State of the Arts Episode 97: The Star Trek Special just released! Four enthusiastic trekkies converge over Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi juggernaut on State of the Arts! Derek Upright hosts this out-of-this-world episode along with myself, classic entertainment connoisseur Anthony Bonilla and my music composer husband Joe Grado Jr.! Together we boldly go where no SOTA episode has gone before as we discuss a vast array of topics; from which Star Trek characters we most identify ourselves with to recent technological advancements that were predicted in this ground breaking franchise. A gracious shout-out to Star Trek actor James Lee Stanley, who was a guest on State of the Arts a while back. Playing a Klingon, Bjorn and other extraterrestrials, he became a regular on Star Trek Deep Space Nine. From humble beginnings as a 1960s prime time show to an entire universe of movies, shows, comic books, cartoons, toys and conventions, Star Trek has reached explosive success in the past six decades. This episode is dedicated to Nichelle Nichols who passed away this year at age 89. She played Uhura on the original show and was the first African American actress to be cast in a leading role on main-stream television. Hats off to Gene Roddenberry for the creation of this ingenious phenomenon that has evolved into one of the world's most intriguing subcultures! A grateful declaration of thanks to my three beloved cohosts on this riveting new episode! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

It's always a warm delicious treat to sit down with James Lee Stanley. There's a reason he's opened for everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Art Garfunkle, Bill Cosby (before we knew), Robin Williams, Dionne Warwick, Robin Trower, and Steven Wright for 3 years. His 50+ years of friendship and musical partnership with Peter Tork were covered from start till two days before Peter's passing when he was felled by rare cancer under his tongue. Shockingly, James survived his own bout of tongue cancer months later, when his beloved wife Evelina suggested an endoscopy, without cause. James was back performing mere months later. Last September, days after sitting down with us here, James fell off his roof, for the first time not under the watchful eye of his Evelina, broke his back, was airlifted for surgery, took no pain meds, and did a concert two weeks after surgery. This is a substance- sans substances. James treated us to a solo rendition of All I Ever Wanted, one of the many songs he and Peter recorded together. Just today he posted a video of them performing it: https://youtu.be/9VmeUvSYS1A. James also treated us to fab, funny, apropos, Wake The Flock Up, one of my favorite cuts from his All Wood And Doors, Moonlight Drive, and to the ink just dried, brand new, Carnival. Gorgeous vocals and stunning guitars are James' trademarks. We talked about his All Wood And Stones, Doors, and Led series, what inspired it, the players who've graced it, his upcoming album, his 36th, the documentary, The Opening Act – The Extraordinary Journey of James Lee Stanley directed by documentarian Gary J Katz (Badfinger, Humble Pie, Steve Marriott, Manassas), which has received a Peoples Choice Award, was in the London Lift-Off Film Festival and was accepted into the LA, Chicago, and Atlanta Film Festivals, awaiting judging. James Lee always leaves me wanting more. This week my co-host Derek Upright and I welcome a music legend to State of the Arts. James Lee Stanley, who is a long-time friend of Derek and his family. This extraordinary talent has a successful career that spans for decades. From countless awards to playing alongside good friend Peter Tork to playing space aliens on Star Trek, James Lee Stanley has shown himself to be a Renaissance man. This vocalist, guitarist, singer and songwriter has thirty four album releases. In March of 1999, FI Magazine listed his Freelance Human Being as one of the best recordings of 1998 and one of the Top 200 Recordings of all time. In the Village Voice it was written of him, "It is simple really. With James Lee Stanley you get great songs, great guitar playing, great voice and a gifted comedian as well. You are in for a very entertaining evening." He has performed with many diverse acts including Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams, and Nicolette Larson. For three years in a row, Steven Wright selected him to be his opening act. A well-rounded artist in every sense, he also has a keen talent for sketching. Not to mention his appearance on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where he played a singing Klingon, a tall Bejoran and other extraterrestrials. His blog has also drawn over 1,100,000 hits since its genesis back in July 2008. With a huge thank you to my co-host Derek Upright, I want to express my gratitude for having this legendary, clever, gifted and accomplished icon on my podcast. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

James Lee Stanley is chicken soup for my pandemic weary soul. I'm talking Grandma Katz's soup, the most flavorful, soothing, healing, and delicious. I was having a kinda funky day, an hour and a half in James' good company… hearing his stories, listening and watching him play, was just what the doctor ordered. There's a reason this man has opened for everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Art Garfunkle, Bill Cosby (before we knew), Robin Williams, Dionne Warwick, and Robin Trower, to name just some. His 50+ years friendship and musical partnership with Peter Tork was covered from start to bottom when Peter was felled by rare cancer under his tongue. Shockingly, James survived his own bout of tongue cancer months later, when his beloved wife Evelina suggested an endoscopy, without cause. James recounted the discovery, cause, treatment, and his miraculous, speedy recovery to health, singing at a gig a mere few months post-surgery. He detailed the diet to boost his immune system and, from which he lost 35 pounds, and has kept it off for two years. That alone makes this worth the listen. But there's so much more from this man who opened for Steven Wright for three years at the height of his fame, great story there, has released 35 albums, so many stories there, wrote a musical, appeared on Star Trek Deep Space 9 for five years, we didn't even get to that. James treated us to a haunting new one, Heart in Amber, nothing like hearing the origin of a song, Moonlight Ride, from his All Wood And Doors, and a Stanley classic, When Love Comes Knocking Around, which I can't stop singing. Happens every time I hear it. We talked about his upcoming album, All Wood And Led with Dan Navarro, and the Gary J. Katz (who made docs on Badfinger, Humble Pie, Steve Marriott, Manassas) documentary, The Extraordinary Journey of James Lee Stanley, making festival rounds currently and soon to drop. The man could always play, sing and entertain the crap out of us, he's looking and sounding better than ever. Looks like the year and half forced hiatus served in its fashion. I feel so damn good in the wake of this time with James. Two thumbs and all other digits way up. A treasured friend and a gem of an artist, you can find all of James' music at JamesLeeStanley.com - I for one, after hearing him again want more, more, more. I had the pleasure of speaking with James Lee Stanley. I've known him as a musician for years and was fascinated talking with him. Could have spent hours listening to him. James is a multitalented singer/songwriter who has opened for Bonnie Raitt, Robin Trower, worked with Poco, and Peter Tork, among others. James talks about how he got into music, his influences and life on the road. He also has 34 albums/cd's out. During our chat, he talks about recovering from throat/tongue cancer - he had surgery in 2019, and 8 weeks later was singing again.. He gives us his views on politics (YEAH !!!!!) and is just a fascinating guy ! He has a weekly show on Thursday nights, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time on Facebook and a radio show on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. on the Folk Music Notebook. James can be found at jamesleestanley.com, facebook.com/jamesleestanley, instagram and twitter @ jamesleestanley, and his cd's are on every music platform available - CD Baby, Reverb Nation, to name a few. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michelemarotta/support

And now, for something completely different… This past week, I accompanied the near-legendary James Lee Stanley to Teaneck New Jersey where he did a radio interview/live in-studio concert on WFDU with the host of the Traditions radio show, Ron Olesko. I had intended to interview James Lee for a future episode of the Tales of the Road Warriors podcast, but due to technical difficulties, I couldn’t complete the mission. However, on the way back home from the radio station, James and I talked about many things, and during the course of the conversation, among other things, we swapped stories about our past gigs. Which lead to me telling hime about something that happen to me, and it’s on of my favorite TALES OF THE ROAD WARRIORS!!!! The duo toured widely in the 90s (and beyond), and left us with some amazing live and recorded music! But, James Lee Stanley is a long-time creator, writer, and musician, crafting his own very fine music for many decades. We were honored to be able to talk to James Lee, about his decades-long relationship with the late Peter Tork, his own music, and so much more. Chad Watson is a world class bass player, songwriter, sideman and sidekick (just ask his lovely wife, Pam Loe). Artists he’s tour and /or records with include John York, Ronnie Milsap  and Charlie Rich, Freebo and Bonnie Raitt, Ja  mes Lee Stanley, Chris Hillman, The Burrito Brothers, Janis Ian, Ezra Mohawk and others. Some of the things I talk about with Chad include: Playing at one of my favorite venues, Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood with Freebo who used to be Bonnie Raitt’s bass player, and the Kulak’s Woodshed archives, which have been relocated to their Youtube channel,  where you can still see live performances from some of the performers mentioned in our conversation. He also takes about his days on the road with Ronnie Milsap;  A brush with Kim Fowley, reminisces about some of the old clubs like the Palomino and a missed opportunity to sit in with Stuff, the original house band from Saturday night live when we swapped stories about missed opportunities. I mentioned the I chickened out when Marty Rifkin invited me to sit in with the house jam at the Palomino. And then there’s great tale about country star Dale Watson - sorry, no spoilers. Chad is currently working on a few recording projects and has just tapped up a project with James Lee Stanley. He continues to perform live with his lovely wife, Pam Loe. Oh how I loved spending time with James Lee Stanley, a one of a kind, gazillion threat: amazing songwriter, stupendous voice, charming, handsome, smart, funny... fabulous! And, oh the life he's lived. A pro at 16 with a recording contract and friends like Cass Elliot and Peter Tork, before the Mamas and Papas and The Monkees... Henry Dilz, early advocates Les Paul, Bill Graham, a 10 album recording contract with Wooden Nickel (RCA), Jerry Weintraub... starting his own label, Beachwood Recordings, the first artist to record a Stephen Bishop tune, having hits of his own, running around with author Tom Robbins who put him in a book or two, the inside on how Peter became a Monkee, and Graham Nash joined Crosby & Stills, sharing Billboard raves with Queen, Loggins & Messina, and Alvin Lee; opening for Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams (a mensch), Steven Wright (for 3 yrs), missing opportunities, Seinfeld, Jermaine Jackson, making opportunities, all over the place. An Emmy, Cable Ace Award-Winner, who's always earned his living doing what he loves... from arenas to intimate clubs, playing 300 gigs a year, for years, being reunited with Sheila E in my living room, having not seen her since he hired her to play percussion, long before Prince, his upcoming collaboration with Dan Navarro... there were shoutouts to Birthday Boys Liberty Devitto & Don Most, Wendy Liebman, gigging tomorrow night (8/9) with Arsenio Hall... and songs! James opened the show with his brand spanking new, rockin' Live It Up Now (my new theme song?), a mid-show surprise, updated for today's trying times, and closed with his, fantabulous, Let's Get Out of Here. Crazy fun with Oscar, Grammy Nominee, Stephen Bishop. We were voyeurs in his amazing home which houses Gold and Platinum Records, the back off the guitar John Belushi smashed in Animal House––signed by the entire cast, a pic of The Beatles, signed by The Beatles; a huge painting of Hendrix, ridiculously cool stuff everywhere. Nothing cooler than Stephen, who’s written over 650 songs… say what…. he sang one of his latest, Almost Home, the theme of the new Benji Movie on Netflix, the first song he ever wrote, a song sung with his first band, The Weeds, his version of a Jagger song, the theme of Animal House, and, the song he sang in the film, plus, the Theme of Tootsie, Separate Lives, and, oh yes, On and On! Hell yeah! Plus, Blue Window, from his latest CD, Blueprint. More than a mini-concert, with stories, stories, stories… Bette, Barbra, Whitney, Clapton, good friend of both of ours, James Lee Stanley, who was the first to record a Stephen tune, Art Garfunkle, who had Stephen sing on his version of my wedding song, a great Belushi story, his manager, Robert Ellis, married to Diana Ross, who was later my boss man, his recent tour of the Philippines, which has led to an upcoming documentary, It Might be You. Links below to the trailer, to Stephen’s book, Songs in The Rough, with amazing originals of huge hit songs from amazing artists; and, to his website, where you can find the keys to his kingdom, tour info, music, and merch. James Lee Stanley came into the studio and mesmerized me with his flawless control of his voice and guitar. This is without a doubt, the best performance on CAU so far. Many many thanks to Donna Frost for introducing us. James Lee has recorded more albums/CDs than anyone I personally know. Check out his myspace page and make sure you go see him live. He tours extensively and will be near you soon.
