Marya E. Gates's wonderful new book “Cinema Her Way: Visionary Female Directors in Their Own Words” includes interviews with 19 groundbreaking women directors — including Susan Seidelman, whose 1985 smash (masterpiece, even?) “Desperately Seeking Susan” is our subject for today.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Author Marya E. Gates joins us on the occasion of her new book, Cinema Her Way: Visionary Female Directors in Their Own Words, as a prelude to a series of screenings at the Brattle introduced by Marya. Two of the directors from her book will join her for these screenings: Bette Gordon on April 17 and Mira Nair on May 10th.
Kerry and Collin are joined by Catherine Mary Stewart, star of the 1984 cult classic "Night of the Comet," an apocalyptic sci-fi film where the world ends at Christmastime, which is the best time to go shopping. They are also joined by returning guest Marya E. Gates, author of the new book "Cinema Her Way: Visionary Female Directors in Their Own Words." The four of them talk in-depth about "Night of the Comet" while Stewart tells some great production stories from working on the film, while also talking about some of the other Christmas films in which she has appeared. And yes, there is also talk of "The Apple," "Dudes" and "The Last Starfighter." Then, the discussion switches over the to subject of Gates' new book, which examines (among many other things) the continuing struggles in the industry facing some of the best female filmmakers working today. As if that weren't enough, there's also the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. It's a longer episode than usual, but well worth it. As we mentioned last week we're digging into the show archives and highlighting past episodes that each embody why we launched this program in the first place. When we started this podcast three years ago, we wanted to acknowledge the shared experience of the COVID-19 pandemic and its deep impact on our Kaiser Permanente health care workers. We also set out to explore how to take better care of our community... and ourselves. The episode we are highlighting this week is Frontline Workers in Their Own Words. If you're new to Live Well and Thrive, we hope you enjoy your first time listening to these three quintessential episodes. We hope you take the time to listen again -- as we have. Thank you and enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Recorded Oct. 9, 2024Astronomers have now discovered thousands of planets in orbit around other stars. Dr. Weintraub discusses those discoveries, and predicts the progress astronomers are likely to make in their more detailed studies of these planets over the next fifty years. Then he considers the consequences of those potential discoveries for Roman Catholicism, Mainline Protestantism, Christian Creationism, Seventh Day Adventism, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism -- for all of which the discovery of a planet with life on it may be profound. These thoughts are based on the writings of key religious leaders on this topic -- in the past and in our times.Dr. David A. Weintraub is Professor of Astronomy Emeritus at Vanderbilt University where he founded and directed the Communication of Science and Technology program, and conducted research on the formation of stars and planets. His most recent book is The Sky is for Everyone: Women Astronomers in Their Own Words (2022; with Virginia Trimble). Previous books include Religions and Extraterrestrial Life: How Will We Deal With It? (2014), Life on Mars: What to Know Before We Go (2018), How Old is the Universe? (2010), and Is Pluto a Planet? (2006). He also created the Who Me? series of inspirational scientific autobiographies for fifth-grade level readers (from World Scientific Publishing), which helps young people see themselves as scientists.
On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Capitol Weekly hosted the California Ballot Forum: 2024 Election Preview. Through spirited discussion and reasoned debate, proponents for each side explored the strengths and weaknesses of the proposals in a conversation moderated by a journalist. Today's episode features a discussion of Propositions 33 and 34. In a state known for confusing, contentious ballot-box battles, Props 33 and 34 may be some of the most confounding ever, especially for the average California voter, who isn't likely to be familiar with the background that plays a central role in both Propositions 33 and 34 but isn't actually mentioned in the text of either. AIDS Healthcare Foundation buys prescription drugs for HIV and AIDS patients at a federally endorsed discount. The foundation then turns around and bills insurers for the full price of those drugs, generating millions of dollars for the foundation. AHF president Michael Weinstein has used that windfall to fund ballot measures on housing development, drug prices, requiring the use of condoms in porn and, most notably, rent control, twice: in 2018 and 2021. Both times, Weinstein failed to persuade Californians to pass measures promoting affordable housing, which he calls “a human right, a social justice issue.” The California Apartment Association opposes Prop. 33, and also are behind Proposition 34, which seeks to blow up Weinstein's business model for funding ballot measures. On paper, Prop. 34 would require that healthcare providers who spent more than $100 million on anything other than direct patient care over a decade and operated housing with more than 500 high-severity health and safety violations spend at least 98 percent of their revenue from the federal discount prescription program on patients. Those parameters actually could apply to more than one organization but make no mistake: the measure is squarely aimed at hindering Weinstein's serial funding of ballot measures. Because these measures are inextricably intertwined, we have chosen to present them together. Proposition 33 EXPANDS LOCAL GOVERNMENTS' AUTHORITY TO ENACT RENT CONTROL ON RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Proposition 34 RESTRICTS SPENDING OF PRESCRIPTION DRUG REVENUES BY CERTAIN HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. The "Yes on 33/No on 34" side was presented by Susie Shannon Susie Shannon is the Policy Director for Housing Is A Human Right. Susie has worked with unhoused and low-income communities since 2005. Having previously been unhoused herself, she advocates for unhoused and low-income communities through rent control policy, preserving public housing, fighting for new housing to be prioritized for the unhoused, and promoting adaptive reuse and prefabricated modular buildings for the unhoused. The "No on 33/Yes on 34" side was presented by Nathan Click Nathan Click is a national public affairs and communications expert. His California based firm, Click Strategies, builds communications and public affairs campaigns for civic leaders, non-profit organizations and private sector clients. Click Strategies serves as a political advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and led all communications efforts in the Governor's campaign to Stop the Republican Recall, with Click serving as a senior advisor. Click Strategies serves as a political advisor to Attorney General Rob Bonta and a number of political and civic leaders across the nation. 2023 was another busy year in health care. As the covid-19 pandemic waned, policymakers looked anew at long-standing obstacles to obtaining and paying for care in the nation's health care system. Meanwhile, abortion has continued to be an issue in much of the nation, as states respond to the Supreme Court's 2022 decision overturning the constitutional right to the procedure. This week, Rachel Cohrs of Stat, Sandhya Raman of CQ Roll Call, and Joanne Kenen of Johns Hopkins University and Politico Magazine join KFF Health News chief Washington correspondent Julie Rovner to discuss these issues and wrap up the year in health. Also this week, Rovner interviews KFF Health News' Jordan Rau about his joint KFF Health News-New York Times series “Dying Broke.” Plus, for “extra credit,” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week that they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: Business Insider's “‘I Feel Conned Into Keeping This Baby,'” by Bethany Dawson, Louise Ridley, and Sarah Posner. Joanne Kenen: The Trace's “Chicago Shooting Survivors, in Their Own Words,” by Justin Agrelo. Fernando Valenzuela was only twenty years old when Tom Lasorda chose him as the Dodgers' opening-day starting pitcher in 1981. Born in the remote Mexican town of Etchohuaquila, the left-hander had moved to the United States less than two years before. He became an instant icon, and his superlative rookie season produced Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards--and a World Series victory over the Yankees. Forty years later, there hasn't been a player since who created as many Dodgers fans. After the Dodgers' move to Los Angeles from Brooklyn in the late 1950s, relations were badly strained between the organization and the Latin world. Mexican Americans had been evicted from their homes in Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles--some forcibly--for well below market value so the city could sell the land to team owner Walter O'Malley for a new stadium. For a generation of working-class Mexican Americans, the Dodgers became a source of great anguish over the next two decades. However, that bitterness toward the Dodgers vanished during the 1981 season when Valenzuela attracted the fan base the Dodgers had tried in vain to reach for years. El Toro, as he was called, captured the imagination of the baseball world. A hero in Mexico, a legend in Los Angeles, and a phenomenon throughout the United States, Valenzuela did more to change that tense political environment than anyone in the history of baseball. A new fan base flooded Dodger Stadium and ballparks around the United States whenever Valenzuela pitched in a phenomenon that quickly became known as Fernandomania, which continued throughout a Dodger career that included six straight All-Star game appearances. Daybreak at Chavez Ravine: Fernandomania and the Remaking of the Los Angeles Dodgers (University of Nebraska Press, 2023) retells Valenzuela's arrival and permanent influence on Dodgers history while bringing redemption to the organization's controversial beginnings in LA. Through new interviews with players, coaches, broadcasters, and media, Erik Sherman reveals a new side of this intensely private man and brings fresh insight to the ways he transformed the Dodgers and started a phenomenon that radically altered the country's cultural and sporting landscape. Erik Sherman is a baseball historian and the New York Times best-selling author of Kings of Queens: Life beyond Baseball with the '86 Mets and Two Sides of Glory: The 1986 Boston Red Sox in Their Own Words. Dr. Dale Bredesen is not only intelligent, talented and someone who can think unconventionally, but someone who is also kind, humble and can express very complex systems in terms we can all understand. Today we learn more about his groundbreaking research in dementia. It was an honor to have Dr. Bredesen on the podcast back in 2021 and now a double honor to have him on for a second time to discuss one of his most recent books The First Survivors of Alzheimers. Dr. Dale Bredesen is a scientist, a researcher and an expert in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. He published over 200 papers, which many of them you can find in a pubmed search. In 2017 he wrote a groundbreaking book and New York Times bestseller called : The End of Alzheimer's and then several years later wrote a follow up book: The End of Alzheimer's Program (2020). And last year he wrote “The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words”. Dr. Bredesen is a professor at UCLA, but he's also taught at UC San Francisco, and the University of California San Diego. He directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before going to the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. Most doctors and experts in this field say there is no cure for Alzheimer's. But Dr. Bredesen blatantly says that Alzheimer's is absolutely reversible and preventable. He is going against the grain with his research, which he has been working on for decades. He's been consulting patients who have been told by their doctors to get their affairs in order before they die, because there is nothing they can do to help them. But now, Dr. Bredesen is not only giving these people hope, but actually a future they can look forward to. This episode is sponsored by Oxford Healthspan. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, Athletic Greens, and Paleovalley. Until recently, the most popular approach to treating Alzheimer's has been to focus on managing the symptoms in the brain. Now brain experts and neurologists know that a better, more effective approach to helping Alzheimer's patients requires a full-body assessment with all-encompassing, highly individualized treatment that includes improving the microbiome, a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, hormonal balance, adequate sleep, and more.In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Richard Isaacson, Dhru Purohit, and Dr. Dale Bredesen about why Alzheimer's is not just a disease of the brain, but one of the entire body.Dr. Richard Isaacson serves as Director of the Center for Brain Health and Director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic (APC) at Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine. He previously served as Director of the APC at the Weill Cornell Memory Disorders Program, Assistant Dean of Faculty Development, and associate professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine & NewYork-Presbyterian. He remains an adjunct associate professor of neurology in the Department of Neurology at Weill Cornell. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker and Birch Living.Alzheimer's disease is one of the most significant global health threats we face today. It is an ailment that, as our population ages, is forecasted to become a worldwide epidemic. Mainstream medicine would have us believe that it can't be prevented, is untreatable, and is progressive, with most patients not surviving beyond 3–11 years post-diagnosis. If you are confused during this time of The 'Rona, political power grabs and a new global agenda, sit back with pen and paper, THIS is the episode for you...From Rudolf Steiner's statements from 100 years ago, to George Soros, David Rockefeller, Bill Gates, George Bush Sr. and Klaus Schwab, Michael pieces together their plans for the NWO, and exposes us to the playbook for world domination—transcribed in their own words so you can fully understand, this is no theory—these are the plans in THEIR OWN WORDS. Today's guest is Dr. Dale Bredesen - an expert in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. He wrote a groundbreaking book and New York Times bestseller that you probably have already heard of : The End of Alzheimer's (2017) and then several years later wrote a follow up book: The End of Alzheimer's Program (2020). And just several weeks ago he published a new book called “The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words”. This is a great book to hear first hand real stories of people who have reversed their Alzheimer's diagnosis. Dr. Bredesen is a professor at UCLA, but he has also taught at UC San Francisco and the University of California San Diego. He directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative condition where we have a progressive decline in cognitive function, like thinking and reasoning. People with Alzheimer's are eventually unable to do any activities of daily living, simple things like bathing, driving and dressing. It's the most common form of dementia in people over the age of 65; about one in 10 people over 65 has Alzheimer's disease, but if you're a woman, your risk is 1 in 5. Nearly half of all people over age 85 are affected by Alzheimer's. That's 50%! What's crazy is that almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women. So we explore why this is with Dr. Bredesen today and what we can do to lower our risk. Most doctors and experts in this field say there is no cure for Alzheimer's. But Dr. Bredesen blatantly says that Alzheimer's is absolutely 100% reversible and preventable. He is going against the grain with his research, which he has been working on for decades. He's been consulting patients and getting results with his ReCODE protocol, while traditional treatments haven't.
