Do you ever fall into the trap of people pleasing or comparison? Do you ever look to your routines and circumstances as your source of hope? Oof today's episode hits hard... talk about conviction! This is part 2 of the Living Among the Dead Series, examining the ways we look for the things only God can give us in unreliable places. Today we zero in on the topics of Life, Living Hope, & Freedom and our tendency to have an earthly perspective rather than a heavenly one. We look at: LIFE Ephesians 2:4-10 and the immeasurable riches of God's grace (even in our cycle of falling short!) How people pleasing and comparison are traps of earning and obligation God's Hesed love is the perfect source of safety, belonging, and approval HOPE 1 Peter 1:3-5 and the living hope we have in Jesus & His promises If we hope in our circumstances or our own expectations we are hopeless FREEDOM John 8:12, 31-36 and the freedom we find in Jesus' light & Word Our tendency to look to our own willpower (routines, schedules, plans, tools, diets, etc) to find freedom If we look for freedom anywhere but Jesus we will always stay stuck! & How to SEE, SHIFT, & SHINE to trade our earthly, stuck perspective for a hopeful heavenly one! Do you feel stuck & stagnant? When Christians feel a lack of growth or shame and fear, we are often relying on the unreliable instead of on God in our day-to-day needs. Whether we are looking for love, freedom, hope, joy, provision, or satisfaction... Jesus is the only living and lasting source! In this series, we'll see the sneaky false beliefs that we can find any of this lasting goodness anywhere but Christ. Over and over again in the Gospels, Jesus identifies our earthly perspective and transforms it into a heavenly one. In the same way, we will see how we are looking in all the wrong places, sometimes twisting good things and blessings into our top priority and the things we rely on. We'll take a look at Luke 24:1-9, Jeremiah 2:12-13, John 4:13, & Isaiah 45:18-21 ESV and the idols that show up in our own lives as we turn away from the Living Water of Christ to our own cisterns that are full of nothing-ness or nastiness. Life and our spiritual destination is assured for us through faith in Jesus, but day-to-day we can turn our blessings into our safe place... but good things without God are always unreliable. Relying on these unreliable things always results in shame, fear, hurt, and staying stuck as the enemy tries to discourage us, distract us, and cause us to doubt our truly faithful and loving God. How do we cope after trauma? When the enemy uses shame to keep us silent, God's Truth gives us freedom. Today my friend Anné Bates opens up to share her story, focusing on God's redemptive power after sexual assault and the message He impressed on her heart: It's Not About You! This is truly an incredible story of God's redemptive work, of wrestling with the evil in this world, & embracing boldness as we, new creations in Christ, live for God's glory! This conversation touches on why God allows evil, the concept of free will, how we can share when we don't feel prepared, replacing lies with Truth in Christ, and how God is our light even in the midst of deep darkness. This is a powerful example of how we can identify and dismantle the lies and false beliefs of the enemy and instead abide with Christ & His Word. We also discuss Ephesians 6:12-13 & Romans 12:1-3 ESV and how we can be living sacrifices, willing to be uncomfortable for God & the Kingdom because ultimately it's not about us or our comfort. Christians are called to be bold and willing to be uncomfortable in a culture that idolizes comfort. When we obey (in God's strength never our own) we are able to see His purposes & fight the spiritual battles waging against us. Are you going through a hard season or circumstance? Whether this is a small day-to-day struggle or a traumatic incident, God's promises are for you. He has hope, faith, love, & goodness for you that isn't contingent on things going well in your life. This is comfort I needed in the moment & I'm hoping it brings you comfort as well! Taking a look at Psalm 37 NIV, we see that even when we don't understand why we're going through hard times God provides for us physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. We also have an enemy who is actively seeking to discourage, distract, & cause us to doubt. And rather than hiding away our reactions because we deem our challenges to be "too small" or "too much" we can actually bring all of our feelings to God. I share my own difficulties with our cat who is peeing outside of her litter box and my own wrestling when my prayers aren't answered how I expect them to be. Even the pain of seemingly small challenges is valid and shouldn't be discounted.
