SURPRISE!Our lost episode has been found! We had left Matilda in shambles on the cutting room floor after we weren't able to get separate track audio for everyone. Through the magic of perseverance we finally finished editing this episode. It's got a very 'live' feel to it, and it went off the rails in ways that are hard to explain. We hope you enjoy this slightly-longer-than-usual quasi-live episode of Rebooted, where we talk about many things, and sometimes Matilda. Originally released in 1973, The Wicker Man was a bizarre mystery involving missing children and ritual sacrifice. It was... Send help. The Rebooted studio has been overrun. There's a talking frog and a very angry pig outside the office demanding to speak with our producers. We think they want to commandeer the episode. We'll hold them off as long as we can, but it may be too late. The Muppets are very persuasive. This podcast was produced by Andak Media. In this episode, we collectively agree to ignore the elephant in the room, which is oddly guillotine shaped. No, this isn't Les Mis, it's Beauty & the Beast. Originally released in 1991, Disney's take on the well known fairytale was an instant classic, and Belle arguably cemented herself as the greatest of all Disney princesses. (Though we'll admit Rapunzel is pretty great too). It's a musical adventure that's bursting with bangers, and a timeless quality that simply cannot be beat. Of course, that didn't stop Disney from trying. The live action remake hit theaters in 2017 amid the opening salvo of live action renditions of our childhood favorites. Boasting new music, more character depth, and a surprising number of answers to all the plot holes we've pointed out over the years, it was the beginning of a new golden age for the Disney fairytale. Then Pinocchio happened. But I suppose we've already covered that. This podcast was produced by Andak Media. In this episode, we learn that Mel Gibson is actually Australian. Well, some of us do, anyway. Join us as we dive into the bizarre, post-apocalyptic classic Mad Max 2! Originally released in 1981, The Road Warrior follows Max Rockatansky, a cynnical drifter who spends his days driving through the Australian putback trying to stay one step ahead of marauders who would do anything to steal his precious gasoline. Running low on fuel, Max finds himself at a settlement under siege with plenty of gas to spare, and strikes up a deal to rid them of their bandit problem in exchange for a share of their fuel supply. The 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, we join an entirely different Max, who has been captured by the ruthless War Boys and turned into a walking blood bank. When Furiosa, a member of the gang, absconds with the leader's many slave wives to escort them to the safety of the Green Place, Max is dragged into an action-packed chase across the desert that may prove to be his best chance to escape. In this episode, we are all aboard the Brendan Fraser hype train and resurrecting an old favorite with The Mummy! (Do you see what we did there?) The Fraser fronted remake debuted in 1999 as a goofy, Iniana Jones inspired action romp about a race across Egypt to uncover a long forgotten treasure. It spawned a multi-film franchise that includes eight titles (but only if you count the four direct-to-video Scorpion King spin-offs, and, we're not sure those are up to par). In 2017, amid Marvel Mania, Universal tapped Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe for another remake intended to be the gritty, action-packed launch point of their own connected Dark Universe—a plan that failed quite spectacularly, if we're being honest. The one saving grace, is that 2017's outing gave us Jake Johnson basically rehashing his role as Nick Miller from New Girl but as a treasure hunting soldier, so not a total loss. Merry Christmas you filthy animal! In this episode, we celebrate home invasion and child abandonment with the Christmas Classic: Home Alone. Originally released in 1990, Home Alone follows everyone's favorite 8-year-old, Kevin McCallister as he fights off a pair of home invaders after his family accidentally left him, well, home alone. The 2021 reboot, awkwardly titled Home Sweet Home Alone, is a desperate attempt to pack as much nostalgia as possible into a 90 minute block that really never should have happened. In this episode, we take a roadtrip down to the Lone Star state to learn a valuable life lesson: Breaking and entering is bad, mmkay? Originally released in 1974, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of frieds who make a series of terrible life choices amid a distinct lack of chainsaw related deaths. Almost fifty years later (yes, it's been that long), Leatherface is back with a new group of forgettable twenty-somethings and a chainsaw that is ready to go to work. With a ham-fisted plot that seems desperate to mirror the return Jaime Lee Curtis in Halloween Kills, this requel leaves us wanting more, but we're all a little afraid of party busses now, so I guess that's something. The Walt Disney Company is up to their old tricks bringing us another remake that nobody asked for! Originally released in 1940, Pinocchio was Disney's second animated feature and tells the story of a wooden puppet brought to life and his quest to become a real boy. Fast forward 82 years—yes, it's that old. One of the interns found the original storyboard in a dusty corner of the illustrious vault they raided to launch Disney+, and instead of calling the Smithsonian, they called Tom Hanks. One bad Italian accent and a gaggle of disturbingly expressive CGI animals later, you get...well, pretty much the exact same thing. This podcast was produced by Andak Media. Your favorite film majors are back for season two! Oh, and Jake. He's here too. Join us as we kick off our next adventure with Invasion of the Body Snatchers! Originally released in...well, technically it was 1958, but in the interest of transparency (and time), we started with Philip Kaufman's 1978 version featuring a cloud of space embryos and some unassuming flowers who decided they were going to conquer earth one emotionless clone at a time. Remade (again) in 2007, Invasion ditches the hostile flora in favor of an alien disease that worms its way into people's brains, taking over their bodies while they sleep. If it bleeds, we can kill it. In this episode, we dive into the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Predator and its 2022 PREBOOT: Prey. Originally released in 1987, Predator follows a group of highly trained and heavily armed commandos sent into a remote jungle to search for survivors of a helicopter crash only to find themselves hunted by a lethal and invisible alien foe. Set in 1719, the preboot delves into the origin of the Predators presence on earth as one of their kind goes toe to toe with a young woman named Naru and her band of Comanche warriors. Chock full of throwback oneliners and nods to earlier films, Prey breathes new life into one of the most iconic killer aliens of all time, and we can't wait to see what comes next. Welcome to the inaugural round of Reboot Roulette! We've spent the last 18 episodes picking apart Hollywood reboots‐‐praising their successes and shaming their failures. We've forced ourselves to sit through flops, cash grabs, and more than a couple hits (looking at you Thumbtanic), and now it's time to put our educations to use and propose a few reboots of our own! We've got a list of five fan-cast remakes ready for your approval, but only one will come out on top. Who's idea is going to get funding? Well...none of them, probably. But one of us will get the satisfaction of knowing their idea is better then the rest of the group, so that's something. This podcast was produced by Andak Media. CW: In this episode we discuss violence involving children and pedophilia. In this episode, a father and daughter with psychic powers flee from a secret government agency trying to kill them. Along the way, they ruin the lives of an innocent farmer, blow up a few police cars and set a bunch of things on fire. Look, I'll level with you, we're not quite sure what to say about this one. 1984's Firestarter was a meandering slog through a labrynth of wasted potential, and while the 2022 reboot may have cut out some of the fluff, it still left a bad taste in our mouth. In this episode, Jimmy Buffet rescues a couple margaritas. Literally nothing else happens. Originally released in 1993, Jurrasic Park explores what would happen if a mad scientist devoted his time to resurrecting the dinosaurs. Spoiler alert: bad things happen. 20 some years later, science...uh...finds a way to not only make more dinosaurs, but also genetically engineer smarter ones. What could possibly go wrong? Everything. Everything goes wrong. Honestly, it's utterly shocking that the folks smart enough to bring dinosaurs back from extinction were also somehow too stupid to stop and think "You know, this is a really bad idea." I suppose the only thing left to do is throw in a couple kids to raise the stakes. This podcast was produced by Andak Media. In this episode we set sail on a deadly journey through Egypt with Death on the Nile. Originally released in 1978, the film adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic whodunnit boasts an impressive cast including Angela Lansbury and Maggie Smith, yet suffers from a distinct lack of pacing. Remade in 2022, the modern reboot sports an over saturated color palate likely curated by folks who forgot what it was like to go outside. Though we did finally get some context for Poirot's glorious moustache, the new film still leaves something to be desired. This podcast was produced by Andak Media. In this episode, we learn to count to 12...or wait...was it 9? Is that the same kid? Ugh. Whatever. Just get in the car already. We're late! This week we're bringing you another threeboot (patent pending) with Cheaper by the Dozen. Originally released in 1950, this movie tells the true story of efficiency experts Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and their 12 children. Then, somewhere between 1950 and 2022, Disney dropped just about everything (including three whole children) and delivered a disappointing reboot that really only shares a title with the original. Honestly. This would have made a whole lot more sense with a title of Yours Mine and Ours, but now we're just splitting hairs. Where were we? What? Steve Martin? Right, right. Poor middle child. Who you gonna call? Nearly 40 years after the Ghostbusters saved New York, Egon Spengler's granddaughter discovers a hidden bunker beneath an old farm house and teams up with his awkwardly mute ghost to save the world. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a "requel" that is bursting with nostalgia while also putting a new, and (slightly) more intense spin on the franchise drawing inspiration (and cast members) from shows like Stranger Things. With Paul Rudd acting as an anchor to the campy humor of the original, and a complete lack of references to 2016's flop of a reboot, Afterlife is the Ghostbusters revival you've been waiting for. What's a threeboot? We're not sure, but it's 2 hours long and has more side tracks than a Bethesda RPG. In this episode, we learn that it's perfectly acceptable to be bat $#@! crazy as long as you help catch a serial killer. And root out police corruption. And pick fights with mobsters. And sort of thwart a cat burglar (maybe?). We're checking in with the World's Greatest Detective to see what's new in Gotham City since Warner Bros replaced Batfleck, and hoo boy...there is a lot to take in. That's right, ladies and gents. Do you like scary movies? In this episode, we revisit one of the most iconic horror franchises of the 90s because we apparently have a soft spot for Wes Craven. (Can you blame us?) Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, Scream follows Sydney Prescott as she confronts a derranged killer in a Halloween costume determined to end her life. This horror classic manages to poke fun at the genre as a whole with self referential dark humor while still maintaining a suspensful tone throughout. This podcast was produced by Andak Media. Ned the head?! In this episode, Colonel O'Neill learns to speak Ancient, Dean Winchester orders a pig and a poke, Mulder tries to stop a bank robbery, and Buffy is stuck in the magic shop. Released in 1993, Groundhog Day tells the story of Phil, a self-absorbed weatherman from Pittsburgh who finds himself stuck in the town of Punxsutawney reliving the same day in an endless loop. Groundhog Day has inspired stories in just about every sci-fi/fantasy franchise, and its only fitting that we revisit the Bill Murray classic again (and again) on the day Punxsutawney Phil searches for his shadow. Released in 2020, Palm Springs certainly draws inspiration from the 1993 film, but even Jake could tell it wasn't a remake (don't trust everything you read on the internet, kids). In this episode, we're hitching a ride on a prison bus to spend the night at a defunct police precinct scheduled to be shut down for good. Things take a dark turn when a mob of criminals (and a few corrupt cops) crash the party intent on killing everyone inside. It's a high stakes showdown chock-full of unnecessary violence, workplace harassment disguised as sexual tension, and some weird blood pact that no one really understands. Join us as we find out just how deep this rabbit hole goes in the sci-fi classic: Chapter 29...er...The Matrix! Simultaneously set in 1999 and 2199, an ordinary programmer named Thomas Anderson takes drugs from a stranger and discovers the harsh reality that he's just a battery for a bunch of self aware robots. Perfectly normal stuff, really. 20 some years later, The Matrix Resurrections reunites audiences with Mr. Anderson who is now a prolific game developer in a world where the Matrix is just a wildly successful video game franchise. With clever use of stock footage, and a couple recast characters, the 2021 film delivers a story whose status as a "reboot" is questionable at best, but manages to frame the same philosophical themes of the original in a modern context that's just as thought provoking. Be warned, though, that this is a spoiler heavy deep dive into the evolution of those themes and the greater meaning of the Matrix franchise. We highly recommend watching the newest film before you take the red pill. You smell like beef and cheese. You don't smell like Santa! In this episode, we get into the spirit of Christmas with Miracle on 34th Street, the timeless classic about a crazy old man named Kris Kringle who thinks he's Santa Claus. Originally released in 1947, this is the meandering story of a hotshot attorney who goes to bat for a delusional old man to prove that he's the real Santa. After a bit of dumb luck on behalf of the USPS (and a random dollar bill), the state of New York decides that there's no harm in being mentally unstable so long as you're spreading Christmas spirit. With a combined runtime of just over three and a half hours, the only miracle of note is watching two people get married in a Catholic church without trudging through months of marriage prep and awkward couples retreats. WOLVERINES!! In this episode, we try not to piss off foreign markets with the classic "what if" film: Red Dawn. Originally released in 1984 and remade in 2012, Red Dawn tells the story of a rag-tag group of high school students who drink deer's blood and get weirdly good at guerilla warfare. Featuring a slew of MCU cameos and that one dude from The Hunger Games who was named after a flatbread, this action packed romp proves that it only takes a montage to turn students into soldiers. The spice must flow! (But no one said anything about the plot) Released in 1984, David Lynch's adapdation of Frank Herbert's Dune was railed by Roger Ebert as an "ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion." The film received a nearly unanimous thumbs down from every notable critic at the time, and seemingly for good rereason. Nearly 40 years later, Denis Villeneuve tried again and split what may be the slowest sci-fi movie of all time into two parts. It was a ballsy move that seems to have paid off as the 2021 reboot was met with largely positive reviews from fans and critics alike while following (almost verbatim) every major beat of Lynch's original flop. We'll need to wait until 2023 to see the conclusion of Villeneuve's vision, but we may finally have the adaptation that Herbert's novel deserves. V1ce The last business card you'll ever buy! Dishonor on your cow! In this episode we take a nostalgia filled trip back to ancient China with Disney's Mulan. Originally released in 1998, this iconic Disney classic tells the story of Hua Mulan, a Chinese folk hero who dressed as a man and went to war to protect her aging father. Remade in 2020, the live action reboot turns Hua Mulan into an acrobatic bad ass destined for greatness, but gives everyone's favorite dragon the cold shoulder. Lack of Mushu aside, the only thing these two movies seem to have in common is Walt's signature on the title card, and that's good enough for us, so let's get down to business. One, two, Freddie's coming for you... In this episode, we take a look at the iconic horror franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Set in an idyllic suburban town that is clearly too good to be true, things take a bloody turn when a bunch of 30-year-old teenagers start dying in their sleep. Rebooted in 2010, Fred Krueger returns with more screen time and an actual backstory that no amount of caffeine can protect you from. For all the frights these movies have to offer, perhaps the scariest thing of all is to hear Mike and Jake agree on something for a change. Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Get your ass to Mars!In this episode, we dive into the sci-fi classic Total Recall starring the Terminator himself: Arnold Schwarzenegger. Set in the distant future, a blue collar worker named Douglas Quaid finds himself embroiled in an inter-planetary rebellion after a visit to Rekall in search of a virtual vacation.Remade (and relocated?) in 2012, the Colin Ferrell reboot sees Quaid one-upping Jules Verne as he travels through the center of the Earth with an army of robots to stop a chemistry teacher from blowing up Australia (we're paraphrasing). As Kurt Russell learned in Escape from New York, predicting the future is never easy, but some folks a better at it than others. It's a battle between omnidirectional elevators and a trip to the Red Planet, but we're weirdly fixated on keyboards.Andak Gaming Andak Gaming is an independent publisher of portable board games, listeners can receive 15% off!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.
