How does one learn to love the Bible again? For Liz Charlotte Grant, it is almost like a story from a movie: girl meets Bible, falls in love, discovers Bible's secret past, falls out of love with Bible, but eventually realizes she was really in love the whole time, once she learned how to look at the Bible in a new way. This is an eye-opening conversation about how the tools that scholars have used throughout the history of scripture, with names like Hermeneutic and Midrash and Eisegesis, helped bring the Bible back to life after deconstruction, and reconnect Grant with the essence of what she loved most about scripture.Liz Charlotte Grant is an award-winning nonfiction writer based in Colorado, USA. Her debut nonfiction book, Knock at the Sky: Seeking God in Genesis After Losing Faith in the Bible, was released by Eerdmans Publishing Co. on January 7, 2025. In 2024, she wrote a viral article chronicling the disturbing third marriage of an icon of white American evangelical purity culture, "Elisabeth Elliot, Flawed Queen of Purity Culture, and Her Disturbing Third Marriage," the Revealer Magazine, a publication of the Center for Religion and Media at New York University. Grant's Substack newsletter, the Empathy List, has received recognition from the Webby Awards and the Best of the Church Press Awards. Her work has also appeared in outlets such as the Huffington Post, Religion News Service, Hippocampus Magazine, Brevity, Sojourners, the Christian Century, Christianity Today, US Catholic, National Catholic Reporter. Find more of Liz Charlotte's work at:https://lizcharlotte.com/ https://www.threads.net/@lizcharlottegrant https://www.instagram.com/lizcharlottegrant https://www.facebook.com/lizcharlottegrant Find your guides at Quoir Academy! John continues his conversation with Matt Beaudreau. In Part 1, Matt discussed his perspective on education, the flaws in traditional education, the concept of real learning, and his mission to transform the educational system through his organization, Apogee Strong. Matt believes that true education is about developing sovereignty, freedom, and the ability to define your path in life. In this episode, they discuss the importance of engaging in respectful conversations (even when disagreements arise), questioning everything to keep learning and growing, and much more! Everybody has something amazing to offer the world, and a lot of times, they've learned it through being a total moron and through pain.  They're still also struggling to get better somewhere.” “Be careful on both extremes. If you consume too much and don't put it out, you're like a sponge that's full of water. A sponge is designed to be wrung out so it can absorb again. But if you're always giving and never receiving, you're dry, hard, and kind of brittle.” “Don't get stuck in infobesity. Don't get stuck in just consuming and never acting on what you consume.” “Leaders don't care about the number of followers; they care about building more leaders.” “Good questions are always better than the answers. As soon as you assume you have the answer, you inherently stop growing in that arena.” “It's okay to take a lot away from a book, wrestle with concepts, and say, ‘I don't agree with this, but I do agree with that.' Growth comes from that wrestling.” “At the end of the day, all education ends up being self-education. So there's got to be a bit of self-awareness in there too.” BOOKS MENTIONED: Radical Honesty: How to Transform Your Life by Telling the Truth by Brad Blanton (https://a.co/d/6Dj8gni) The Alter Ego Effect: The Power of Secret Identities to Transform Your Life by Todd Herman (https://a.co/d/3Ugz1Z8) PODCASTS MENTIONED: The Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast (https://tinyurl.com/CraigGroeschelLeadershipPod) Read to Lead Podcast (https://tinyurl.com/ReadToLeadPodcast) USEFUL RESOURCES: https://apogeestrong.com/ https://www.apogeestrongfoundation.org/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/matt-beaudreau-071a5b99/ https://www.instagram.com/mattbeaudreau/ https://x.com/MattBeaudreau https://www.facebook.com/matt.beaudrea https://youtu.be/JPAXMNXy5UQ?si=1Mk62agvQHNOKLRm https://youtu.be/fv8tYbljc0s?si=ISC9MBP8EmCIlBwX  CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://iamjohnhulen.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen     Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen     Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/johnhulen     LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen     YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA     EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/

In today's episode, I discuss the difference between letting the Bible say what it says and making it say what the preacher wants it to. We will also discuss the differences between exegesis and eisegesis. This is not a trivial matter. It is akin to the differences between lightning and a lightning bug.I want to make a strong case in favor of exegesis. When we practice exegesis, we "lead out" of the text, the truth placed there by the inspiration of God. When we practice eisegesis, we "lead into" the text ideas that form in our human minds. Listen to the episode, and decide what you want to be: a preacher who tells you what God said in his Word, or one who reads into the Bible what he wants it to say. The choice seems cut and dried to me. Let me know what you think.Support the Show.Subscribe to this podcast. Leave us a review. Point your friends to this podcast.Contact me at: alancarr@gmail.com. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. — Galatians 3:28 CALL OUT: I want to give a shout-out to Chris DeBoer in Peachtree, GA, who is a new monthly partner. I am thankful for you, Chris, and all who support us monthly and faithfully. So many people have taken this text entirely out of context. They use it to leverage ideological positions that this Scripture does not endorse. Let me be clear: This text in no way advocates for social equality and inclusion. It does not promote the fair treatment, opportunity, and acceptance of all individuals regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. However, please do not hear me say this text endorses racism, slavery, economic oppression, and gender fluidity. It does not endorse either side of this argument because these issues are not what this text is about. Here is why: This text does not speak about social equality. It is speaking about spiritual equality. Sometimes, when we read Scripture, we are going to be tempted to read into a text from our own cultural perspective. This is called eisegesis. Eisegesis is an interesting word. It is a compound Greek word that forms one word and meaning. "Eis" means "into."  "Egesis" means "interpretation." Thus, eisegesis is when we interpret a text by reading into it our own presumptions and biases. This is something we should always avoid when reading Scripture. It is easy and tempting to do, especially when you have strong beliefs and convictions about specific social issues. There are people in our time who have some pretty strong opinions on social issues. They are triggered when they hear social references to race, ethnicity, economic disparity, slavery, and gender. Thus, it is very hard for them to put these ideas aside when reading the Scripture. When they encounter a text like this one that seems to defend or dismiss their position, they will pounce all over it. On the other hand, a skilled student of the Scripture exegetes the text. Exegesis is another compound word. "Ex" means "out from." Thus, exegesis is when we draw out the meaning of a text from the text. It's understanding what the text is saying based on its own words, context, and historical background instead of adding your own ideas. You're trying to uncover the original meaning intended by the author. So, if we exegete this text correctly, we will draw out the author's intent instead of importing, imputing, and inserting our intent. So let's do that. But let's reread the text: "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." First, Paul lists three subordinate groupings that are transcended in Christ. They are ethnicity (Jew/Greek), economic status (slave/free), and gender (male/female). Paul never suggests that these categories cease to exist or are no longer a present reality. Our ethnicity, status, and gender are a part of our human existence. But there is something that supersedes them. This leads to Paul making one positive assertion. We (i.e., believers) experience a oneness (i.e., spiritual unity) found only in Christ. Our unity is not found in this world. It is made possible and encountered only in union with Christ. This means our spiritual unity takes precedence over social identity in Christ. If we now carefully place this exegesis into the greater context of the chapter, it will provide even more precise meaning. Paul says our spiritual oneness in Christ is a status received by faith, celebrated in baptism, superseding but not absolving our ethnicity, economic status, and gender. Spirit-filled believers enjoy the blessing of living in a new spiritual family that comes with serious spiritual blessings. The blessing is found in the next verse, which we will read together tomorrow. This is a sound exegesis of this text. As you can see, it does not promote social equality and inclusion. It celebrates a spiritual reality in the church, made possible by Christ. This transcendent reality affects how we perceive each other in Christ without absolving our individuality or condoning human sin. Here's the application of this sound exegesis: Take another look at a believer in Christ. See them from a spiritual perspective and not only a social perspective. If you tend only to see their natural qualities, look beyond that today. Work in your heart to perceive them differently. See them as your brother and as your sister in Christ. Then treat them like a divine member of the spiritual family because, in Christ, you finally gain a diverse family with one thing in common—one Good Great Father. #SpiritualEquality #InChristAlone #BeyondSocialDivides #BiblicalInterpretation #UnityInDiversity ASK THIS: How can you actively cultivate a mindset that sees fellow believers not just through the lens of societal labels but as fellow members of the spiritual family in Christ? Reflect on a time when you may have unintentionally allowed societal biases to influence your perception of someone in the church. How can a deeper understanding of Galatians 3:28 shape your interactions and relationships within the body of Christ? DO THIS: Treat your spiritual family as your family. PRAY THIS: Father, help me to see others through the lens of Your love, recognizing the unity we share as members of Your spiritual family. Guide me to treat every believer with dignity and respect, as brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen. PLAY THIS: Good Good Father.

We've probably all heard a person claim that the Bible says something that it clearly doesn't. How does this happen? In this episode, Gary Wilkerson and Joshua West discuss the difference between exegesis and eisegesis. Exegesis is searching for the Bible's meaning, regardless of what we wish it would say instead. Eisegesis is imposing our thoughts and desires onto our interpretation of the Bible. Reading scripture correctly requires great humility because we must allow God to correct our thoughts about him and his commands. View the show notes: https://wcm.link/gwp236c

Much like the Kool Aid Man busting through brick walls, Stephen is ready to put some modes and methods of biblical interpretation on blast. In particular, he's thinking that perhaps eisegesis isn't exactly the supreme sin that some say it is, because he thinks that (almost) literally everyone does it on a regular basis. And a lively discussion with actual disagreement ensues. Exegesis literally means “to draw the meaning out of” a given text. Eisegesis, by contrast, is the practice of reading one's own interpretation into a text. An exegete makes every attempt to view the text objectively, while an eisegete replaces the clear and most obvious meaning of a passage with subjective opinion. Moses sprinkled blood on “both the book itself and all the people” (Hebrews 9.19-20) in an ancient ritual symbolically sealing the terms of the relationship between the book's Author (God) and the book's audience (Moses and the ancient Hebrews). Moses “took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people” (Exodus 24.7). He did not interpret the words through the filter of his own limited understanding. He simply read God's word publicly and let it speak for itself.

Recently someone new to our church asked me why we do such long series at GraceLife, months to months??? 90 minutes later (JK), I defined one of our core values, Biblical, meaning we let the bible dictate what I preach not the opposite. Being Biblical has many legitimate perspectives, but for us at GraceLife, it's one of our greatest passions, if not # 1. With so many new people coming, I thought it important to take a week to explain how we teach God’s Word at GL. This sermon will either get you all fired up or bore you to tears, but it's critical to understand this GL distinctive.

by Pastor Chuck Ryan The Power of the Spoken Word Text: James 3:1-2 Thesis: The privilege to teach comes with a warning because of the power of the spoken word. a 1. James is not only concerned with “good works” but also “good words”. A. The spoken word has its origins in the Godhead. “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” Genesis 1:26 B. Speech is a universal gift of God. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27 C. God has entrusted mankind with the gift of the spoken word with a warning. “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” James 3:1 Jesus states, “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.” Matthew 12:36 2. James is aware that there is an eagerness among some Christians to be “teachers” (NIV) or “masters” (KJV). A. Jesus in Matthew 23 reveals the seven “Woes” of the religious leaders of his day. 1. Beware of those who will never sit under the teaching of another person but are willing to teach a class. 2. To be a good teacher you must have a teachable spirit. a. Learn from others that are mature in Christ and who have sound understanding of scriptures; either in person or from “Biblical Commentaries”. 3. Too much authority given to an immature Christian can produce arrogance. “He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.” 1 Timothy 3:6 3. James makes it clear that teaching is not only a position of honor but responsibility. A. Teachers need to teach the Truth of God and not their own opinions. B. A teacher must practice good “Exegesis” and not “Eisegesis”. The Apostle Paul Admonishes Young Timothy * “Until I come, devote yourselves to the public reading of scripture, to preaching and teaching.” 1 Timothy 4:13 * “Watch your life and doctrine closely.” 1 Timothy 2:15 * “Do your best to present yourselves to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

2 - Important Definitions

The Preaching Matters Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2022 17:06

In this episode, I share some important definitions which we will use throughout this series.Show NotesHomiletics: Homiletics is the art and science of saying the same thing that the text of Scripture says.  Andrew Blackwood, “Homiletics is the science of which preaching is the art and the sermon is the finished product.”  Homiletics is “The science and art of sermon preparation.” Exegesis: From the Greek word which means “a narration or an explanation.”  The noun form of the Greek word does not occur in the Greek New Testament. The verb form means, “to lead out of”, does occur.  It can be found in Luke 24:35; John 1:18; Acts 10:8; 15:12, 14; 21:19. The use of this word in John 1:18 is of special interest.  This verse literally tells us that Jesus Christ “exegeted” the Father to man.  That is, Jesus Christ is the narration or explanation of God the Father to man, John 14:9. Eisegesis:  this word means exactly the opposite of “exegesis”. While “exegesis” means “to lead out of”, “Eisegesis” means “to lead into.” Eisegesis is a practice that every preacher should do his best to avoid at all costs! Our mandate from the Lord is to “Preach the Word”, 2 Timothy 4:2. To do this properly, we must allow the Word of God to simply say what it says. We must never be guilty of reading our own prejudices, opinions, or interpretations into the text. It is vital that we, as preachers, allow the Word of God to speak! After all, the Bible, not your education, thoughts, or opinions, is “quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,” Heb. 4:12. Our opinions and prejudices will die when we do. However, the Word of God is forever settled in Heaven, Psa. 119:89; and, as Jesus Himself said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matt. 24:35. Hermeneutics: Hermeneutics may be defined as “The science of expounding or interpreting what a passage of Scripture says.” It is “The science of biblical interpretation.” It comes from the Greek word which means “to translate.” It refers to the Greek god Hermes, who was the messenger for the other gods to men. He brought the message of the gods to mankind. Very literally, the preacher who practices good hermeneutics and homiletics functions in the same fashion. He has the power to translate the message of God to mankind! Sermon: The sermon is “the finished product of the processes of exegesis, hermeneutics, and homiletics.” The word “sermon” comes from a French word, which means “a speech or a conversation.” As this course will teach us, anything that does not rest upon sound homiletical, hermeneutical, and exegetical principles does not deserve to bear the name “sermon.”Our logo was created by Jesse Carr. In this special bonus episode, Erika discusses two key elements to bible study: interpretation and covenants. Our understanding of what God's word says to us is usually based on our ability to interpret what's going on in the text. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Tim. 3:16–17)Eisegesis vs. Exegesis reading into the text using your worldview and cultural filter vs. starting with the author's intent and asking the following questions:https://www.theopedia.com/exegesisCultural Christianity is full of "Christian Sayings" but a lot of those saying are not actually in the bible. Some may be paraphrases or interpretations of what people have thought it was saying and other times, these sayings or colloquialisms are just something somebody made up. The bible is made up of two main covenants or agreements that God makes with people. As Christians, we are in agreement with God under the "New Covenant" or "New Testament" so that is what applies to us as believers in the resurrection of Jesus.
