In this episode of The DOT POD, Josh and Anya are on location in Hauppauge, NY on Long Island to talk about bascule bridges - what they are, how they work, and how we maintain them. There are five bascule bridges, essentially drawbridges, on Long Island that are owned and operated by New York State DOT. We sat down with a couple of employees who work with these bridges daily. Mitch Rippe is a bridge repair supervisor and Paul Barnes is a bridge operator. They shed light on what it takes to operate and maintain these bridges, some of which are over 90 years old, and how the DOT is working tirelessly to keep New Yorkers safe and connected.
Suffolk County (/ˈsʌfək/ SUF-ək) is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of New York, constituting the eastern two-thirds of Long Island. It is bordered to its west by Nassau County, to its east by Gardiners Bay and the open Atlantic Ocean, to its north by Long Island Sound, and to its south by the Atlantic Ocean. As of the 2020 United States census, the county's population was 1,525,920,[1] its highest decennial count ever, making Suffolk the fourth-most populous county in the State of New York, and the most populous outside of the boroughs of New York City. Its county seat is Riverhead,[2] though most county offices are in Hauppauge.[3] The county was named after the county of Suffolk in England, the origin of its earliest European settlers. Suffolk County incorporates the easternmost extreme of both the New York City metropolitan area and New York State. The geographically largest of Long Island's four counties and the second-largest of New York's 62 counties, Suffolk County is 86 miles (138 km) in length and 26 miles (42 km) in width at its widest (including water).[4] Most of the island is near sea level, with over 1,000 miles of coastline.[5] Like other parts of Long Island, the county's high population density and proximity to New York City has resulted in a diverse economy, including industry, science, agriculture, fishery, and tourism. Major scientific research facilities in Suffolk County include Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton and Plum Island Animal Disease Center on Plum Island. The county is home to Stony Brook University in Stony Brook and Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale. Eyewitness News got an alert that Suffolk County police were going to release surveillance video of Megan Waterman leaving a hotel in Hauppauge -- the last place she was seen. "As reporters were thinking, again, why do this now?" recalled Kristin Thorne. "They've had this video for so many years -- why now? And they said they want to keep the case going." Then on May 9, 2022, Suffolk County Police released a 22-minute 911 phone call from Shannan Gilbert the night she disappeared in 2010. "The 911 tape was sort of as advertised," said Einiger. "It was Shannan Gilbert sounding terrified running for her life." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Megan Waterman was a young woman from Scarborough, Maine, who tragically became a victim of a serial killer. Born in 1986, she led a troubled life marked by struggles with drug addiction and other personal challenges. However, those issues shouldn't define who she was and the fact that she was loved. Megan Waterman and all of the other victims were much more than just sex workers. They were people who were loved and who loved and who deserved much better from the authorities and society itself. In June 2010, Megan Waterman went missing from a hotel in Hauppauge, New York, while she was in the area with a friend for an escort job. Her disappearance was part of a string of similar cases, and it raised concerns about the safety of sex workers in the area. Sadly, in December 2010, Megan's remains were discovered in a remote area of Long Island. Her murder, along with the murders of several other women, became known as the "Long Island Serial Killer" case.In this episode we hear from Megan Waterman's sister who details the time that they spent together growing up and how her sisters murder has effected her throughout the years.(commerial at 13:25)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Sister Of Gilgo Beach Victim Megan Waterman: 'She Was My Best Friend' | Riverhead, NY PatchBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Daphne Ashbrook had a very memorable appearance on the Star Trek DS9 episode, "Melora," playing the titular character in an episode that examined physical disabilities through a 90's sci-fi lens. Today, the episode is still discussed and debated, and this ensign's actress is ready to explain her side of the story, as well as tales from other productions ranging from modern films, period pieces, and a few things timey-wimey.Daphne tells us about wearing the Elaysian makeup and body prosthetics, navigating the tricky sets in an electric wheelchair, flying in the air on wires while kissing Alexander Siddig, and her take on the plot and intentions of "Melora," and how she views it through a modern perspective. Plus, her secret audition for a Star Trek movie, working with David Hasselhoff on "Knight Rider," the incredible stunts she did on an obscure made-for-TV movie, her trio of “Murder, She Wrote” appearances loaded with Star Trek alumni (as well as Florence Henderson), and behind-the-scenes stories from her starring role in the American “Doctor Who” movie with Paul McGann. While his time on-screen might have been brief, Vadia Potenza is one of the few actors to play Spock in Star Trek history. Today, his journey through Hollywood brought him to a different profession that can make or break a film or TV show. Potenza is best known to Trekkies as one of the young Spocks in "Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock," and has fond memories of meeting and being directed by Leonard Nimoy, working with Robin Curtis and Lee Remmick, and what it was like to become a Vulcan. We also learn about some of his childhood gigs, including "Father Dowling Mysteries," why he moved away from performing, where life took him as an adult in directing and editing, and a second chance at playing Spock in an unexpected film. Plus, being a production assistant with Jim Henson's studio for the Muppets, stories from BET's "The Iron Ring" MMA reality tv show, editing A&E biography documentaries, and his job today working with Karamu Brown. The Life & Legacy of Leonard NimoyIn honor of the late Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek historian and Nimoy archivist Bonnie Moss visits Trek Untold to tell us about the man behind the pointy ears. We get the inside story of Nimoy's life beyond Star Trek, discussing his passion for photography and the arts, reading some of Nimoy's poetry (and how that reflected his worldview), his opinion on The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins, the feud between Nimoy and Shatner, what Nimoy thought of the longevity of Star Trek and Trekkies, and what his final days were like. Bonnie is a lifelong Trekkie, and also tells us about the evolution of the fandom from its beginnings to where it is now in the internet age, why Star Trek was so important to her as a child, how a particular episode of the original series influenced her choice of profession, what happened to the original fandom when Star Trek was canceled after its third season, and more! Her murder, along with the murders of several other women, became known as the "Long Island Serial Killer" case.In this episode we hear from Megan Waterman's sister who details the time that they spent together growing up and how her sisters murder has effected her throughout the years.(commerial at 13:25)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Sister Of Gilgo Beach Victim Megan Waterman: 'She Was My Best Friend' | Riverhead, NY PatchBecome a supporter of this podcast:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

"It was Shannan Gilbert sounding terrified running for her life." The next episode of "Eyewitness to Gilgo Beach" drops Thursday, March 7. Her murder, along with the murders of several other women, became known as the "Long Island Serial Killer" case.In this episode we hear from Megan Waterman's sister who details the time that they spent together growing up and how her sisters murder has effected her throughout the years.(commerial at 13:25)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Sister Of Gilgo Beach Victim Megan Waterman: 'She Was My Best Friend' | Riverhead, NY PatchThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5080327/advertisement

2011 - Long Island, NY In June 2011, 22-year-old Megan Waterman from Scarborough, Maine, disappeared after leaving a Holiday Inn hotel in Hauppauge, Long Island, around 1:30 am. Six months later, authorities discovered remains on the north side of Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, concealed by brush and poison ivy. Within two days, three more sets of remains were found, all belonging to young women, wrapped in a burlap-like material. The victims were identified as Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Megan Waterman. New York was gripped with fear as additional bodies were discovered, leading the media to name the perpetrator the Long Island Serial Killer (LISK). However, amid the frenzy, four families were desperately seeking compassion and support. Little did they know, they would be embarking on a decade-long quest for justice. Megan Waterman was one of those victims… and this is her story. This is part one of two. Part two will be released on August 15th. Blog with source will be posted later today.
