Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 13 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Senior Sydney Cook Rogoff begins our episode with an in depth discussion of the Creative and Cultural Industries with Kellen Sweny, a Tech Initiatives Program Manager for the Walt Disney Company, specifically Walt Disney World. They discuss in detail the study of Creative and Cultural Industries before diving into the different aspects of the Walt Disney Company and focusing specifically on the responsibility the company has to continue to produce outstanding content and how Sweny contributes to this goal. They touch on how Sweny came to work for the company and what drew her to it in the first place, before they conclude with Sweny's “words of wisdom” for anyone trying to get a job in the corporate world of Disney, and how she herself worked to get her job. They touch on the Disney College Program (a program setup by the Walt Disney Company for aspiring Disney employees) and how this program helped her attain her current role at Disney. Our second segment in today's episode features an interview with Travis Garcia, the Co-Director of Features Programming at the Newport Beach Film Festival, who speaks with Marisa Lamas. Listen in as Marisa and Travis delve into the film festival industry and find out what it takes to take on the role of a director of features programming. They discuss Travis' previous work experience and what prepared him for his current job, from interning with the Austin Film Festival to student teaching at Cal State Fullerton in the Film, Cinema, and Media Studies sector. They also explore some of the position's highlights and challenges which prompts a discussion what kind of skills are needed to truly succeed in a position like Travis' and how to develop those skills. As they wrap up the interview, Travis has a chance to discuss some of the influential figures who were responsible for steering him in the right direction, and the advice that they bestowed on him that will always hold a prevalent place in his mind.
Vivian Kerr's Scrap is one of the best films Ian has seen in years. In today's very special episode, he sits down with the writer/director/producer/star to talk about her journey from taking bit roles in Hollywood productions to striking out on her own with a dazzling feature debut. The film centers on Bet (Kerr), a single mom living in Los Angeles, whose recent homelessness compels her to temporarily place daughter Birdy (Julianna Layne) with her older brother, Ben (Anthony Rapp), and his wife, Stacy (Lana Parilla). As Beth struggles against unemployment and her lifelong addiction to delusion, we discover that people in her orbit are also dealing with their own issues--resulting in conflicts that are alternately comic and poignant. In this interview, Kerr talks about the challenges and triumphs of putting herself behind the creative wheel (rather than bringing other creators' visions come to life); the logistics of putting together an independent movie during COVID; and catching the directing "bug". Ian also asks about Vivian's next project, the wildly different supernatural period drama, Seance, which recently premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival!Note: The show begins with a PSA/apology on Ian's part. There was an issue with his microphone during the conversation, which he didn't discover until afterward. Thanks to digital manipulation, his audio now sounds...passable!Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXLetterboxdBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Scrap trailer.Read Ian's 5/5 review of Scrap at Kicking the Seat.Learn more about Scrap on the film's official website.Follow Scrap on Instagram.Check out the trailer for Vivian's follow-up feature, Seance! And follow Seance on Instagram, too!Keep up with all things Vivian at her production company, Rue Dangeau!

Combat chaplains wear uniforms, but carry no weapons. And their service can involve the ultimate sacrifice. For nearly 250 years, in every battle throughout our nation's history, they've been there...quietly supporting soldiers while bullets flew by. Perhaps more than any other profession, diversity is their unique and inspirational strength because, while they may be Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, or Buddhist, when they're on the front lines of combat, they support and stand-up for soldiers of all faiths...and no faith. When the remains of prisoner-of-war and Army combat chaplain Emil Kapaun (perhaps the Vatican's next saint) are identified after 70 years, much of our nation is captivated by their journey home. As a younger former chaplain unexpectedly embarks on his own journey to greet them, he becomes inspired by the untold stories of the 419 U.S. military chaplain heroes who've given their lives for this unique calling. As the paths of these combat chaplains from different eras finally collide, we're reminded how the profound weight of history and the immense power of love can converge to produce a life-changing healing.Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain's Journey marks the first-ever co-production between Hollywood and the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps. Plus Can AI Really Train AI? ▶️Meta's "Self-Taught Evaluator" trains and evaluates AIs autonomously, using the "chain of thought" method to boost accuracy, potentially outperforming human feedback. Microsoft Announces New Generative AI Agents for Businesses Microsoft has unveiled a series of semi-autonomous AI agents designed to improve business processes, from qualifying sales leads to managing customer interactions. Available through Microsoft 365 Copilot and Dynamics, these agents can work independently within set boundaries but require oversight to avoid unpredictable responses. Companies are exploring AI agents as a way to boost productivity, although they carry risks, including potential errors without human intervention. As generative AI evolves, Microsoft aims to integrate both agents and copilots, believing organizations need a balance between task automation and human assistance. Nicolas Cage Warns Actors About AI Manipulating Performances At the Newport Beach Film Festival, Nicolas Cage raised concerns about the use of AI and "employment-based digital replicas" (EBDR) in filmmaking, warning that AI could change actors' performances without their consent. Cage urged actors to think carefully before signing contracts allowing studios to use this technology, citing his altered performance in The Flash as an example. He called AI "inhumane" and emphasized protecting what he termed MVMFMBMI: “my voice, my face, my body, my imagination—my performance.” This warning comes amid ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes over AI use in video game production. AI Bubble: Bigger and Riskier Than the Dot-Com Era? Generative AI is experiencing explosive growth, but experts Jeffrey Funk and Gary Smith argue that it may end worse than the dot-com bubble. Unlike the internet boom of the late 1990s, AI adoption is fueled by free services that often lack meaningful economic impact. The costs of developing and sustaining AI—such as high-priced chips, electricity, and talent—currently outweigh productivity gains. With OpenAI anticipating billions in losses despite high valuations, the authors warn that AI may be an overhyped, unsustainable bubble, leading to a significant market crash. Meta Unveils AI Model That Trains Other AIs Without Human Feedback Meta introduced the "Self-Taught Evaluator," an AI model designed to train and evaluate other AIs autonomously. Traditionally, AI development relies on human feedback through Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLAIF), a process that can be slow and expensive. Meta's new model leverages the "chain of thought" technique, breaking complex problems into smaller steps for better accuracy. According to researcher Jason Weston, as AI advances, it may outperform humans in reviewing and improving its own work.

The book helped inspire a film that had its world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival in October 2023 and closed the Palm Beach Film Festival that same month. The author appears in the film. It's an epic tale that spans more than 30 years. As the Cold War took hold at that dawn of the 1950s the U.S. government began a program to perfect the atom bomb. The Nevada Test Site would be the prime location for testing atomic weapons on U.S. soil. A key to the program was to reduce impact to the public by having the radioactive nuclear fallout drift "downwind" into sparsely-inhabited areas of Utah.....
We can't believe we've done 200 episodes of the podcast, but here we are. We got to celebrate this milestone in front of an amazing crowd at the FNI Fast Fest screening in The Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin last week. We sat down with Cathy Brady and Mark O'Connor and had a wonderful chat about the life of a filmmaker in Ireland today. Cathy Brady is a two-time IFTA-winning director, having won Best Short in 2011 for her first film Small Change and again in 2013 for Morning, which was also selected for the BFI London Film Festival 2012 and won the Short Film Nominee prize for the European Film Awards at Cork Film Festival. In 2011, Brady directed the BIFA nominated short Rough Skin (written by Laura Lomas and starring Vicky McClure) as part of Channel 4's Coming Up scheme. Her short film, Wasted, competed at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2013. In the same year, Brady was named one of Screen Daily's ‘Stars of Tomorrow'. In 2014, Brady directed on the BAFTA-nominated drama-thriller series Glue. Most recently, Brady directed Stefanie Preissner's TV comedy series Can't Cope/Won't Cope for Dead Pan Pictures and RTE, which is currently showing on BBC Three. Her debut feature as writer-director, Wildfire, is currently in development, and will be produced by Carlo Cresto-Dina (The Wonders, Cannes Grand Jury Prize 2014) along with Cowboy Films. Mark O' Connor is a graduate of Film Operations and Production from Ballyfermot College and directing from The New York Film Academy. He also holds a masters in screenwriting from IADT. Mark made over 60 short films, before writing and directing his debut feature film ‘Between the Canals'. Between the Canals was highly acclaimed with Film Ireland calling it “The best Irish film in a long long time”. It was the acting debut for Barry Keoghan and many of the cast went on to star in leading roles in the hit RTE television series ‘Love Hate'. Mark's second feature film ‘King of the travellers' was selected for festivals around the world and received a UK and Irish cinema and DVD release and was released in 150 territories worldwide on VOD. ‘Stalker', Mark's third feature film won the Underground Film Festival and Runner up Prize at the Galway Film festival. It won 6 awards at the Manchester Film Festival including Best Film, Best Actor, Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Director, and Film of the Festival. It also won Best Film at The Newport Beach Film Festival in Los Angeles. Worldwide rights to the film were bought by Netflix. Mark then wrote and directed a six-part crime drama for Virgin Media UK/Ireland called ‘Darklands'. Co-Executive Producer, David Knight talks about 'Remembering Gene Wilder', Winning Best Overall Documentary at Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF), tying with 'The Disappearance of Shere Hite'. David Knight along with his wife Julie Nimoy are the executive producers behind 'Remembering Gene Wilder', a wonderful documentary written by Glenn Kirschbaum detailing the life of the comedic genius who we lost to Alzheimer's. A true labor of love from Executive Producers David Knight and Julie Nimoy, who first collaborated with Ron Frank on, ‘Remembering Leonard: His Life, Legacy and Battle with COPD‘, in 2017, which also screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival. That documentary lead to Nimoy reaching out to Karen Wilder, Gene's widow about doing a similar documentary in his honor. Once word got out, Frank had only one person in mind to write this love letter to one Gene Wilder and that was Kirschbaum. Through the ‘Remembering Leonard: His Life, Legacy and Battle with COPD‘ documentary, Knight and Nimoy reached out to Karen Wilder, Gene's widow and with her blessing began working on 'Remembering Gene Wilder'. Knight details the love he, Nimoy and Kirschbaum have for Wilder, what it was like working with Mel Brooks on the documentary and being able to share stories of an actor that needs to be preserved for future generations. Knight also answers the question, "Which is the better film? 'Blazing Saddles' or 'Young Frankenstein'?" The answer will not surprise anyone. ‘Remembering Gene Wilder‘ is currently on the film festival circuit and will land a theatrical run in the near future. In the meantime, follow ‘Remembering Gene Wilder‘ on Twitter @RememberGene and on Facebook at Remembering Gene Wilder Documentary. The official website genewilderdoc.com, will have more information in the near future. #RememberingGeneWilder #GeneWilder #Documentary #NewportBeachFilmFestival #NBFF #NBFF2023 #NBFF23 #FanboyNation

Matthew Einstein of Tradition Pictures and Glen Trotiner produced the film and guided every part of the process from the script to the finished movie. The performances given by the cast were outstanding. The film stars newcomer Jance Enslin, who won Best Male Lead for his role as Andy Cady and includes veterans such as Carly Pope (Elysium), Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), and Bryan Greenberg (How to Make it In America).Casting for The Mental State was led by casting directors Patricia McCorkle and her then-associate Katja Zarolinkski. “After about six seconds into his audition, it was obvious that he was the right choice for Andy,” said Camali of Enslin. Camali also remarked that “each actor was ready to come on this project to act their butts off, which they did. I'm very thankful for this cast.” Matthew Einstein discussed Camali's work on the project, “James was so connected to the material and was dogged in his determination to make a meaningful statement with this film. James is a thorough filmmaker and worked so well with the actors. He would be awake until the wee hours of the morning after long shoot days to make sure everything was just right before the next day. It was a pleasure to work alongside him throughout the process and to support his efforts.”Camali stated what sets this movie apart from others is that it “brings a lot of empathy to everyone involved in a school shooting. It's not meant to generalize every scenario like this or our main character's experience with his mental illness. We worked extraordinarily hard to express the perspectives of the shooter, the family, other students, faculty, and the surrounding community with utmost respect and compassion.” The film's success at The Catalina Film Festival offers a glimpse at the impact the film will surely make as it screens at more film festivals around the country and the world. The film also won Best Feature at the New Jersey International Film Festival. The film will screen at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Portland Film Festival, Louisville's International Film Festival, and Syracuse International Film Festival. The film is seeking sales representation and distribution. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

'Anxious Nation' Brings to Light a Hidden Epidemic Effecting the American Youth at Newport Beach Film Festival. Having its world premiere yesterday, Saturday, October 15, 2023 at the Newport Beach Film Festival and receiving a second screening on Thursday, October 20th at 7:30 p.m., 'Anxious Nation' shines a light on the hidden pandemic of youth anxiety that has been troubling American kids for decades. Originally started as a Facebook post by Producer, Writer and Co-Directly, Laura Morton regarding her daughter's issues with anxiety, 'Anxious Nation' took on a life of its own as parents who felt alone now had a conversation in what could be done to help their children. Statistics are showing that Suicide rates among 15-24 year-olds have tripled since the 1950s and is the 2nd most common cause of death among college students, as 70% of teens between the ages of 13 to 17 view anxiety and depression as a major problem, while 50% of 18-22 year-olds feel lonelier and more isolated than seniors 72 and older. As Morton was able to begin formulating the documentary and conducting interviews for 'Anxious Nation' she had only one director in mind who could take this feature to the next level and that was Academy Award Winner, Vanessa Roth. Roth was initially hesitant about taking on the project as she was dealing with anxiety within her own household at the time and felt it was too personal a subject to be objective in its delivery. However, as time progressed and Morton forged forward, Roth came along to direct the project making 'Anxious Nation' a subject needing to be discussed, especially when during the height of Covid, society could no longer ignore this epidemic. Once word about 'Anxious Nation' came to fruition, Super Model, Actress, Humanitarian and mother, Kathy Ireland came on board to present the documentary to the world. Along with leading experts and personal accounts, we learn that there is no one particular factor that leads to anxiety in our youth. Causes can be from familiar pressures, social media addiction, bullying and information overload that can stress anyone out if not handled with carefully. Listen to our red carpet interviews with Laura Morton, Vanessa Roth and Kathy Ireland above regarding 'Anxious Nation'. 'Anxious Nation' has a second showing at Newport Beach Film Festival on Thursday, October 20, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. at The Lot in Theater 3. #AnxiousNation #Anxiety #Depression #Documentary #Interview #Review #NewportBeachFilmFest #NBFF2022 #NBFF22 #NBFF #FanboyNation
Michael Squier returns to Slow Baja to give us an update on the premiere of The Baja Bug Movie. The film has three screenings at the 2022 Newport Beach Film Festival. October 15th and 18th are sold out, but tickets (as of this posting) are still available for the closing night on October 20th. “When the Volkswagen Beetle was first brought into the United States in 1949, only two vehicles were sold. In the early 1950s, the “Bug” established itself as America's budget car and was so adaptable, it could be turned into a dune buggy, which is exactly what Bruce Meyers did, creating the “Meyers Manx”. By 1967 Bruce Meyers, Vic Wilson, and Ed Pearlman had created the Mexican 1000, a race from the top of Baja to the bottom. Every type of vehicle imaginable, from big 4x4 trucks, stock Volkswagen bugs, motorcycles to home built creations was entered into the race; Bruce and his crew were laughed at when they showed up to the starting line with their little buggies. But to everyone's surprise, when the first vehicle crossed the finish line 27 hours later, it was the Meyers Manx, paving the way for Volkswagens to take over off-road racing. Celebrities like Steve McQueen and James Garner helped catapult the sport and inspire weekend warriors seeking adventure. This is the story of the humble little car that conquered the desert.” -The Baja Bug Movie Watch The Baja Bug Movie trailer here Check out The Baja Bug Movie website here Follow The Baja Bug Movie on Instagram here Follow The Baja Bug Movie on Facebook here Buy tickets to the Newport Beach Film Festival here
