Play your flame guitar as you cue up the 655th edition of Have You Ever Seen to hear us jaw about the loner known as Max Rockatansky, but stay for the Imperator known as Furiosa. George Miller's 6-time Oscar-winner was the 4th in a series that already featured one of the greatest stunt movies ever made (The Road Warrior), but then he and his team managed to easily top it with Fury Road. And just as it was with the earlier pre-CGI films, most of the remarkable and dangerous stuff was done practically! Tom Hardy is solid casting in taking over the role that made Mad Mel Gibson a star, but this movie belongs to Charlize Theron as Furiosa. She, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough and the other fantastic female characters are the standouts in a surprisingly feminist film. So drive out, then drive back home as we head over to Australia (well, Namibia, really) and wrap up another Oscar Month with a detailed chat about Mad Max: Fury Road. Well, Actually: we said that it's unlikely Miller will get to make more films in this series because Furiosa bombed last year, but Mad Max: The Wasteland IS in pre-production. Welcome back to Hugging the Cactus: A Mel Gibson Podcast! In this episode, host Sicco dives into the wild world of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the 1985 sequel that left fans scratching their heads. With a $12 million budget and a disappointing $36 million domestic box office, Sicco explores why this post-apocalyptic action flick didn't live up to The Road Warrior. From the tragic death of co-creator Byron Kennedy in a helicopter crash to Warner Brothers' Americanized, PG-friendly overhaul, he unpacks the shift from brutal car chases to slapstick train escapes and a kid-filled storyline. Mel Gibson's Max Rockatansky teams up with Tina Turner's unforgettable Auntie Entity, backed by a killer soundtrack featuring "We Don't Need Another Hero." Sicco also covers George Miller's direction, the Thunderdome arena, deleted scenes, and missed toy marketing opportunities. Welcome back to Born to Watch, the movie podcast where we dive deep into the films that define genres, push boundaries, and leave audiences speechless. This week, we're tackling one of the greatest action films of the modern era with our Mad Max Fury Road (2015) Movie Review. When George Miller resurrected the Mad Max franchise in 2015, nobody expected just how monumental Fury Road would become. A two-hour adrenaline rush packed with death-defying stunts, high-speed chases, and jaw-dropping practical effects, this film redefined what action movies could be. From the stunning cinematography to the minimal but powerful storytelling, Fury Road remains a cinematic triumph. But where does it rank in the Mad Max series? And is it truly a Mad Max movie, or does Furiosa steal the show? The BTW team breaks it all down.Mad Max Returns—But Is He the Star?Tom Hardy takes over the iconic role of Max Rockatansky, a road-weary survivor haunted by his past. But does Max get lost in the dust in a film filled with larger-than-life warlords, kamikaze war boys, and a heavy-metal guitarist strapped to a flame-throwing rig?Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa might be the real heart of Fury Road. Her mission to rescue the wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe drives the story forward, and her character's emotional depth makes her one of the most compelling action heroines of all time. We discuss whether Fury Road is more of a Furiosa film than a Max one—and how this dynamic affects the franchise as a whole.Behind-the-Scenes Mayhem: A Production NightmareThe journey to bring Mad Max Fury Road to life was almost as chaotic as the movie. Originally planned to film in the Australian Outback, unexpected rainstorms turned the barren wasteland into a flower-filled paradise, forcing the production to move to Namibia. Months of gruelling desert shoots, on-set conflicts, and the sheer ambition of the stunts made this one of the most difficult productions in recent memory.George Miller, the mastermind behind the franchise, pushed for practical effects wherever possible. Almost everything you see on screen—the insane car chases, the gravity-defying stunts, and the war rigs tearing across the desert—was done for real. The result? It is a visceral, pulse-pounding experience unlike anything else. The Legacy of Fury RoadWhen Fury Road hit theatres, it was more than just a blockbuster—it was a game-changer. The film scored 10 Oscar nominations, winning six, including Best Editing for George Miller's wife, Margaret Sixel. But beyond the awards, Fury Road proved that practical effects, real stunts, and original storytelling could still dominate in an era of CGI-heavy action films. But how does it hold up nearly a decade later? Does Fury Road deserve a spot among the greatest action movies ever? And where does it sit in the Mad Max franchise compared to The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome? The BTW Verdict: An Action MasterpieceWith non-stop action, unforgettable characters, and some of the most visually stunning cinematography in movie history, Mad Max Fury Road is a must-watch for any action fan. Whether you're revisiting it for the tenth time or experiencing it for the first, there's no denying that this film is a relentless, high-octane thrill ride from start to finish.Tune in to this week's episode as we break down every explosive moment, debate the film's legacy, and determine if Fury Road is the best Mad Max film yet. Don't forget to leave a review, share the episode with fellow movie lovers, and share your thoughts on the film!

I am awaited! After a long time away, a bombastic veteran makes a triumphant return to the stage that made him famous. I'm talking, of course, about director George Miller, the driving force behind the Mad Max films since the first one hit the gas in 1979. Earlier this year, the latest installment of the Mad Max saga roared into cinemas… but for the first time, Max Rockatansky was not one of the lead characters. Instead, the film focuses on telling the origin story of Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in the last outing, Fury Road, here played by Anya Taylor-Joy, with Alyla Brown playing her as the child. With many characters familiar to Fury Road fans, this prequel forges enough connective tissue to feel part the saga sans Max, while Chris Hemsworth's Dementus provides a worthy adversary. That said, audiences themselves didn't make the trek to the theater, with the film barely surpassing its production budget at the box office. So what are we to make of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga? Is it a prequel that delivers the goods, or does this doomsday detour deserve to be lost in the Wasteland forever? Editor - Eliot Knapman FURIOSA editor Eliot Knapman is no stranger to the post-apocalyptic postproduction of a Mad Max movie, having previously worked as ACE editor Margaret "Margie" Sixel's second assistant on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. For director George Miller's latest film in the franchise, not only was Eliot tapped to be co-editor with Sixel, but was there on set with Miller throughout production doing the first assembly under what had to be fun, but arduous, conditions. FURIOSA is the fifth installment in Miller's Mad Max franchise, and the first not focused on series protagonist Max Rockatansky, instead acting as both a spin-off prequel to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) and an origin story for the Fury Road character Furiosa, portrayed by both Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne in the prequel. Set 15 to 20 years before the events of Fury Road, the film follows the title character's life for over a decade, from her kidnapping by the forces of warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) to her ascension to the rank of Imperator. Eliot Knapman Prior to moving up to the editor's chair on FURIOSA, Eliot worked as a first assistant on such films as THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING (2022) and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE (2017), and as a second assistant on films like MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) and THE GREAT GATSBY (2013).

Witness us!Mad Max is more than just an influential film franchise; it's an indelible part of the Australian cultural identity. From modest beginnings as an independent thriller by George Miller and Byron Kennedy in 1979, Mad Max expanded into two high-octane post-apocalyptic epics in the 1980s with Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985). By 1995, ten years after the seeming end of the franchise, Australia named Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior as a quintessential piece of their 'National Cinematic Heritage' for UNESCO's Memory of the World preservation program. The legacy of Mad Max was further cemented with the arguably unprecedented critical success of its long-delayed "legacy sequel" Mad Max: Fury Road, which recast the role of Max Rockatansky and rode shiny and chrome to 10 nominations at the 88th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and ultimately taking home six statues (the most of any film that night). Now, with the release of Fury Road's prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Tom Lorenzo revisits the franchise that went from Australian indie to Oscar juggernaut, to see what we can take away today from the film series that redefined our idea of life after the apocalypse.Watch Tom's Mad Max recap, and subscribe to our YouTube channel to not miss another video: https://youtube.com/live/9HN6-NwVmCI Follow the Show:TwitterInstagramWebsite Music by Mike Natale
In the pantheon of post-apocalyptic cinema, few films have achieved the iconic status of George Miller's Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Released in 1981, this Australian action masterpiece solidified Mel Gibson's status as a global star and redefined the genre with its raw, kinetic energy and visionary storytelling. For this week's episode of Born to Watch, we delve deep into why The Road Warrior remains a timeless classic, resonating with audiences over four decades later.Cinematic Brilliance and World-BuildingFrom the opening frames, The Road Warrior immerses viewers in a desolate, dystopian future where civilisation has collapsed and survival is a brutal battle. The film's cinematography, spearheaded by Dean Semler, captures the stark beauty and harshness of the Australian outback, transforming it into a hauntingly plausible post-apocalyptic wasteland. The wide, sweeping shots of barren landscapes contrast with the intense, close-up action sequences, creating a visually compelling narrative that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.George Miller's direction is nothing short of visionary. He crafts a world that is both alien and eerily familiar, where the collapse of society has led to a regression into primitive tribalism. The attention to detail in the set design, costumes, and vehicles helps build a universe that feels lived-in and believable. The modified cars and motorbikes, adorned with spikes and armour, have become iconic symbols of the film, representing the resourcefulness and desperation of the world's inhabitants.Storytelling and ThemesAt its core, The Road Warrior is a story about survival and redemption. Max Rockatansky, portrayed with stoic intensity by Mel Gibson, is a lone wanderer haunted by the loss of his family and former life. Max's journey is one of reluctant heroism; he is initially driven solely by self-preservation but gradually finds a purpose in helping a group of settlers defend their precious fuel supply from a marauding band of savages. The narrative is straightforward yet profound, exploring isolation, community, and the enduring human spirit. The settlers, led by the charismatic Pappagallo (Michael Preston), represent a glimmer of hope and civilisation amidst the chaos. Their struggle to protect their oil refinery from the barbaric Humungus (Kjell Nilsson) and his gang is a microcosm of the fight to preserve humanity's better nature in the face of annihilation.Character Development and PerformancesMel Gibson's portrayal of Max is a masterclass in understated performance. With minimal dialogue, Gibson conveys a depth of emotion through his physicality and expressions. Max is a man of few words, but his actions speak volumes, making him an enigmatic and compelling protagonist. His evolution from a hardened survivor to a reluctant saviour is subtly yet powerfully executed. The film's antagonists are equally memorable. The Humungus, with his menacing presence and grotesque mask, is a formidable villain whose very appearance strikes fear. Vernon Wells, as Wez, the psychotic henchman, delivers a terrifying and mesmerising performance. His raw, unhinged energy epitomises the savage brutality of the film's antagonistic forces. The supporting cast adds depth and variety to the narrative, including the feisty and resourceful Feral Kid (Emil Minty) and the determined Warrior Woman (Virginia Hey). No matter how minor, each character contributes to the film's rich tapestry, making the world feel populated and real.Action and ChoreographyOne of the most celebrated aspects of The Road Warrior is its groundbreaking action sequences. The film is renowned for its spectacular car chases and stunts, which remain some of the most thrilling ever captured on film. The climactic chase scene, in which Max drives a heavily armoured tanker while pursued by Humungus's gang, is a masterclass in action filmmaking. The sequence is meticulously choreographed, combining practical effects, real stunts, and dynamic camera work to create a visceral and exhilarating experience.Miller's decision to use practical effects and real vehicles lends authenticity to the action that CGI-heavy modern films often lack. The stunts are dangerous and daring, performed by skilled stuntmen who risked life and limb to achieve the film's breathtaking sequences. This commitment to practical effects enhances the film's gritty realism and keeps viewers engaged in the high-stakes drama.Cultural Impact and LegacyThe Road Warrior has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Its influence can be seen in countless films, TV shows, and video games that draw inspiration from its post-apocalyptic aesthetic and action-packed narrative. The film's success helped to popularise the genre, paving the way for future dystopian classics. Moreover, The Road Warrior established many tropes synonymous with post-apocalyptic storytelling. The lone antihero, the savage wasteland, the resource wars—these elements have been echoed and reinterpreted in various media, a testament to the film's enduring legacy. The character of Max Rockatansky himself has become a cultural icon, embodying the archetype of the reluctant hero who rises to the occasion. Mel Gibson's portrayal has left a lasting impression, making Max one of cinema's most memorable characters.Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior is a towering achievement in action cinema. Its blend of stunning visuals, relentless action, and poignant storytelling creates a film that is as emotionally resonant as it is thrilling. George Miller's visionary direction, outstanding performances, and groundbreaking stunts have cemented the film's place in cinematic history. For the Born to Watch podcast team, The Road Warrior is not just a movie but a benchmark of filmmaking excellence. Its impact on the genre and popular culture is undeniable, and its themes of survival, community, and redemption continue to resonate with audiences today. As we revisit this classic, we're reminded of the power of cinema to transport, inspire, and entertain. So, buckle up and join us on this high-octane journey through the wastelands – because in the world of Mad Max, the road is as unforgiving as it is exhilarating.

Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. When Joe's chief transportation lieutenant Imperator Furiosa betrays Joe and smuggles his wives from Joe's harem to bring them to the safety of the Green Place, Joe's Army and the armies of the neighboring Bullet Town and Gas Town give a desperate chase to get Joe's wives back. During the chaos, Max escapes captivity and forms an uneasy alliance with Furiosa as the two hurtle down Fury Road in an epic chase for their lives and the future of civilization. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – a franchise first prequel and continuity driven story of Young Furiosa, how she lost her mother, her true love and her arm at the hands of the demagogue Dr. Dementus, a cruel rabble rouser who starts a wasteland war with Immortatan Joe and the leaders of the of Bulletown and Gas Town.
It was 45 years ago that Max Rockatansky, as played by a babyfaced Mel Gibson, first hit the deserted roadways of a near future Australia. Sure, he was more miffed than mad in his first big screen go-round, but director George Miller's debut feature MAD MAX made enough of a mark that it's still inspiring devotees nearly a half century after its debut. And with this week's release of FURIOSA, we thought it was a perfect time to dip into the archives and look back to the time when Miller made Mel Mad!
Back with a vengeance! Yes, ahead of the release of Furiosa, we're looking at the Mad Max movie that features the most legendary pop star in the whole series (well, apart from the Doof Warrior): Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Initially reviled for its lighter tone and child sidekicks, the film now feels like a stepping stone to the operatic excesses George Miller has taken the franchise to in the 21st century - and Tina Turner as Aunty Entity is a piece of stunt-casting that truly works. This week, Producer Rob rejoins the show to talk about all things Mad Max, including the series's fascinatingly improvisatory attitude towards continuity, the extent to which Max Rockatansky obeys Joseph Campbell's laws of heroism, and the absolute goldmine of memorable quotes this movie contains. It's two podcasters enter, and, er, two podcasters leave - but not before revealing this film's unexpected place in hip-hop history... Come to our Barter Town over at Patreon, where you can exchange your money for a monthly bonus episode of the show - we've just covered every single pop star appearance on Doctor Who, from the Beatles to Billie Piper - plus written articles on classic Asian cinema, The X-Files and red Dwarf. Send us a Text Message.Have you ever sat down, completely alone, as the screen lit up with a world so chaotic yet captivating that you felt every pulse-pounding moment in your bones? That's exactly what happened to Eric and Phil when they first saw "Mad Max: Fury Road." Join us as we break our hiatus with a bang, diving headfirst into the dystopian chaos and beauty of George Miller's masterpiece. From the unforgettable score to the relentless pace that never lets up, we've got a lot to say about this high-octane adventure. And with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" on the horizon, we're revving up our engines for what's next in this gritty universe. The legend of Max Rockatansky is one shrouded in dust and mystery, and no one wears that mantle quite like Tom Hardy. But let's be honest, did he fill Mel Gibson's boots, or did he leave us parched for more of Max's past? Let's not forget the ensemble cast that brought their A-game, especially Nicholas Hoult, who deserves a victory lap for his role. Tensions, apologies, and the raw power of practical effects—it's the meaty discussion you didn't know you needed.Reflecting on a decade since "Fury Road" tore through theaters, we're peeling back the layers of its legacy. Did it redefine what we expect from action films? Absolutely. We'll even toss around our thoughts on its influence over the eagerly awaited "Borderlands" adaptation—can it deliver the same gut punch, or will it be left in the dust? Speculation abounds as we consider alternate realities where Eminem or Heath Ledger helmed the wheel as Max. The future's looking as wild as the wasteland, with the "Furiosa" spin-off gearing up to take us back to the madness. Buckle up, listeners, because every Wednesday is a new escape into the worlds of gaming, anime, and entertainment—just wait for it.Letterbox'd Synopsis: An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order.
Witness me, Slackers! This week is a petal to the metal episode. No chit chat, no personal anecdotes from the week, nada - just straight out the gate just like the opening of every Mad Max movie. George Miller knows to keep all that pesky dialogue to a minimum and let the story unfold visually. From the very first installment, Max Rockatansky has been one of the most interesting cinematic characters, in large part because he says so little. Whether Max is played by Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy, so much is expressed via facial expressions and the chaos happening all around him. Paired with some memorable villains, and you get cinematic gold. Speaking of villains, what a list of names: Toecutter. Night Rider. Lord Humongous. Wez. Aunty Entity. Ironbar. And of course, Immortan Joe. They just keep getting more and more over the top as the franchise progressed. And what's truly remarkable is the fact that Max is actually the deuteragonist of Mad Max: Fury Road. That's right, he's the second most important character - the protagonist is one Imperator Furiosa, originally played to perfection by Charlize Theron, and soon to be embodied by Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. I don't know about you, but I am pretty stoked to see another installment in the franchise - Max or no Max!
This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris head into the post-apocalypse (?) of 1979's Max Max to celebrate the 45th anniversary of George Miller's classic. Miller's debut film, Mad Max is set in a dystopian Australia on the brink of societal collapse. Mel Gibson stars as Max Rockatansky, one of the few remaining police officers trying to maintain law and order. A sadistic motorcycle gang led by Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) becomes a thorn in Max's side when they first target his partner Goose (Steve Bisley) and then Max and his family. The guys talk about how things seem OK for a world on the brink of collapse, how Goose becomes the main character for a large section of the movie, if Max and his wife Jessie (Joanne Samuel) are bad parents, the memorable climax where Max finally gets Mad and more. You can watch Mad Max on Prime Video, Tubi, and PlutoTV. Next week we're talking about the 90s spin on Most Dangerous Game, Surviving the Game for its 30th anniversary. We want to hear your comments and feedback. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we are pointing our compasses southward to the land of doom and gloom:Australia! Don't be fooled by the likes of Paul Hogan, Yahoo Serious and Thor, underneath that loopy, whimsical Australian charm, lies an unparalleled grim and sober yet prophetic outlook about life on Earth as evidenced by 1971's Walkabout directed by Nicholas Roeg, though full disclosure: he's an Englishman who shepherded Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg, David Gulpilil and John Meillion to cinematic prominence, then 1982's The Road Warrior aka Mad Max 2 directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Kjell Nillson, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Mike Preston, Arkie Whitely, Viginia Hey and Emil Minty then topped off with The Road directed by Australian native John Hillcoat and starring Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Garrett Dillahunt, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Guy Pearce and Robert Duvall. My guests today are once again the series regulars who have both the stomach and gloomy disposition to take solace in rewatching these films back-to-back-to-back, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we go on a walkabout of our own, the synopses: In Walkabout, a perfectly ordinary pair of upper-class English siblings get lost in the Australian outback after their father takes them for a picnic then tries to murder them. They look to be perfect candidates for either heat stroke and/or vulture food until they are rescued by a young Aboriginal teen out on his Walkabout. The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2 raises the stakes of the original Mad Max and picks up the story with ex cop Max Rockatansky travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a slim chance to survive. In The Road a Man risks all to protect his Boy and teach him survival skills in another bleak and nightmarish future where all plant and animal life is gone and the dominant humans subsist through murder and cannibalism. In this episode, we learn that Mel Gibson is actually Australian. Well, some of us do, anyway. Join us as we dive into the bizarre, post-apocalyptic classic Mad Max 2! Originally released in 1981, The Road Warrior follows Max Rockatansky, a cynnical drifter who spends his days driving through the Australian putback trying to stay one step ahead of marauders who would do anything to steal his precious gasoline. Running low on fuel, Max finds himself at a settlement under siege with plenty of gas to spare, and strikes up a deal to rid them of their bandit problem in exchange for a share of their fuel supply. The 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, we join an entirely different Max, who has been captured by the ruthless War Boys and turned into a walking blood bank. When Furiosa, a member of the gang, absconds with the leader's many slave wives to escort them to the safety of the Green Place, Max is dragged into an action-packed chase across the desert that may prove to be his best chance to escape. Decades after Thunderdome, Tom Hardy slipped into the role of Max Rockatansky, with Charlize Theron joining him as the original character Furiosa. A box office success and critical darling, we ask in retrospect: Is Fury Road worth following, or a victim of its own hype?
Once again starring Mel Gibson and this time featuring Tina Turner - as well as a chart-topping, Golden Globe-and Grammy-nominated hit song - Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome stood as the final chapter in Max Rockatansky's saga for decades. A modest success, is the film deserving of its cult status?
