Mona Loffelmann, founder and executive director created African Family Revival Organization (AFRO) in 2015 because of a disconnect she witnessed between youth and seniors and the larger community. According to Mona, seniors don't have access to the things most of us do, for example, health and allied health services, due in part to a language barrier or a fear of going out into the community. Some may have dementia and others are just isolated. Mona felt compelled to make a change. During our conversation, Mona speaks about the many programs offered by AFRO to both seniors and young people in the Waterloo Region and surround areas such as Guelph. AFRO received funding from Red Cross which allowed them to create a program whereby youth would support seniors by dropping off supplies, which turned into a buddy program. The organization received further funding from the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) and the Government of Canada to create an in-person program that brings together seniors and youth. This episode also includes a conversation with Ms. D (or Diney), a 75 year old “Senior Ambassador” at AFRO. Ms. D has become a spokesperson helping to connect AFRO with other seniors in the community, and Elise who is a student involved in AFRO. They both talk about how their relationship is mutually beneficial.   Resources: Afrofamily.ca Phone (548)-889-3506 (519)-223-AFRO (2376) Address 737 Belmont Ave. W, Suite 4 Kitchener, Ontario, N2M 1P3   About the guest: Mona Loffelmann, Founder and Executive Director, African Family Revival Organization (AFRO) Over the past decade, Mona has been working to ensure that all members of our community feel valued, included, and heard. In this role, she is be responsible for developing and implementing outreach programs that engage black and other marginalized groups, building relationships with key stakeholders, and working to create a more inclusive and equitable community. Mona possesses adequate communication, organizational, and resilience skills. She is enthusiastic about her work and continues to collaborate with other organizations to provide community-oriented services. More importantly, Mona is constantly looking to collaborate with other organizations to track and measure the success of outreach efforts, making recommendations for improvement as needed. Mona has a strong understanding of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion and she strives to educate others through presentations and training programs. In fact, Mona has completed a number of training programs including; “Train the Trainers Resilience Training” in partnership with Family and Children's Services of Waterloo Region. She has also completed “Intercultural Leadership Training” with Muslim Social Services of Waterloo Region. Mona is the Project Coordinator and Cultural Navigator for AFRO's Support Through Generations program, as well as the Executive Director of AFRO. Mona, along with the other AFRO board members, contributes to major decisions and changes that benefit the organization and community as a whole.

We are living in an interesting time to say the very least. We see preachers that are politically motivated delivering messages that are geared more towards social justices and culture rather than unpacking biblical truths. As we gear up for election season in America and all that is happening within Canada, we need to make sure we are rooted in God's Word. How should Christians engage in politics? How far is too far? What if the government is coming against our views and beliefs? How do we respond and engage with that? Join host Andrew Marcus as he spends time with Senior Ambassador and President Emeritus of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada Bruce J. Today, we sit down with Gregory J Buda, Director of Education & Training Manager of the Dead Rabbit, at Dickie’s Bar in London where he has been  acting as Bar Consultant since their launch last year.   Where you can hear me drinking next: Next week, we meet Sam Carter, Senior Ambassador at Bombay Sapphire’s Distillery at Laverstoke Mill. If you haven’t been to Laverstoke, go. Not only is it the most sustainable distillery in the world but they make some great drinks too. Sam reigns over the place from the Empire Bar where I get to sit down with him for a chat. Are you a regular listener of the Lush Life podcast? Guest Ted Kober, Senior Ambassador with Ambassadors of Reconciliation, talks about what a healthy congregation looks like, why anyone would want to research that topic, and what is common among unhealthy congregations. He also talks about how Bible literacy plays a part in the health of a congregation and how American Christians differ from other Christians. Ted gives some tips to learning about your congregation’s health and how forgiveness and reconciliation play a role in moving forward. Add the sum of Photographer Dan Frievalt's career pivots, and you find him enjoying his most rewarding and lucrative work ever. He's gone from graphic designer, to wedding photographer, to photographer of High School Seniors. Are you a Photographer who works with Seniors? Are you wondering if it's viable to hone in on this niche exclusively? If so, today's conversation on The PhotoTellers is for you. Personally, I ESPECIALLY enjoyed his discussion of his Senior Ambassador program. Dan is taking a different angle on attracting clients, and it's doing good across the world. Remember: If you have a suggestion for Dan's new name of this program, leave it in the comment section below. Here's a photo of the lovely rockstar who didn't collect 600 pairs of shoes--it was 800!!! Bri & 800 shoes I think you'll also enjoy the approach Dan takes when the parent says, "I love this, but I didn't buy anything like this for his/her older siblings." How does he handle the objection? It's brilliant.   A few highlights from my conversation with Dan: Now that he doesn't photograph weddings, how does he handle that request? How does he use the time he would have spent on that wedding? Why has Dan made several career pivots? Rethinking the "Senior Ambassador" program. Hear how Dan is attracting clients (and publicity!) while doing good for others. How did raising his prices & "spoiling" his clients help Dan create better work--even before he had many clients?! How do Moms & Grandmas react to Dan's highly stylized, cinematic style? Do these products actually sell? Does he still have to create traditional portraits to please everyone? What products are selling well? How does Dan steer the client to order what he wants to sell? Hear a few of Dan's favorite marketing tips. Who is his biggest competition? How does Dan sell a product that parents did NOT buy for the older siblings? Hear Dan conclude our conversation as he explains why ours is "the greatest profession in the world." See more of Dan Frievalt's work on his WEBSITE, or connect with his Facebook page SENIORS UNLOCKED.
