavyLowLow has BEEF with the guitarist over selling dusty old t-shirts! One of these things is not like the other! Also, Sharon is threatening the return of Ozzfest and we speculate what it would look like and how a Sharon vs Ash feud would go. Finally, some Swedish politicians think Slaughter to Prevail is a malign influence and they may have a point. Folks, it’s an episode. On this two-part episode, Mike and Jared explore how Grok, the AI chatbot built into Elon Musk's platform X, generates and distributes child sex abuse material and revenge porn. They're joined by Kat Tenbarge, an independent journalist who covers tech.
