How do we respond to those who feel unworthy? How do we work at reframing the messages that have us believe we are not enough? How do we, like Jesus, call each other forward into hope, healing and worthiness? We were pleased to have our own Heather Peters (MCC SK Peacebuilding Coordinator) provide our 5-Minute Focus on this Brunch Sunday. In closing Heather invited us to listen to and watch When God Imagined Me by Alana Levandoski and to pray for people who are experiencing feelings of unworthiness – whether through systems, cultural narratives or relationships.
In Her Image: Finding Heavenly Mother in Scripture, Scholarship, the Arts, & Everyday Life
Various ancient myths portraying the King's anointing, death, and rebirth come together in one miraculous Easter weekend, with the feminine archetype finally taking her rightful place in the story. In this episode, author and theologian Margaret Starbird joins Meg to share her spiritual and scholarly knowledge of the Divine Feminine as manifest in the Sacred Union of Christ with Mary Magdalene. Margaret shares about how she was inspired to seek the missing piece in the four gospels, and what she discovered in that pursuit. She emphasizes the importance of having the feminine represented in divinity, the yin to the yang, one of the two fishes in the Pisces symbol... the Christ and his Bride. Composer and singer-songwriter Alana Levandoski grew up on the Canadian prairies with an awareness of her own reliance on the gifts of the land, giving her an "ecological perspective" on her artistic vocation. "There's a huge difference between seeing something as free and seeing something as a gift," she says. For Levandoski, embracing the interdependence of a gift economy has allowed her to witness the richness of reciprocity—not just between her and her listeners but among them, too.
Join Rev. Emily E. Ewing (they) and Rev. Kay Rohloff (she) and special guest Sister Colleen O'Toole (she) of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas to explore new and nerdy connections to the scripture for All Saints Day, which falls on November 1st this and every year (though it may be commemorated on the closest Sunday), including our deep dive into saints! The scripture we refer to for this episode can be found here. Colleen mentioned these spirituals by Servant of God, Thea Bowman. We talked about Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was our deep dive topic for our episode on the 5th Sunday in Lent this season. We mentioned Saint Gerard Majella, the closest we could find to a patron saint of handkerchiefs! This is The Christ Hymn by Alana Levandoski that Colleen mentioned. If you want to learn more about saints, Blessed Among Us by Robert Ellsberg is great! Also, we found out after recording that the painting we said was a Goya painting of Miguel Pro actually wasn't. A music podcast featuring a collaborative project between Alana Levandoski and Ignatius Mabasa, originally released on a three song CD we put out in 2011. Alana's song, "Where were you?" picks up on the text of Job 38-41, in which Job hears the voice of God coming to him from "out of the whirlwind," to which Ignatius has added poetry which speaks of the longing for fulfillment. If you're interested in hearing the other two songs from the project, they're available to you in podcast form by clicking here. “The thing about Alana [Levandoski] is that she’s gifted. She's not just gifted as a musician, which she is, but she’s gifted as a lyricist...she teased these words, kind of like mantras, highly evocative mantras. She strung them together in a developmental expansion. So it was really a stroke of creative insight. It was really lovely how she brought it together." - James Finley (via interview with Ordinary Mystic) After Alana Levandoski attended and graduated from the Living School for Action and Contemplation, Alana experienced a rebirth as an artist, finally opening to a way of integrating her spirituality, her craftsmanship and her lifestyle. Abiding by a monastic rule inspired by her time living with the Benedictines, Alana and her husband Ian have committed to a life of minimalism and sacred simplicity. Alana released a new album in September 2016. The album is a series of chants and compositions with spoken word in collaboration with contemplative teacher and clinical psychologist James Finley (author of Merton’s Palace of Nowhere). It is called Sanctuary ~ Exploring the Healing Path with Alana Levandoski and James Finley. (adapted from alanalevandoski.com)
Alana Levandoski is a singer, songwriter, and author who discovered that life as a professional recording artist left her unhappy and unfulfilled. Feeling “betrayed by music,” Alana left that world behind and embarked on a musical pilgrimage to heal and to rediscover herself, writing a book and an album called I Am a Sparrow about […] The post ACL 011: Alana Levandoski appeared first on A Congruent Life.
Neil Young is surely one of the patron saints of just about all of the music that we love most, so it’s only right to celebrate his birthday and his return to town this week. Tonight, a dive into Neil’s catalogue with some great covers of his classics, as well as a bit of ol’ Shakey himself. And how could we not get excited about a show where the opening acts are Los Lobos and The Sadies? This is a roots rockin’ good time.

Another unbelievably busy week for concerts in Winnipeg, kicked off by one of the biggest hits at this year's Winnipeg Folk Festival, Amelia Curran, who stopped by the studio to sing us a couple of songs from her great new album Hunter Hunter. The week continues with The Other Brothers, Alana Levandoski, Elliott BROOD, and the return of the great Jesse DeNatale, among others. Even with a busy week like that, we managed to fit in some great new music.
