Send us a textIn the episode, I am sharing a sermon I preached recently at Calvary Baptist. It is a sermon the life of Samson. It stirred my heart to think that a man a flawed as Samson would be listed along with the other wonderful Old Testament saints. Samson was a mess, but he made the list.If you like this sort of episode, let me know and I would be happy to do more. If you did it better, which wouldn't be too hard, send me what you produced. In this episode, Brother Byron reflects on this past Sunday's events, including the heartfelt message shared and the special Legacy lunch held in honor of Pastor Jonathan Tharpe, marking his final Sunday as pastor. He also briefly touches on the ministry of Clarence Sexton during his time at Calvary Baptist and Highland Park.Brother Byron then dives into an important topic—the world's growing fascination with the supernatural, mystical, and dark forces, contrasted with the life-giving truth of Jesus Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. Drawing from Scripture, he offers insights on why this shift is happening and challenges fellow ministers to respond with wisdom and purpose.

Brian Kelly and the LSU recruiting staff have done it again!!!The Tigers have now landed commitments from four of the top five players in the state of Louisiana in the 2025 class with 4-star IOL Devin Harper announcing his plan Tuesday night to play for the purple and gold. Harper, a junior at Calvary Baptist in Shreveport, is the third ranked player in the state of Louisiana and the sixth ranked interior offensive lineman in the 2025 recruiting staff.Going into the 2024 season, LSU will have the privilege of continuity on the offensive line with four of five starters returning. However, those four starters likely will not be back in 2025. Between Will Campbell, Emery Jones, Garrett Dellinger, and Miles Frazier all likely continuing to the next level after this upcoming season, offensive line coach Brad Davis will need to rely on the young core to step up and be the future starters. Harper, along with several other players coming in the 2024 recruiting class, will be instrumental in transitioning the offensive line into the 2025 season and beyond.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDON for $20 off your first purchase.FanDuelNew customers, join today and you'll get TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS in BONUS BETS if your first bet of FIVE DOLLARS or more wins. Our guest today is Mark Calhoun, District Superintendent for Wyoming and our topic is context: how important understanding the contextual lay of the landscape is to effective ministry. I have a world of respect for Mark Calhoun. Mark is extremely thoughtful and always engages his brain before he speaks. He epitomizes mindfulness in a leader. An unedited Adobe file of the transcript is HERE. Note: Unedited. Part of Mark's drive towards context emerged from his time at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. The focus there was on understanding the demographics and the community makeup of the local church. Who is there? What does it look like? Mark served in Wichita, Kansas before coming home to the Mountain Sky Conference. He was four years in Polson, Montana and eight in Lander, Wyoming before taking the Superintendency in Wyoming in 2020. He has been a gifted connectional leader in those three plus years. Gifted. Mark mentions he is a Type 2 on the Enneagram, and that is a helper and defined better HERE. If context is important to Mark, and it is, being in relationship is also of importance to him. He works hard at being relational. Easy to state as a goal, much more challenging to live out. I confess: my heart was strangely warmed when Mark talked about how he felt sitting with people in moments of joy and pain. It is frankly a blessing that we as pastors are called to sit with people in the extremes of life: joy, pain, anxiety. Part of the call. This podcast was produced on December 12 & 13, for release on December 18, 2023. Please share if it speaks to you. My next two guests will be the Reverend Doctor Tom Barlow of Iliff School of Theology and Reverend France Davis, Pastor Emeritus of Calvary Baptist in Salt Lake City. Those podcasts will be released on January 1st and 15th respectively. Tom Bandy (with Dr. Barlow) and Black History (with Pastor Davis) will be our starting points for discussion. I will muse a little on things connectional on January 29th. If you have a potential guest for me, send me a note. I would love to hear from you in general. My email is dennis at (@) mantuan dot (.) org (and written that way to confound harvesting bots.).

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Yesterday as I was reading my Proverb for the day, a verse jumped out at me. “In the way of righteousness is life, And in its pathway there is no death” (Proverbs 12:28). I immediately thought of Psalm 23:3-4 and saw a connection between the three verses. When we are following our Good Shepherd as “He leads us in the paths of righteousness” we will not fear death when it crosses our path. Jesus told Martha in John 11:25-26: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" A true believer in Jesus Christ cannot die, in other words, he or she can never be separated from the Lord Jesus Christ. This brought to my mind another passage in John 10:27-29: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.” I don't know how many times I quoted these verses at the bedside of a dear believer as they were drawing their last breath before stepping into eternity. Did you notice in the central verse of this Psalm that the personal pronoun changes from “he” to “you”. (“He leads me”, “He makes me”, “He restores me”). In the first three verses David was speaking about the Shepherd, but now in verse 4 David is speaking to the Shepherd. He is not before us but beside us, leading the way and calming our fears. The "vale of deep darkness" represents any difficult experience of life that makes us afraid, and that includes death. Sheep lack good vision and are easily frightened in new circumstances, especially where it's dark; and the presence of the shepherd calms them. My friend, what a tremendous assurance we find in these passages as we go through the dark times of pain and suffering, distress and depression, and often the parting of a loved one. The rod was a heavy cudgel with which the shepherd could stun or kill an attacking beast, and the staff was the shepherd's crook, which he used to assist the individual sheep. At evening, he would have the sheep pass under the crook one by one so he could count them and examine them (Lev. 27:32). I'll never forget the dear older saint in Holland Michigan, at Calvary Baptist where I pastored for 8 years, say just before she sang, “If you take His hand in the Light, you won't have to look for it in the darkness.” Wow! How true. I've told the story of the pastor whose wife died many times to illustrate this verse. He and his two young children were leaving the cemetery, driving back to the house and the children were asking about death and if it hurt. The father noticed that as the big trucks would pass them in the other lane that they cast a big shadow in their lane. As the next truck approached, he asked the children, “Do you want me to hit the truck or hit the shadow?” They immediately exclaimed, “Daddy, hit the shadow, it can't hurt you”. Today, my dear friend, you can trust your Great Shepherd to always be with you in whatever you might be facing in life. He promised, “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5)! God bless!

Father-in-law to Pastor Galen Call, Rev. Harmon Eggleston shares a message in the early days of Grace Church Roseville.Rev. Harmon Eggleston passed away in 2001. Included are some notes from his obituary. Rev. Harmon Eggleston, beloved pastoral ministerRev. Harmon B. Eggleston of Taylor Mill spent his last 12 years as a minister in pastoral care, visiting rest homes, hospitals and hospices.About 18 months ago, Rev. Eggleston was moved to an Erlanger nursing home due to the effects of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Though he often couldn't recognize them, parishioners kept coming to see him - repaying the visits he had paid on them, their parents or grandparents."My father was such a people person. He loved visiting with people and talking with them, providing encouragement to them, " said his daughter, Marilynn Hall of Taylor Mill. "The sad part was when he lost the ability to communicate with people, about six months ago, because that was what he loved to do. But people kept coming to visit him because he had been so faithful visiting them. People just loved him."Rev. Eggleston died Monday at Baptist Village Care Center in Erlanger. He was 89."He had a real heart for people, " said Rev. Charles Wagner, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Covington, where Rev. Eggleston spent his retirement as an assistant pastor. "He was a real caring person, and people loved him. He was a fine speaker and a student of the Word, but he was ideally suited for pastoral care."Rev. Eggleston was ordained as a minister in 1944 at Sand Run Baptist Church in Boone County, then served at five churches, including three in Indiana. He retired in 1981 from Highland Baptist Tabernacle in Fort Thomas after 42 years as a pastor there, then served as an assistant pastor at Calvary Baptist until 1993.He also served on the board of trustees for Piedmont Bible College, in Winston-Salem, N.C., and the Kentucky Mountain Mission in Beattyville.Rev. Being in a false church under false doctrine is one thing. Witness what goes behind closed doors in another thing. Sister Tania was able to endure both. Thank God, her sister kept nagging her to hop on the truth of God train. One of the biggest challenges Sister Tania had to face was the fact that she was very close to burying her own child. No loving parent wants to bury their child even when the child is hard headed. All a loving parent can do is bring up the child in the way of truth so that they do not depart from the faith. Sister Tania begged God to give her son some more time and God certainly answered. Yes holiness is the way but as I say moreover.. it is NOT an easy way and it will never be. It does not matter who you are, if you are following holiness the right way, you will go through trial and tribulations. Keep sister Tania and her family in prayer so that they can continue to strive and hold on to God's unchanging hand. Keep my and my family in prayer so that we continue to strive and hold on to God's unchanging hand.

Listen as the late SM Lockridge takes us on a journey and unlocks the power and majesty of our Creator and the incredible work that his Son; Christ Jesus accomplished on the cross and the victory of his resurrection! 0:00 (Intro) Where a sick man can get well 3:02 He's the Owner 4:50 The Lordship of Christ 11:31 The Invitation 13:55 (Conclusion) The Lord is my Shepherd Shadrach Meshach Lockridge (March 7, 1913 – April 4, 2000) was the Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, a prominent African-American congregation in San Diego, California, from 1953 to 1993. He was known for his preaching across the United States and around the world. Life and work: Lockridge was born in Robertson County, Texas, the oldest of eight children and the son of a Baptist minister. A graduate of Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, he worked for two years as a high school English teacher. In 1940 in Dallas, he felt led to preach. In 1941 he married Virgil Mae Thompson. In 1942, he accepted his first pastorate at Fourth Ward Baptist Church in Ennis, Texas. In August 1952, he was named pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego where he served until retiring in 1993. During Lockridge's tenure at Calvary Baptist, a predominantly African-American congregation, his ministry reached more than 100,000 people. He preached at crusades, revivals, religious rallies and evangelistic conferences around the world. He also served in key regional, state and national positions with the Baptist Church, including being elected as the Moderator of the Progressive Baptist District Association, President of the California Missionary Baptist State Convention, and the first president of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America, where he held all three major positions simultaneously. He held doctorates and numerous honorary degrees, and was often sought as a public speaker, even after he retired in 1993. He served as guest lecturer at numerous schools and universities and on the faculty of several others, including the Billy Graham School of Evangelism. Lockridge was active in the civil rights movement, and under his leadership Calvary Baptist hosted several of its leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr. Lockridge's best-known message is "That's my King!", notably the six and a half minute description of Jesus Christ contained at the end of the hour-long sermon (the popular title comes from Lockridge's repeated refrain). YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX_7j... and Google Videos, Godtube, and other video-sharing websites have numerous variations of this message in video clips of varying lengths, in both English and Spanish (subtitles or with a translator), with various video and musical backdrops, and user views reaching into the multi-millions.
