They don't make stuff like they used to…turns out that's true for Denver's buildings as well. Art Writer and Architecture critic Michael Paglia has written about the Mile High's growth spurts over many decades for Westword, and he's seen some multi-story highs and lows, architecturally speaking. Michael joins host Bree Davies to discuss the city's built environment of the 21st century — the good, the bad, and the really, really ugly — while pointing out some of the bright spots in our architectural story. Read some of Michael's in-depth pieces for Westword on Denver's Architecture, both good and bad: “Ten of the Best New Buildings in Downtown Denver” (2019) “The Ten Worst 21st Century Buildings in Downtown Denver” (2015) “With the AIA Convention in Denver, A Look at Ten Architectural Gems” (2013) Bree and Michael talk about the One River North building with the canyon in the middle, as well as these buildings (and here's a lil' map of them, if you wanna do a tour): Prism - 999 17th Street Coloradan - 1750 Wewatta Street Via - 828 Broadway 2785 Speer - 2785 Speer Boulevard For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. During the 2019 AIA Convention in Las Vegas we invited a selected group of manufacturers and industry leaders to discuss the future of architecture and construction. Trends, technology, apps, BIM, customization, supply chain, and more insights on the first edition of Building Future. In this episode we sit down with Jason Zeeff, VP of Sales at Dri-Design. About Dri-Design: Dri-Design Product Catalog It was not created by a large panel manufacturer as a way to grab more market share, but rather by a single small business as a way to address significant shortfalls we saw in the metal panel systems we had been using for decades. A system invented from research and development based on real life experience of over 30 years, selling and installing many other systems. Our timeline also provided a history long enough to watch and see how the existing systems aged and performed, long term. During that time, experiences with other panel systems included delamination, staining due to the effects of weather on joint sealants and gaskets, rising costs of production, inefficient installation practices, and a general lack of color, texture and design options. There had to be a better way… So, with new ideals in mind, we began developing Dri-Design in the mid-90s. We were folding metal in our shop, origami style, to try and create a system that would not be burdened with the same flaws of previous metal panels. We were working to combine beautifully simple design with new objectives about the way a system could perform, both at the time of installation and for decades later. The result of our meticulous engineering was a style of metal wall panel system that had not existed previously. It was, and is, a 100% recyclable, pressure equalized rain-screen, architectural metal wall system that attaches to nearly any substrate without the use of clips or extrusions. It is not laminated, nor a composite material, so panels will never delaminate. It doesn’t require joint sealants, gaskets, or butyl tape, and therefore eliminates the staining and maintenance associated with them. It is manufactured efficiently and installs faster than any comparable product, saving time and money. Additionally, Dri-Design’s patented design has passed the most stringent air, water and structural testing requirements in the industry, including the AAMA 508-07 test for pressure equalized rain-screens, as well as Miami-Dade County hurricane testing. All of this in a system that provides nearly endless design possibilities, with an unlimited palate of colors, finishes, materials, textures, and custom perforations, including imaging. Dri-Design hits the mark where both form and function meet.

https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/PortraitEvanTroxel.jpg () How To Pass the Architect Registration Exam When Real Life Gets in the Way How long did it take you to become a licensed architect? How many years went by before you focused on your studies and passed the Architect Registration Exam (ARE)? How do you do all the things that are going on in your life and find enough time to study and pass the ARE? This week at EntreArchitect Podcast, Evan Troxel of Archispeak Podcast talks about How to Hack Your Life for ARE Success and Beyond. Evan grew up in the mountains as a very outdoor-loving person, always building houses and projects out of rocks and sticks. He jokes that his dad must have had the longest-standing permit for an addition to their house in Tahoe where they worked indoors in the winter and outdoors in the summer. He learned carpentry and construction skills from working with his dad, loved taking this apart and putting them back together, and developed technical drawing and writing skills throughout his education. He went on to win a Regional Opportunity Program (ROP) house design competition at the age of 16. He was accepted into Cal Poly Pomona, where he became aware that he would have to unlearn the things that he had learned all his life. In his third year, it finally clicked and he became more aware of why he was there: to be an architect. He currently works as a Senior Designer on higher education, K12 and civic projects. Evan loves involving his family and kids in helping to create things that allow them to go on adventures together. Right now, they’re working on designing a family camping trailer from the ground up. Follow their journey on http://spaceshop.co (SpaceShop.co). One day, Evan, http://naparchitect.com/ (Neal Pann), and http://www.flickr.com/photos/14003615@N04/sets/72157630449805880/ (Cormac Phalen) connected on Twitter following an AIA Convention and the idea of starting a podcast got thrown into the mix. They came together with various talents and created http://archispeakpodcast.com (Archispeak Podcast) as “the talk you’d hear in the office around the water cooler”. Evan’s newest project is a book he’s been working on about his 15-year process of completing the Architect Registration Exam and earning his license to practice architecture. http://www.arehacks.com (Learn more about ARE Hacks here). Why go through the Architect Registration Exam process when you don’t NEED to? Becoming a Better Person // Studying caused Evan to get up earlier, cut out things that weren’t important to him or pushing him to grow, and create discipline in his life. Finding a Seat at the Table // Being a licensed architect allowed him to be “in the club” to make the profession better. Personal Pride // The title of “licensed architect” freed him and allowed him to acknowledge and take pride in the work he completed to get there. What are some life-hacks to accomplish the Architect Registration Exam? Ask yourself: Where can you study? When can you study? What are you studying? How will you have study materials with you when you need them? How can you show up every day to accomplish the task? It’s very easy to schedule a test and show up to take it, but the hard part is to prepare: diet, nutrition, how to deal with distractions, learning to study, choosing to study with others or without, how to study around your family, etc. It’s less about hacking the ARE and more hacking your life. What is the one thing that small firm architects can do today to build a better business tomorrow? “Start. Whatever your ideas are, whatever you’re thinking about doing, don’t wait anymore: start. If you start today, you’re not taking on a giant mountain all at once, you’ll chip away at it one piece at a time.” – Evan Troxel You can sign up...

We might develop these ideas into new systems or new processes to make our world a little better. If these innovative ideas work for you, they most likely will work for others as well. And in the world of instant connnectability and a community of like-minded architects growing every day on our many social media channels, there is no reason to not share your ideas with the world. You hear it at the end of every episode “Share what you know.” This week on this episode of EntreArchitect Podcast, I am chatting with a friend, whom I met while sharing what I know on the internet, to discuss an innovative idea that she had and is now sharing it with her world. For the past several years many of us have been struggling to survive. We've taken the work we could get and reduced our expenses to the absolute minimum. As we crawl out from the darkness, the warm sunshine of a recovering economy feels so good. Even though our boards are beginning to fill, the pain of survival is lingering. Many small businesses, including many small architecture firms, after years of finding ways to keep the doors open are succumbing to the years of economic instability and calling it quits. For those of us who have made it through the storm have emerged with a new perspective. The days of pre-recession spending are unlikely to return any time soon. Money is short, debt is heavy and recovery is the primary focus. We're spending only what needs to be spent to build a stronger firm and much sacrifice remains. Many of my friends are evaluating their professional priorities. If they feel an expense is unnecessary or not earning them a significant return on investment, it's being cut from their budgets. One such investment seeing the axe is their long-time memberships to the American Institute of Architects (AIA). I think that’s a mistake. I think there are many advantages to membership and this week on the EntreArchitect Podcast, I will share 7 benefits to AIA Membership for Small Firm Architects. Please review this podcast on iTunes.
