The Bryker Woods Residence is home to the owners of Hunt Architecture. In 2022, after living on their Bryker Woods lot for four years, the couple relocated their existing 1941 bungalow (to another site) and built a new home to complement the 400 SF rear studio they built two years prior.Respecting the scale of the historic neighbourhood while designing a house that was current, efficient, and innovative was a top priority. The single-story structure, clad in brick and vertical cedar siding, utilizes a mix of gable and flat roofs. The result is a home that sits comfortably in the neighbourhood while also feeling notably different. At only 2,040 SF, this modestly sized house provides a unique volume of space with ample natural light, proving that smaller spaces can have a big impact. A central spine, aligned with a large skylight above serves as the main path of travel through the house and separates the public from the private functions of the house.Hunt Architecture used their small lot to its fullest potential, providing both a comfortable home for their young family and an office for their growing business, both within steps of each other.Brittany earned her Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from The University of Texas in Austin. Prior to joining Hunt Architecture, Brittany worked on a range of cultural and institutional projects at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners in New York City. Brittany has previously taught at the University of Texas School of Architecture in Austin.Nick earned his Master of Architecture from Yale University and Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University. Stories could bring generations together. Stories brought my grandma and me together with one single phone call, one single story,  Over time, with more calls and more stories, we became even closer. We became best friends. So stories are the building blocks to real communication. Real communication is a building block to real relationships. And real relationship, if enough people are doing it around you, is the building block to real community. And all of this is significantly more powerful when the story storytelling is shared between generations." On Life Lessons "Every story contains sometimes not just one, but multiple life lessons. All of those things could be unexpected. You might not expect, if you're someone younger,  that somebody older would be so open-minded about whatever social issue is happening at the moment. And when you're someone older, likewise, you might not expect that somebody younger would be open to your way of thinking. Or that they would find you funny. If you're someone older and you tell somebody younger or something sad, you might be surprised by the confidence they see in you, which you never knew you had. What would it take to transform a 100 year old house sitting near oil fields into the most sustainable clean energy zero-emissions house? That was the challenge our guest, architect Avideh Haghighi, took up with her personal project she named ZeroHouz [http://www.zerohouz.com]. We discuss the dangers of gas appliances inside homes and why people should consider replacing - and how to replace - their “natural” gas (or some people call it fossil gas) stove, furnace, air conditioning and water heater with electric appliances. We also look into why a transition to clean energy in your home or apartment is not a one-size-fits-all question and share tips on how to get started. Does Net Zero Energy have a Net Benefit for the climate and our personal health? What happens when our homes become a place for climate action and environmental responsibility by promoting energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Talking Home Renovations with the House Maven

She calls her renovation a pretty good renovation which is in keeping with the principles of the pretty good house (https://www.prettygoodhouse.org (https://www.prettygoodhouse.org)) which is building better than required by code until it doesn't make financial sense. With some stating that the last eighteen months are simply a 'blip', a disruption of business as normal and expecting us all to quickly return to where we were in early March 2020; while others are stating that all that COVID-19 has done is speed up a change process that was already inevitable...just where does the truth lie?In this first episode of Season Two of Designed for Life, I talk with Planner, architect, urbanist and university lecturer Ming Cheng RIBA MRTP about his somewhat unorthodox journey to his current position and how he thinks we will repurpose our workplaces and town centres to suit better a more flexible way of working, shopping and living. Ming is a Registered Architect, Chartered Town Planner and Urban Designer with over 20 years of experience in design and regeneration. His experiences range from working on designing residential and cultural buildings to large scale future planning for university campuses and growing communities in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. In the podcast, Ming explains how we can and should use empirical data as evidence to design and possibly rethink urban spaces. This was a fascinating conversation on a topic that will affect us all in the coming months and years. So welcome back to Season Two. For those in education - welcome back to a new and hopefully less demanding term, kick off your shoes, settle into a cosy seat and enjoy Designed for Life in conversation with Ming Cheng.Brought to you with the help of our sponsors and partners The Edge Foundation and PTC Onshape.

Michael Young is an architect and an educator practicing in New York City where he is a founding partner of the architecture and urban design practice Young & Ayata. Michael is an Assistant Professor at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union. He is the recipient of the 2019-20 Rome Prize from the American Academy of Rome. Formerly, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Princeton University and Visiting Lecturer at SCI-Arc.In the Fall of 2016 he was the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professor at Yale University. Michael received his Masters of Architecture from Princeton University and his Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Michael is a Registered Architect in the State of New York. Young & Ayata formed a partnership in New York in 2008 to explore the conceptual and aesthetic possibilities of architecture and urbanism. The practice is dedicated to both built commissions and experimental research. The practice views the reality of contemporary building as a provocation for architectural form, material and technology. In following these trajectories it is necessary to understand architecture in its historical processes. Both principals teach and view the educational experience as crucial to the continual development of architectural ideas. In this episode, Michael and I talk about how important it is for design schools to primarily teach design, because all the projects talk about the real world, even if sometimes we believe that schools don't teach us enough. We talk about his experience as a student, and how he believes that waiting 2-4 years before going to graduate school is the most beneficial decision. He talks about how his teaching experience has given him the ability to continue learning, year after year, from his students, and how he applies that knowledge into his firm Young & Ayata. We talk a little bit about exactly when he realized that he wanted to create his own studio and why it was so important for him to have a work partner, whom he could trust in order to build something together. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/cavin-and-claire.jpg ()How to Succeed as a Married Couple in Architecture “Being a married couple in architecture may be the most difficult,  the most satisfying and the most successful approach at being small firm architects. It’s not always easy and it’s not always pretty, but I wouldn’t trade my life as an architect with my wife and partner Annmarie for anything. How we’ve established our roles and responsibilities for both our firm and our family is how we’ve become successful.” This week at EntreArchitect Podcast, Mark R. LePage speaks with Claire and Cavin Costello from http://www.theranchmine.com (The Ranch Mine) to share their story about How to Succeed as a Married Couple in Architecture. Cavin’s Origin Story Cavin is originally from Connecticut and attended Northeastern University for his undergraduate and graduate degree while working over two years in firms in Connecticut and Boston. After graduating, he felt a change was necessary and he packed up and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. A friend introduced him to Claire the first day he arrived, and the rest is history. Listen to episode 138 to hear Cavin’s full origin story and https://entrearchitect.com/podcast/design-sell-modern-architecture-small-firm-architect-cavin-costello-podcast/ (How To Design and Sell Modern Architecture). Claire’s Origin Story Claire was born and raised in Phoenix, and grew up studying furniture catalogues. Her grandfather built his own home and farm in Indiana; the pride he had and the stories he told about the building process painted a dialogue about creating a home. Similarly, her uncle in Tucson built a rammed earth house and, during a visit, she learned a lot about that process. Both people played a big part in fostering an interest in Claire about creating a home. Her degrees are in English and communication, but her personal relationships followed the design world. A mutual friend introduced her to Cavin, who was obviously very rooted in architecture, and the conversations they had about the built environment and what someone could do with design drew her in. They took a leap to purchase and renovate a foreclosure, and having survived that challenge early on makes other challenges that come their way surmountable. Would you recommend a foreclosure renovation to other married couples? The sequence of building their own designs was such a hands-on experience that Claire found a lot of value in the experience, though it did put them through the wringer. Cavin remembers the process being taxing from both a financial and emotional standpoint, and mixing both of those strains is not for the faint of heart. Jumping into the most difficult thing accelerated their growth and made everything down the road possible. For the Costellos, it was easier to take the risk at the beginning. By diving straight in, do you feel you were able to get some systems in place? It was eye-opening to see the architectural components of moving walls and doing additions, and then you have the interiors of cabinets, tiles, and other finished items. Some things don’t have to be decided at the design part, which they learned along the way. Now, there’s two sets of documents the clients receive including the architectural construction documents and the interior specifications book, which is easily changed if needed. It’s more manageable for clients to have all of the information in front of them with a timeline of the decisions and priorities. How is The Ranch Mine business structured? The Ranch Mine includes Cavin as the Registered Architect and Claire as the Chief Executive. Cavin is the lead on design, but the Costellos collaborate a lot by visiting projects for initial visits, working to wrap both of their heads around existing conditions, and joining together for different design elements. They work with...
