On this, the 50th episode of the Woman Power Zone Podcast, Ariel is joined by returning guest, executive story-telling coach and author of the upcoming book, ‘The Storyteller's Mind Movie', Melissa Reaves to talk about how important it is to have milestone moments – like this one – and to celebrate them with story.KEY TAKEAWAYS We all have milestones, and they can little mini-milestones, but in storytelling we're always looking for these “Aha, oh my god, I get it, the lesson has just reached me, I'm there!”, or that you're not really sure what the message is yet but your know something major just happened. That can be a milestone and a springboard to you getting to the other side of your life. Some people say this chapter's closing and new one's beginning or In some cases a book is over and you're writing a new book, like the moment I knew my marriage was over. Notice the transformation in my story. As a storyteller, you want to have a story where at the beginning I'm happy, I'm thrilled, I'm having a great time. But, as the waves crashed against the beach and receded, that's what happened with my marriage and that's when I time travelled and brought us right back into the present tense. I slowed the pace right down because my life had gotten very scary and serious. Your story of getting into podcasting is a story of inspiration. You kept saying “then I did this and this showed up and then I did that and I did this”. Meanwhile you're pit-stopping and doing the research, but the research was inspired because it was guiding you because you knew deep down that you could do this and you wanted to do this. The universe brings it all in alignment for you. I work with executives and business leaders and I teach them to find their story and how to tell it so that when they're on a red dot with a microphone and they're giving a TedTalk, a keynote or a town hall and you want to inspire people, those come through stories. How do you tell a story so that people are leaning in and in their minds they have a movie playing. That's why my book is called ‘The Storyteller's Mind Movie' because you are doing that, every time you get very specific I can't help but see it in my head, every time you're vague I can't help but struggle and come up with my own characters – which isn't bad – but I train people to be mind move makers deliberately. BEST MOMENTS“Divorce was the right thing because with marriages you either grow together or you grow apart.”“All of a sudden I'm at another milestone, I just dropped off my youngest kid to college. I'm an empty nester and I don't know what to do with it. I know it's good because she's thriving and that's what I'm supposed to do as a parent, but I have a lot of time now – which is good because I've got my book projects.”“You want to tell stories that are scars not wounds, especially in the realm I'm in professionally.”“So many times people will have an idea and they'll talk themselves out of it and not even explore it or give it a chance. If it comes to you and it feels good, it's worth finding out what could happen.”ABOUT THE GUEST Melissa Reaves is a professional and award-winning storyteller and storytelling coach to executives. Today's episode features Jack Mozloom and guests Carlie Traylor and Whitney Brace who discuss what to expect at the upcoming Student Business Plan Competition at the NCPA Annual Convention.
On this episode Ariel is joined by Melissa Reaves, an executive storytelling coach, to talk about how stories can change lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Human beings are story telling machines. Everyone tells stories and have done since the times we lived in caves. Dating stories, family stories, in business – vision stories and case stories/studies. What I try to do is help people become “mind movie makers” because someone who really studies this craft can really ignite a lot of emotions inside the listener's head. Anyone can do it, but some of us have never been taught. I teach you how you can find your stories and then craft them so that they're really well laid-out with a nice arc. There's tension, you have your “ah-ha” moments and the listener goes on a journey with you. All you see over and over again in angel investment meetings is a slideshow with graphs and charts saying: “the problem”, and then more graphs and charts saying: “the Solution”. It's not emotional, I can't get excited about it. As an investor, there's a science and an art to starting a company. What I started to realise was that if you start with the story of a person having the problem, you come in as the hero. I spend most of my day helping companies get ready to do their investor pitches to find that story. Every story is a movie and we storyboard it like a movie, it has an opening scene and we title it, the second scene we title it, and the third scene etc. You know where you're going so you're not meandering or droning on and on and getting your audience frustrated and confused. These stories are well crafted but you want to tell them naturally, you don't want to sound canned or be too big or too monotone. The way you use your voice, the way you use pausing, balancing seriousness with humour, senses – making sure that people can see it, taste it, touch it, smell it, feel it, those are deliberate choices by the presenter/storyteller. I'm not a therapist, but I have found that the self-narrative that people hold can sometimes be healed during some of the sessions that I've worked on. I've seen some breakthroughs from clients on some moments, and these are business clients. BEST MOMENTS “If you start with an emotional story we're hooked. You want them to remember the story, that's why they're imperative and the way you tell stories is an essential business skill.” “I always try to find personal stories as well as business stories because people want to get to know the storyteller. Every story you tell needs to have ‘and this is what I walked away with and I'm giving to you'.” “Your listeners need to relate to you, see the story, be entertained, educated and the key thing: Not bored.” “Storytelling allows the listener to step into the shoes of someone else. With a really well told story, their hearts can open and they can think about maybe some of the self-narratives that were infused into their own heads growing up and maybe they weren't so true.” ABOUT THE GUEST Melissa Reaves is a professional and award-winning storyteller and storytelling coach to executives. For episode six, we are highlighting a great event being held by TecBRIDGE, an organization that is vital to the business community of Northeastern Pennsylvania. On Thursday April 21st, they will be hosting the 20th annual Business Plan Competition at the FM Kirby Center in downtown Wilkes-Barre. We had TecBRIDGE Executive Director Don Webster on to talk about the event, its history, and so much more. This competition is the region's signature entrepreneurship and innovation event, and we were so impressed with the participants being showcased this year. Events like this help highlight the world class talent and the unlimited potential we have right here in our own backyard. TecBRIDGE's slogan “Why not us? Why not here? Why not now?” captures their mission well. They want to cultivate a mindset for more people to dream big in Northeastern Pennsylvania, while providing resources to support them along the way. If you are interested in attending or learning more, please visit their website at tecbridgepa.org.This far-ranging discussion can benefit anyone with an interest in entrepreneurship, or who wishes to see more dynamic economic growth in our region. We talked about Don's journey from growing up in the Midwest, to graduating from the University of Chicago, to working on Wall Street, and finally to Northeastern PA where he and his family put their roots down. Don has built, sold, and invested in several businesses throughout his career, and brings that experience to his role at TecBRIDGE, where they provide guidance and resources to others trying to do those same things. Our firm has enjoyed getting involved in this event, as our goal is similar- We want to serve as trusted advisors to our clients by helping them make sound decisions so they can get where they want to go. We also want to provide resources that allow them to be better allocators of capital, whether it is at the business or household level. Don's passion for the area and for helping people achieve their dreams is contagious. In this episode we talk about TecBRIDGE's goal to help connect the business, education, and technology communities to drive innovation in Northeastern Pennsylvania in a cohesive way. He also shares strategic advice he gives aspiring founders and entrepreneurs that can apply to anyone, and how he views risk and opportunity when making major decisions in his own life. There was so much packed into this conversation, but be sure to listen to the end when Don reflects on advice he'd give his 22 year old self. We hope you enjoy this episode, and we will see you on April 21stat the Business Plan Competition Awards Event!

You know that teachers are already an intricate and massively important part of helping to educate (STEAM) and inspire student explorers and curious minds! And while some great PAYLOADS have gone from the classroom to space, it soon will be the TEACHERS TURN TO EXPLORE. This opportunity is way overdue, don’t you think? Liz Kinnick and her team at the Teachers In Space program agrees. So she’s working to provide teachers with extraordinary space science experiences and industry connections. Liz was on an international flight when she read an article from British Airways inviting Liz to “collect your miles and go to space”… and thus the plans began. The Teachers in Space program is a non-for-profit, independent organization, and started as a project of the Space Frontier Foundation, inspired by NASA’s Teacher in Space Program. In 2008, the Space Frontier Foundation felt like the space sub-orbital programs that were starting should include teachers to be cheaper, safer, more environmentally friendly and does not quite exist yet- you can’t fly as a paid passenger YET. The first call-out was done by the Space Frontier Foundation and they received 1,100 teacher responses- a lot of a time when there we no flights, and the space shuttle program was about to end with the launch of Endeavor. 7 were selected and several teachers are still with the program. Some were even from NASA Educator Astronaut Trainee program. WHAT CAN I DO? Go to www.teachers-in-space.com and donate. OR tell your local school/ science museum/ church camp/ educations that there’s a place that can provide them resources for students who are interested in space! More information on Teachers In Space: www.teachers-in-space.com Teachers in Space, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization which stimulates student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by providing their teachers with extraordinary space science experiences and industry connections. Our professional development workshops for STEM teachers include personal and experimental flight opportunities, hands-on work with data sensors and remote device control, opportunities to meet and interact with scientists and developers at NASA and commercial space companies, and unique teaching materials and design contests to take back to the classroom. Teachers In Space, Inc. sparks a transfer of passion for space science and exploration from teachers to their students, preparing and encouraging those students to pursue further education and exciting, rewarding careers in the emerging space industry. www.firefly.com About Liz: Liz Kennick has directed the Teachers in Space (TIS) program since 2011, initially as a project manager for the Space Frontier Foundation (SFF). In 2014 Liz and her management team incorporated TIS as an educational nonprofit organization in the state of New York. A member of SFF’s Board from 2009-2013, Liz was previously Vice President of Client Technology at Morgan Stanley with a $2M annual budget for 1700 software users. She holds degrees in Information Systems / Operations Analysis, English, and Education and is certified as a Project Management Professional and as a Network Engineer. Liz is co-founder of NYC’s Software Process Improvement Network and has produced Yuri’s Night NY, a space-themed party for 200+ guests, annually since 2008, and TEDxMidTownNY, as space-themed speaker series, in 2010-2011. Liz created the Space Frontier Foundation’s Business Plan Bootcamp for the 5 finalists in the foundation’s 2011 Business Plan Competition, and was a judge at the 2011 SEDS Student Business Plan Competition. She created Escape Guesthouse LLC, a boutique bed and breakfast in Brooklyn, New York in 2006 and sold it in 2013 for 3 times purchase price. She has flown on ZeroG, experienced centrifuge and hypobaric chamber training, scuba dived to 70 feet, and climbed Cotopaxi, Earth’s highest extinct volcano. http://www.entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/inner-banner-copy.jpg ()Last winter, the founder and CEO of Charrette Venture Group, Matt Ostanik contacted me and inquired about my interest in being a jury member of his new Architecture Business Plan Competition. I receive emails and requests all the time asking me to buy things or participate in surveys or to join a networking group or just notification that I am a winner of the million dollar grand prize. So when Matt contacted me, I was skeptical. And when he mentioned that the grand prize for his “no-strings attached” Architecture Business Plan Competition was $10,000 alarm bells went off in my head. But as I researched Charrette Venture Group and learned what Matt was trying to do, I became interested in learning more. Matt was coming into New York for business and asked if I could meet for coffee. Last March, Matt and I and Matt's associate, Todd Reding met for coffee in Pleasantville where my office was before we moved it back to our home office here in Chappaqua. It was at that meeting when I learned of Matt's mission and his plan to help architects build better businesses. His mission is similar to mine we just want to give back and help the profession grow. After that meeting I was all in. I was invited to join Matt as a member of the competition jury. I also became sort of an informal advisor to help them connect with small firms and specifically you, the Entrepreneur Architect community. The 2014 Architecture Business Plan Competition was a huge success. I talked all about the results back in episode 36 and wrote about it in several posts. You may find links to these posts below. This year, I've been asked to join the jury once again and this week on the Entrepreneur Architect Podcast, I am speaking with Todd Reding, who since that first coffee meeting with Matt and me, has become the Chief Operating Officer of Charrette Venture Group. We talked about, not only the business plan competition, but also about Charrette Venture Group, it's purpose and how the competition is helping the profession grow. Misan Rewane is the CEO and co-founder of West Africa Vocational Education (WAVE). WAVE is a vocational training platform that seeks to empower millions of West African youth with industry-relevant employability skills that transform their mindsets, and provides access to employment opportunities to enhance their social mobility. WAVE provides self-motivated youths with the skill-sets employers look for, and teaches them how to stand out professionally by reinforcing a mindset of continuous improvement. Born and raised in Nigeria, Misan is no stranger to the difficulties of education and social mobility in West Africa. When her parents, unable to ignore the education system's breakdown, were compelled to send her to the US for college, Misan resolved to play a role in transforming the region's education and skills development systems. After earning her Economics degree from Stanford University, she worked in management consulting with The Monitor Group on a wide spectrum of projects in both the private and public sector. Post-Monitor, she supported aspiring Ivoirian entrepreneurs through TechnoServe's Business Plan Competition, and developed a scholarship administration model as a consultant with the Center for Public Policy Alternatives in Nigeria. While enrolled at the Harvard Business School in 2012, she sought out and connected with fellow socially-minded Africans to discuss ways to tackle youth unemployment in the region. Those initial discussions were the seeds that eventually grew to become West Africa Vocational Education (WAVE). The Company was launched in 2013 to focus on training and placing unemployed youth in the hospitality and retail industry.

And that would mean more comfort and time to enjoy the sweet things in life like a gourmet chocolate bar. If the ”Eight Great” finalists in the 2006-2007 Wharton Business Plan Competition -- who recently competed for more than $70 000 in prize money -- are able to achieve their entrepreneurial schemes the world would indeed become such a place. Knowledge at Wharton summarizes the presentations and announces the winners. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
