The Missing Chapter: History's Forgotten Stories

The Land down under, the Aussies, the lucky country, Oz - all nicknames for the area of the world that seems to have almost gone unnoticed by authors of the history textbooks. “How come we don't learn much about Australia”, some of our students ask yearly…well, you're about to, kids. Grab a cup of coffee, you know we are, because we're going to take you back to the 1930s and talk about one of the forgotten wars that Australians underwent in the early 1930s - while the world was feeling the effects of the great depression, and Germany was giving into the rise of fascism under Adolf Hitler, there was an active war on the smallest continent in the world, yet the 6th largest country. The Missing Chapter: History's Forgotten Stories

If you're a fan of the Missing Chapter, you may recognize the title of today's episode. If you're a newbie to all things Missing Chapter, well, welcome to Part II of the crazy bird campaign from another bird-brained dictator. This time, it's not Kim Jung Un from North Korea, although the stories are eerily similar, we're focused on Mao Zedong from China, and Mao's first order of business - a violent campaign, a declaration of war even, against a threat to his authoritarian regime - what was the threat you ask? Well it wasn't the expansion of an imperialist nation or a rising threat on his borders, it was against birds. You heard me right, birds. Why would anyone, no less a feared authoritarian leader, make such an odd declaration, especially against birds? Find out today on this episode of the Missing Chapter. The Missing Chapter: History's Forgotten Stories

The country of North Korea has been riddled with mystery - little is known about this Mississippi-sized country - until fairly recently. North Korea has been locked down to outsiders, and after miraculous escapes by defectors, and a handful of documentary film crews breaching the borders, we've become more enlightened about this Hermit Kingdom and what truly happens on the north side of the 38th parallel. As electric fences and barbed wire stretch along the border, we now know their purpose is not to keep foreigners out, but to keep their own people in, and after years and years of propaganda, their supreme leaders of North Korea, who have become deities to their people, have made some highly questionable decisions, as well as coming up with very odd, bizarre solutions to simple problems. Find out one of the more strange decisions the North Korean government made to fix a problem they created, on this episode of the Missing Chapter. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/themissingchapter/support

Scott Birdsall is a character. He is a business owner, builder, fabricator, race car driver, used car salesman, Dad, and many more things, but for the purpose of this piece we will start with Chuckles Garage. This is where Scott transitioned from the corporate world to chase the dream of building and creating hot rods, one of those famed builds is the classic "Gasser" affectionately known as "Strange Bird". However Scott doesn't just limit himself to Chuckles Garage he is also part owner of Resolute Motorsports who specialize in improving 911's from 1983 to 1989 for either the road, track or safari rally's. Last but not least we can't not touch on the fact Scott currently holds the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record for a diesel vehicle, beating previous record-holder, Uwe Nittel and his Mercedes Benz C300D 4MATIC, by just over 13 seconds in "Old Smokey".Now "Old Smokey'' his beloved truck is hard to characterize, maybe the best way is to say it is an IMSA race car hiding under 1949 Ford truck sheet metal. It is however registered and legal to drive on public roads and with the squeeze of the loud pedal it obliterates a pair of rear tires at will. This is in part thanks to a massive wave of torque from the turbocharged Cummins engine that sits up front. Honestly the truck defies easy explanation, and therein lies its appeal. It is cool because it's so functional in ways that it shouldn't be. Most people wouldn't build a race car out of a 1949 Ford F1 pickup, and for those who would, it is extremely doubtful they would go to the lengths Scott did. Originally, he didn't build Old Smokey to set records at hill climb or top speed events; he actually bought it to fix it up and flip (hence the used car salesman).Back to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and its 156 turns over the course of 12.42 miles. Scott has the current best diesel time of 11 minutes and 24.065 seconds, beating the diesel record set by Mercedes-Benz in 2016. His end goal is to get the record under 10 minutes in "Old Smokey". I know he will do it because Scott already made the impossible happen in getting a 1949 Ford F1 up a mountain faster than anyone else, that number is just going to get lower as Scott gets better

Take one 1949 Ford F1 pickup truck. Add a full-tube race chassis, a raced prepped Cummins diesel with compound turbochargers, and an insane builder/racer named Scotty Birdsall. Do that, and maybe, just maybe, you too could set a world record at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and in the process best one of the oldest, and most well-respected automakers the world has ever seen.  Scott Birdsall of Chuckles Garage in Santa Rosa, California created “Old Smokey” out of a farm truck which he purchased for a mere $250.00. Initially slated to be a parts hauler for his shop, the old F1 quickly escalated into one of the coolest diesel-powered vehicles ever created.  Old Smokey however isn’t Scotty’s first foray into the world of mechanized awesomeness though. Some may remember Strange Bird, the 1962 Ford Falcon Gasser that was powered by a supercharged 401 Buick Nailhead. Or Brutus, the BMY Harsco M931A2 6x6 5-ton tractor. Either way it doesn’t much matter as this week on the Hot Rod BBQ, we’ve got him, and he’s here to tell us not only about his new world record, but how he got into this business, how he loathes the corporate world, and what’s next in his pursuit of flat-out speed.  We’ve also got a wicked 1965 Volvo P1800 racer that we pulled from the Hemmings classifieds in honor of our special guest because, it looks like something he’d get a kick out of!

The film will investigate the truth behind Izzy's death aimed at finding justice for Izzy and will do so by examining the complexities of his life. At a time where we as a country are faced with addressing the racial injustices that exists prevalently amongst us, and advocating to hear stories for Black men, women and transpeople, we believe that this film is a super important discourse and for that we are matching the next $500 in donations towards the campaign for STRANGE BIRD. Augie March: Live at The Old Museum, Bowen Hills, 17 August 2019 From humble origins in Shepparton, Victoria, the story of Augie March has wound its way through periods of underrated accomplishment, untimely deaths, six albums, national and international tours, award wins and nominations, and the occasional lengthy hiatus. Singer/guitarist Glenn Richards, guitarist Adam Donovan, bass player Edmondo Ammendola and drummer David Williams first came together in 1996 as tertiary students. The band name was taken from the protagonist of a novel by Canadian-American author Saul Bellow. The band's first two EPs, "Thanks for the Memes" (1998) and "Waltz" (1999) were released on Ra Records. For the recording of debut album "Sunset Studies" (2000) Glenn Richards's friend Rob Dawson was brought in to play piano, though he tragically died in a car accident in January 2001. Kiernan Box was brought onboard to play keys for second album "Strange Bird" in 2002 and the lineup has remained stable ever since. Maintaining what might be described as a modest, though devoted fanbase was blown out of the water in 2006 with the release of third album "Moo, You Bloody Choir", which was nominated for ARIA Album of the Year and won the Australian Music Prize. Lead single "One Crowded Hour" took out APRA's Song of the Year and was voted number one in Triple J's Hottest 100. The success of "Moo, You Bloody Choir" led to new opportunities for the band such as North American tours, support slots with acts including Andrew Bird and Crowded House and two special concerts at Kings Park in Perth with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Fourth album "Watch Me Disappear" was released in 2008 and the following year Augie March embarked on stripped-back tour of the east coast dubbed "On The Quiet", with mostly acoustic instruments. Shortly after, the band took a major hiatus, and in 2010 Glenn Richards released a solo album, titled "Glimjack". Since then the band have come back together to record the albums "Havens Dumb" in 2014 and "Bootikins" in 2018. "Bootikins" was produced by longtime Nick Cave collaborator Tony Cohen, who was lured out of retirement to work with the band, although he died before the album was finished. In 2019 Augie March played a 10th anniversary "On The Quiet" tour, stopping in Brisbane to perform to a reverent audience at The Old Museum. While the music may sound beautiful and even sombre, the band were in a jovial mood between songs and we are pleased to have preserved the majority of their banter for the enjoyment of the listener. Recorded by Blake Howson Mixed by Conner McDonald Special thanks to live engineer Brendan Wright Show production, engineering and host: Scott Mercer Originally aired via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 7 June, 2020

Left, sitting like a normal bird. Right, screaming: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. I still have this rotten cold, although I’m getting over it. As you can hear, my voice is pretty messed up, so for this episode I’ll let birds do some of the talking for me. Yes, it’s another weird bird calls episode! We’ll start with this cute little call: [yellow-bellied sapsucker call] That’s not a dog’s squeaky toy, it’s a yellow-bellied sapsucker. Yes, that’s a real bird. It’s a type of woodpecker that lives in much of eastern and northern North America, breeding in Canada and spending winters in the eastern United States and Mexico. I get them in my yard sometimes. The sapsucker will also drum on dead trees and other items to make a loud sound to communicate with other sapsuckers. It mostly eats tree sap, but it also eats berries, small insects, and fruit. To get the tree sap, it drills small holes in tree bark, usually in neat rows, and licks up the sap that oozes from the holes. If you ever see a tree with rows of little holes in the bark, that was done by a sapsucker. It can sometimes even kill trees this way, but for the most part it doesn’t hurt the tree unless the tree is already dying. Males and females both forage for insects to feed their babies. They usually dip the insects in tree sap before feeding them to the chicks. Yummy! Next up is this little grunty call: [mute swan call] Maybe it’s not exciting or loud, but it’s made by a bird you wouldn’t expect to hear, the mute swan. I mean, the word mute is right there in its name but it’s not mute at all. The mute swan is a big white waterfowl from Eurasia, although it’s been introduced to other parts of the world since it’s so pretty. Its legs are black with an orange and black bill, and it has a long neck that it uses to reach plants that are deeper underwater than ducks and most geese can get at. Its wingspan can be seven and a half feet across, or 2.4 meters. It’s more closely related to the black swan of Australia and the black-necked swan of South America than it is to other swan species from Eurasia. Mute swans get their name not because they can’t make sounds, obviously, but because they’re not as noisy as other swan species. Not only does it make the little grunting sounds we just heard, it will sometimes hiss aggressively if a person or animal gets too close to its nest. Also, swans can give you such a wallop with their wings that they could knock you out stone cold, so it’s best to just watch them from a distance and not get too close. When mute swans fly, their wings make a distinctive thrumming sound that helps them stay in contact with other mute swans. This is what their wingbeats sound like: [mute swans flying] That sounds more like a UFO than a bird, just saying. Next is a weird metallic call that doesn’t sound like a noise a bird could make either. It sounds like an industrial machine of some kind: [white bellbird call] That’s the sound the male white bellbird gives to attract a female. It also happens to be the loudest bird call ever recorded. In late 2018, an ornithologist from Brazil teamed up with a bioacoustician from the United States. They traveled into the mountainous forests of the Brazilian Amazon to record both the white bellbird and our next bird, which I’ll get to in a minute. The male white bellbird is white with a black bill with a lo...

This week we're going to learn not about strange birds, but about strange sounds some birds make. Thanks to Sam for the suggestion, and thanks to Llewelly and Leo for suggesting two of the birds we feature today! Further watching: Greater prairie chicken courtship display A bittern, weird swamp bird: An American woodcock, adorable: Ocellated turkey, beautiful and goofy: Greater prairie chicken: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. Halloween is over and we’re all just about sick of candy, or maybe that’s just me. Either way, if you live in the northern hemisphere we’re heading into winter, but if you live in the southern hemisphere spring is in full swing! And spring means birdsong! Thanks to Sam for the suggestion that we do a whole episode about interesting bird calls, and thanks to Llewelly and Leo for some excellent bird suggestions. But we can’t cover all the weird bird calls out there in one episode. I think I’ll make this a recurring topic, and every so often we’ll get a weird birdsong episode. This time we’ll learn about a few birds of North America, although one is from Central America. Let’s start with this unusual sound. [Bittern call] That’s the call of the male American bittern, a type of heron that lives throughout most of North America. It’s brown with paler streaks that help camouflage it in the reeds and water grasses where it spends most of its time. It likes freshwater marshes and other wetlands with lots of tall plants to hide in. When the bittern feels threatened, it stands still, points its long bill upwards with its neck stretched out, and sways slightly to imitate the reeds around it. But it still does this even if it’s standing out in the open, because while it’s a neat bird, it maybe is not exactly a genius. The bittern eats fish, crustaceans, insects, and other small animals. Like many birds, whatever parts of its food it can’t digest, like fish scales and dragonfly wings, form into pellets in its digestive tract that it regurgitates later. Males sometimes fight over territories by flying upwards in a spiral, both birds trying to stab each other with their bills. The male is the one that makes the weird call we just heard. He gulps air to inflate his esophagus, which is the inside part of the throat, and uses the air to make his call. This is more similar to the way frogs call than birds. He also clacks his bill. He only makes this call during breeding season, which is in the spring and summer. Next, let’s listen to the call of another North American bird, the American woodcock: [American woodcock sound] The American woodcock is a relatively small bird with short legs, basically no tail, large black eyes, and a long pointy bill. It’s considered a game bird although I’m not sure why, since people don’t seem to eat it. It’s brown with black and lighter brown markings which camouflage it perfectly among dead leaves, and it looks like a shore bird because it’s actually closely related to shore birds like sandpipers. It lives in woodlands and pastures throughout eastern North America. It uses its long bill to probe the ground for earthworms, and the tip of the upper half of the bill, properly called a mandible, is flexible so the woodcock can grab a worm without actually opening its beak. It also eats small insects and other invertebrates, and seeds. It’s mostly active at dawn and dusk, and it migrates at night. In spring, the male woodcock attracts females by a flight display called sky dancing. He spirals upward, then down again, chirping melodically while the wind through three specialized primary feathers in his wings make a twittering sound, which is what we just heard. Next is this bird, which was suggested by Llewelly. [ocellated turkey call] That’s the ocellated turkey, also called the green peacock. It mostly only lives in a small area of Mexico called the Yucatan Peninsula.

This summer Ana and I, in preparation for the "great long distance experiment" got to travel a bit around Maine and Canada and Vermont. On one occasion I had a prolonged discussion with a good man, here to be nameless to protect his reputation, about we humans and the big picture and what can be done about it all. It was a real and good pleasure and I hope I hadn't offended him as I usually do when I talk about these things. Anyways - one last thing. I had mistaken Andrew Bird for Bobby Bare Jr. This is because Mr. Bare has a song which is close to my dyslexic heart called "Strange Bird" hence if I have a few in me I start mixing things up in a poor way; like saying that Andrew Bird has a senior version in the country and western scene. That is clearly not the case. Be sure to check out "Strange Bird" it's really good. Anyways this is the short version which made the podcast: 01. Richard Hawley - As the Dawn Breaks 02.
